Lewis Hamilton 'refusing to accept reality' as Brit accused of causing Mercedes problems.
Lewis Hamilton has been accused of being unwilling to accept the reality surrounding Mercedes’ W15. The British driver has once again struggled so far this season, with former F1 technical director Gary Anderson urging Hamilton to ‘learn’ from team-mate George Russell.

Lewis Hamilton has suffered his worst start to an F1 season. “It has been there on occasion – two poles and one win since the end of 2021 – but has been fleeting. The Mercedes is generally inconsistent. This is all likely leading him astray and Hamilton does not seem willing to accept the reality."

He warned that Hamilton's stance could harm Mercedes further down the line, adding: “There is a knock-on effect that hampers the car’s development long-term, too. If you make odd choices on set-up then a team fails to find a baseline for performance and setup. It limits learning about the car. If that is absent then the development path, knowing what to work on in the wind tunnel and improving aerodynamic performance, will be confused too.

Lewis Hamilton ‘not accepting reality’ as Mercedes warned of W15 set-up experiments

Lewis Hamilton is not “willing to accept the reality” of Mercedes’ situation in F1 2024, with his setup experiments likely to have “long-term” consequences for the team’s development of the W15 car.

That is the view of former F1 technical director Gary Anderson, who has urged Hamilton to “look and learn” from team-mate George Russell in the seven-time World Champion’s bid to kickstart his season. Writing in his column for the Telegraph, he said:

“There might be something in Hamilton chasing the few times that Mercedes have found their sweet spot in the last few years. “It has been there on occasion – two poles and one win since the end of 2021 – but has been fleeting. The Mercedes is generally inconsistent. This is all likely leading him astray and Hamilton does not seem willing to accept the reality.”

Mercedes confirm W15 ‘upgrade package’ with ‘no pleasure’ admission made

Allison explained that upgrades will soon be arriving on the W15 to try and bring the team closer to those at the front of the competitive order, but also to fix what he described as the “underlying balance that is causing us difficulty.”

He revealed that the W15 struggled to get to grips on a track which is particularly tough on its front tyres in the Shanghai International Circuit, which made what was a well-driven race by both drivers tougher to digest as the result did not perhaps reflect how well they had gone on Sunday.

“It’s obviously a pleasure to talk about things when you’ve had a great race and it’s lovely to the pleasure of seeing your car do well,” Allison said in Mercedes’ post-China debrief. “It’s somewhat less pleasurable to do the same when things are not as enjoyable, when the car is not as good…”

Ferrari mess it up with Lewis Hamilton as worries raised for 2025 season

Ferrari were wrong to let Carlos Sainz in order to sign Lewis Hamilton, according to Express Sport readers. The legendary Brit shocked the motorsport world when his switch to the Scuderia was announced in February, but his performances since then have raised concerns about his longevity in the sport.

In a survey of 1,610 Express Sport readers, 82 per cent believed that Vasseur had made a mistake in not renewing Sainz’s contract, with only 18 per cent believing that the Frenchman was correct to cast the former Renault and McLaren star aside and sign Hamilton when he had the chance.

Sainz’s third Grand Prix victory of his career was then backed up by another podium in Japan before his streak of top-three finishes came to an end with a P5 in Shanghai last weekend. Such consistent displays have left him just seven points behind Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc, despite missing a race through illness.

Rosberg admits 'huge surprise' at Hamilton's Ferrari switch

Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton were team mates at Mercedes and fierce title rivals for four seasons, but the 2016 champion admits that the news that Hamilton is to switch to Ferrari in 2025 had nonetheless come as a big shock to him.

"At the moment it also seems in performance terms to be the right decision for him," Rosberg argued. "Maybe he makes an amazing move like at the time, 12 years ago, when he moved from McLaren to Mercedes.”

“McLaren were winning races, Mercedes were nowhere, and the moment he moved McLaren went backwards and Mercedes started winning races. Maybe he can [achieve] the same timing done again.”
