Alonso: a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time

Following a series of issues in Imola just a few days ago, Fernando Alonso endured another disaster in the qualifying session at the Monaco Grand Prix. Alonso looked to be back to his best after a disappointing time in Imola, and went into qualifying full of confidence. However, the Spaniard encountered traffic on his critical hot lap in Q1 which saw him fail to progress into the rest of the session.

“It was a case of wrong place and wrong moment today for me. This is Monaco and you need to find some luck here too! I lost quite a bit of lap time with the traffic in Q1 and there is nobody to blame as we can't expect the traffic to vanish. Heading into Qualifying, we were thinking Q3 looked possible. It will be a tough day tomorrow, but we will take any opportunities that come our way," commented Alonso.

Why Fernando Alonso spent '50 laps’ wrongly thinking he was on course for point in Monaco
Fernando Alonso explains why he wrongly thought he was on to score the final point in Monaco.
    28 May 2024
    Lewis Larkam
    Crash.Net

Fernando Alonso has admitted he “got confused” and spent “50 laps” of the F1 Monaco Grand Prix mistakenly believing that he was on course for a points finish.

"I got confused because when we [built the gap] and Lance was in front of me after the pitstops, they said, 'okay, we secured 10th.' We've been doing all this for that last point,” Alonso said. Then Lance had the puncture, I said, 'Oh, now I have all the responsibility in my shoulders with very old tyres to bring this point back home.' ”

“I was driving for 50 laps thinking that I was 10th. And then when I crossed the line and they told me P11, I said, 'Oh, so, uh, all that stress for nothing.' But anyway, it kept me alive.”

Alonso reveals bizarre misunderstanding over Monaco GP result
Fernando Alonso failed to bag a point-scoring finish at the Monaco Grand Prix last weekend as he crossed the finish line in P11.

    RacingNews365

Fernando Alonso has revealed he mistakingly thought he finished in P10 at the Monaco Grand Prix last weekend. The two-time world champion crossed the line in P11 as he endured a difficult weekend - starting with a rare Q1 elimination during qualifying.

During the grand prix, Alonso spent much of the race opening a gap for team-mate Lance Stroll to pit and retain position one spot ahead of Alonso. The Spaniard believed that this was for the final position in the points, which he thought he inherited after Stroll pitted again for a puncture later in the race.

The 43-year-old voiced confusion over the restart order after the red flag period that was deployed following a crash for a trio of cars. "I don't know [why the situation occurred]. When the red flag came out, Lance was P10, I was P12,” he pointed out. And then at one point they reinstated Sainz in P3, so we were 12th and 14th, we should be 13th and 14th, but Lance was in front of Daniel [which] he was not supposed to be. So I don't know in which position I started, and I don't know in which position I was driving."

Alonso concerned Aston Martin are ‘back in the midfield’ after team fail to score in Monaco
    28 May 2024
    Formula One - Official Site

“It was a tough race, unlucky again – the whole weekend it seemed like we were in the wrong moment always," said Alonso. "It was no different in the race, started on the hard tyre to go very long and then with the red flag we had to fit the medium and go to the end on the medium, which was a little bit unexpected.”

“All in all difficult weekend, obviously you learn a lot from the difficulties so that’s what we try to do but tough one… [It’s] obviously not ideal, the current form, we seem to go back to the midfield instead of looking at the front runners.”

“But these things can change quickly, we saw with many other examples how quickly things can change, a good upgrade on the car and you can move five or six positions, so that is what we want to do on the next one and we work hard on that direction.”

Fernando Alonso labels recent Aston Martin struggles “a big wake-up call”
Fernando Alonso reflects on two difficult weekends for Aston Martin.

Fernando Alonso has labelled the last two F1 races for Aston Martin as “a big wake-up call” after slipping back in the pecking order. Even though Aston Martin continue to bring significant upgrades to their car, they have picked up just four points in the last three races.

“These weekends have been crucial to understand our weaknesses, to understand the car, to improve,” Alonso told DAZN. “You always learn more from the difficulties than from the victories, because the problems go over the top with the euphoria.

“We are learning a lot and looking ahead to the rest of the year, 2025 and 2026. These two races have been a big wake-up call for the team and it will be very good for us.”

Aston Martin no longer a top-5 F1 team says Alonso
Aston Martin has fallen outside the top five teams in Formula 1, Fernando Alonso has declared.
    MAY 28, 2024
    GrandPrix.com

Alonso admits that, at least in relative terms compared to last season, Aston Martin has taken a notable step backwards. “Last season here we finished second”, he said in Monaco, "then in Canada we also had strong pace. This year the sensations are different, with some doubts because we were not able to go fast.”

"We have to try to change this trend now, but it will take a few races until we introduce a significant improvement. Better and worse days are coming, and we have to stay united. But looking at the results, we are no longer in the top five group. But that is more of a question for Mike (Krack)”, Alonso concluded, referring to his team boss.

Fernando Alonso has described the Emilia Romagna and Monaco grands prix as a “big wake-up call” for Aston Martin, admitting it will require “a few races” to reverse the team’s downward F1 2024 trend.

And speaking to DAZN F1 Spain after the race in Monaco, Alonso acknowledged the last few weeks have served as a jolt for Aston Martin – but has backed the team to benefit from it over the long term.

He said: “These weekends have been crucial to understand our weaknesses, to understand the car, to improve. You always learn more from the difficulties than from the victories, because the problems go over the top with the euphoria.”

Delivering his post-race impressions, Alonso added: "We were a little bit unlucky at the beginning of the race. It didn't work but generally it was a disappointing weekend. We need to get better for Canada."

Alonso endorses long-forgotten Monaco qualifying solution.
Maybe this is an idea that should be revisited. Fernando Alonso would like to see it happen.
    26 May 2024
    Ian Parkes
    RacingNews365

The two-time F1 champion feels F1 should adopt the system in place in F2 and F3 for the principality circuit, and run two groups to ensure a clean lap is possible. It is a suggestion that has been aired previously but never adopted. Alonso said: "That would be great. Monaco is so exciting, so thrilling that lap, so it would be nice to see everyone's lap live because we miss a lot of great moments, but it is the way it is."

"With Monaco, you can get lucky or unlucky. Last year I got lucky. I made some progress in Q1, Q2, and then in Q3 you are P2, and some of the big contenders were out in Q1 or Q2. This time it was us on the bad side of it [luck], and Checo [Sergio Perez] as well, he is P18. This is Monaco, you need to find your luck as well and we didn't do that."

Ricciardo frustrated by inconsistent qualifying form
Daniel Ricciardo has admitted that his qualifying inconsistency has left him frustrated as he tries to understand where he's going wrong.

“I definitely felt good coming into the session, coming into the day,” Ricciardo said of his Saturday performance. “Obviously two years ago here I really struggled with McLaren. I felt a lot better this time around, but look, the reality is the result isn't really that much better.”

“I don't want to just be like ‘hey, tyres, this and that'. I want to try and take a good look at myself and see what I'm missing. Then we'll look at what the car can give me to help me out, because I think the frustrating thing is I can do it, but it's obviously not happening frequently enough. That's where I'm kind of getting frustrated with myself, just trying to understand why it's not consistently, week-in, week-out being a Q3 contender.”

Daniel Ricciardo admits that he needs to find a solution to his persistent qualifying woes and understand the root cause for his frustrating lack of consistency.

Ricciardo's struggles in the opening stretch of the 2024 season have been a talking point in the paddock, with disappointing results fueling speculation that the eight-time Grand Prix winner’s seat at RB could be at risk.

Those worries were perhaps exaggerated but there’s no denying that the Aussie’s results – especially on Saturdays – are falling short of his and his RB team’s expectations.

'I'm not happy': Daniel Ricciardo's blunt admission over gap to RB teammate Yuki Tsunoda

Daniel Ricciardo insists his focus is on his "week in, week out" struggles, as opposed to whether or not he'll be on the F1 grid next season.

Speculation surrounding the Aussie's future on the grid has been rampant for much of May, with some suggesting he could lose his seat to Kiwi reserve driver Liam Lawson, perhaps even before the end of the season.

His RB team's chief executive Peter Bayer has thrown his support behind Ricciardo, saying ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix he was happy with the team's lineup, and rubbished any talk of a mid-season shuffle.

"I think, like today, maybe we do find something that, okay, that's why I lost a bit here or there. But there will probably always be something, this is F1, and it's never perfect. Daniel Ricciardo reveals RB message after fearing team would ‘panic’ over slow F1 2024 start

    PlanetF1.com

Daniel Ricciardo has revealed how his bad experience at McLaren helped him recover from a slow start to the F1 2024 season, admitting he feared the RB team “would starting panicking” after a challenging first few races.

Asked if his previous struggles had helped him deal with his patchy form in early F1 2024, Ricciardo told Speed City Broadcasting: “Definitely. Because I’ve been through that – with hindsight and all of that, and I look back at some of the McLaren times – that’s why having some some time off last year was so important.”

“There were things I was telling myself: ‘If I get back into F1, if I get a seat again, make sure I remember these things, I learn from all this stuff and don’t fall back down some of these traps.’ That was my fear with the first few races this year. I felt good, I felt confident, I felt completely fine, I wasn’t second guessing myself.”

F1 2024: Daniel Ricciardo fears amid fresh rumour over Red Bull decision

    Fox Sports (Australia)

Daniel Ricciardo is not a “real alternative” to replace Sergio Perez at Red Bull, according to a new report. The Australian has failed to put pressure on Perez’s seat having been largely dominated by his Visa Cash App RB teammate Yuki Tsunoda this year.

Reports emerged last week Red Bull was deep in negotiations with Perez about a contract extension — a revelation that dashed Ricciardo’s hopes of a promotion to the senior Red Bull outfit in 2025.

Now, according to German F1 site Motorsport Total, there are rumours that Tsunoda and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz were seen as more realistic options to partner Max Verstappen than Ricciardo — if Red Bull axed its Mexican driver.

RB set to retain current line-up for 2025

RB team boss, Peter Bayer admits that the Faenza-based outfit is likely to retain Daniel Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda for 2025. "We're very happy with both of our drivers," he said. "And honestly, we're not wasting time with discussing ifs and whens. We have a very strong line-up. We have a great reserve driver. We have great talent coming through F2, F3.

"Currently, it's all about focusing on performance," he added. "And perhaps the focus is more on Aston Martin in front of us than on driver discussions."

"But as I said before, currently we have two drivers in the cars. We are finding performance with the two. And we really do not discuss the 2025 situation, perhaps because we're in a luxury situation of having that strong grassroot pyramid behind us. And so the focus is really on track and on the next couple of races until definitely the summer break."

His contract expires at the end of this year, so the question is where we will see Bottas driving in 2025. He talks about it at length in an exclusive interview with RacingNews365, ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix. "I think everything is still open. At the moment no door is closed yet," Bottas replied when asked if a contract extension at Stake F1, which will continue as Audi's factory team in 2026, is an option for him.”

"Some teams have already fixed it, but apart from that it is still an open situation. Audi has made it clear they are not rushing things, but at the same time it means I have to look at other options. We're aware of the situation and that's what we're doing now. And that's why this gentleman is hanging around here," Bottas said with a smile on his face. With that, he is referring as a matter of course to his manager.

Valtteri Bottas discusses his 2025 options and retirement plans
Competing in his 12th year in Formula One, Valtteri Bottas has secured 10 wins and 67 podiums during his time at Williams, Mercedes, and now Sauber. But what does the future hold for the 34-year-old?
    May 31, 2024
    Rhiannon Temporal
    FormulaNerds

During the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, talk surrounding the driver market started to heat up again. This time the speculation surrounded Carlos Sainz and a potential move to Williams for 2025. Sainz, who has connections with Audi through his father, was heavily believed to be joining the current Sauber team before it transforms into Audi.

The height of the ‘Sainz to Sauber/Audi’ rumours was in April. During that time, the current driver line-up of Zhou Guanyu and Valtteri Bottas was said to be under threat. The team confirmed this by signing current Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg for next year. But where does this leave Zhou and Bottas?

In the build-up to the Monaco Grand Prix, Bottas discussed his prospects with RacingNews365. The Finnish driver was asked about 2025, and if he will remain with Sauber, with his contract ending this season.

At Stake F1, Bottas has been unable to get anywhere near the points this season. The 34-year-old Finn himself also recognises that it has been a difficult start to the year for him and his team, but remains positive nonetheless. "It has been a difficult start, in which unfortunately we have not been able to score yet," Bottas told RacingNews365 in an exclusive interview in Monaco. "But we still have a long way to go and the differences are small.”

"I think we will see a different ranking on each track, sometimes in our favor and sometimes not. So we're not giving up yet, because we also know that we still have something in the pipeline." Though it looks more and more like Stake F1 has had to take a pass in the development battle against the competition, could Bottas' experience finally be the deciding factor in steering the team in the right direction?

According to Bottas himself, yes. "You always have influence, there is no doubt about that. But both drivers have that. But especially the more advanced simulation technologies and the wind tunnel play a bigger role in the overall performance. In the search for tuning and balance of the car, the driver has more influence. We have good people in-house who manage the mechanical side. That's going to make a difference."

Valtteri Bottas the favourite to make Williams move
    May 31, 2024

    Last Word On Sports

Valtteri Bottas is on an expiring contract with Sauber, but his next F1 chapter will likely be elsewhere. Williams emerges as a likely destination for Valtteri Bottas. In recent months, it has become increasingly clear that Williams are active in the market. All indicators suggest that Logan Sargeant is not in the team’s future plans. Unless there is a dramatic change of heart at Grove, the American driver’s days at Grove are numbered.

James Vowles and Valtteri Bottas are understood to have held talks on multiple occasions, as reported by formu1a.uno. Only a few weeks ago, the Williams team principal hinted that news on his 2025 driver lineup is not far away. This only confirms the growing consensus that Bottas is a front-runner to become Alex Albon’s next teammate. Inevitably, other drivers, including Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz, have been on the Williams shortlist.

However, Bottas remains the most realistic option for the team. The Finn’s priority to secure a multi-year contract is congruent with James Vowles’ hopes for continuity in his driver pairing for 2025 and 2026. Although there is still some distance to go, the 34-year-old could return to the team he began his career with.

Valtteri Bottas edges closer to Williams return: Announcement before Canada?
Is Valtteri Bottas returning to Williams in 2025?
    21 May 2024
    Connor McDonagh
    Crash.Net

Valtteri Bottas could be set to make a sensational return to Williams alongside Alex Albon in 2025. According to Speedcafe and Finnish publication VSabladet, Bottas has been heavily linked with a switch to Williams. Bottas’ remarkable return to Williams could be announced next month according to the aforementioned reports, as early as the Canadian Grand Prix.

The move would benefit both sides, giving Williams a dependable, quick, midfield driver. In Bottas and Albon, Williams would have one of the better driver pairings on the grid in a very competitive midfield pack. The 10-time race winner was pictured in the Williams motorhome during the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix weekend.

Addressing his visit to Williams at Imola, Bottas said: [It was] normal things, about life! “Of course, when you’re on the free market, you want to check around what’s out there. It’s a pretty normal situation being [when] you’re on the free market.”

‘Thank God for Lance Stroll!’ – Christian Horner’s view on Monaco Grand Prix concerns.

After the opening lap drama at the Monte Carlo street circuit, which saw Sergio Perez eliminated after crashing with the Haas of Kevin Magnussen, the race was restarted at on lap 3 with Red Bull’s sole remaining driver, Max Verstappen, lining up P6.

Further back, though, there was one driver who pulled off an overtake, actually more than one, and that was Lance Stroll who pitted only to then suffer a puncture and fall to the very back of the field. The Aston Martin driver, bolting on a set of soft tyres, overtook Zhou Guanyu and then Logan Sargeant.

And that ladies and gentlemen was the overtaking highlights of the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix summed up, two passes. “I think it’s something that we should collectively have a look at,” Horner told the media including PlanetF1.com. “Thank God for Lance Stroll, the only guy that managed to overtake in the race.”

Stroll declares Aston Martin intention after future speculation
Lance Stroll has been part of the Aston Martin project since his father bought the team when known as Force India.

Lance Stroll has stated that he is "committed" to remaining with Aston Martin and the project the team recently embarked on, following speculation about his future earlier in the season. With the Canadian driver's father, Lawrence Stroll, having owned the team since August 2018, it has long been assumed that Stroll's seat will always be safe on a sort of rolling contract.

Despite the speculation over his future, Stroll has insisted that he remains as committed to F1 and Aston Martin's project as ever before. "For sure, I'm committed to this whole project," stressed Stroll. "Like I said, how we've gone from a team that had 350-400 people in 2018, 2019.”

"Now we're pushing the number of 1000 people and looks very different in Silverstone now than 18 months ago. So, yes, I'm definitely committed and excited to be a part of this project."

Stroll insists on 'commitment' to Aston despite performance shortfall

Lance Stroll insists he remains committed to Aston Martin’s F1 project despite the speculation surrounding the Canadian’s future amid his lacklustre tenure with his father’s outfit. “It’s amazing to see how far we’ve come as a team for the last five years. We’ve grown so much as a team since we were in pink colours.”

“We have a very exciting wind tunnel that’s being built, we have an incredible facility that’s now in Silverstone that we moved into last year, so there’s a lot of pieces of this puzzle that are really coming together,” he explained.

“Along with the talented people that have been in service for many years, a lot of new talented people have joined and are joining, which makes this project very exciting. So, in my mind, you know, definitely here for the future. That’s where my head’s at.”

Sargeant reckons Williams should have split strategies in Monaco.
Logan Sargeant came home in P15 in Monaco after a tough race, and was left wondering what might have been had he run a different strategy to team mate Alex Albon.

‘Obviously’:Alex Albon concerned with Williams issue that ‘cost’ Logan Sargeant at Monaco GP
    Thu 30 May 2024 13:00
    Kyle Archer
    F1 Oversteer

Alex Albon has admitted that he is concerned with one issue at Williams which ‘cost’ teammate Logan Sargeant heavily at the Monaco GP after finishing it two laps down.

Williams are still working to get enough parts ready to afford Sargeant their latest upgrades. But the American will likely have to wait for the Spanish GP from June 21-23 to enjoy parity on parts with Albon, who also concedes Sargeant is unlikely to get them at the Canadian GP. “Yeah, it is [a concern],” Albon added regarding Sergeant running an alternative set-up. “It’s something that we want. The good thing is we will have one ready for Barcelona.”

Sargeant ended qualifying for the 2024 Monaco GP with a 0.133s deficit to Esteban Ocon of Alpine. But a margin of only 0.001s to Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso would have still denied the Fort Lauderdale native a Q2 appearance had just one more driver lapped slower. One factor that serves to heighten Albon and Williams’ frustrations that Sargeant did not get into Q2 was that the stewards disqualified Haas pair Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg from qualifying. They both made Q2 but Haas failed to ensure their new rear wing was legal.

Logan Sargeant has punchy response when asked about points failure
Williams picked up their first points of the season in Monaco as Alex Albon finished P9, but Logan Sargeant is still struggling in his second year with the team
    14:37, Thu, May 30, 2024
    By Matthew Abbott

Alex Albon is again benefiting from new parts before Williams teammate Logan Sargeant this season. Sargeant highlighted the struggle when speaking after the race. "It was a tricky race and looking at a rear wing was pretty much my day," he said. "It was uneventful for the most part; I was stuck underneath Fernando (Alonso) and Danny (Ricciardo) for a long time, and it just started to eat away at the tyres, and I really had nothing left. The rears completely degraded and from there I was hanging on to the tyres. Once I put the new tyre on and got some clear air, I felt good."

Sargeant continued: "Alex getting points is a boost for the team and shows a bit of what is to come. Going forward, when both cars have the same spec, we’ll both be able to fight for these opportunities more." Alex Albon also conceded that Sargeant not having access to the updated parts hurt his chances. “Obviously it cost him today,” Albon acknowledged regarding the parts. “It would have made a difference. I don’t know how far off he was from Q2, but it wouldn’t have been much. It would have been most likely in Q2 (with the new parts)."

Formula 1: Possible Logan Sargeant replacement emerges, and it's not Kimi Antonelli
With the driver market for the 2025 Formula 1 season thinning out, Williams are on the hunt for Alex Albon's next teammate. A familiar name is in the running.
    May 22, 2024

    Beyond the Flag (Weblog)

Williams only have one seat secured for next season after Alex Albon recently signed a multi-year contract extension to remain with the team. But Logan Sargeant will likely be on his way out after a disappointing two-year run.

Many in the Formula 1 world are curious as to who will fill the American's seat for next season, with the hot rumor being that current Formula 2 driver Andrea "Kimi" Antonelli is the likely replacement. However, the Italian is only set to turn 18 years old in August, so it may be too early for him to make the massive jump to Formula 1.

During the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix weekend at Imola Circuit, Sauber driver Valtteri Bottas was seen visiting the Williams motorhome. Bottas is said to have had a meeting with Williams team principal James Vowles, the context of which is unknown.

Logan Sargeant could be replaced mid-season at Williams by ‘tremendous’ ex-F1 driver
    Wed 29 May 2024 16:00
    David Comerford
    F1 Oversteer

Logan Sargeant is fighting for his future at Williams – and not just for 2025. It’s unclear at this stage whether he’ll even be able to see out the season. James Vowles told the American in the winter that he had to be the biggest ‘surprise’ of the year if he wanted to keep his seat. This was after a rookie campaign in which he scored one point to Alex Albon’s 27.

The problem for Sargeant is that he’s still struggling to reach the level of his teammate. He hasn’t beaten him in any Grand Prix qualifying session this year, nor has he had the edge in any of the races that both have finished. As he tries to drag the team up the field, Vowles may feel hamstrung by the 23-year-old’s struggles. As such, he’s already begun looking into replacements.

Williams have enquired about fielding Mercedes junior Kimi Antonelli in an FP1 session prior to his 18th birthday in late August. This would give them the chance to assess him before potentially handing him a drive in the second half of the season, at the expense of Sargeant. Mick Schumacher could also replace Logan Sargeant. But Antonelli isn’t the only contender if Williams decide to make a change midway through the campaign. According to Speedcafe, Mick Schumacher has also been ‘flagged’ as a potential replacement.

Zhou actively evaluating ‘different options’ for 2025.
Sauber’s Zhou Guanyu says his management team and himself are monitoring “different options” for 2025 to see which opportunity presents the best fit for his long-term goals in Formula 1.

“We’re monitoring all these different options,” commented Zhou last weekend in Monaco, quoted by Motorsport Week.

“Of course, here [at Sauber] remains still one of the options, but also, I’m looking at what’s the best for my future. It’s very important already to start quite early, just because of the driver market as well. I’ll leave this to Graeme obviously, but I’m doing my job here.”

“But it is clear that we’re already started talking to several different teams to understand who has the best interests and who has the future or the things that I wanted to have for the next few years. Things are not decided right now, but we’re just waiting to see what is the best on paper.”

Kick Sauber hoping Monaco was ‘an outlier’ as they leave race as the only team yet to score in 2024
    28 May 2024
    Formula One - Official Site

It proved to be a challenging weekend at the Monaco Grand Prix for Kick Sauber, with the team now the only outfit on the grid yet to score a point in 2024 as their struggles to get off the mark continue. Zhou faced a tough day, which started by having a close view of the heavy collision between Sergio Perez, Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg on the first lap of the race, an incident that all three fortunately emerged unharmed from. After making a late pit stop, the Chinese driver went on to end the race in 16th and last place.

“That was a pretty sketchy moment for these three [drivers],” Zhou commented about the Lap 1 crash. “I’m glad they are okay. From my side it was a very boring race, to be honest. I think we had a pretty good strategy until the red flag and then everybody is in the same boat, and there’s no potential to be overtaking. We tried to go to the end, and the tyre was dead for me unfortunately with 15 laps to go, so we had to commit to another stop.”

“It’s definitely one of the toughest [it’s] ever been, in terms of just lack of pace in general,” the 24-year-old added. “Monaco is all about confidence and this weekend I’ve been searching for that, and didn’t really have [much]. The race craft looks better, we still just need to work on it. We’re still lacking on pace against the guys around us, so we need to keep working on it.”

Sauber's performance now embarrassing says Benoit
Sauber's performance crisis is becoming so severe that it's "embarrassing", according to highly respected veteran journalist Roger Benoit.
    MAY 26, 2024
    GrandPrix.com

Benoit, earlier critical of how long it took Sauber to fix its technical issues this season leading to excruciatingly-long pitstops, wrote in his latest Blick column from Monaco: “It couldn't be more embarrassing. The red flag was waved twice in the Monaco practice sessions”, he added, "both after a Sauber crash.”

Benoit points the finger at three key players at Sauber. “Bottas and (Guanyu) Zhou, accompanied by the endless fairy tales of team representative (Alessandro) Alunni Bravi, should not even be a topic for the diligent cleaning crew in the Hinwil factory halls for 2025”, he charged.

“Nico Hulkenberg is coming back to Hinwil”, he said. "And if Carlos Sainz does not come, which would not be smart despite the lack of results, Yuki Tsunoda will be in pole position for the other seat. He is having a sensational season with Racing Bulls Honda, already scoring 15 points.”

Perez likely to remain with Red Bull.
Despite a recent drop in form, it is believed that Sergio Perez is favourite to partner Max Verstappen at Red Bull in 2025.
    30/05/2024
    NEWS STORY
    Pitpass

Perez started the season well, but over the last couple of race weekends his form has dipped, then came the nightmare of Monaco where he qualified 18th and was eliminated in the first lap clash with Kevin Magnussen. A further complication, as Red Bull looks ahead to 2026, is Verstappen's admitted concern over the Austrian team's power unit, leading to fears that the Horner-saga isn't the only aspect weighing on his mind. Clearly wanting to play it safe, as far as Perez is concerned, Christian Horner is looking to keep all his options open.

"This weekend's been pretty brutal for him," said Horner on Sunday. "Obviously we need to make sure that we have got both cars up there scoring points, because we cannot dismiss the threat of Ferrari and McLaren in both championships. Checo's first six races, he was very strong," he continued, "qualifying on the front row and finishing second and third and scoring very well. We just need to get back into that position of confidence and not to see a dip."

Asked if the recent dip in form had led to the team stalling on a decision, Horner said: "Not really. I think that it's more our timing. We'll make a decision in the fullness of time." Helmut Marko added "I think by Barcelona we should have a clear picture", according to Motorsport.com. "I would say we should have a clear idea ourselves by then." Asked if Perez is on pole position for the seat, the Austrian replied: "He is in a good position. I wouldn't say pole-position, but he is in a good position."

Why Perez staying at Red Bull is not key to paying Verstappen's salary
Ralf Schumacher recently caused quite a stir with a remarkable claim about the reason why Sergio Perez is likely staying at Red Bull - but he appears to be wide of the mark.

    RacingNews365

It was Ralf Schumacher who recently suggested that Red Bull retaining Sergio Perez was key to the team being able to afford Max Verstappen's extraordinary salary. Multiple F1 grand prix winner Schumacher claimed that Red Bull needs the sponsorship money Perez brings with him to offset the three-time champion's reputed $55 million-per-year deal.

Speaking to Formel1, Schumacher said: "As long as Verstappen stays with Red Bull - and that's what I've heard at least once - Red Bull is struggling with a tight budget limit, and Perez brings money with him."

If Schumacher is talking about the overall budget limit in F1, in recent years teams have needed less money to survive in the sport following the arrival of the cost cap. Each team is allowed to spend a maximum of $135m, regardless of sponsorship income.

Report: Sergio Perez might only miss out on 2025 Red Bull seat for one reason

    F1 Oversteer

An 8th-place finish and a first-lap DNF aren’t typically the results associated with earning a new contract in Formula 1. Sergio Perez knew heading into the 2024 season that he was in possession of the most enticing seat in Formula 1 and his deal was expiring at the end of the campaign. It appears as though Perez only scoring four points in the last two races has had little impact on Red Bull’s attitude towards offering him a new deal.

He’s widely expected to be Max Verstappen’s teammate next year, according to The Race and other outlets, with Carlos Sainz told that he’s no longer being considered for the role. The report from ESPN suggests that Perez is still Red Bull’s first choice to partner Max Verstappen next year despite his recent displays. However, they’ve been told by ‘multiple sources’ that only a ‘drastic drop’ in his form over the next few races could change that situation.

This suggests that even though discussions between Red Bull and Perez appear to have taken a step forward, announcing his new deal doesn’t seem to be on the horizon. Red Bull are in a position of power right now knowing that if Perez’s form does fall away, they know that plenty of other drivers would drop everything to join the team.

Perez close to new Red Bull deal but team wants better results

Sergio Perez is reportedly close to being re-signed by Red Bull for 2025, with a deal potentially being announced ahead of next month’s Canadian Grand Prix. Perez’s underperformance has triggered an alarm bell at Red Bull which has significantly underscored Ferrari and McLaren in the recent period.

“This weekend’s been pretty brutal for him," commented team boss Christian Horner after last weekend’s bust in Monte Carlo. "Obviously we need to make sure that we’ve got both cars up there scoring points because we cannot dismiss the threat of Ferrari and McLaren in both championships."

Horner also contended that last weekend’s events would not impact Red Bull’s decision regarding Perez’s future. “I think that it’s more on our timing,” he said. “We’ll make a decision in the fullness of time.”

Marko told Osterreich newspaper that a decision regarding Perez will be taken “soon”, taking into consideration how Ferrari and McLaren have dramatically closed the gap. “We are now in the third year of the current regulations, and the others are copying us - some are copying better, and you see the result now at McLaren”, he said.

But Ferrari has also constantly developed. Marko admits, however, that Perez was not totally to blame for his poor Monaco GP weekend. “Our two drivers came to Monte Carlo enthusiastically, saying the car handled the kerbs really well in the simulator”, he said. “But as soon as they were in the car, they said 'undriveable!'.”

Perez lucky to escape unscathed after spectacular Monaco crash

Sergio Perez escaped with just a graze on his elbow after his dramatic crash on the opening lap of Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix. The Mexican crashed with Haas’ Kevin Magnussen on the run up the hill after the first corner, destroying his Red Bull Racing car and eliminating both Haas cars, with Nico Hulkenberg an innocent victim of the accident.

While the stewards did not carry out any further investigation into the crash, deeming both Perez and Magnussen equally at fault, the Red Bull man said he was frustrated with the outcome and felt the Dane should shoulder the brunt of the responsibility.

He said: “At the start I lost a position to one of the Haas cars and I was coming out of turn one, I couldn’t see Kevin in my mirrors, you can see that from my on board and then the crash happened. I think the move was unnecessary, we sustained a lot of damage and it was a very dangerous incident. How Kevin Magnussen Might Have Ended Red Bull’s Dominance

    Last Word On Sports

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and the Haas of Kevin Magnussen collided on the first lap of the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix, bringing out a very early red flag. Perez who had started the race in P16 following a shocking Q1 exit would have a long and difficult race ahead of him, but it was instead cut short.

According to reports, only the survival cell remained as a result of the RB20 bouncing between the barriers. Speaking to Motorsport-Magazin.com, Helmurt Marko said that the collision will cost Red Bull between $2.5 million and $3 million, with the damage having potentially affected the gearbox and power unit as well. Due to the cost cap, the budget for the 2024 Formula 1 season sits at $135 million, Marko said it would affect the team in terms of upgrades.

The damage costs are worth roughly 25% of Red Bull’s 2024 development budget. With such high figures, it has also been reported that if are to Red Bull suffer any further damage costs the Milton Keynes-based team may be forced to postpone or even abandon their late-season upgrades.

Hulkenberg: The two-tenths shortfall that led to the 'shittiest' disaster.
Nico Hulkenberg came oh so close to avoiding being the incident victim in the carnage that unfolded between Haas team-mate Kevin Magnussen and Red Bull's Sergio Perez.

    Ian Parkes
    RacingNews365

Offering his view of the accident, speaking to media, including RacingNews365, Hulkenberg said: "I saw them racing up the hill, and then I saw a very sharp, narrow gap. I saw that Kevin stayed, and then Checo also didn't move. I think [it was] unnecessary from both really. It could have been easily avoided.”

"For me, who wasn't directly involved, it's the shittiest of all. I missed it [avoiding being hit] by probably two-tenths. If I'd have been two-tenths further up the road, he [Perez] would have missed me. But as it was, he hit me with a small margin of his car, but enough to end my race as well."

Asked whether he understood why Magnussen went for the gap, he replied: "Yeah, of course, but nobody has won the Monaco Grand Prix on lap one! "You have to take a calculated risk, a risk that makes sense, and it's always that risk-reward question you have to ask yourself. To some extent, it is definitely a racing incident, lap one, street circuit, narrow, visibility poor, with drivers not always exactly knowing where the other car is, and these things happen unfortunately."

Sainz and Hulkenberg avoid penalties for impeding rivals

    Written by Keith Collantine
    RaceFans.net

In Hulkenberg’s case, the stewards took into account radio problems which disrupted the communications between the teams and their drivers. They also ruled Esteban Ocon was not significantly delayed when he caught the Haas at Massenet. “The team had attempted to warn car 27 [Hulkenberg] of the arrival of car 31 [Ocon] on a fast lap but the radio communication system was not working reliably and the driver of car 27 did not receive the messages. We heard the radio messages from the team to the driver but it appears that those messages did not go through to the car.”

“Given that the team had attempted to warn their driver appropriately of the arrival of car 31; in the light of the technical issues with the radio communications; and the fact that the driver of car 31 said that he was not materially impacted, we took no further action.” The decision to clear Hulkenberg is moot, as he has been disqualified from the qualifying results due to a technical infringement. He will start from the pit lane while Sainz retains his third place on the grid.

Kick Sauber offer update on who could partner new signing Hulkenberg for 2025

Alessandro Alunni Bravi has insisted that Kick Sauber “have the time” at their disposal to ponder “the very best options” for the second half of their 2025 line-up, after moving early to secure Nico Hulkenberg’s services. Hulkenberg will make the move from Haas to Hinwil next year, ahead of German automotive giants Audi taking over Kick Sauber’s entry for the arrival of new power unit and aerodynamic regulations in 2026.

“We have anticipated a bit the market by signing Nico Hulkenberg, who is a really strong addition to our team, and fits properly into the long-term project of Audi in F1. Now we have the time to assess the very best options available.” Alunni Bravi added that Kick Sauber’s decision also depends on what other teams choose to do, with McLaren and Ferrari the only outfits to formally confirm their full 2025 line-ups.

Logan Sargeant: I now have everything I need for F1 success.
Despite a difficult start to his F1 career and internal and external noise over his future at Williams, Logan Sargeant believes he's set up to achieve success in the sport.

Even by the standards of a driver fighting for his Formula 1 future, Logan Sargeant has had some tough breaks in 2024. The constant external noise questioning if and by whom he’ll be replaced is part of the package, alongside the confirmation of Williams and James Vowles sounding out the availability of rival drivers.

But running last season’s rear wing plus an old floor at the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix was perhaps less standard, not to mention missing out on an entire race thanks to his teammate’s crash in Australia. So it’s that much more impressive that Sargeant showed such a clear sense of perspective when speaking to Total-Motorsport.com ahead of that Monaco weekend:

“There’s always pressure, right? At the end of the day that’s the world we live in. But you know, it’s sporting pressure, there’s a lot more difficult things in life than driving a race car. I just feel privileged to be able to do this every weekend, I come into every weekend doing everything I can to perform and do the best I can for my team. I think about what can I do better throughout an entire weekend and my mind is occupied with trying to extract performance.”

Sargeant is sure he could also score points with the same spec as Albon

Williams driver Logan Sargeant is sure that he will be able to score points in 2024 as soon as he receives the same-specification of FW46 as his team-mate Alexander Albon races. "Alex getting points is a boost for the team and shows a bit of what is to come. Going forward, when both cars have the same spec, we’ll both be able to fight for these opportunities more."

His team-mate Logan Sargeant is still pointless in the 2024 season, but hopes that he can turn it around. The Miami-born regularly receives upgrades only after his team-mate which means that Williams often run two different specifications of cars. Sargeant is sure that he will be able to fight for points as soon as he receives the recent developments.

Sargeant admits fighting for Williams seat
Logan Sargeant admits he is fighting to retain his Williams race seat.

The struggling American is well aware speculation about his potential successor for 2025 is intensifying - with race winners like Valtteri Bottas and even Carlos Sainz in the mix. It's a much less comfortable waiting period for 23-year-old Sargeant.

“Of course I want to stay at Williams”, he insisted in Monaco. “I believe I can reach the level I need to be at, so that's what I'm trying to do.” One of his issues, he explains, is that his car specification is often a step or two behind undisputed team leader Alex Albon's.

“I think I have a chance every weekend, but at the same time it's difficult when improvements come for him”, said Sargeant. “But ultimately the team knows the differences between the cars.” Sargeant is not seriously linked with any rival teams…

‘Obviously’: Alex Albon concerned with Williams issue that ‘cost’ Logan Sargeant at Monaco GP

Alex Albon has admitted that he is concerned with one issue at Williams which ‘cost’ teammate Logan Sargeant heavily at the Monaco GP after finishing it two laps down. The Grove squad scored their first points of the season on the streets of the Principality last week. But while Albon finished the Monaco GP in P9 after qualifying inside the top 10, their joy was tempered slightly by Sargeant settling for 15th place among the 16 drivers to finish.

Williams ‘cost’ Logan Sargeant at the Monaco GP without their upgraded rear wing. Albon’s Q3 appearance at the Monaco GP was even his and Williams’ first time in the top 10 shoot-out this year. Sargeant, on the other hand, exited qualifying in Q1 having set the 17th-fastest lap. But Albon feels the 23-year-old may have made Q2 if they had equal machinery.

Alex Albon is concerned that Logan Sargeant does not have the same parts. Williams are still working to get enough parts ready to afford Sargeant their latest upgrades. But the American will likely have to wait for the Spanish GP from June 21-23 to enjoy parity on parts with Albon, who also concedes Sargeant is unlikely to get them at the Canadian GP.

Formula 1: 5 possible replacements for Logan Sargeant in 2025
Logan Sargeant will likely not be returning to Williams for the 2025 Formula 1 season. Who will take over as Alex Albon's teammate?

    Beyond the Flag (Weblog)

Who his teammate will be in 2025 remains unknown, but it is likely that the team will move on from Logan Sargeant after 2024. Here are five possible replacements for the American driver.
    1. Esteban Ocon: Esteban Ocon entered the 2024 season with his Alpine contract set to expire at the end of the year, and he is indeed set to leave the team once the season ends.

    2. Valtteri Bottas: With Sauber set to become Audi in 2026, it appears likely that the team will move on from Valtteri Bottas, and it appears that that will happen after 2024 as they look to shore up their roster a year early.
    3. Pierre Gasly: After a number of good years with AlphaTauri, Pierre Gasly made his way to Alpine in 2023 in an effort to move his career forward.

    4. Mick Schumacher: Ever since Mick Schumacher’s tenure at Haas ended in 2022, he has been a reserve driver for Mercedes.
    5. Kimi Antonelli: Rumors of Kimi Antonelli entering Formula 1 next season have really picked up over the past few weeks.

Magnussen would be dealt with in my time says Villeneuve.
“In my time, Magnussen would no longer be so aggressive”, Jacques Villeneuve told Sport1. “We would have pushed him into the wall and made it clear to him - 'This is not acceptable'.”

A photographer even had to seek medical treatment in hospital after being hit by debris - and Magnussen's teammate Nico Hulkenberg, also caught up in the ruckus, admitted he and Perez immediately blamed the Danish driver.

“I'm a bit angry. When we got out the car, we said to Kevin, 'Hey, what's going on?'” Hulkenberg admitted. “'That spot is too narrow and too fast to overtake at'.”

One of Villeneuve's contemporaries, Ralf Schumacher, agreed on Sky Deutschland: “Perez did not expect that, because a normal person does not see any gap there.”

Jacques Villeneuve insists F1 star should be BANNED for Canadian Grand Prix
1997 Formula 1 champion Jacques Villeneuve has voiced his disapproval of Haas driver Kevin Magnussen after the Dane's contribution to a crash two weeks ago in Monaco
    • 5 Jun 2024

    The Mirror

Villeneuve thinks the Haas driver was lucky to escape a similar punishment for his role in that Monaco crash. "What was Magnussen thinking? He has been around for a long time," he told Best Online Poker Sites. "The driver in front, in this instance Sergio Perez, won't be looking in his mirror. You give a quick glimpse, see the guy is not next to you and even if he is getting close, you take your line.”

"When you are the guy behind, you are the one supposed to be understanding what is happening in front of you and to be able to judge what will happen. There was obviously no room and a massive crash happened. Then, when he gets out of the car, Magnussen says, 'He should have given me space.' We have always been taught that the driver behind is responsible.”

"If you want to go side by side you have to be side by side, not your front wing near the rear wheels. What is that all about? The fact is, Magnussen did not get out of the car and say, 'Oops sorry, I completely messed up.' Instead, he suggested it should have been the other way. Excuse me? What planet are we living on?”

F1 News: Kevin Magnussen Chastised For Monaco GP Crash - 'Not Formula 4'

    Newsweek

Villeneuve, speaking with Best Online Poker Sites, lambasted the Haas driver for his tactical choices during the race: "If you want to go side by side you have to be side by side, not your front wing near the rear wheels. What is that all about?" Villeneuve's critique escalated as he expressed astonishment and frustration over Magnussen's refusal to acknowledge his mistake right after the incident, instead shifting the blame onto Perez.

"The fact is, Magnussen did not get out of the car and say, 'Oops sorry, I completely messed up.' Instead, he suggested it should have been the other way. Excuse me? What planet are we living on? The utter lack of comprehension on Magnussen's part befuddles me. We are in F1 here, not Formula 4 where a 15 year-old might not have that understanding yet."

Villeneuve further criticized the FIA's lack of decisive action, suggesting a possible bias in the sport's governing mechanisms. "And the fact he was not even penalised shows that the system is not neutral. If he had been penalised he would have been banned for one race. They decided not to. Why have the rule in place? "It was massive. It was dangerous. It was ridiculous. And he was 17th and 18th or something. He was not even going for the lead. Come on. First lap and you cannot even judge that. It is mad."

F1 champion makes race ban plea for ‘dangerous and ridiculous’ Magnussen
Kevin Magnussen was involved in a high-speed collision on the opening lap of the Monaco Grand Prix with Red Bull's Sergio Perez.

1997 Formula 1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve has lashed out at Kevin Magnussen following his crash on the opening lap of the Monaco Grand Prix. Magnussen was involved in an incident with Sergio Perez that eliminated both drivers from the race, as well as Magnussen's Haas team-mate Nico Hulkenberg.

The Danish driver pinned the blame on Perez, while the Red Bull driver insisted that Magnussen should have backed off to avoid contact. Magnussen escaped a penalty for the incident, which likely would have resulted in a race ban with his penalty point tally resting at 10 prior to the crash (any driver that receives 12 penalty points in 12 months is automatically handed a race ban).

Villeneuve insisted that Magnussen should have conceded to Perez and questioned his post-crash response. “If you want to go side by side you have to be side by side, not your front wing near the rear wheels,” he told Best Online Poker sites. “What is that all about? The fact is, Magnussen did not get out of the car and say, ’Oops sorry, I completely messed up.‘ Instead, he suggested it should have been the other way.”

Kevin Magnussen’s ‘brain cells’ questioned with Haas told to bring ‘boxing gloves’
    31 May 2024 4:15 PM

    PlanetF1.com

Dutch racer Tom Coronel has urged Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu to give Kevin Magnussen “a few punches on the head” after his “really stupid action” at the start of the Monaco Grand Prix. Appearing on the RN365 podcast, Coronel was stunned that the stewards took no action on Magnussen – and has called for Haas boss Komatsu to dish out his own punishment.

He said: “Magnussen is taking too much risk, that is one hundred per cent a fact. After all, it is very simple: that pendulum that follows goes up and then you are on the outside on the dirt. That action had no chance of succeeding anyway. But as a driver you do have just a bit more freedom on that first lap, at least to put your car in between something. Perez also had a terrible exit from that first corner, but Magnussen should have unloaded just as well.”

“That swing uphill is not suitable for two men driving side by side, so that action was just not thought through. I can imagine that action not being penalised, but if I were the Haas team boss, I would still put on my boxing gloves and give him a few punches on the head. Because which brain cell did he use the moment he took that action?”

‘Gone’ verdict delivered as Kevin Magnussen courts F1 race ban
    04 Jun 2024
    Michelle Foster
    PlanetF1.com

Kevin Magnussen may be a “great” guy off the track, but Ralf Schumacher says when the visor comes down all of that is “gone” and it will earn him a race ban before F1 2024 is over. Magnussen has now twice played defender in order to help his team-mate Nico Hulkenberg score points, but has coloured outside the lines while doing so.

His antics in Jeddah against Yuki Tsunoda and Alex Albon, in which the Dane went off the track in order to retain his position, were frowned on and earned Magnussen a time penalty while the stewards were a lot more harsh in their verdict in Miami given his multiple transgressions. Sticking his nose up the inside of the Red Bull at a point where one could argue that was ill-advised, the two collided and were out of the race with Nico Hulkenberg the unfortunate victim.

The stewards rules no further action, but Schumacher believes Magnussen was in the wrong. “Where would Magnussen have gone? He would have been on the outside in the next corner, so I didn’t understand the point of it,” he said. Declaring that Magnussen always wants to “run headfirst into the wall.”
