Rally Discussion and Bar Talk Thread

Alex Fiorio, 1987 Group N champion, has passed away today at the age of 61, after a relatively short illness. Only 2 months ago he announced he was starting treatment. He was the son of Cesare Fiorio, boss of the Lancia team in the golden years.
I remember that after Monte, he thanked Matteo Fontana, who won a stage with Fiesta Rally3 thanks to changing conditions, taking the stage win away from Rossel with Ypsilon Rally2. This way, Alex remained the last Lancia driver who won a WRC stage, at Acropolis 1994.

Thanks for this interesting story. I was watching that Monte on TV, but didn't hear about it.

im a weak man. i see stuff like this and instantly lose my mind with the thoughts of "why the f are we even racing f1, touring, gts, prototypes, rallycross, nascar etc when we have THIS?". look at this. imagine all of us here, the 15 or so of us hahaha "OK, LETS FIND OUT WHOS THE CHAMP AMONG US".. and then booom, this is it>>

haha no, apparently its almost impossible to fire up the karts by themselves, so they just abandon the race. aussies are always nice so there was no fight hehe (like in american racing for example)

Rally cars doing burnouts, donuts and drifts... I'm sure its good fun to watch but it doesn't really reflect true rallying.

Funny that drivers have been fined etc for doing donuts but now a team boss thinks its a good promo tool. Perhaps M Sport should look towards the well established Drift series as they have this covered. Sure their old friends at Ford could supply them with some stonking V8s

The bit of his quote that made me grin was " . From an organizational perspective, this meant there was no need for controls, time cards, zero cars or huge safety plans. They just fenced off an area and let the drivers send it."

That might fly in countries with a bit more cavalier spirit but could see that going down like a lead turd in H&S/litigation fearful states like our great nation!

New ideas and approaches are needed however appealing to the drifting/diffin crowd is at odds with what rallying is usually about even if a certain K Block esq would probably have begged to differ!

Watching the cars thrown about in a safe area is a bit of fun, but I'm not sure it would attract people to watch and become a fan of real rallying.

IMHO really good, representative, super-special stages are much better for that.

I agree. Some people seem to think rallying should be all about entertainment to attract average Netflix Joes who don't give a damn about cars.
Pro drift cars are 1000hp monsters that share nothing with the road cars, apart from kinda the bodyshell, from 90s Nissan Silvia to 2010s Mustang. But nobody thinks they should be replaced with funny prototypes, they would lose a lot of appeal, fans would hate them. Yet, for rallying they think it's an acceptable solution.

I agree, but better than nothing.

I just took a look at the new WRC trading cards, out of curiosity. They say they should also feature cars, but 90% of the cards I see in promo images are drivers, codrivers, helmets... if they want to attract fans, that's the wrong focus.
I thought at first they would be like the old Top Trumps with the pic of car and some technical data underneath. Maybe it's just the promo chosen cards, I don't know.

So "what WRC need" is to have Sami Pajari and Adrian Fourmaux doing donuts..... I.... Whats going on? hahaha
 

nothing super interesting here too, but they talked a little bit about 'the future'. but just the normal things, like "eh, nobody can buy a 1.5 milion rally1 car, we need cheaper cars so more people can buy and compete"... weirdly, they talked about having stuff on youtube, like "it doesnt matter how much a tv deal pays you, youtube is bigger". They say "F1 and MotoGP is fine, you dont NEED to have them on youtube, but WEC and WRC are not that big so they need to be on youtube". She said maybe they dont need to have all stages live to watch, but more highlights explaining it better whats going on during the day (something like that)

"fInalizing the regulations for next year" - talking about how many championships they are going to have because theres manufacturers, rally2 with kit, privateers... haha
