Austrian GP qualifying results: Verstappen seals sensational pole as Hamilton beaten again.
Max Verstappen delivered a qualifying session to remember, storming to pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix. Lando Norris was second-fastest for McLaren, while George Russell rounded out the top three after beating his team-mate once again.

Max Verstappen produced a complete qualifying performance to claim the Austrian Grand Prix pole position. Hamilton ultimately finished the session in P7 but told race engineer Pete Bonnington “I’m just slow mate” after an underwhelming final run.

When the first laps of Q3 were laid down, the order was roughly as expected with Verstappen leading Norris, but the gaps between the pair were far from regular as the reigning champion punched in a time that was over three-and-a-half tenths clear of the McLaren man.

Verstappen stretched that lead on his final run as Norris and Russell followed suit. Oscar Piastri lost a lap for track limits, dropping him to P7, while Charles Leclerc went off track in the final sector as he wrestled with his SF-24 machine.

Q3: The gravel at Turn 6 was being cleared up and delayed the start of Q3. When Q3 began, there was a slight lull before drivers emerged from their garages. Perez and Ocon were on the backfoot without new tyres for Q3. Hamilton pulled out of the Mercedes garage, taking one of the jacks with him. Luckily, it came loose from his car and no one was injured. The unsafe release was noted by race control.

Verstappen began his lap, getting a nice tow from Hulkenberg at the start. However, Norris set the fastest first sector. Verstappen was quickest in Sector 2. Piastri finished his first flying lap for P1, quickly topped by Verstappen with a 1:04.426. Norris crossed the line for P2, 0.361 seconds behind the leader. Leclerc finished his lap for P3 and Hamilton for P5. Russell then finished his lap with a P3 time.

After the opening laps, Verstappen was in P1, Norris in P2, Russell P3, Leclerc P4, Piastri P5, Hamilton P6, Sainz P7, Perez P8, Ocon P9, and Hulkenberg P10. The cars re-entered the pits readying for their final run of Qualifying.
On the final flying laps, Verstappen, Piastri, and Sainz all set a green Sector 1. Verstappen’s second sector was yellow, but the third was purple. He set a 1:04.314. Piastri followed 0.472 slower than Verstappen for P2. Sainz finished in P4. Norris pipped his teammate to second. Meanwhile, Leclerc had a snap of oversteer, ruining his chances. He went wide and off the track into the gravel and grass in a dramatic fashion, damaging his car.

Max Verstappen destroys rivals in ominous Austrian GP qualifying display
The Dutchman continued his fine run of form at Red Bull's home race and will start from the front of the grid

Max Verstappen produced a timely reminder of his incredible pace in the Red Bull after qualifying on pole for Sunday’s Formula 1 2024 Austrian Grand Prix to seal his second pole of the weekend. Just hours after the Dutchman fought off both McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri to win the F1 Sprint, Verstappen‘s blistering pace proved to be good enough for the Austrian GP pole to match as he dominated qualifying at the Red Bull Ring – going over three tenths of a second quicker than his closest rival.

Verstappen’s Q2 time of a 1:04.469 was comfortably the quickest lap of the weekend and he went marginally quicker in Q3 on his first run to set a time of 1:04.314. Norris will start alongside him on the front row in second, with George Russell third and Carlos Sainz fourth. Lewis Hamilton is on the third row in P5, Charles Leclerc sixth and Piastri, who finished second in the sprint race, is down in seventh after having his time deleted due to a track limits violation. Sergio Perez, Nico Hulkenberg and Esteban Ocon made up the rest of the top 10.

Verstappen smashes opposition to secure pole position for Austrian Grand Prix

Having dominated the F1 Spielberg Sprint earlier today, reigning champion Max Verstappen smashed his rivals in qualifying to take a dominant pole position for tomorrow’s Austrian Grand Prix. F1Technical’s pitlane reporter Balazs Szabo reports on the nail-biting main qualifying from the Spielberg. Max Verstappen fractionally beat the McLaren of Lando Norris yesterday, but he managed to find another gear for today’s main qualifying session.

The Dutchman set an eye-watering time of 1m04.314s to secure pole position for his team’s home race. McLaren driver Lando Norris was his closest challenger once again, but the Briton was could not get within three tenths of a second to Verstappen, but it was still enough for him to take P2 on the grid. His team-mate Oscar Piastri looked strong, but he had his best lap time deleted for track limits infringement which means that he will only start from P7 tomorrow.

Max Verstappen pole a ‘great statement’ for Red Bull, a ‘reality check’ for F1 2024 rivals
    29 Jun 2024
    Elizabeth Blackstock
    PlanetF1.com

Max Verstappen has broken his pole position drought in stunning fashion for the Austrian Grand Prix. While the rest of the field is extremely tight, Verstappen managed to secure a gap of 0.404s over second-place Lando Norris. Verstappen understandably sees this masterclass as a “great statement” about the performance of his RB20 — but his competition on the Austrian Grand Prix field see things a little differently. For them, the Dutch driver’s pace is a “reality check.”

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri perhaps said it best when he referred to Max Verstappen’s pace as a ‘reality check’ while speaking after qualifying. He admitted that he was “a little bit” shocked by the RB20 racer’s pace. “His lap in Q2 was I think a bit of a reality check for everyone, and obviously he repeated it in Q3,” Piastri said to media including PlanetF1.com. “The gap seems to be a little bit bigger in that session for whatever reason, and clearly they’re still the force to beat.”

Piastri wasn’t the only driver to comment on Verstappen’s speed. In speaking about the changes Mercedes made to his car between the sprint race and qualifying, Lewis Hamilton said his machinery felt better — but still behind. I mean, we’re down a lot in the high speed compared to Max,” he said. “It’s insane how much faster they are in high speed.”

Max Verstappen has described Red Bull as “on fire” after a dominant performance in F1 qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix. “I think the whole session went really well,” Verstappen said. “The car was in a better window. I could push a bit more, rely on the grip of the car, the balance. It was very enjoyable.”

“I was just trying to progress through Q1 without using a new set. And that worked. And then from there, we just tried to fine-tune the balance here and there a little bit. But every lap that I did was feeling good.”

“And then it's all about, of course, trying to just nail every corner. It's been a while that I've felt like this in the car and also looking at the gap. The last few races, I've always been very close in front or behind. So this was definitely very positive, I think, for the team.”

Ferrari offer McLaren a case study in ruining Verstappen and Red Bull’s home party
    30th June 2024
    Will Wood
    RaceFans

Two years ago, Max Verstappen headed into the Austrian Grand Prix Sunday looking like he was almost certain to win. He’d taken pole position for the sprint race on Friday, won the sprint race on Saturday and was due to start from pole for the main event on Sunday. But instead, Charles Leclerc and Ferrari spoiled the party for Verstappen, his team and the many thousands of Dutch fans in attendance by executing a brilliant strategic race to beat the world champion to the chequered flag.

That weekend, Leclerc looked to be lacking the speed to beat Verstappen in a straight fight during the sprint race, only to comfortably match Verstappen’s speed over the course of the race. And in 2024, McLaren have to find a way to emulate Ferrari’s achievement if they are to avoid being beaten into second place for the fifth consecutive race.

George Russell explains how he plans to approach the start of Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix.

    Lewis Larkam
    Crash.Net

George Russell says he doesn’t plan on getting involved in a fight with Max Verstappen and Lando Norris at the start of the F1 Austrian Grand Prix. Last week in Barcelona, Russell made an incredible start from fourth and swept past both Norris and Verstappen to move into the lead by Turn 1.

But the Briton has downplayed talk of a repeat, insisting he is going to “sit back and watch it all take place” instead. “I think it’s a bit more challenging here,” Russell said. “I think these guys always get their elbows out. So maybe this time it’s, you know, sit back and watch it all take place.”

“But I think, you know, last week I lost a lot of time battling with Lando and probably focused too much on the guys ahead of me and ultimately that cost me the position to Lewis and almost to Charles as well. So, as I said, I think the race is behind us tomorrow.”

Lewis Hamilton has escaped punishment for an unsafe release during the final part of qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix, however, Mercedes has been handed a €5,000 fine for the incident. Heading out for his first run in Q3, Hamilton dragged out with him a hose that connects to the back of the exhaust to release gases out of the garage, and its associated trolley.

A stewards' statement read: "The Stewards heard from the team representative and reviewed video evidence. Car 44 was released from the garage in an unsafe manner dragging a jack and an exhaust extractor behind it. The Stewards acknowledge that the team immediately informed the driver to stop to prevent any further damage and/or dangerous situation."

George Russell snatches Austrian GP win after dramatic Verstappen Norris clash.
George Russell pulled off a shock victory at the Formula 1 2024 Austrian Grand Prix after Max Verstappen and Lando Norris’ dramatic late collision in Sunday’s race.

Verstappen looked to be cruising towards the victory with an eight-second lead over Norris, until a slow stop pushed the Dutchman back into the McLaren driver’s clutches. The pair engaged in an epic 10-lap battle for the win, with Verstappen and Norris both suffering punctures on Lap 64 after a controversial clash, promoting Russell into the lead.

And he held off the challenge from Oscar Piastri late on to clinch his first win since Brazil 2022, as Russell celebrated his Austrian GP success at the Red Bull Ring. Norris was forced to retire with damage, while Verstappen – came out in P5 after his pit stop – was handed a 10-second penalty for causing a collision by the stewards. Piastri did his best to close the gap to Russell but was left with too much to do and settled for P2, while Carlos Sainz took home an unlikely podium for Ferrari.

Lewis Hamilton suffered a number of issues with his car and penalties, but came home to take fourth on a fine weekend for Mercedes. Nico Hulkenberg fought off Sergio Perez to claim sixth behind Verstappen, with Kevin Magnussen eighth, Daniel Ricciardo ninth and Pierre Gasly 10th.

Dramatic Verstappen/Norris clash hands Russell Austrian GP win
    Jun 30, 2024
    Jack Cozens
    The Race

A dramatic collision between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris handed George Russell and Mercedes a first Formula 1 victory in a year and a half at the Austrian Grand Prix. Verstappen had absolutely dominated the first two thirds of the race, leading by as much as eight seconds from Norris. But an unhappy long middle stint on hard tyres he didn't especially like and then a slow final pitstop where the left rear tyre initially refused to release meant Verstappen rejoined only just ahead of Norris.

The McLaren - on new mediums versus a used set for the Red Bull - then quickly got into Verstappen's DRS range and mounted attack after attack, with the two drivers' radio comments about each other's driving getting increasingly terse. A dive with 12 laps to go got Norris ahead into the Turn 3 hairpin but he claimed the line by running wide over the run-off so quickly handed the place back.

It would turn out that that moment was Norris's fourth track limits breach of the race, which incurred a five-second time penalty, but with that yet to be awarded their battle continued. Next time they got alongside each other it was Verstappen who stayed ahead by running wide. And then the contact came on the approach to the hairpin, a rub of wheels giving both cars punctures and sending them slewing off the road before a bizarre wheel-to-wheel battle down the hill with both cars lurching around with damage.

Verstappen vs. Norris: With the gap closing, Norris had DRS on Verstappen and the race was on. There are three DRS zones around the Red Bull Ring for a seven-tenths advantage. Norris attempted an overtake into Turn 3 with a late braking move, echoing his Sprint Race manoeuvre. However, he could not make it stick. Norris reported that Verstappen reacted to his move in the braking zone.

Norris was handed a black-and-white flag warning for track limit violations. On lap 59, Norris made a late move on Verstappen and got past for the lead of the race. However, the McLaren driver locked up and ran wide, leaving the track. He was still ahead but was required to let Verstappen back through to P1. Race control then noted Norris for track limits. On lap 61, Verstappen defended against another move from Norris. However, he made a double move which Norris reported on the radio. Meanwhile, Piastri was closing in on Sainz in P4 and Perez was catching Hulkenberg in P7.

Another move from Norris on lap 63 into Turn 3. Verstappen went off the track defending and kept the place. However, Norris complained that Verstappen should hand him the position. Verstappen told Red Bull mechanics that he was forced off by Norris.
A new race leader: On lap 64, there was contact between Verstappen and Norris. Norris took the lead due to Verstappen picking up a puncture from the contact. However, it soon became clear that Norris also got a puncture and was also handed a five-second penalty. This incident gave Russell the lead. On lap 66, the Virtual Safety Car came out. Toto Wolff, Mercedes Team Principal was heard on the radio to Russell telling him that he “can win this”.

Late in the race, Verstappen crashed into Norris. That knocked Norris out of the race, led to a 10-second penalty for himself, and paved the way for Mercedes’ George Russell to get his second career F1 win (and the first for him and for Mercedes since 2022). Here’s that crash:

Thus, this was a remarkable moment for Russell. But it only came thanks to that Verstappen-Norris incident, which itself came after those two had been going back and forth all day. And there may be further developments to come from that. But it certainly worked out well for Russell and Mercedes.

Austrian GP: Max Verstappen and Lando Norris tempers flare with Russell gifted the win

    PlanetF1.com

George Russell secured an unexpected victory for Mercedes at the Austrian Grand Prix, the Briton benefitting from the inevitable crash between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris. Although Verstappen seemed to be cruising to the victory, a late-race challenge from Norris saw tempers flare between the two protagonists resulting in a crash with Norris out of the race and a puncture dropping Verstappen to P5.

As tempers flared – CONTACT! The two touched as Norris again tried to pass, Verstappen left without a rear left tyre and Norris also suffering a puncture. As they limped back to the pits, Russell took the lead but was being chased by Piastri and Sainz. Verstappen returned to the race down in fifth place but was hit with a 10-second penalty for causing a collision.

Heading into the final lap, Russell kept it neat and tidy, the Briton racing to his second Formula 1 victory by two seconds ahead of Piastri with Sainz joining them on the podium. Hamilton was fourth ahead of Verstappen while Hulkenberg took sixth off Perez with Magnussen, Ricciardo and Gasly completing the points.

Russell swore at Wolff because ‘I almost crashed when he screamed in my ear’.

Russell’s race engineer Marcus Dudley told him Verstappen had suffered a puncture in the collision. As it emerged Norris had also incurred damage, Wolff called out: “George, you can win this. You can win this, George.”

Wolff sent his message as Russell was heading into the high-speed braking zone at turn three. Race engineers ordinarily avoid talking to their drivers at these critical points on the lap, and an alarmed Russell told his team boss: “Let me f^(#ing drive.”

However Russell said he appreciated Wolff’s eagerness for the team to score its first win since the penultimate victory of 2022. “I think it just goes to show the passion that we all share,” he said. “And it’s obviously been a tough couple of years for us. It feels great to be back on the top step.” Although it took a slice of luck for Russell to score his first win since Interlagos in 2022, Russell was happy to take it.

‘Single dumbest thing in 12 years’: Why ‘embarrassing’ radio message had Merc boss ‘forever ashamed’
    July 1st, 2024 7:47 am
    Fox Motorsport from Fox Sports
    Fox Sports (Australia)

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff conceded he will “be forever ashamed” after his radio message almost derailed George Russell’s race at the Austrian Grand Prix. With seven laps to go, Max Verstappen and Lando Norris collided at Turn 3 and caused both drivers to sustain a puncture.

“We can win this,” Wolff told Russell over the radio. The only issue was Wolff’s passionate radio message came when Russell was braking at the end of a long straight. Speaking after the race, Wolff recognised the error of his ways and how easily he could have distracted Russell in a crucial braking zone.

“I think I know the drivers pretty well and what they need at times to encourage or to refocus, because I spend so much time with them,” Wolff told media in Austria. “So I think I know the psychology. But this one is the single dumbest thing I’ve done in 12 years at Mercedes. I will be forever ashamed of this.”

‘You Can Win This!’ - Wolff's radio blunder almost crashed Russell
    21:00 Sun, 30 Jun 2024
    Phillip van Osten
    F1i.com

Austrian Grand Prix winner George Russell revealed a near-miss in the closing stages of the race, thanks to a well-meaning but poorly timed message from Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff. With five laps to go and his head down, focused on maintaining his lead to the checkered flag, Wolff’s booming voice suddenly bellowed over the radio: "YOU CAN WIN THIS!"

Under heavy braking, the Briton was understandably startled and retorted with a curt, "LET HIM DRIVE!" While his heart was clearly in the right place but his finger a little too quick on the radio button, Wolff admitted he had totally messed up. He hadn’t checked where Russell was on the track before blasting him with his supportive message.

"That was one of the stupidest things I've ever done, I have to say. I didn't look where he was at all," Wolff admitted to Sky Germany. "I just saw the two of them crash into each other. It's the first time that's happened to me in twelve years. He's fully on the brakes at 320 km/h and I tell him that the two of them have collided. I have to think about it first."

Russell said Wolff's radio call almost made him crash
    20:24 Sun, 30 Jun 2024
    The Straits Times

Surprise Austrian Grand Prix winner George Russell said his Mercedes team boss almost made him crash after he took the lead in Sunday's race. Principal Toto Wolff, whose team had not won a race since 2022, shouted "George, you can win this" over the radio without checking where the driver was on track.

Wolff told reporters he knew all about driver psychology and his spontaneous reaction had been "the single dumbest thing I've done in 12 years at Mercedes. "I will be forever ashamed because you look at where you message the driver and you don’t do it during braking or in high-speed corners," added the Austrian. Despite that, there were no illusions about where the team stood compared to rivals.

"The team have worked so hard. We've made so many strides since the start of the season. The last three races have been incredible so, more to come," said Russell. "I think it's no secret Red Bull with Max and McLaren with Lando are still a little bit out in front, but we're always putting ourselves in that third place position the last couple of races. And obviously, if anything happens up front, we're there to pick it up."

The contact between Norris and Verstappen drew an excitable response from Wolff, who took to team radio to tell Russell: “We can win this.” Wolff’s message came as Russell was braking at the end of a long straight, with the British driver quipping that he “almost crashed” after his team boss’s transmission.

“I could have taken him out with that message, imagine how that would have felt. I’m emotional. I enjoy us doing well and I enjoy seeing Lewis [Hamilton] and George doing well. I was just carried away with that situation and I think that’s what he said afterwards, but that was seriously embarrassing.” Toto Wolff.

Russell Says Austrian GP Victory Makes up for Montreal Disappointment
    June 30, 2024
    Joe Briley
    The Checkered Flag

George Russell feels that his second career win at the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix has made up for the “missed opportunity” at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix when he started from pole position. “It’s huge for us. I think we had such a great opportunity in Canada, I feel like that was a missed opportunity for me and now this feels like we made up for that. It’s been a year and a half of so much hard work – this year starting on the back foot. Everyone came together and turned this around. Super happy and proud of everyone.”

The former Williams Racing driver managed the race out in the lead really well though and led the remaining 7 laps to cross the line in the lead for just the second time in his Formula 1 career (his first win coming at the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix). Speaking to F1TV, Russell spoke about the progress the team has made: “To be honest I was really happy with the race, P3 was going to be a great result for us.”

“I knew Lando was pretty fired up after yesterday, I saw the battles up front and you’ve got to be there to pick up the pieces and that’s what we were and at the start of the year we were never there so the team have done an amazing job, improving the car. I’m really proud to be on the top step.”

Russell vowed to celebrate with long-term Spanish girlfriend Carmen Montero Mundt in Monaco on Sunday evening. “I am flying back tonight and I have got my girlfriend waiting for me back at home and one of my good friends is there, too,” said Russell.

“After my first victory I headed straight on to a flight from Sao Paulo to Dubai for 15 hours. I want to celebrate this time because you cannot take these moments for granted. I feel I have a lot left in me and a lot more victories to come in the future but you need to enjoy it. I won’t go as hard as Lando (Norris) did (after his win in Miami). If it is 50 per cent as hard as Lando’s celebrations it will be a pretty massive night.”

Piastri: “When it’s that close, you can’t help but hurt”.
“I know it's only my fourth podium in F1 but so close to a win, it hurts a little bit,” Piastri confessed.

    Speedcafe

Piastri had started the race seventh after his best lap in qualifying was deleted for track limits. Had that time been allowed, a point McLaren fought for as it protested the result of qualifying, he would have started third. Instead, he battled his way through the pack to mount a late challenge for an unlikely victory. Second equals his career best having finished second in Monaco and in last year's Qatar Grand Prix.

“I know it's only my fourth podium in F1 but so close to a win, it hurst a little bit,” Piastri confessed. “But good points, obviously. I think the second half of the race we were coming on pretty strong. Just when it's that close, you can't help but hurt a little.”

So close to a win it hurts, says runner-up Piastri

    The West Australian

Finishing second at a drama-laden Austrian Grand Prix was a bitter-sweet experience for Mclaren's Oscar Piastri. The Australian had slammed his dropping from third to seventh on the starting grid for exceeding track limits in Saturday's qualifying as "embarrassing" for Formula One. But he fought back on Sunday to achieve his fourth podium in Formula One.

That came after a collision between team-mate Lando Norris and Red Bull's triple world champion Max Verstappen forced the leading pair out of the race. It left Piastri wondering what might have been had Saturday's controversy been avoided.

"There's a lot of what ifs and maybes. Obviously, starting from yesterday I know it's only my fourth podium in F1, so close to a win, it hurts," he said. "I think second half of the race we were coming on pretty strong, I am happy with another podium, when it's that close you can't help but hurt a bit."

Piastri filled with 'hurt' after missed maiden victory
Oscar Piastri started seventh but recovered to second in the 2024 F1 Austrian Grand Prix.

Oscar Piastri has conceded finishing second in the Austrian Grand Prix "hurt" as he came agonisingly close to a maiden victory. The McLaren driver started in seventh after exceeding track limits in qualifying, but quickly made up places in the race - a move on Lewis Hamilton mid-race promoted him to fifth, where he looked set to finish.

Having struggled recently during the Spanish Grand Prix, Piastri appeared to bounce back in the Red Bull Ring. The Australian was back to his best in Spielberg and now hopes to take his positive result forwards to the British Grand Prix. "It was a place of good memories from last year, and hopefully we can be up the front again obviously," added Piastri.

'I'm so close to a win': Oscar Piastri 'hurting' after finishing second in Austrian Grand Prix
    July 1, 2024
    Damien McCartney
Channel 9's Wide World of Sports

Aussie young gun Oscar Piastri has suggested his second place in the Austrian Grand Prix was a win gone begging. Piastri was one of the main beneficiaries from a controversial clash between his McLaren teammate Lando Norris and Max Verstappen with seven laps to go. He crossed the line to seal his fourth F1 podium – his third second place finish – less than two seconds behind the race-winning Mercedes of George Russell.

Piastri started Sunday night's (AEST) race from seventh after his quickest lap in qualifying – which would have been good enough for third on the grid behind Verstappen and Norris – was deleted for exceeding track limits by the barest of margins. The usually calm and collected Piastri blew up, and labelled the call "embarrassing". Russell was promoted to third on the grid, which only further rubbed salt into the wound.

Piastri's race could've very easily ended at the first corner, when he and the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc made contact. Leclerc was forced to pit for a new front wing and plummeted to the rear of the field, but Piastri miraculously survived without damage. Piastri got past Lewis Hamilton shortly before the final pitstops, and emerged from his own behind the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz, who he passed on the same lap as the Norris-Verstappen collision.

‘It hurts a little bit’ – Piastri disappointed to miss out on win in Austria
    17:51 Sun, 30 Jun 2024
    Formula One - Official Site

Oscar Piastri was left feeling a little “hurt” at narrowly missing out on what would have been his first F1 Grand Prix victory at the Austrian Grand Prix, having finished just 1.906s away from winner George Russell at the line. It proved to be a weekend of mixed emotions for Piastri who, after snatching P2 in Saturday’s Sprint from McLaren team mate Lando Norris, had looked on course for a top-three result in qualifying before his lap time was deleted due to track limits.

This dropped him down to a starting position of P7 but, after battling forwards during the race, the Australian then found himself in surprise contention for the win following a dramatic collision between leaders Max Verstappen and Norris which resulted in both sustaining punctures.

With Verstappen slipping backwards to fifth and Norris having to retire owing to the damage sustained to his car, this allowed the previously P3 Russell to take the lead, while Piastri overtook Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz for P2 and tried to chase down the Mercedes.

Piastri: Track limits deletion fuelled Austria F1 podium charge
    30 Jun 2024
    Taylor Powling
    Motorsport Week

Oscar Piastri has admitted the track limits saga which cost him third on the grid fuelled his surge through the field to claim second in Formula 1’s Austrian Grand Prix. McLaren’s status as Red Bull’s nearest challenger continued at the Red Bull Ring as Lando Norris pressured Max Verstappen into instigating a clash between the two.

Piastri could have been in the prime position to capitalise on their squabble had his fastest qualifying time not been overruled due to a track limits violation at Turn 6. Instead, George Russell’s Mercedes took the spoils as Piastri completed a late overtake on Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari to recover from seventh place at the start to second.

Australian star Oscar Piastri had an all-time response to Austrian grand prix winner George Russell as they watched footage of Max Verstappen and Lando Norris’ race-deciding collision. As is tradition in the post-race formalities, the drivers re-watched some of the highlights in the cool-down room. It wasn’t long before Norris and Verstappen’s collision was played on the screen in front of the trio.

“Cool fight though,” Russell said. “That was a very cool fight.” However, Piastri issued the perfect reply: “Well, you did just win the race because of it.” Piastri’s retort earned laughs from Russell and Sainz. Knowing Piastri’s earlier claim wasn’t exactly false, it prompted further nervous laughs from Russell and Sainz before the Mercedes driver declared: “We shouldn’t laugh.”

Sainz looking on bright side with 'bonus' podium in Austria
    19:19 Sun, 30 Jun 2024
    Andrew Lewin
    F1i.com

Carlos Sainz insisted that he was "quite happy, quite proud" of finishing on the podium today in the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. "Quite an eventful race up front," he told the media in parc ferme after the finish. "Happy days for Formula 1 that there's a bit of action up front, and we're getting to see some nice battles.”

"We knew the Mercedes today might have a bit of an advantage on race pace, but we tried everything to keep up," he said. "It just looked like they had this half a tenth to a tenth of pace advantage. We set our targets in trying to beat the Mercedes and we managed to beat one, even if one of them got ahead," he continued. "I was behind the two of them, passed Lewis, and then it was all about trying to keep up with George.”

"Red Bull and McLaren were in a league of their own this weekend, then there was a step to George and me battling for that P3, P4," he said. "We tried everything we could but we know we've been struggling the last few races. In the end P3 is a good result I think," he decided, calling it a "bonus" for the team. "We can be quite happy, quite proud of that because this weekend hasn't been easy for us. To come away with 15 points and a P3 is a good result.”

Ferrari’s Weekend In Austria Is Bittersweet
    June 30, 2024
    Erika Di Guido
    Last Word On Sports

Carlos Sainz finished on the podium in a twist of fate, with Charles Leclerc just outside the points zone. Ferrari had another difficult weekend in Austria. The Red Bull Ring in Spielberg should have been a track where Ferrari could show its full potential. But the struggles for the Cavallino continued. Ferrari still suffers in high-speed corners and need to improve their tyre management, especially for flying laps compared to their rivals.

The race for the two Ferrari drivers was quite different. While Sainz, starting ahead, had to chance to finish on the podium, Leclerc was more unlucky. At the start, he was closed on both sides, squeezed between Sergio Perez and Oscar Piastri. The contact with the latter forced the Ferrari to pit early for a front wing and tyre change, and he fell at the back of the grid.

Since then, his race was long and filled with three more stops at the box, hoping to climb to the points zone. However, it was unsuccessful. Leclerc finished his race in P11. On the other hand, Carlos Sainz was P3 after the collision between Norris and Verstappen. His Ferrari wasn’t able to catch George Russell, the new race leader, who was on Hards. The Mercedes crossed the finish line and Russell became a two-time race winner.

Sainz happy with ‘bonus’ podium in Austria while Leclerc reflects on first-lap clash with Piastri and Perez

    Formula One - Official Site

Ferrari endured mixed fortunes in the Austrian Grand Prix, with Carlos Sainz benefiting from the drama up ahead to claim a surprise podium while Charles Leclerc faced a difficult Sunday, having been caught up in a first-lap incident that damaged his front wing.

Asked if he had felt that Ferrari had made a step relative to their performance last time out in Barcelona, Sainz answered: “I think it’s very tight with Merc. In the last two weekends they’ve been – or at least the faster Merc – has been a little bit quicker than the faster Ferrari [in] both cases, so we just need to make a step going into Silverstone if we want to fight up there.”

“And now we’re going to focus on that, see if we can put together a solid weekend in Silverstone and edge them out, and then bring upgrades to make sure that we try to get closer to McLaren and Red Bull. Earlier in the season, obviously we could have benefitted more, like George did from the fight up front. The reality is that, at this stage of the season, we are just trailing the Merc and a step behind McLaren and Red Bull. We’ve had some issues in the car the last couple of races, which we are looking forward to resolving soon.”

Carlos Sainz sends Williams clear message over F1 future: “I’m going to take all the time I need”
Carlos Sainz isn't going to rush into making a decision over his F1 future.

    Crash.Net

Carlos Sainz insists he’s in no rush to decide his F1 future despite some teams losing patience over how long he’s taking to make a decision. Sainz’s F1 future continues to be a hot topic with three teams - Alpine, Sauber and Williams - all reportedly interested. Speaking in the post-race FIA press conference, Sainz batted off questions that he would be pressured into a decision.

“As I said before, for sure that pressure, I’m not going to receive it on a Sunday afternoon after a podium where I’m keen to enjoy it,” he said. “As I said before, I think it’s sometimes, like George was saying, we take it for granted when we’re in one of these podiums celebrating, wearing a Ferrari suit.”

“And yeah, I’m going to be honest with and straightforward with the teams. But it’s such an important decision for me also that I’m going to take all the time that I need to take it. And if there’s teams that cannot wait or are a bit impatient, yeah, I cannot do anything about it. It’s going to be my future, my decision, and I’m going to try and be as honest as possible with everyone and give myself the time that I need.”

Alpine's Briatore says Sainz a super driver
    JULY 1, 2024
    GrandPrix.com

The likelihood that Carlos Sainz will sign a contract with Williams for 2025 and beyond has reportedly almost completely collapsed. Indeed, while Sainz had originally hoped for a top seat for the future - like Red Bull or Mercedes - his only other real option is a late bid by new Alpine executive advisor, Flavio Briatore.

It's believed the 3-time grand prix winner is leaning towards Briatore's offer of a mere single-year deal, leaving the door open for Sainz for a 2026 move to a true top team. When asked by DAZN on Sunday, Briatore was coy about Sainz.

“Carlos Sainz is a very good driver who will drive for Ferrari until the end of the season, the 74-year-old Italian said. That's what I know about Carlos - that he is a super driver.”

‘They are chasing’: Carlos Sainz has now received ‘improved’ offer from £1.1bn F1 team for 2025

Carlos Sainz was all set to be announced as a Williams driver at the Spanish Grand Prix last weekend. Given that it was his home race, James Vowles would have seen it as perfect timing. The F1 paddock was ‘certain’ that Williams would unveil Sainz on Friday. That, in turn, would trigger Mercedes’ announcement that they had promoted Kimi Antonelli to replace Lewis Hamilton. But in the end, Sainz wasn’t quite ready to sign on the dotted line. The uncertainty around his future is set to drag on for another race.

Alpine pushing for Carlos Sainz after signing Pierre Gasly. The reason Sainz reportedly hesitated was that Alpine have made a renewed push to sign him. He previously spent a year at Enstone in 2018 when the team was still known as Renault. Sure enough, F1TV journalist Lawrence Barretto says that the £1.1bn French team (Forbes) have now tabled an ‘improved’ offer. The pursuit has been going on for ‘months’, but they now seem more determined than ever.

“Alpine’s next task is to nail down their second seat. They are chasing Carlos Sainz, having been in talks for months, and improved their offer recently. I understand Sainz hasn’t made a call on his future yet, with 3 offers (the others from Williams and Sauber/Audi) on the table.” Lawrence Barretto (@lawrobarretto) June 27, 2024

Lando Norris demands apology from ‘reckless, stupid and desperate’ Max Verstappen.
Lando Norris has demanded an apology from a “reckless, stupid and desperate” Max Verstappen following their dramatic collision in the closing stages of the Austrian Grand Prix.
    30 June 2024
    The Telegraph

“If he admits to being a bit stupid, running into me, and just being a bit reckless, then I will have a small amount of respect for it. I expected tough, fair, respectful on-the-edge racing, and I don’t feel like that is what I got. It seemed a little bit desperate from his side and it didn’t need to be that way. He saw me move and then moved.'

Norris was on the radio, taking aim at Verstappen’s tactics. “He cannot keep moving after I move,” said the Englishman. “It is just dangerous. We will have a big shunt.” With eight laps to run, an increasingly frustrated Norris tried for a third time. Defending his position, Verstappen ran off the road at the third corner, and he rejoined the asphalt with his lead still intact.

“He has to give the position back,” said Norris, who was now on the ragged edge, and about to be handed a five-second penalty for repeatedly exceeding track limits. Verstappen hit back over the radio. “He forced me off,” said the Dutchman. “He just divebombed me again. That is not how you overtake.”

McLaren's Lando Norris said he would lose respect for Max Verstappen if the Red Bull driver did not apologise for a collision that wrecked their Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday.

A disappointed Norris, who retired with a puncture and car damage, said it was a tough one to take and accused Verstappen of being reckless and desperate in his driving.

"It depends what he says. If he says he did nothing wrong, then I lose a lot of respect for that," he told Sky Sports television when asked if their relationship would change.

Lando Norris makes 'dangerous driving' claim after Max Verstappen Austria GP crash

"He reacted to my move and you are not allowed to do that," protested Norris over the radio. Three laps later, and Norris was at it again. He launched his McLaren down the inside of Verstappen at the third bend but carried too much speed into, and the world champion swooped back ahead of the next turn. Norris was back on the intercom, taking angst at Verstappen's tactics. "He cannot keep moving after I move," said the Englishman. "It is just dangerous. We will have a big shunt."

At Turn 3, Norris moved to Verstappen's outside but they came together and banged wheels. Verstappen suffered a left-rear puncture and one of Norris' tyres was also shredded. Verstappen emerged from the pits in fifth but Norris' race was over. And the stewards took a dim view of Verstappen's driving as he was slapped with a 10-second sanction.

‘He ruined his own race as much as he ruined mine’ Speaking to Sky Sports F1 after the race, Norris admitted that he was “disappointed” and that he felt Verstappen was at fault for the collision. He said:

“I don’t know what to say. Disappointed. Nothing more than that, honestly. It was a good race, I looked forward to just a fair battle, a strong fair battle, but I wouldn’t say that’s what it was in the end. Tough one to take. It was a mistake-free race from my side, I feel like I did a good job, but got taken out of the race, so nothing more than that.”

“I mean as a rule, you’re not allowed to move, you’re not allowed to react to the driver and that’s what he did three times out of three. Two times I managed to avoid it, not going to run into him, not lock up and run into him, and the third time he just ran into me. I’m just trying to drive my race, he was clearly a lot slower at the end.”

‘Can’t be friends’ – Ted Kravitz sees two ‘significant developments’ in Verstappen v Norris rivalry
    01 Jul 2024
    Michelle Foster
    PlanetF1.com

Note the day, June 30th, as Ted Kravitz believes that was the “first day” of the end of the Max Verstappen and Lando Norris friendship. Good friends prior to Sunday’s 71-lap Austrian Grand Prix, they came to blows on lap 64 of the race as Norris tried to pass Verstappen around the outside of Turn 3. Ted Kravitz: Can two championship rivals ever be friends? No way.

But perhaps the most “significant development”, as Kravitz put it, will be the impact Sunday’s collision has on Norris and Verstappen’s friendship. Calling the clash a “significant development in the relationship” between Red Bull and McLaren, Kravitz continued in post-race Notebook: “And in the personal relationship between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen.

“Up until this point, they’ve been mates. They share nights out, they go to longer races on the same plane. So is this the end of a beautiful friendship between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris? Will there be no more trips to Ibiza? Will there be no more Martin Garrix concerts? Will there be no more respect?”

Coulthard: ‘Hell will freeze over’ before Verstappen apologizes.
Anyone expecting Max Verstappen to apologise to Lando Norris for his aggressive driving in the Austrian Grand Prix, as the McLaren driver suggested he should do, must not hold their breath insists F1 commentator David Coulthard.

    F1i.com

However, Coulthard believes an admission of wrongdoing by the three-time world champion is a long shot. “Hell freezing over, I think is the expression,” the former F1 driver told Britain’s Channel 4 when the prospect was put to him of Verstappen apologising to Norris for their contact.

“Max is going to go ‘I was racing – it’s hard racing.’ This is the first time Lando is experiencing going wheel to wheel really on a weekend in, weekend out basis. We know how it was when it was Lewis who was going wheel to wheel with Max. Max is one of the hardest racers, to beat him you’ve got to match him.”

“There was that contact as they enter the corner, further contact once they’ve gone through the apex, both of them with punctures and damage – avoidable incidents from both, it’s cost them both finishing the race,” the Scot explained.

‘Hell will freeze over’ before Max Verstappen issues Lando Norris apology, claims Coulthard
    01 Jul 2024
    Henry Valantine
    PlanetF1.com

Former McLaren and Red Bull driver David Coulthard said Max Verstappen is unlikely to apologise to Lando Norris for their collision in Austria on Sunday. “Hell freezing over, I think is the expression,” Coulthard said on Channel 4 when the prospect was put to him of Verstappen apologising to Norris for their contact.

“This will be the thing that Lando is complaining about, just at that final part of the entry to the corner, that Max is continuing to come over to the left and he’ll claim ‘he squeezed me and you’re not allowed to do that under braking.’ Look, he’s definitely crowded Lando across the track. If there was a barrier there, then they both would have sort of ricocheted off it.”

“I completely get Max will say ‘Well, hold on a minute, he could have gone further over the kerb’, but the stewards have looked at it, they’ve got more information, they’ve given a penalty to Max. Ultimately, it doesn’t make a difference to where he finished in the race.”

Last-minute surge in 2024 British GP ticket sales after Lando and Max F1 battle
    July 1st 2024
    Author: Dominic Tobin
    Motor Sport Magazine

The thrilling lead battle in Austria gave 2024 British Grand Prix ticket sales an immediate boost, with fans hoping for more drama at Silverstone this weekend and just a few hundred tickets remaining. The no-holds-barred duel between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen in Austria has prompted a last-minute surge in British Grand Prix ticket sales, with only a few hundred still available for this weekend at Silverstone.

Unlike at this point last year, the race is not yet sold out, but the prospect of further fireworks on Sunday brought an influx of orders on Sunday evening. Silverstone managing director Stuart Pringle spoke last month about how Verstappen’s recent dominance had made selling tickets more difficult, saying that repetitive, predictable results took the edge off the sport.

George Russell was positioned perfectly to take victory in Austria as Verstappen and Norris limped away from their collision, and Lewis Hamilton will have hope of adding to his tally of eight British Grand Prix wins. Silverstone told Motor Sport that the circuit had seen a surge of sales in the hours after the Austrian thriller and is now close to selling out.

‘Car is f*cked’ – Lando Norris and Max Verstappen’s unheard radio in Austrian GP clash
    01 Jul 2024
    Michelle Foster
    PlanetF1.com

Team radio for the final two laps clearly showed that tempers were raising with the two having previously accused the other of moving under braking, Norris saying that of Verstappen, or divebombing, as Verstappen said of Norris’ actions.
    Lap 63…
    Red Bull: Gap 0.6.
Norris: He has to give the position back. I was ahead at the apex.
Norris: He went off the track.
    Verstappen: Off again.
Red Bull: It’s not clever is it?
Verstappen: He just divebombed, that’s now how you overtake.

    Lap 64…
    Verstappen: Nice. Oh my God.
    Norris: The car is fucked.
McLaren: It’s just a puncture, box this lap, box this lap.
Red Bull: Box Max. Box. You’ve got a rear left puncture.

    Verstappen penalty…
Red Bull: Max, a heads up. You were given a 10-second penalty for that incident with Lando, in case you are quizzed about that.
Verstappen: Of course. Yeah, sure. That’s just ridiculous. He could just send it left or right, what does he want me to do?
Verstappen stood by his criticism of the penalty when he spoke with the media including PlanetF1.com after the race. “We’ll look back at it but 10 seconds seemed a bit severe for me at that point because it didn’t feel like it was like any anything kind of aggressive going on in that move,” he said.

Horner labels Verstappen’s penalty ‘harsh’ as he gives his take on 'frustrating' collision with Norris
    14:01 Mon, 01 Jul 2024
    Formula One - Official Site

Christian Horner has given his view on the dramatic late-race collision between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris in the Austrian Grand Prix, with the Red Bull boss arguing that the 10-second penalty handed to Verstappen was “harsh”.

Reflecting on the punishment handed out to Verstappen – who had earlier taken victory ahead of the McLaren pair of Oscar Piastri and Norris in Saturday’s Sprint – Horner expressed some frustration over the decision.

“He picked up a puncture, he got the penalty,” the Team Principal commented. “I thought the penalty was harsh but that’s racing sometimes. It’s frustrating, particularly here at this race, but that’s the way racing goes sometimes. We had an incredible win yesterday, we were controlling the race nicely but that’s Formula 1.”

Helmut Marko apportions blame in ‘unnecessarily fierce’ Verstappen v Norris clash
    01 Jul 2024
    Michelle Foster
    PlanetF1.com

“We lost the victory due to several factors,” Marko told ServusTV. “The fact that our pit stop went wrong, which put Lando in DRS range. We expected that the hard tyres would be the better choice, but that turned out to not be the case. The temperatures were lower than expected.”

“That meant Lando had new tyres in his last stint and we were on used. That was also a factor. Max also locked up after his pit stop in Turn 4. All that together made it difficult for us.”

Speaking specifically about Verstappen’s clash with Norris, Marko apportioned blame to both drivers but also accepted that Red Bull should’ve told Verstappen to let the Briton pass him given Norris was facing a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits.

Norris Verstappen drama 'happy days' for F1 – Sainz
Carlos Sainz finished on the podium after Max Verstappen and Lando Norris dropped out of the top three.

Carlos Sainz has declared Max Verstappen and Lando Norris' Austrian Grand Prix clash "happy days" for F1. The Ferrari driver was not involved in the battle for victory at the Red Bull Ring but was a direct beneficiary of the collision between the Red Bull and McLaren drivers as he was promoted from fifth to third behind race-winner George Russell and the second McLaren of Oscar Piastri.

Sainz was pleased to see a battle at the front and is hopeful Ferrari again can soon be amongst it, potentially in this weekend's British Grand Prix. "Happy days for Formula 1 that there's a bit of action up front and we're getting to see some nice battles," added Sainz.

Hulkenberg and Magnussen hail ‘amazing team performance’ as Haas score double points finish in Austria.
After starting from P9 on the grid, Hulkenberg fought forwards before winning a battle with Sergio Perez in the latter stages to take an impressive P6 result. Reflecting on an eventful afternoon after jumping out of the car, the German admitted it had been a “hell of a race”.

    Formula One - Official Site

Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen were left greatly encouraged by Haas’s performance in the Austrian Grand Prix, with the pair scoring a significant double points finish for the team in sixth and eighth respectively.

“Especially at the end, it got so intense, but I think it was intense at the front too with Max [Verstappen] and Lando [Norris]!” Hulkenberg said with a smile, referring to the dramatic collision between Verstappen and Norris on Lap 64 of 71 as they fought for the lead. “It was happening everywhere. It was touch and go, I was really pushing hard to keep Checo behind, but the last two laps my tyres were really done with it.”

‘I almost lost the car completely out of Turn 10 in a big way, went onto the gravel a bit and then had a big tank-slapper. Then he came by, but into [Turn] 3 I kind of let him edge in front so I could have DRS for the next straight, which obviously put me back in front. Then luckily it was [the] final lap because I would have not survived another lap!”

‘Elbows out’: Jolyon Palmer shares why he thinks Haas will score more points than Alpine this season
    Tue 2 July 2024 09:00
    Rory Mitchell
    F1 Oversteer

Haas produced an encouraging result with Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen during the Austrian Grand Prix after both finished inside the points. Hulkenberg fought from ninth on the grid up to sixth after a brief battle with Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, while Magnussen was eighth at the chequered flag.

Haas has produced several of its points-scoring finishes this year after teamwork between their drivers on track, notably during the Saudi Arabian and Miami Grands Prix weekends when Magnussen acted as a ‘rear gunner’ for Hulkenberg to prevent them from falling behind rivals. Former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer thinks this approach will make a difference for the American team when speaking on the F1 TV post-Austrian GP show.

The Alpine drivers have produced their fair share of on-track spats this year, most recently at Monaco where Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly collided on the opening lap, putting a potential points finish at risk. Ocon took to social media to apologise for the incident, while team principal Bruno Famin was livid with the incident when speaking to French media after the race. Palmer believes the difference in dynamics between the two teams will be a key difference in the battle for the Constructors’ positions at the end of the season.

Hulkenberg: Haas points haul in Austria one ‘hell of a race’

The German driver was clearly pumped up when all was said and done and couldn’t contain his excitement, admitting it had been a “hell of a race”. “Especially at the end, it got so intense, but I think it was intense at the front too with Max [Verstappen] and Lando [Norris]!” Hulkenberg said.

“But yeah, very happy. Double points for the team and in a big way, so didn’t expect that, obviously one car out or something but still, amazing team performance today and this weekend. I think it’s confirmed now that we’re midfield on all sorts of different tracks, we are competitive, we can fight everyone. That’s really great news and I’m very happy about that.”

Hulkenberg commended Haas for their steady improvements and effective updates, feeling optimistic about the team’s trajectory. “You’ve got to be there weekend-in weekend-out, consistency in a long season is key,” commented the future Audi driver. “Also this year we’ve obviously worked much better and efficiently in terms of bringing updates. We’ve steadily improved the car, that means we can keep up with the others.”

Ayao Komatsu: “I’m just so happy for everyone in the team. Sometimes we get unlucky but today our execution was amazing, Nico and Kevin drove well, and pit stops were good, everything was great. I’m speechless, I’m just so happy for everyone to get this result and for Nico to beat Perez on merit, that’s a huge statement.”

MoneyGram Haas F1 Team scored a double points finish with Nico Hulkenberg sixth, and Kevin Magnussen eighth, at the Austrian Grand Prix, Round 11 of the 2024 FIA Formula 1 World Championship, held Sunday at the Red Bull Ring.

Sixth and eighth marks MoneyGram Haas F1 Team’s strongest result of the year and lifts the team up to seventh place in the Constructors’ Championship, on 19 points. Up front, Mercedes AMG driver George Russell claimed victory, the second of his career, ahead of McLaren Racing’s Oscar Piastri, with Scuderia Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz third.

Hulkenberg held on to claim the position by half a second. He wasn’t close enough to Verstappen to gain advantage of the other Red Bull driver’s 10-second time penalty for causing a collision with Lando Norris. However, Hulkenberg described his run from ninth on the grid to sixth as a “hell of a race” for him and his team.

“Especially at the end, it got so intense,” he told the official F1 channel. “But I think it was intense at the front too with Max and Lando – so it was happening everywhere! It was touch and go. I was really pushing hard to keep Checo behind, but the last two laps, my tyres were kind of really done with it. I almost lost the car completely out of turn ten in a big way, went onto the gravel a bit and then had a big tank-slapper.”

“Into [turn] three, I let him edge in front, so I could have DRS for the next straight, which obviously put me back in front. Luckily it was the final lap, because I would have not survived another lap.” It was Hulkenberg’s fifth top ten finish over the first 11 rounds of the championship and his best result for Haas since joining them in 2023.

Explained: The ‘big hole’ that contributed to Sergio Perez finishing behind a Haas
    30 Jun 2024
    Henry Valantine
    PlanetF1.com

Sergio Perez explained that his Austrian Grand Prix felt like a “disaster”, after Christian Horner revealed there was a “big hole” in his sidepod that hindered his progress throughout the race. This damage left him lacking straight-line speed and unable to make in-roads, with the Red Bull driver crossing the line seventh at the chequered flag, behind the Haas of Nico Hulkenberg.

“Checo, I mean, again, it was a tricky race for him,” Horner said to media including PlanetF1.com after the race. “He had quite a significant contact on the first lap with Lando [Piastri, sic.]. He had quite a big hole in the sidepod and then the loss of straight-line speed that that gives you, it’s a bit like an air brake.”

“So that’s why he was struggling on straight-line speed. So [it was] difficult to judge Checo’s race due to the damage that he had.” When asked further about the scale of the damage and how much time he was losing in the race, Horner added: “I don’t have the exact numbers. All I know is he had lost a big hole, and it was being reported on the data that there was a significant loss because of it.”

Gasly says he ‘kept it clean’ during ‘intense’ battle with Ocon

    Phillip van Osten
    F1i.com

Last weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix saw another chapter in the ongoing saga of Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon's on-track battles in F1. Despite Alpine's established "rules of engagement," the teammates found themselves embroiled in yet another contentious fight although it was one that was relatively inconsequential for the Enstone squad.

As they reached the uphill corner, Ocon ran his teammate wide on the exit to reclaim the position, the pair just nearly avoiding a costly collision. "What was that? Why did he just push me off the track?" vented a surprised Gasly on the radio. The move also drew a big “Wow!” from Alonso who had a front seat to the commotion.

A few laps later, in a more sensible maneuver, Gasly pulled alongside Ocon again, taking the outside line at Turn 4 to gain the inside line for the next corner and secure 11th place. Gasly celebrated the successful pass with a simple "Ciao!" over the radio.

Alpine's mini-revival boosted by senior F1 tech arrivals
    Jul 1, 2024
    Scott Mitchell-Malm
    The Race

Alpine’s on-track mini-revival in Formula 1 should be further boosted by the arrival of more significant technical recruits that have now started at the team. Three senior figures began work at the team on July 1, arriving from Red Bull and Ferrari. Michael Broadhurst and Vin Dhanani return to Enstone as chief aerodynamicist and head of vehicle performance respectively.

Both join from Red Bull Racing having worked for this team in its previous guises - Broadhurst in the aerodynamics department across a seven-year stint, most recently as principal aerodynamicist in 2016 before joining McLaren, and Dhanani from 2006 to 2011 at the start of his F1 career.

Recruiting Broadhurst, formerly deputy head of aerodynamics at McLaren and principal aerodynamicist at Red Bull, targets Alpine’s aero deficiencies by adding significant experience and expertise to a key department. Likewise, Vin’s arrival from a major role as Red Bull’s vehicle performance team leader helps bolster another important area after losing head of performance Richard Frith to Williams.

One of the most recent Formula 1 drivers to confirm his future beyond the end of the 2024 season is Pierre Gasly. The Frenchman announced ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix that he would be staying at Alpine on the same day that Lance Stroll confirmed he would continue his association with Aston Martin.

Pierre Gasly shares what Alpine do ‘extremely well’ compared to Red Bull. Talking about his time with Red Bull, Gasly said: “I went through Toro Rosso, Red Bull, back, and then to Alpine. But not always with a strong dynamic.

“And from what I am seeing from the team and from my relationship with the team, with Luca de Meo, with Bruno [Famin], it is going extremely well, and we have clear ambitions. Briatore vows Alpine will win races in 2026 amid new F1 recruits
    2 July 2024
    Taylor Powling
    Motorsport Week

Alpine Executive Advisor Flavio Briatore has claimed the team will win races upon Formula 1’s rules reset in 2026 as it welcomes hires from several rival competitors. “In 2026 I will win races, the Alpine will be on the podium; then, how many we will be able to do, I don’t know,” Briatore told ‘La Politica nel pallone’ on Radio Rai.

“This year we have many handicaps, we are reshaping the whole team. I have had full powers from Luca de Meo. I am used to using them and I guarantee that in two seasons we will be talking about podiums”. Alpine is rumoured to be considering shutting down its engine division and reverting to being a customer team, with reports slating Briatore eyes Ferrari or Mercedes.

The seasoned Italian is also touted to be behind Alpine’s attempts to entice outgoing Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz to slot in alongside the renewed Pierre Gasly in 2025. “There is a lot of interest, we’ll see in the next few days, although right now for Alpine the driver doesn’t make a difference, we have to get the car right first,” he added. “Incredibly he [Sainz] is still free, we are all willing to have him in the team and we will do what we can.”

“I spoke to (Renault CEO) Luca de Meo on the phone for a long time”, Ecclestone, no longer officially involved in the sport, told Blick newspaper. “He was desperate”, said the 93-year-old. "Then the word Briatore came up.”

“We quickly agreed that in such a confusing situation only a doer - a bandit among angels - could help”, Ecclestone, a well known friend and long-time business partner of Briatore's, added. "There are enough saints in there already. Flavio's great strength has always been 'Keep the discussions short, do and think big. You don't need friends in Formula 1, you just need success',” he said.

Toto Wolff has addressed speculation of Mercedes potentially supplying Alpine with F1 engines from 2026, claiming the French outfit are “exploring all sorts of avenues”. According to The Race, Alpine are considering binning off their engine project for 2026 and thus would look to become a customer team.

Speaking about the Alpine rumours in a sit down interview with Sky F1, Wolff said: “Alpine, at the moment, is exploring all sorts of avenues. Their management is clearly not happy with their performances.

“But you know how it is in Formula 1 - it swings. Three races ago, Alpine had all the reasons to explore opportunities. But look at Barcelona and [Austria] and they look much better. So maybe overall it isn’t just the engine.”
