Although direct comparisons are tricky, given the different compounds, there are signs that Red Bull and McLaren will again be locked in a close battle for supremacy this weekend.

Red Bull have only been able to bring one full raft of upgrades to the Hungaroring this weekend, with, unsurprisingly, Verstappen getting the full benefit of them. But despite missing out on having the optimum Red Bull package, in theory, Sergio Perez was far happier at the end of Friday than he so often has been in recent months, saying that this was “the most comfortable I have felt with the car at this stage of the weekend in a while.”

Norris was quickest over a single lap, but even his long run on the hard tyres looked promising, matching or being even faster than Verstappen’s runs on the mediums, which were slightly slower but more consistent. Unfortunately for Ferrari fans, Charles Leclerc missed out on any opportunity to get a long run in after crashing out of the session early. However, even Sainz’s high-fuel runs would have done little to help his team feel like they are any closer to fighting for more wins this weekend.

Instead, it looks as though the fight for pole position could be between the world champions and McLaren – with Perez potentially a genuine factor at the front once again. But Norris and Piastri will have a difficult prospect to keep the Red Bulls off the top spot, as suggested by how Verstappen and Perez were quickest through sectors two and three, respectively, on their fastest laps of Friday while Norris ahead only through the opening sector.

After a hot afternoon of practice in Hungary, the teams are already analysing telemetry data and long runs to prepare race strategies and analyse qualifying paces. Red Bull and McLaren look to be the strongest for the Hungarian GP, although Mercedes and Ferrari could join the battle at any time.

It’s already a classic of this season, but Friday’s data gives us another duel between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris. The Red Bull team has brought an update package that has paid off and both Verstappen and Sergio Perez have been very comfortable. The Mexican, in fact, had his best Friday since the Chinese GP.

The FP1 and FP2 sessions at the Hungaroring have left us with some interesting data to analyse and several names to watch out for in qualifying and the race on Sunday. Although we don’t know a lot of data such as the fuel load of each car, the engine map selected, etc. the data from Friday at the Hungarian GP gives us a bigger picture of how the weekend might unfold.

Charles Leclerc admitted he thought the damage to his Ferrari would be “much bigger” than it was, after crashing out of FP2 in Hungary on Friday. Leclerc hit the inside wall on the exit of the high-speed Turn 4 at the Hungaroring after catching the kerb and being sent into a spin, the weight of the impact setting off the sensor that required the Medical Car to be deployed – though he reported immediately that he was okay.

“Well, when I lost it I thought the damage would be much bigger,” Leclerc said after the session. “The damage is not that big, but obviously it’s enough for us to not continue the session and that’s never what you want. What happened is that I ran a bit wide on the kerb, I got a snap in the middle of Turn 4, got a bit wide on the kerb and then lost the car on the kerb.”

“The car was pretty good. The feeling is getting a little bit better, we had more of a consistent day compared to the last three or four weekends. So that’s positive. Unfortunately, with the mistake, the mileage was cut short, but hopefully we’ll recover that in FP3 tomorrow.”

Lando Norris continued his strong recent run of form in Free Practice 2 for the Hungarian Grand Prix, topping the session by over two-tenths from championship leader Max Verstappen. Norris topped the times with a lap of 1m 17.788s around a toasty-hot Hungaroring track, leaving him 0.243s to the good over Verstappen in the upgraded Red Bull RB20.

Charles Leclerc fans will have been sad to see their driver not featuring at the front of the field, after the Ferrari driver crashed around 15 minutes into FP2, swiping his SF-24 down the wall at Turn 5 and bringing out the red flags, with Leclerc playing no further part in the session. The full details of Red Bull's huge Hungarian Grand Prix upgrade have been revealed, with it being one of the largest packages in the field. The most-striking and visual detail is to the engine cover and cooling with the 'shoulder' air inlets ditched and the long cooling channels ditched for a more conventional design.

Red Bull states this is to achieve "better cooling efficiency for a high ambient temperature and relatively slow circuit." In other words, it could be deemed as a 'high downforce package', with the halo, rear corner and front wing and front suspension also taking in new parts to improve the airflow and add more performance-enhancing load.

In contrast, rivals Mercedes only has a small upgrade to the rear of the car to improve rear downforce, whilst Ferrari has brought a small reworked upgrade to the floor underbody to try and eliminate the bouncing it has been suffering since its Spanish GP upgrade. McLaren has not brought any upgrades to Budapest.

Sir Lewis Hamilton and George Russell bemoaned the very hot weather after a difficult start to their Hungarian Grand Prix weekend. ‘It’s definitely very hot. Beautiful in Budapest as always!’ Hamilton told Sky Sports afterward with temperatures reaching upwards of 34°C at the circuit. Today’s not been a good day, really. The weather has been good and it’s been nice to be here but we’ve not really been on form today. Felt just as bad as it does normally when it’s hot.’

‘The car hasn’t felt good set-up-wise but we think we have an idea why and we’ll just work overnight. It’s not the best prep so far. There’s a particular thing that we’ve changed this weekend which we probably need to go back on.’ Lewis Hamilton.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was third, 0.281s adrift from Norris and just ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell. Carlos Sainz was Ferrari’s fastest representative in fifth position while a strong display by RB’s Daniel Ricciardo saw the Aussie complete the top six.

Verstappen’s performance in third hinted at another qualifying showdown with Norris, while Russell and Sainz completed the top five. An encouraging effort by Ricciardo saw the Aussie classified P6, just ahead of a panaché of mid-field runners formed bvy Williams’ Alex Albon, Haas’ Nico Hulkenberg and Yuki Tsunoda.

Hamilton rounded up the top-ten while Leclerc headed the second half of the field which included both Aston Martins that struggled for speed, a pair of Saubers and both Alpines with Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon lining up a worrying P18 and P20.

Lando Norris led a McLaren 1-2 in the third practice session at the Hungarian Grand Prix, as the MCL60 thrived in cooler conditions. Reigning champion Max Verstappen looked potent as Red Bull conducted its early running on the hard tyre - while the rest of the field favoured mediums - but his run did not match the McLarens late on.

Norris's best lap, a 1m16.098s, was achieved despite a small slide in the final corner, with team-mate Oscar Piastri clawing back a tenth in the final sector to end up 0.044s behind overall. Verstappen, for his part, was a quarter of a second down. The rest of the competitors do not appear to be in the mix for pole.

Mercedes briefly led with George Russell, but its late-session attempts on fresh softs came up well short of what McLaren had managed to do. Russell in fourth ended up two tenths up on Hamilton, but this was enough for a difference of four positions. Hamilton also had a major spin after getting his wheels on the dirty part of the surface off-line at Turn 9, but avoided making contact with anything.

The third and final practice session at the Hungaroring resulted in a dominant display from one of F1’s leading teams… Lando Norris led a McLaren 1-2 in third practice for the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix, with Max Verstappen proving the closest challenger for the Woking-based team.

With cooler air and track temperatures without direct sunshine beating down on the Hungaroring, the first half-hour of track time in the third and final practice session ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix ticked away without incident as the drivers pounded around the tight and twisty circuit. It was advantage Mercedes at the mid-point of the session as the two Mercedes drivers topped the times, before the qualifying simulations began with around 20 minutes to go.

Lando Norris took over at the front ahead of George Russell as the McLaren popped in an eye-opening 1:16.098 to go almost half a second clear of everyone, with Oscar Piastri making it a McLaren 1-2 as the Australian went just 0.044 seconds slower than his teammate.

McLaren's impressive performance so far this weekend at the Hungaroring suggests they are the team to beat heading into qualifying. It remains to be seen whether Red Bull have more pace in hand but Verstappen ruined his final lap when he locked up and ran wide at Turn 1.

George Russell was fourth for Mercedes, ahead of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and Daniel Ricciardo, who placed a strong sixth for RB, just over half a second adrift. Alex Albon put his Williams seventh ahead of Haas’ Nico Hulkenberg, the second RB of Yuki Tsunoda, and Lewis Hamilton, who surprisingly struggled for pace at one of his favourite tracks and could only end up 10th.

Hamilton, who has claimed a record nine pole positions and eight victories in Hungary, was well off teammate Russell and also had a spin in the middle sector during his final soft tyre run.

Max Verstappen has finished third in the last free practice before the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix. With a fastest time of 1:16.379, the reigning world champion finished the session with an almost three-tenths gap to Lando Norris, who came first. Max drove a different program to the other drivers at the start of training, driving a long stint on the hard tyres.

With just 15 minutes on the clock, the times are coming faster and sharper. Norris sets a 1:16.0, claiming the fastest time once again. Teammate Oscar Piastri improves and takes second place, 44-thousandths behind number one. Max, with just twelve minutes time left on the clock, switches to softs. In his first lap he goes third, three-tenths behind P1.

With just five minutes on the clock, a yellow flag is waved; Lewis Hamilton spun in his Mercedes, but is soon underway once more. In the last minute, Max makes one more attempt at a fast lap, but gets blocked into turn 3, meaning he closes the session in third, behind Norris and Piastri.

McLaren stamped their authority on Q3 and with just over two minutes left on the clock, Norris was leading his colleague in a one-two for the Woking-based team. However, a major shunt for Yuki Tsunoda brought out the red flag, stopped the ticker and offered Verstappen a chance to launch another challenge for pole position. However, the Dutchman did not try a final run.

However, as the first sector times rolled in, the timing screen was peppered with yellow rectangles with only Daniel Ricciardo able to improve his time. Both McLaren drivers peeled into the pit lane to confirm a front-row lockout for the Hungarian GP.

Lando Norris pipped team-mate Oscar Piastri to pole position as McLaren delivered on expectations to seize a front row lockout at Formula 1’s Hungarian Grand Prix. Norris came out on top during a session which included two red flag stoppages and intermittent rain throughout as McLaren overcame Red Bull and Max Verstappen.

There had been persistent rain in the build-up to the session and the FIA declared the track wet, but the high track temperature meant that slicks were still the choice. Despite McLaren being the pacesetting team across practice as Norris headed his team-mate, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and then Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton edged them.

On a weekend in which McLaren continue to show incredible pace with the MCL38 sticking to the track, Norris will line up P1 ahead of Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen.

Meanwhile, Sergio Perez and George Russell were the big casualties to fall early in qualifying as the Red Bull driver’s woeful form continued with a Turn 8 crash while Russell didn’t have enough fuel in his W15 for a second flying lap as the track conditions improved.

With rain in the air around the Hungaroring, there was a mad dash to set strong lap times at the start of Q1, but Russell found himself immediately on the back foot, ending the first run in P14, just above the cut-off points. On the following run, Russell experienced a major loss of grip on the approach to Turn Eight, forcing him off the track and ending his lap. This left him in a precarious position when Sergio Perez brought out the red flag with seven minutes on the clock.

On his final run, Russell needed to improve to keep himself in the hunt, but the 26-year-old was unable to complete his run as Mercedes had miscalculated the fuel needed for a flying lap and cooldown lap. “Why are we not putting enough fuel in the car to complete the session, guys?” Russell probed on the radio. However, after his elimination, he confessed: "Sorry about this session guys. It’s on me.”

Martin Brundle found George Russell’s Hungarian GP Q1 exit ‘bizarre’: But Russell was not in the fight for pole for the Hungarian GP as the Mercedes driver bowed out of qualifying in Q1. The 26-year-old failed to improve his provisional lap time by enough with his final attempt after a brief rain shower dampened the Hungaroring during the stage.

Russell sat 14th in the timesheet during the red flag interruption caused by Red Bull’s Sergio Perez crashing. He was also 1.341 seconds slower than the lap time his Mercedes teammate Hamilton set for P1. But Russell could only improve to 10th after finding 0.460s on his time. Yet further drivers improving their lap times saw Russell plummet down the order and finish Q1 in P17.

Brundle could not hide his surprise at seeing the Briton bow out so soon as other drivers overcame the conditions. Russell was also one of the first drivers to do a second run. “Wow, [I] didn’t see that one coming,” Brundle said on Sky Sports F1 (20/7, 15:30). “What happened to George’s lap? He didn’t find time, others found bucketloads of grip out there. There were 1 minute 17s out on the race track. How bizarre.”

Reacting to the accident, Martin Brundle said on Sky Sports: "Was he taking crazy speed into the corner? Was he off line? Did he make a mistake? No. He turned in on the right line and there just wasn't any grip when he got there. "He'd come off the kerb in Turn Seven so maybe he got a little bit more damp on his right-rear tyre, he was quite high up, and it's turned in and he's just the way it's running at the moment.”

Oscar Piastri, Australia’s McLaren driver, has promised to let personal ambition take second place to team priorities after a remarkable front-row lockout for Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix. Piastri lines up alongside English-born teammate Lando Norris, who is on pole, after the British team dominated Saturday’s qualifying session.

“Of course when I miss out by two 100ths you think of all the little things you can do a bit better, but it’s an amazing result for the team,” Piastri said, before adding that the main goal was to keep both the papaya-coloured cars at the front come the race’s finish.

“Of course I want to get into the lead, but we have both cars on the front row and we are trying to win this championship as a team, and we will be smart,” the Australian said.

MV: Yeah, I mean, I tried. The whole weekend I think we have been a little bit behind, and I think that was also the case in qualifying. Another impressive performance sees Lando Norris take his 2nd pole position of the season and will start the race on pole position, followed by teammate Oscar Piastri.

But outside of the McLaren garage, other teams didn't have such a good qualifying session: between Verstappen's frustration, Perez's costly mistake, Russell's disappointment and Tsunoda's red flag incident, there's certainly enough to discuss.

Ben Hunt and Alex Kalinauckas sat down in the Hungaroring's paddock to discuss all these points and more, looking ahead to the Hungarian Grand Prix's main race to see whether McLaren really can top the tables three days in a row.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has delivered a damning indictment of his team following George Russell's failure to escape the first part of qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix. Russell declared himself "angry" after a qualifying performance that was "a total disaster. In a wet-dry-wet session, Russell found himself without enough fuel to complete a final lap after Sergio Perez crashed, causing a red flag as a light rain shower cleared.

Wolff pulled no punches with his own assessment, stating: "That was a very disappointing qualifying session for us. It was a total underperformance from all of us. Losing a car in Q1 is clearly not acceptable. George struggled to get in a solid lap earlier in the session and we didn't execute the final run at all. That stemmed from a lack of solid communication between ourselves and the driver. We need to ensure we learn from this so that it doesn't happen again."

Speaking to media after qualifying, Sergio Perez reiterated multiple times that “in hindsight, we didn’t need [the] lap” that ended with his RB20 in the wall. Asked about what happened to cause him to lose control, Perez said, “I lost it. I think I clipped the curve, and at that point it was raining harder in Turn 8. So when I exited the curve, it was quite late in the corner, and it just sent me off completely into the wall.”

The changing conditions caused by that rain cause Perez to misjudge the corner. “[It] was so hard to judge the conditions, it was raining harder but at the end you were not losing grip,” he explained. “I was improving my lap… We didn’t need to do the lap, but you always know a lot afterwards.”

He noted that the track had seemed to remain consistent for several laps, but that rain “was just changing the track constantly. “You will arrive in a corner and all of a sudden it’s a little bit damper. The lap before, I was on a good lap, but then I arrived into Turn 12 and it was quite a lot damper.” Making the crash all the most frustrating for Perez was the fact that he felt “yesterday was probably the best Friday of the season.”

Speaking to F1TV’s Lawrence Barretto in the press pen after qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix, Yuki Tsunoda stated that he had felt extremely comfortable in his VCARB — all up until the moment he ended up in the wall.

“To be honest, I felt great in the turn — I didn’t expect that! I just ran wide to be honest,” the VCARB racer said. “Probably because I was on the limit. Ot’s obviously Q3, and half of the tire went on the grass — but to be honest with those kind of things, normally it happens.”

“But probably because it was wet, it kind of exaggerated it, and I went wide. To be honest, until that corner — I mean, even Turn 5, the lap was great so it’s very shame.” Despite the heavy hit, Tsunoda still joked with Barretto, “To be honest, I’m more worried about the car rather than my body!”

Norris’ pre-race preparations were interrupted by a throttle problem ahead of the green lights, and after some stellar work by the McLaren crew, the Brit faced a new threat after the formation lap. Piastri enjoyed a lightning-fast launch, seizing the inside on the run down to Turn One. The Aussie escaped lap one with the lead, but the drama unfolded behind him. Verstappen made it three wide on the outside of Norris and ran out of room in the process, taking to the run-off area. When he merged back onto the tarmac, he was in second place.

When the pack settled down, Piastri stretched his lead to over three seconds, and when Lewis Hamilton triggered the undercut on lap 16, both McLaren cars were able to respond and hold their positions. Verstappen, however, was not so lucky and after extending his opening stint to create a bigger tyre offset, the Dutchman emerged from the pit exit seven seconds behind Hamilton, who was running a net P3 after demonstrating mighty pace during the opening exchanges.

On lap 31, Piastri’s lead had stretched to over 4.3 seconds, but after an off-track excursion at Turn 11 on lap 34, Norris trimmed that down to under 1.5 seconds over the course of five tours around the Hungaroring. All the while, Hamilton and Verstappen scrapped tooth and nail in the battle for P3. As the final round of pit stops played out, Norris was brought in to cover off the threat of Hamilton, but when Piastri emerged from his stop two laps later, the long-time race leader was staring at the rear of his colleague, who ran three seconds up the road.

At the start of lap 63, Verstappen came in hot down the inside of Hamilton and passed the Mercedes driver. However, into Turn 1 he locked up across the path of Hamilton, hit his front tyre, gained air, and went off the track. The Dutchman re-joined but lost a place to Leclerc.

Meanwhile, Norris was arguing with his Race Engineer over the radio due to Piastri’s failure to catch Norris. The team felt that Piastri should be in the lead due to their strategy decisions. Verstappen was then claiming that Hamilton moved under braking, which his Race Engineer quickly shut down and said they were not going to argue on the radio as it was “childish”. Perhaps a comment on Norris and McLaren?

McLaren informed Norris that the way to win a championship was not alone, but was as a team. Piastri feared that the decision was being left too late. At the start of lap 68, Norris finally slowed and allowed Piastri past. He told his Race Engineer not to say anything. However, he kept with DRS range. Will he be allowed to fight back in a fair race now that he has conceded the place?

Lando Norris abided with a team order in the closing stages to let team-mate Oscar Piastri repass him as McLaren claimed a 1-2 in Formula 1’s Hungarian Grand Prix. Norris was reminded again to make the swap and he slowed his pace going onto the start-finish straight on Lap 68 to give the lead back to Piastri heading into Turn 1.

Piastri came through and managed the race to the end to take the chequered flag to achieve his maiden F1 grand prix win, becoming the seventh victor in this season. Hamilton came back a distant third in his Mercedes but logged another podium, with Leclerc taking fourth over the wounded Verstappen and Ferrari team-mate Sainz.

A near-perfect start paved the way for Piastri to claim victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix over team-mate Lando Norris. The Aussie seized the inside line at the first corner before strategy calls saw him run second to Norris for a time. However, team orders were employed, Piastri reclaiming the top spot that had been taken from him earlier in the race – much to Norris' disdain.

After 45 laps, Norris did pit. He was two seconds back from Piastri out front, feeding back out into fourth. Piastri was reassured by the team, which informed him that the move was to cover off Hamilton and that the situation would be “managed” if necessary later. The Australian pitted after 47 laps to have a set of medium tyres bolted on, rejoining behind Norris, who'd been told to hand the lead back to his team-mate through: “We'd like to re-establish the order at your convenience”.

Race leader Norris was instructed to let Piastri through, though he argued the team should have pitted his team-mate first. Second in the championship, victory for Norris was worth an additional seven points in his quest against Verstappen. The Dutchman had risen to fourth, passing Leclerc into Turn 1 on Lap 57. At McLaren, the situation was becoming heated as Norris refused to cede the place to Piastri. His advantage had extended to more than six seconds with five laps remaining. The team took to pleading with Norris to slow down and let his team-mate through, which he eventually did. Out of the final corner, he slowed as he started Lap 68 to allow Piastri back through.

An excited but tired Nicole Piastri watched from her bayside home when Piastri crossed the line in Budapest, and soon shared a text message with her son. She told this masthead of her pride in Oscar, though she hadn’t been able to talk to him yet.

“I just said: ‘I am so proud of you and I love you’,” Nicole said when asked of her immediate chat with Oscar, who said he would call his mum when he returned to his home base in Monaco. “It’s definitely his dream. It’s definitely only one [win], but he has achieved one of his dreams, so it’s a big one,” Nicole said.

Piastri left his family, including three sisters, at the tender age of 14 to head to Europe and pursue his F1 dream. That began with a year of karting, before progressing through the ranks, including Formula 3 and Formula 2 world titles. There was a much-publicised contract dispute with Alpine in 2022, a favourable ruling by the FIA’s contract recognition board allowing him to join McLaren, where he eventually took the seat of fellow Australian Daniel Ricciardo.

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen have avoided a penalty for their late race collision in Formula 1’s Hungarian Grand Prix after the FIA concluded that no driver was predominantly to blame. However, the stewards did conclude that Hamilton could have “done more” to avoid the coming together.

“I got a lot of shit thrown at me in Austria with people saying moving under braking, blah blah blah,” said Verstappen. “I am positioning my car on the initial movement and then I keep it straight. Today, under braking, he just kept turning to the right and that is why I also locked up, because I was going for the move.”

The stewards did not agree with Verstappen’s criticisms about Hamilton’s driving and, after studying video, timing and telemetry data, concluded that the seven-time champion had driven within the boundaries of the rules. However, they did note that Hamilton could have perhaps done more to avoid the collision once it became clear that Verstappen was alongside him.

Lewis Hamilton was delighted to continue Mercedes’ good run of results by taking the final podium position at the Hungarian Grand Prix, having faced a battle to make his tyres last – as well as engaging in a close scrap with Max Verstappen – en route to finishing in third.

After lining up in P5 on the grid, Hamilton had a good start and initially looked to have clinched third from Lando Norris, who had been edged out from pole. George Russell set the fastest lap of the 2024 Hungarian GP with a 1:20.305 on a weekend when he salvaged a handful of points after a devastating qualifying result at the Hungaroring in Europe. Russell was relegated to 17th on the grid when a misjudgement of weather conditions saw him fail to put in a lap before more rain, whilst he was also insufficiently fuelled for consecutive runs to understand the evolving track conditions.

It ruled out his chances of a podium just two weekends on from his first win of the season and left him very frustrated as he called for an internal review of Mercedes decision making and procedure. But for the Grand Prix on Sunday, July 21, he did as much as he realistically could to limit the damage by finishing eighth with the fastest lap for a haul of five points, finishing three seconds behind Sergio Perez at the flag.

He set the fastest lap of the race on Lap 53 as he tried to chase down the Red Bull of Perez, although he fell narrowly short in the end. The result saw him drop to eighth in the F1 standings behind Lewis Hamilton, who finished third, whilst Perez extended his gap to Russell by one point.

Martin Brundle tells Mercedes to replace Lewis Hamilton with Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Asked who he would put in the second Mercedes next season by Nico Rosberg, Brundle said: “As I’ve got George Russell who can lead the team, I would bring Antonelli along and just put up with the mistakes he’ll make at the beginning.”

Charles Leclerc has admitted that Ferrari “paid the price” with its lacklustre one-lap pace as he missed out on a podium position at Formula 1’s Hungarian Grand Prix. “Yeah, it was better than expected,” Leclerc said. “I felt like the pace was quite strong, a track like Budapest is very difficult to actually overtake, but we were in a good place.”

“The first stint was strong, the second stint was also very strong. Then we had to make a choice for the last stint in order to, whether we boxed with Lewis and we took the place to Max, or whether we stayed out with Max. We decided to come in, which I think wasn’t a bad choice.”

“But that made our last stint very tricky because I was on used Medium and very used Medium when Max came back, so it was a tricky race, but the pace was there, so that was good. But that’s not enough to satisfy me. Charles Leclerc deemed himself “relatively happy” with his fourth-place finish in the Hungarian Grand Prix but reckoned a better result could have been possible if Ferrari had better qualifying pace. The Monegasque claimed in Budapest his best result since his home win in Monaco back in May thanks to a solid drive coupled with a drama-free race.

Leclerc reckoned that Ferrari’s SF-24 had an edge over Mercedes’ contender at the Hungaroring, but admitted hitting an unsettling swirl of turbulence when running in the wake of Hamilton’s W15 “I felt like we had a bit of an edge, because on a track where dirty air is so important, I mean, it’s so detrimental for the car behind,” he said. “I felt like I could follow quite nicely, so I think we had a strong car.”

“I think Spa will be a real test for the issues we’ve had in the last few races,” he said, referring to the SF-24’s high-speed bouncing troubles that prompted Ferrari to introduce a revised floor in Hungary. It feels like a small step forward here. However, it’s not a track that put in evidence the weaknesses of our car, so let’s wait for Spa and see how much of a step forward we’ve done.”

Sainz has been linked to various F1 projects over the last handful of months, including Audi and Williams - but has declared he is remaining “patient” in order to ensure he makes the right decision.

It was a frustrating Hungarian Grand Prix for Max Verstappen after he dropped to fifth due to a combination of poor strategy from his team and incidents on track. Verstappen could be heard over team radio furiously arguing with Red Bull race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase after the team elected to make him stay out longer than everyone else before both pit stops.

What Max Verstappen engineer’s was spotted saying on the Red Bull pit-wall. After the race during the cool-down lap, Lambiase informed Verstappen that he was summoned to the medical delegate after his airborne crash with Hamilton. This led to another sarcastic exchange between the two, although Lambiase did not respond after Verstappen’s remark.

He was later seen climbing off the pit-wall and saying a phrase to himself according to Cerasoli. “Someone told me they saw Gianpiero Lambiase, his engineer, leaving the pit wall and saying to himself ‘Che giornata’ which is Italian for ‘What a day!’ We knew from yesterday Verstappen was very frustrated.”

Max Verstappen’s escalating radio exchanges and biting post-race criticism at the Hungarian Grand Prix expose the cracks emerging between himself and Red Bull as a seemingly straightforward 2024 Formula 1 title charge becomes unusually strained.

Verstappen’s message that his critics “can all f**k off” seemed inevitable in the wake of an increasingly tense, and dramatic, race for the world champion but his team also ended up in the firing line for the second time in three races.

Red Bull caught more than a few strays from Verstappen after his contentious Austrian Grand Prix battle with Lando Norris a few weeks ago, and he let rip again in Hungary on Sunday after a race in which his typically blunt back-and-forth with his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase seemed to reach new heights.

Davidson believes that he will be able to bounce back in the Hungarian GP and puts it down to a specific character trait. “Too many mistakes in too short a time. It’s a simple mistake this one because he’s on the kerb and they are painted surfaces, like any racing driver should know, and it holds the water,” said Davidson.

“It’s just one of those situations where you’re in the spotlight because of negativity and yet another mistake. It’s just piling on top of you. Sergio Perez has described how he overcame a "nightmare" start in the Hungarian Grand Prix to rescue a seventh-place finish. "We had no grip [at the start] and I was behind George, he overtook me and I nearly went off into Turn 2," he told media including RacingNews365. "It was just a nightmare, and luckily people then started getting out of the way and we caught up, but the first stint was really tricky.”

"In the second and third stint, we had some good pace, we managed to pass George and undercut him, and I think seventh was the maximum we could have done. I have to take the positives, we had a very strong Friday, we had a very strong race in terms of pace, so that is positive and I am sure that the rest will take care of itself. It is a matter of time, the most important thing is that the pace is there, and I really hope that for Belgium, I can be fighting back for the podium."

Perez is blocking out the noise and focusing on his performance. "It was positive in regards to the pace, it was just very negative with my mistake [in qualifying], so it is head down as the season is long, but the most important thing is that the pace is there," he said. "[The critics] won't go [away], the noise has been completely shut down from my side, and I am focusing on maximising my own performance to work with the team. At the end of the day, the only thing that matters to me, my boys and the people working with me is giving my very best to them because that is what they deserve.”

The red flags flew for a second time in qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix after a dramatic moment for RB’s Yuki Tsunoda – who wound up airborne after pushing too hard on the exit of Turn 5 at the Hungaroring. Tsunoda’s stable mate Sergio Perez had already crashed his Red Bull a few corners further up the road in the opening segment of qualifying, bringing out the first set of red flags.

“To be honest, I felt great in the turn – I didn’t expect that!” said Tsunoda. “I just ran wide to be honest… Probably because I was on the limit, it’s obviously Q3, and half of the tyre went on the grass – but to be honest with those kind of things, it normally happens. Following Yuki Tsunoda's dramatic crash in Saturday’s Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying, the FIA has taken swift action to prevent similar incidents occurring at the Hungaroring's Turn 5.

RB CEO Peter Bayer elaborated on the issue, speaking to Motorsport.com. “It was mentioned in the drivers' briefing,” Bayer said. “The ground sank a little and there is a wave [created by the bump] that has the effect like a sausage kerb. He found it.”

"Following Yuki Tsunoda’s incident in qualifying, the FIA has reviewed all available data as is customary with any on-track incident,” read a statement from the governing body. "After consulting with the circuit, overnight changes were made, and the last four metres of the grass strip behind the exit kerb at Turn 5 have been replaced with gravel.”

Asked about how the race panned out, Ricciardo said: “That was one of the worst ones [strategy decisions] I’ve had in 250-something races, that was a long old frustrating race where I just had a lot of anger.

“You don’t want to pull in the pits … you get the call, and you know this isn’t the thing to do. You get the call late and there’s no time to question it, because then if you miss a lap it’s even worse. But as soon as I pulled in, the cars on soft [tyres] had [already] pulled in, we’re on a medium [tyre] so let’s go, let’s use the pace we’ve got – and then we come out in traffic and it’s just a DRS train and, for what? We’re all then on the same tyre.”

“I felt like we’d taken ourselves out of the race so early, and then we’re expected to fight a car that’s coming one second a lap quicker on newer tyres. What do you want me to do? We just made it so difficult for ourselves when we had pace and we could have just stayed out, clear air, stay calm and do what we’d done all weekend. Understandably, Ricciardo had a lot to say about the call after the race. “Why they pitted me when they did at the beginning was, we followed the soft [tire-shod] cars in,” Ricciardo told assembled media. They’ve just come in, we have a clear track, and we decided to pit behind them and put ourselves in a DRS train, on the same tire — we’re all on a hard.”

Starting ninth with RB teammate Tsunoda in 10th, the pair were both jumped by the fast-starting Alex Albon and Kevin Magnussen on the soft tyres. Tsunoda did not pit when Ricciardo did. He stayed out and completed his first pitstop on lap 29 – a lap after Ricciardo completed his second stop. Ricciardo said he knew the call to pit was the wrong one straight away, but explained it came far too late – as he rounded the corner immediately before the pit entry – for him to argue the point.

"It's a late call, box, box, box, and you pit," he said. "Honestly, as soon as I'm pulling in the pits I'm questioning it, but you can't (do anything about it). You get called in ... and you have to react. We talk about strategies and that, but two cars jumped us at the start with a soft tyre. That's fine, let them go. They pit and we follow them to then just be on their strategy.”

"We would have had clear air and a chance to, I think from what I understand, do Yuki's race (and stay out). Honestly, I was expecting more. On the in-lap I was waiting for 'Sorry, we f---ed up', and I didn't get it. That made me even more angry." Ricciardo was running 11th in the closing stages, but was demoted to 12th by the Aston Martin of Lance Stroll on fresher tyres, which only frustrated the Aussie more.
