George Russell went quickest ahead of Lewis Hamilton as Mercedes secured a 1-2 in the final free practice session in the rain at the Formula 1 2024 British Grand Prix on Saturday.

The typical English ‘summer’ weather arrived on Saturday with blustery winds and heavy showers in the morning, making conditions tricky for the drivers on the rain-soaked surface at Silverstone.

Russell’s time, a 1:37.325, is some way off the lap record at the Northamptonshire circuit, but it may reflect how Mercedes are best suited to the wet as they were some distance clear of Red Bull and Ferrari, with Max Verstappen strangely off the pace down in P6.

The rain would created some unwanted jeopardy for the drivers, but the session would at least give the drivers some valuable data for the most important sessions of the weekend, with British GP weather forecasts predicting another downpour later on Saturday afternoon for qualifying and Sunday’s race.

Despite a red flag and the effect of continued precipitation throughout the session, a steady level of improvement continued beyond the half-hour mark, allowing Russell to grab the fastest time - still over 10 seconds down on Friday's dry times - before the conditions worsened.

The roulette wheel started to slow as the rain started to intensify slightly; this prompted a switch to race-style runs before further increased rain was set to hit the track. Hamilton set a 1m38.065s, which was beaten by Russell's 1m37.529s; the elder Mercedes driver attempted to respond with a 1m37.564s, but he was just shy of the mark.

Lando Norris, who headlined FP1 and FP2, was third fastest and 0.185s away from Russell's benchmark, and almost half a second clear of fourth-placed Carlos Sainz.
Verstappen landed in fifth, ahead of Leclerc and Piastri, while Fernando Alonso improved late to leapfrog Sergio Perez into the top eight. Nico Hulkenberg completed the upper half of the field, 1.8s adrift of Russell's headline effort.

The conditions hardly made the final timesheet representative of who will be on top in qualifying later but there was still a decent amount of running for a wet practice session. Mercedes' home drivers led the way with Russell topping the session on a 1m37.529s, 0.035s ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

Lando Norris, who topped both practice sessions on Friday, completed the all-British top three ahead of Carlos Sainz's Ferrari and points leader Max Verstappen, who ensured there were four different teams in the top five. Charles Leclerc was sixth quickest for Ferrari ahead of the second McLaren of Oscar Piastri and the Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso.

Sergio Perez found himself ninth but his fastest effort was 1.7s off Russell's pace and he was almost a second adrift of Red Bull team-mate Verstappen. Nico Hulkenberg continued his strong weekend for Haas by rounding out the top 10 ahead of Alex Albon and Lance Stroll.

George Russell has ended the final practice session from the Silverstone Circuit on top of the timesheet. The 60-minute outing was held in wet conditions, with Intermediate tyres used throughout.

Lewis Hamilton was second in the other Mercedes car, lapping just 0.035s down on team-mate Russell, while Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz were third and fourth respectively. Pierre Gasly was the only driver who failed to set a lap time during the session as he spun into the gravel early on to cause a red flag.

Russell won out against Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton by just 0.035 seconds as they battled over P1 on a drying track, but the rapid gains came to a abrupt stop as the rain returned, with McLaren’s Lando Norris making it an all-British top three. For Mercedes it was all smiles as Russell headed a one-two from Hamilton, while McLaren’s Lando Norris made it an all-British top three on home soil.

Fans watching on in their raincoats and wellington boots were only treated to eight minutes of action before the session was stopped. Pierre Gasly brought out the red flag after spinning at Vale and beaching his Alpine in the gravel. As a result, the Frenchman’s time on track was cut short and he was forced to watch the remainder of the action from the garage. In the short time of running before the stoppage, Yuki Tsunoda was the quickest, setting a 1.47.080. His RB teammate Daniel Ricciardo was also noted for a pit lane infringement after weaving as he returned to the garage.

Take two: After a six-minute break, cars then returned to the track with Tsunoda leading the pack out. Both Mercedes drivers, Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen and Norris all topped the timesheets within the next ten minutes as the track quickly began to dry out. Despite this though, the drivers all remained on the intermediate tyre. However, many race engineers reported over radio that rain was to be expected with 15 minutes remaining of the session. This arrived five minutes earlier than expected as Ricciardo’s race engineer reported ‘level one’ rain which was due to intensify during the latter stages of the session. Because of this, nobody could get close to the times set by both Russell and Lewis Hamilton who occupied first and second place respectively.

Max Verstappen could only qualify fourth ahead of Oscar Piastri, with Nico Hulkenberg sixth, Carlos Sainz seventh, Lance Stroll, Fernando Alonso and Alex Albon making up the rest of the top 10.

But there was a fine line between a dry track and a slippery one, as Sergio Perez found out to his misfortune. On the soft tyre in Q1, the Mexican veered off track on the wet run-off area and spun off into the gravel, essentially ruling him out of qualifying, and he will start 19th.

Verstappen struggles in British GP qualifying: From there, it was nothing short of chaos. The rain briefly returned and caused Verstappen to run off onto the gravel at Copse Corner, but unlike Perez, he managed to carry on going. Meanwhile, Hamilton set the fastest time of the session, with Verstappen scraping through in 11th despite being some 1.7 seconds adrift of the Mercedes star.

Charles Leclerc failed to progress into the final stage of qualifying at the British Grand Prix and is set to start the race from the mid-pack. The Monegasque driver's final effort was not enough to finish in the top 10, with Lance Stroll's lap time dumping him into the drop zone with the 11th quickest time.

It marks the second time this year Leclerc has failed to take part in Q2 after he was also eliminated early in Canada.Ferrari has struggled for form of late having started the season in strong fashion by scoring multiple podiums and two race wins. However, it has since been overtaken by McLaren and Mercedes in the pecking order as it continues to work on a fix to its struggles.

George Russell beat teammate Lewis Hamilton to pole position at the F1 British Grand Prix as Mercedes locked out the front-row of the grid in qualifying. Russell had provisional pole after the first runs of Q3 but seven-time world champion Hamilton briefly snatched P1 away from his teammate, only for Russell to reclaim it by 0.171s with his final effort right at the end of qualifying.

Lando Norris was 0.211s adrift in third for McLaren to make it a British 1-2-3, while Max Verstappen was over three-tenths off the pace and had to settle for fourth in his Red Bull. Nico Hulkenberg was a brilliant sixth for Haas, ahead of Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, Aston Martin's Lance Stroll and Williams driver Alex Albon, who also impressed. Fernando Alonso completed the top-10 for Aston Martin.

Q3: Work continued on Verstappen’s floor area before Q3 got underway, with damage a possibility following the Dutchman’s earlier excursion through the gravel. Albon got the first fast lap on the board: a 1:27.008, which was beaten by Verstappen with a 1:26.350. But the defending Champion’s time on top was brief as both McLarens beat the Red Bull, Norris ahead of Piastri by over two tenths of a second.

Hamilton split the two McLarens before Russell beat them all to go onto provisional pole with a 1:26.024. One more chance left for the ten remaining drivers in Qualifying to go faster still. As the chequered flag was waved, a stream of cars came into view to complete their push laps. Albon improved to eighth fastest, before Stroll claimed that position instead. Verstappen could only manage fourth, while Mercedes delighted the home crowd as Russel pipped Hamilton with a historic 1-2. Norris made it all-British top three.

Q3: After the first Q3 runs, Russell pumped in a 1:26.024 to lead Norris by 0.006s, with Hamilton 0.172s behind his team-mate.

However, on the second runs, Norris could not improve on his lap and aborted, with Hamilton finding time to beat Russell by 0.034s to jump to what would have been an eighth Silverstone pole.

However, Austria winner Russell roared through to bag a second pole of the season on a 1:25.819s to create the first British one-two-three on the grid in 56 years.

In a session that began with all cars on intermediate tyres on a drying track, Perez sat just inside the top 10 before drivers began making the switch to slicks. But Perez then went off at Copse after correcting a rear slide on the way in and (unlike Verstappen) spinning on the wetter runoff area and into the gravel, where his Red Bull became beached, causing a red flag.

As others improved over the final seven minutes, on a track that was dry enough for slicks but with fresh rain falling again, Perez dropped to 19th - ahead of only Pierre Gasly’s Alpine, which starts from the back of the grid anyway because of an engine penalty. The other Q1 fallers were Esteban Ocon in 18th, who raged against Alpine’s run plan for requiring him to do his flying lap as the rain fell, Kevin Magnussen’s Haas (17th), which reverted to former spec after picking up damage on Friday, and the Sauber of Valtteri Bottas (16th).

Bottas was among the first to set a time after the Q1 restart, but couldn’t improve on that effort as the track conditions changed and he ended up half a second adrift of making Q2 as team-mate Zhou Guanyu made the top eight in Q1. Albon, Stroll, Russell, Zhou and Hamilton are all under investigation for failing to follow the race director’s instructions in Q2.

The home crowd had three reasons to cheer when George Russell narrowly beat Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton to take pole position for the British Grand Prix, and Lando Norris was third quickest for McLaren on Saturday.

It was all about the Brits at Silverstone, with Formula 1 leader Max Verstappen taking a rare back seat and qualifying in fourth for Red Bull.

“The crowd gives us so much energy. I don’t think Silverstone could have dreamt of (this),” a jubilant Russell said. “Three Brits in the top three, we love the support and we can’t wait for the race tomorrow.”

Regarding going wide at Copse corner, the reigning champion said: “We were one of the last to head out as we didn’t expect the rain during Q1. When I got to turn seven, I couldn’t do anything. I already had rain on my visor so I braked, but the car stepped out so I tried everything to keep the car out of the wall. It did mean the rest of qualifying was ruined.”

“T9 was tricky, really difficult,” Perez explained. “When I downshifted, I basically lost the rear end quite badly and I went out of the track, and cold tyres and it was completely soaked of water outside of the track. Max Verstappen feels his fourth-place qualifying finish for the British Grand Prix is a "positive surprise" after his off-track excursion in Q1 at Silverstone. The 26-year-old revealed the extent of the damage he incurred compromised the rest of his session, saying he was "happy" to reach Q3 at all, let alone qualify fourth in the grid-setting session.

"I would like to be in the mix," Verstappen told media, including RacingNews365, when asked about the prospect of attacking the British trio starting ahead of him at Silverstone. "Actually, first of all, I need a new floor - that would help," he added. "That off, it was super unlucky.”

Lewis Hamilton won his first Grand Prix in 945 days with a stunning triumph at the British Grand Prix. In an enthralling race at Silverstone, Hamilton started second and emerged victorious in a race where starter on pole George Russell was forced into a shock retirement. Hamilton held off rivals Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, who came second and third respectively with Norris leading in what was a thrilling first half of the race.

It's the first time Hamilton has won a Grand Prix since December 2021 and the seven-time world champion broke a few records in the process. He's the oldest driver to win a Grand Prix in the 21st century and perhaps more impressively he's broken a long-standing record by Michael Schumacher.

This triumph is Hamilton's ninth at Silverstone, which is the most at a single circuit in F1 history. Martin Brundle admires Max Verstappen’s race start at the British Grand Prix: Watching back a replay of the start of the race, Brundle said: “So few revs, wow, didn’t want to get any wheelspin, unbelievably few revs to get the car off the line.

“Turning in and remarkably good front grip as well and now he’s going to slide up in the inside, and this is a big risk move there for [Max] Verstappen, it’s so easy to run into the back of the other car. And he launches around the outside of turn four, so he can straighten the car up, get good traction, good drive out of it and takes the place from Lando Norris.” Max Verstappen proves just how good he is at the British Grand Prix. After a difficult qualifying session where a damaged floor meant he could only set the fourth-fastest time in Q3, Verstappen had to bide his time during the race.

Verstappen’s race changed during the rainy spells, with Red Bull absolutely nailing his strategy and a radio message from the team suggesting that he chose exactly the right lap to pit for intermediate tyres. In the final stint, he pitted on the same lap as Hamilton, with the British driver choosing soft tyres and Verstappen going onto the hards. It was another great call and meant he could easily overtake Norris to try and catch Hamilton in the final laps.

Speaking in the drivers’ press conference after the race, Hamilton explained how he knew Norris staying out would be the key decision that could help him win the race. “On those tyres, when it was starting to dry up, it was about just trying to get the right timing. If Lando had stopped before us, it would have been very, very difficult to go by,” said Hamilton.

During the race, all three Brits were in P1 at one point or another. However, unfortunately for Russell, he was forced to retire. Norris and Hamilton were close at the end but ultimately, Norris’ tyres degraded faster and Max Verstappen was able to overtake him for P2.

Hamilton held onto the lead and crossed the finish line ahead of Verstappen by 1.465 seconds. Today’s win for Hamilton marks his 104th victory, 199th podium, his ninth win at Silverstone, and makes him the oldest F1 race winner of the 21st century.

Lewis Hamilton might find himself considering the decision to quit Mercedes after his Silverstone glory. It was his last home race with Mercedes, the team that his accomplishments are synonymous with, because he will go to Ferrari next year.

Mercedes, after 12 out of 24 rounds this year, now seem to be in a stronger state than Ferrari. Ferrari were Red Bull’s nearest competitors at the start of the season but have been outperformed by McLaren and Mercedes recently.

Noises surrounding Mercedes’ powerful 2026 engine when the new era begins are also promising for the Brackley team. But, by then, Hamilton will be challenging for more Silverstone victories in the famous red of Ferrari.

As Lewis Hamilton basked in the adulation of a record ninth British Grand Prix victory at Silverstone, McLaren's Lando Norris only had one thing running through his mind: It should have been him. It's not the first time recently Norris or McLaren has left a race weekend with that feeling. Silverstone was yet another frustrating example.

As Hamilton, a British flag draped over his shoulder and tears still welling up in his eyes, did his first interview to the ecstatic home crowd, TV cameras panned to Norris slouched over the box in parc ferme with the number three written on it. His list of 'what might have been' moments is getting longer by the race.

“It’s not just about the on-board radios, but about the debriefs. It’s time for him to bang his fist on the table. At times when he is being victimised, he must tell the team, ‘We are not going to do this anymore, friends’. We’re going to give him a course.”

Oscar Piastri has stated he knew that McLaren’s choice to leave him out an extra lap on slicks on a damp track in Formula 1’s British Grand Prix was “instantly wrong”. “I would say joint [decision], I think to be honest, that decision in the race is probably the hardest call you’re ever going to have in motor racing,” Piastri reflected.

“You’ve got two cars, 1-2, separated by half a second with rain coming down, I don’t think it gets any harder than that, so I think clearly some things we need to review. I think double stacking would have been the better call, but hindsight’s a wonderful thing.”

Oscar Piastri was robbed of any chance of a maiden victory at the British Grand Prix by a dodgy strategy call. The pair were running one-two when the rain became too heavy for dry slick tyres. Piastri was tucked up behind Norris when the latter dived into the pits for intermediate tyres on lap 27.

McLaren strategists elected against double-stacking Piastri, and sent him around on another. It proved a crucial decision - conditions deteriorated so much in that lap that by the time Piastri made it back to the pits, Norris had almost caught him back up. Having been running less than a second behind Norris when the Brit pitted, Piastri emerged from his own stop more than 21 seconds behind him.

Lando Norris had led ahead of the opening round of stops, followed by his McLaren team-mate, the pair having passed the two Mercedes and Max Verstappen as rain began to fall. The decisive moment for Piastri came on Lap 27, when the call was made to pit Norris. By remaining on track, Piastri haemorrhaged time as conditions deteriorated.

In normal conditions, the Australian would have pitted at the end of the following lap with a near 20-second delta to Norris. As it panned out, he held less than a three-second advantage when he peeled into the lane; he lost the better part of an entire pit stop in a single lap. “The last couple of corners were very, very tough,” Piastri admitted when asked how quickly he realised staying out was the wrong choice.”

“I could see on my dash that Lando was like five seconds behind me when I pitted, so I knew I was in a lot of trouble then. But yeah, I knew it was the wrong call basically instantly. Obviously frustrated at that point, but I knew that there was rain still coming,” he continued.

Oscar Piastri said McLaren were faced with the “toughest decision in motorsport” but avoided criticising the choice not to double stack him and Lando Norris. With the rest of the grid pitting for inters, McLaren had the choice of whether to go for a double stack or leave P2 (Piastri) out in the hope he would not lose too much time.

But lose time he did, heading into the pits with Norris just five seconds behind, and the tactical choice sent him down to P6 and out of win contention. As for how he felt after the call, Piastri admitted frustration and said it was good he did not open the radio but was still aiming for the win.

Zak Brown believes that Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri could both have potentially won the British Grand Prix, with the McLaren CEO stating that the team “got it wrong” in some of the key decisions taken during the wet/dry race. While the Mercedes pair of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton initially led from the front row, Norris and Piastri started to catch up just as the rain was beginning to fall at Silverstone, and by Lap 20 there was a McLaren one-two at the front of the field.

Asked about the process of making those tough decisions on the pit wall, Brown explained after the race: “It was tough. Hindsight’s 20/20, as they say. I think we ultimately got it wrong. I think both our drivers could have won there. They did an excellent job. When you’re leading the race, you also have to kind of take the first decision, so it’s a little bit easier to key off of what others did, when early on Lando and Oscar were right next to each other.”

“Obviously [if you] double stack them you’re going to lose about five seconds – turns out Oscar lost a lot more time because the track was deteriorating, so losing the five seconds there would have been a better call but, again, you don’t really know because you’re the lead car, so you’re going to be the first to find out the weather. And then there at the end, I think maybe mediums would have been a better strategy, as we saw on Oscar. Oscar was absolutely flying there, Max was flying on the hards, and softs were going to struggle. We had a set of mediums, so we’ll just go back and review it.”

Discussing Ferrari's lack of improvement over the last few Grand Prix weekends, Sainz did not mince his words as he suggested that other teams could be three months ahead in terms of research and development.

"It's clearly not good enough," fumed Sainz after finishing fifth at Silverstone. "Since Imola, everyone has upgraded and they probably added a few tenths to the car while we had to revert [back to the Imola specification].

Sainz hauled his SF-24 into contention during the wet points in a mixed-conditions encounter, but he was powerless to match those ahead once it dried and took fifth.

Carlos Sainz says Ferrari have lost “two or three months” of development time compared to their F1 rivals after removing a troublesome upgrade. Ferrari fitted their SF-24 with a major new upgrade package at last month’s Spanish Grand Prix but have been battling an unforeseen bouncing problem in high-speed corners.

After an experimental Friday at Silverstone, Ferrari reverted to their old-spec floor and bodywork which was used at Imola for the rest of the British Grand Prix weekend. Sainz qualified seventh at Silverstone, while Charles Leclerc failed to reach Q3, qualifying 11th. In Sunday’s race they finished fifth and 14th respectively.

Ferrari's previous upgrades in Barcelona, which included a revamped floor, exacerbated the SF-24's bouncing issues through high-speed corners as Sainz and Charles Leclerc struggled for performance and comfort in Spain and Austria. That led to experiments in Friday practice at Silverstone, with Sainz and Leclerc splitting packages to perform a back-to-back test and get on top of the issue.

In the end Ferrari decided it was better off rolling back the car to its Imola-spec, which has made the car more driveable through Silverstone's high-speed swoops like Maggots and Becketts. But by racing with the same car it did in May, that also means Ferrari has left a lot of performance on the table compared to Red Bull, Mercedes and McLaren, who did successfully upgrade their machines in recent months to varying degrees.

Sainz: Ferrari ‘back-to-basics’: Sainz started the British Grand Prix in seventh. The Spaniard was able to climb up to fifth in the race with the help of the Mercedes of George Russell retiring ahead of him, but the three-time race winner still finished 47 seconds off the lead. In an interview with Motorsport.com, Sainz explained that the team hadn’t made the “right calls” regarding their developments.

However, Sainz believes that his side of the garage did the “maximum” during the race, given the pace of the car they had. “I think we did the maximum,” Sainz added. “Especially in the middle of the race when it was slicks-on-wet, I managed to catch the podium positions by six or seven seconds in those conditions that I always enjoy.”

“Honestly, all the calls were pretty much spot on, all the tyres, all the radio calls. It was just a shame we were not faster because I feel like we would have been 100% in the fight for the podium or the win. But [fifth] and a bonus point at the end with the fastest lap, so we need to be happy.”

At Silverstone last weekend the difference between the information the Ferrari drivers received was stark. Sainz was given detailed guidance on the levels of rain at different parts of the circuit, while Leclerc’s information was less frequent and detailed. This led him to another costly tyre choice error.

Charles Leclerc was left to count the cost of a hasty switch to intermediate tyres when rain began to fall at Silverstone. His team mate Carlos Sainz Jnr, meanwhile not only avoided that mistake but chose arguably the perfect lap to switch to intermediates, taking around two seconds out of eventual winner Lewis Hamilton as a result.

GARY ANDERSON'S VIEW: Since the dominant victory in Monaco, Ferrari has struggled with balance issues between low and high speed. It has pursued improving low-speed performance, which when you look back to the pace in Monaco seemed unnecessary. And as a result, it has introduced more bouncing. And that was something Ferrari was generally always on the cusp of triggering even before those developments.

The Barcelona upgrade that's been taken off the car included seven items, but we can set aside the circuit-specific rear wing and the tweaked halo fairing when it comes to this problem. But more significant will have been the changes to the floor and bodywork. In Ferrari’s Barcelona submission to the FIA, this is what it listed:

Watching on as Lewis Hamilton won the British Grand Prix, Fred Vasseur says he’d rather that confidence boost had gone to today’s Ferrari driver than next season’s. But while Hamilton’s 2025 team boss Vasseur was happy for the seven-time World Champion to break his duck, he would rather it was Sainz who was celebrating the moment.

“First I would’ve been more happy to give the confidence to Carlos this weekend,” he told the media, including PlanetF1.com. “We will have time to discuss this, but I’m happy for him because I think he deserved it. But we’ll have time to discuss Lewis next year, it’s not the topic of today.”

Haas achieves best result of 2024 with heavily-upgraded car

Haas finds itself on an upward trajectory after another strong result at the British Grand Prix. Nico Hulkenberg finished sixth in the second race in succession saw, strengthening the team’s position in the Constructors’ Championship. Haas turned up at Silverstone with a heavily-upgraded car, bringing a host of aerodynamic upgrades to its VF-24.

The modifications appeared to gel well with the high-speed Silverstone circuit. Following a brilliant performance in qualifying on Saturday, Nico Hulkenberg capitalised on the misfortunes for George Russell and Charles Leclerc to finish sixth in the second race in succession.

Haas team boss Ayao Komatsu labelled their results as “excellent”. “It wasn’t an easy race, there were changeable conditions and it’s easy to say you only have to put the right tires on at the right time, but it’s much more difficult to do, but we achieved that. It’s been a huge team effort so I’m really proud of them.”

At Silverstone, Haas introduced a comprehensive new aero package for its VF-24, the centerpiece of which was a new floor design. And the changes clearly delivered a performance boost.

"The best thing is that the updates we have now are really doing something for the performance of the car. I think that's why we can really fight for fifth place in the constructors' championship,” commented Hulkenberg.

“Sometimes that's with the Astons, sometimes with the Alpines and sometimes with others," he says. "I think we're really in there now. This season we've been quite consistent, we can benefit from that."

Hulkenberg started from sixth position – his highest grid slot of the season – on Pirelli P Zero Yellow medium tires but a challenging first lap shuffled the German down to ninth. Hulkenberg made gains when the rain fell mid-race, pitting for Cinturato Green intermediate tires on lap 26, emerging in seventh place.

Hulkenberg gained one more spot when George Russell retired his Mercedes, before pitting again on lap 39 for Red soft tires when the circuit dried, coming out in sixth. Hulkenberg retained the position through the final stint of the race to make it successive sixth places, equaling his and MoneyGram Haas F1 Team’s best race result of 2024.
