"This is a day I'll never forget," claims Hamilton after his magical maiden Ferrari victory.
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton delivered a landmark performance as he claimed his first victory in Ferrari colours, a triumph built on bold strategy and relentless pace during his last stint.

After climbing from the car, Hamilton spoke with unmistakable emotion about the significance of the moment. “This is an incredibly special moment. Winning my first race with Ferrari is something I've dreamt about since I was a child, and to finally achieve it feels incredible,” he said, openly acknowledging the difficult path that had led him to this point.

“There were moments last year when this moment felt almost impossible, but I’m so grateful to Fred for believing in me and everyone there for making me feel so at home. We’ve been working so hard all year and so many things have changed over the past months, and today is the result of all that effort," noted Hamilton. "The upgrades we brought this weekend performed exactly as we hoped, the car felt great, and the team executed everything perfectly. The pitstops were fantastic and every detail was handled brilliantly.”

He also highlighted the unique emotional dimension of winning for Ferrari. “I've been fortunate enough to experience many special moments in my career, but this one is different. Ferrari has the greatest fans in the world and seeing their passion, their energy and their support makes this victory even more meaningful. This is a day I'll never forget, and I hope it's the first of many wins that we can celebrate together.”

Stopping the 'Hamilton train' will not be easy, says Wolff
15 Jun 2026
The Straits Times

Lewis Hamilton is in the Formula One title reckoning and will be hard to stop now that he is a grand prix winner with Ferrari, according to his former Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff. "I'd rather not fight with him for a title because I know what he's capable of. If he smells blood, he goes," Austrian Wolff told reporters when asked about the great who won six of his titles with Mercedes. "I've seen it many years where suddenly the Lewis Hamilton train started to go and then it's very difficult to stop it." The Briton struggled last season, openly describing himself as "useless" and even telling Ferrari to find someone else. He had wondered if he still had what it takes and whether he would win again, but Sunday was all the proof he needed.

This season has been very different, with Hamilton galvanised by new rules and a willingness at Ferrari to make changes he has requested. Wolff suggested a new relationship with celebrity Kim Kardashian, who accompanied him in Monaco this month, was also playing a part. "The dynamics in the team look to be good, between him and his race engineer (Carlo Santi). I saw him on the podium, on the telly. That face shows me that he's very happy," said the Austrian. "Maybe the girlfriend helps...that you have a stable family life, and they seem to be getting on really well. I think it's all of those factors that put together the emotional, personal and professional perspective."

Hamilton has found joy -- and success -- again with Ferrari
14 Jun 2026
Nate Saunders
ESPN.co.uk

Lewis Hamilton can remember being a kid, lunch on his lap, watching Michael Schumacher win Formula 1 races for Ferrari, dreaming of one day doing it himself. On Sunday, he finally did it. "Just been reminded that it was 30 years ago that Michael won," a beaming Hamilton said after the race, his eyes twinkling as if he was back in his hometown of Stevenage in England.

"I would have been at home on my couch watching that race, probably like many of you, and with a plate on my lap, eating like a sandwich, or maybe chicken noodle soup or something like that. I was 12. And, yeah, just looking at that red car and thinking, 'I wonder what it's like sitting in that red cockpit?'" He paused and laughed, remembering one of his few grievances with Ferrari's fast-improving 2026 car.

"My cockpit happens to be white, which I've not been too happy about," he said. "I wanted [it] to be red like Michael's. I'll get it back red at some stage. But, yeah, [wondering] what it would be like to sit in that red car ... then be in that red suit, standing in first place in front of that amazing crew who was singing the national anthem. It was really amazing to witness and to see the joy in their eyes and to feel it with them. I nearly passed out after I hugged them. My heart was exploding with joy."

Everything that made Lewis Hamilton's first Ferrari F1 win possible
14 Jun 2026
SCOTT MITCHELL-MALM
The Race

The magnitude of Hamilton's first grand prix win for Ferrari, and first since July 2024, can only be properly understood by appreciating the recovery arc. It completes an impressive turnaround from his first year with the team, which turned out to be one of Hamilton's most disappointing seasons in F1. He failed to score a grand prix podium for the first time in his career, as the promise of an early sprint race pole and win in China turned out to be a false dawn. After that point in 2025, this union never looked like it was on a trajectory leading to success, which led to a lot of scrutiny over Hamilton's position.

"I'm only human," he said. "There's moments where I see the stuff and for sure there's moments where I allowed it to get to me and penetrate deeply." As world champion Lando Norris observed after the Barcelona race, Hamilton's taken "a lot of crap" and "it's nice he can stick the middle finger up to all of them". The biggest thing that's changed to facilitate that is F1 as a whole. The prospect of brand new rules freeing him from limitations specific to the ground-effect era was a hypothesis rooted in hope rather than expectation - something else Hamilton admitted.

But these cars definitely suit him better. The way they move around and what they can cope with under braking are a better match for how Hamilton wants to attack corner entries. It's fair to conclude these cars allow him to perform more consistently at his best and, though it has to be considered a blot on his copybook for not adapting better to the previous rules, it should also be recognised that Hamilton's peak is still clearly very high. "After a year like last year, there was definitely moments that I was like, 'Sheesh, maybe it is true that, when you get to a certain point, you lose it'," he said. "But I've proven that you don't."

Lewis Hamilton delivers menacing ‘right team’ verdict after maiden Ferrari F1 win

Now, the seven-time World Champion has made a menacing admission. “The team, they’ve been so kind. We come back to the garage after a difficult race and they’re like ‘Don’t worry, next time’,” he said answering a question from Motorsport Monday.

“They’re just so supportive through it all. For sure, results like this change everything and reinstate if there is a lack of confidence. I hope that’s this was a convincing gap and race. I think that it’s been happening over the last few races. The changes that I’ve asked for all of last year have been made. I now have the right team around me and I’ll have the right car around me and now I can start doing what I do best.”

Barcelona GP conclusions: Lewis Hamilton rediscovered, hidden Russell defeat, new Leclerc crisis
15 Jun 2026
Oliver Harden
PlanetF1.com

Lewis Hamilton has spoken a lot this year about his mission to, as he puts it, “remember who I am.” An interesting turn of phrase, the implication being that the last few years – not just his first season with Ferrari in 2025 but the period stretching all the way back to the trauma of Abu Dhabi 2021 – had in some way changed him. Not merely a lack of results, but a loss of identity. A different driver, yes, but perhaps a different man too.

Where once he oozed confidence and certainty, like all the truly great drivers, suddenly even he found himself needing some convincing. Is it the car that’s the problem here? Or – gulp – might it be me? It has been an ongoing process this season, this gradual journey of self-rediscovery helped by a steady stream of podiums in the most effective machinery he has had this side of 2021. Yet it wasn’t until around halfway through Sunday’s Barcelona Grand Prix that everything finally clicked back into place.

The moment came on Lap 34 when Lewis, with energy in his voice once again, asked his race engineer Carlo Santi if he was catching the Mercedes cars of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli ahead. “You are catching really well,” came the reply. “Keep pushing, keep pushing.” A sniff. That’s all it was. But sometimes that’s all it takes. That’s all a competitor of this intensity needs to hear for those old instincts to start firing up again.

Lewis Hamilton grateful to Ferrari for tolerating ‘relentless’ quest for F1 improvement.
“Well firstly, I wouldn’t be in this team without Fred… Fred is the one that made it happen, and of which I’m incredibly grateful to him for.”

Lewis Hamilton issued a special thank you to Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur for tolerating his “relentless” search for improvements, after taking a maiden Formula 1 win for the Italian giants. …quick to acknowledge that his incessant striving for change must not have been easy for the Frenchman, but “continued to believe” in him. “I think last year was really, really, really tough for him to deal with me coming, [it] was a big shock to the system,” Hamilton continued.

“Because I am very, very vocal – if I see something that I don’t think is right, I push very, very hard, that’s like at the core of who I am and I’m relentless with it. And I think it’s it’s not easy to be on the receiving end of that. When you’re also juggling a whole organisation, you know, and a culture that’s in its own is set in a certain way, and also, he’s French in Italian culture – it was a lot for him to juggle and I think very, very tough…”

“Because obviously he would do media as well but he continued to believe, continue to be a good friend, continue to to be a great teammate and an ally and really supportive and ultimately, really listened at the end. had to really ask – really, really ask – for some of the changes, and he enabled them to happen, which I’m forever grateful for, because then wouldn’t have happened without those changes. So, big, big thank you to him.”

The missing ingredient: Why Lewis Hamilton can lead Ferrari to Formula 1 glory
16 Jun 2026
Ben Hunt
GPblog.com

As someone who has followed Lewis Hamilton's F1 career extremely closely for over a decade, it was easy to appreciate the magnitude of his first win for Ferrari and the plaudits. After all, I've spend a huge chunk of my spare time researching and writing about his decision to move from Mercedes to Ferrari for a shot at winning the F1 title for my recently published book, Lewis in Red. However, now I have had time to let that victory sink in, and perhaps rather like Hamilton will be asking his Ferrari team today in Maranello, what's next?

The answer is simple. A full-out campaign to win the F1 title. Now, with three podiums, including that victory in Barcelona, plus a hefty upgrade package for the race in Spain, I am anticipating Ferrari, led by Hamilton, to seriously challenge for that elusive eighth world title that would move him clear of the all-time record he currently shares with Michael Schumacher. Formula 1's current regulations allow for substantial gains when teams correctly identify weaknesses and aggressively pursue solutions.

The gap to Mercedes may have appeared substantial at the start of the year but Hamilton in Barcelona was more that equal on pace. But Ferrari's challenge is not simply to improve their car. It is to maintain belief while doing so. That is where Hamilton becomes such an important figure. Hamilton is a winner. He is able to provide an ingredient that has been missing from Ferrari. His career is littered with examples of overcoming adversity.

McLaren claim "Ferrari has clearly made significant performance gains"
16 Jun 2026
Balazs Szabo
F1 Technical

Team Principal Andrea Stella acknowledged Ferrari’s surge: “Ferrari has clearly made significant performance gains, with recent upgrades now positioning them as race winners. Therefore, as competitors, we know there is more to do. Our analysis is very clear: we are reasonably competitive in the high speed sections but need to add aerodynamic grip to improve in the medium and low speed corners, where we are currently losing out.”

Tyre management, he said, was the decisive factor in the race: “Today, the key differentiator in the race came down to tyre management. The way the car and driver interact with the tyres over a long stint is an area we must investigate and improve upon.” He also suggested that strategy may have cost them: “Reviewing strategy is also an area to highlight as the three stop option may have been the better route. However, ultimately Lewis Hamilton looked the strongest on the day with Ferrari in condition to contest at the front regardless.”

Hamilton's real Barcelona pace advantage explained
15 Jun 2026
JON NOBLE
The Race

There is little doubt that Lewis Hamilton received a big helping hand in his charge to victory in Formula 1's Barcelona Grand Prix with the late-race virtual safety car. But was the VSC a single element stroke of luck that effectively won the race and derailed any hope for Mercedes? Or would Hamilton have still triumphed without it? While nobody can know for definite about the turn of events if the VSC had not come about, the consensus from both Mercedes and Ferrari was that Hamilton was still most likely set to win – but that it would have been mighty close.

Toto Wolff's conclusion was: "Lewis was the quickest afterwards, so even if we would have come out in front of him, it would have been very tricky to hold him behind." Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur had his own idea about the outcome "We would have won the race, perhaps with a bit less," he said. "But we were also in a good situation with a fresh set of tyres at this stage, and it was positive for us. I don't want to do the calculation of what would have been the race with this or this, but I think we were already in a very good situation."

And while we will never know for sure how things would have panned out, it is understood that Mercedes' post-race analysis gave its own verdict. It is that Hamilton would not have had an easy time but would have been on target to take the lead with two or three laps to go – ending the race with only a one or two-seconds lead. This all shows the VSC did not hand Hamilton the win; but it made sure the victory was made a lot more straightforward.

F1 Needed Hamilton’s Ferrari Win Just as Much, if Not More
Whether it's a hero, a villain, or an underdog story, F1 thrives on eye-catching headlines to retain viewership. But sometimes, sometimes it's just a heart-warming story involving Lewis Hamilton.

The Drive

It’s finally happened. After a 41-race winless streak, Sir Lewis Hamilton achieved what even he’s admitted he doubted would ever come: his 106th Formula 1 win. But not just any win, his first Grand Prix with Scuderia Ferrari. It’s no surprise how the world has reacted to it, but even more so, how his peers have reacted to the Brit’s dominant win at yesterday’s Spanish Grand Prix. It’s not unusual for drivers to walk up to the race winner and give them a pat on the back, a fist bump, or maybe even a hug if they’re somewhat friends.

For Hamilton’s latest win, however, fellow drivers took to social media to comment on F1’s posts, mostly by re-sharing or posting their own photos of the seven-time world champion, adding a congratulatory message. And that was just the public-facing message—I’m sure there was a ton more behind the scenes. It almost feels as if the guy had won the world championship instead of a random GP. George Russell, who finished on the podium with Hamilton and Lando Norris, was the first one to congratulate him, while making a little innocent dig at the Ferrari driver’s age.

“Huge congrats to this guy because I know how hard he works,” said Russell. “We spent a lot of years together at Mercedes, so I’m really pleased to see him back to the Lewis I remember when I was growing up watching Formula 1.” Norris, who rounded up the all-British podium, also chimed in, as well as Kimi Antonelli, Nico Hulkenberg, Max Verstappen, and, of course, his teammate Charles Leclerc, who did not finish the race due to a mechanical failure.

The true cost of Mercedes' biggest 2026 weakness

JOSH SUTTILL
The Race

Mercedes knows it cannot afford non-finishes in a "regular, continued way" if it's to see off the increased championship threat from Ferrari this Formula 1 season.
Kimi Antonelli and George Russell have both lost big chunks of points to race-ending mechanical failures, which has left Mercedes (via Antonelli) with a 41-point advantage in the drivers' championship and a 72-point constructors' championship lead, both of which should be bigger.

"I'm underwhelmed," said team principal Toto Wolff after Mercedes' reliability let it down again at Barcelona, as Antonelli retired from second place late on. "You can't DNF cars in a kind of regular, continued way. Losing 25 points in a constructors' championship [fight] in Montreal and losing another 18 points today. In order to finish first, first you have to finish. Reliability, this is what we need to get on top of. That's number one."

"We just can't compete for a championship if every second race a car is losing fat points. It's one and then the other and to finish first, first you have to finish. That's just not good enough," Toto Wolff told Sky Sports F1.

Speaking to media including Crash.net on Sunday evening in Barcelona, Wolff added: "You see a DNF robs you of 25 points and it's wide open. That's why we can't afford to not finish. Mercedes' advantage in the Constructors' Championship was trimmed to 72 points over Ferrari, who also had a retirement on Sunday as Charles Leclerc suffered a terminal hydraulics problem.

We may just need to recalibrate slightly.”

Mercedes plan fresh F1 driver talks as new obstacle appears
Mercedes was beaten for the first time this year as Lewis Hamilton sealed victory for Ferrari in Barcelona last Sunday.

Fergal Walsh

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has stated he will enter discussions with his drivers over how the squad manages races when another party is involved in the fight. Mercedes was forced to react to Hamilton's early pit stop in the race, but it generated complaints from George Russell who felt it opened the door to a better strategy for his team-mate Kimi Antonelli.

The duo would later go wheel-to-wheel in the race before Antonelli retired with a power unit issue. But with Mercedes finally feeling pressure from another team this year, Wolff has suggested it may need to alter its approach going forward. “We didn't interfere in them fighting because that's how we've always raced. But it's a situation we need to look into for the future with both drivers, how to handle a situation where there's a pace differential if we are fighting for a victory or the risk of losing a victory.”

Mercedes explains the strategy call and the missed victory

Trackside Engineering Director Andrew Shovlin explained, the race evolved in ways that made that choice increasingly costly: “Despite getting a car on the podium, we leave Barcelona with a feeling of disappointment. We were not fast enough today and know that we can't afford to be retiring with a reliability issue.”

Shovlin noted that the opening phase went as expected: “Both cars got off the line well despite being on the Medium compound and the first stint ran broadly to plan. The second stint exposed the limits of Mercedes’ pace relative to Hamilton: “Through the second stint, we didn't have the pace to build a sufficient gap to Lewis to be able to cover his three stop with George, so we elected to commit to the two stop to keep track position.”

Shovlin acknowledged the scale of the setback: “We'll be working hard to understand why Kimi's car stopped and similarly working out where we can find a bit more pace, as ultimately, we lacked the speed to control the race and that's what cost us the win.”

Lando Norris carried the momentum of a strong Barcelona weekend into qualifying, but when the fight tightened in Q3, McLaren found themselves edged out by Mercedes and Ferrari at the decisive moment.

Compared to Monaco, we’re back closer to where we should be, and the pace felt better overall.”

Even so, Norris was clear that the gap to the front remained too large for comfort. “The gap to Pole, around three and a half tenth, is still significant, and the car wasn’t easy to drive with the wind and heat making it inconsistent, especially at the rear,” he explained.

In the post race press conference, Norris reflected on what he called a “tough afternoon”. “Yeah, tough race,” he said to media, including Motorsport Week.

“I did my best to keep up with these guys, but they were too quick. So we stayed there and gave ourselves a chance if anything happened, and we obviously got a bit lucky with Antonelli going out. But otherwise, I’m very happy. Very happy for the team, very happy to be back on the podium. So, a good day for us. Ah, just a little bit of everything at the minute,” he said on what was needed to beat F1’s current benchmark teams.”

“We’re doing a good job as a team, and I think we’re making good progress, but these guys are just doing a better job. So, we have to give credit to them and admit to ourselves that we’ve got to keep working hard and keep putting in the effort. But the whole team is doing that, so I’m very happy with them. We just have to keep our heads down and keep working, and we’ll get there soon.”

McLaren confirms another upgrade package for Norris and Piastri

“Ferrari at the moment is the car with the best chassis,” analysed McLaren team principal Andrea Stella. “We see in the middle sector, especially in the medium-speed corners, that Ferrari is the fastest in the corners, not necessarily the fastest in the straights." The Italian praises Ferrari’s chassis, but the best F1 car in his view is the Mercedes of Andrea Kimi Antonelli and George Russell.“Probably Mercedes over a single lap, the best car overall. When the chassis and the power unit are both considered."

If Stella has his way, that won’t be the case for long. The McLaren team boss is announcing upgrades for the MCL40. “We aim for the coming races to develop our car further by bringing some upgrades, but at the same time, we are certain that our competitors will also have some upgrades." Indeed, for example, Red Bull Racing will have a major package of changes in Austria. That’s why Stella is mainly looking at himself.

“Honestly, we want to look at our own trajectory, we want to make sure that race by race we improve our car, and then we kind of let the results take care of themselves. So, maximum focus at the moment is, I would say, internal, what we need to do to improve the car, and then once we are racing, we will see what we need to do."

Verstappen gets first look at much-discussed Red Bull update.
Max Verstappen is in England this Thursday, where he is visiting the Red Bull Racing factory. The Dutchman will likely take a seat in the simulator to prepare for the Austrian Grand Prix. No doubt Verstappen will also talk with his engineers about the updates planned for the Red Bull Ring.

GPblog.com

If the signs don’t deceive, the RB22 of Verstappen and teammate Isack Hadjar will look quite different at the upcoming race in Austria compared to the last one near Barcelona. Team boss Laurent Mekies confirmed to GPblog last weekend that the car will at least become significantly lighter. In Formula 1, the general rule is that the less weight a car carries, the faster it tends to be. Red Bull is hoping the update delivers a significant performance gain.

It will surely take Verstappen a while to get used to how the car behaves on track. He may get an initial feel for it during a simulator session. Verstappen is known to normally travel to Milton Keynes before every Grand Prix to use the simulator and work on the race setup. Although it’s not certain why Verstappen is in the British town this Thursday, it’s safe to assume that a run in the simulator is high on his to-do list.

Red Bull Racing is currently working hard on further upgrade packages for the RB22. The expectation is that new features will be on the car before the summer break, although it probably won’t be as large a package as for the Red Bull Ring. In the coming weeks, it will become clear whether Verstappen will still give his yes to Red Bull Racing. Much (if not everything) will depend on the development curve the Austrians manage to achieve in the weeks ahead. Should Ferrari, Mercedes, and McLaren pull further away from Red Bull, the decision to move on will likely be easier than if the Austrians manage to shrink — or even close — the current gap.

Max Verstappen casts ‘work in progress’ verdict for Red Bull after F1 Barcelona GP

Looking back on the race, Max Verstappen conceded that the result was the maximum he could have achieved with the car he had. “Yeah, we were just a little bit off,” he told media including Motorsport Week. “The strategy, that was good. I had the right tyres, actually, because for me, the hard tyres didn’t feel good.”

When asked if the RB22 was essentially exposed at the track, Verstappen concurred, adding that as things stand the Milton-Keynes-based team were probably only the fourth-fastest package. “I think for sure that in high speed, that was [evident] even in qualifying,” he added. “It’s just high-energy tracks, high-deg tracks, that’s just where we seem to lack still. I think in general, we’re just the fourth fastest team. It won’t change the outcome of any of the tracks unless we bring performance. Because we are not going to change it by just changing the setup.”

“Whoever brings upgrades will make a jump. It just depends always who is bringing the biggest one,” Verstappen emphasised. “It’s clear that I think we are still behind the Ferrari, Mercedes and McLaren, because we finished behind each one of them. So we’re still P4 as a team. Maybe a little bit better, but still not where we want to be. But it’s a work in progress.”

The key Red Bull factors hurting Max Verstappen's season explained
RacingNews365 technical analyst Paolo Filisetti dives into the key areas Red Bull is struggling compared to its rivals this season and where it needs to introduce developments.
18 June 2026
Paolo Filisetti
RacingNews365

The Red Bull RB22 now appears to be firmly established as the fourth-fastest car among the leading teams. The car simply lacks performance, and in Barcelona it became clear during the race that Max Verstappen was consigned to an anonymous afternoon, unable to match the pace of Mercedes, Ferrari or even McLaren.

Reflecting on the Barcelona weekend, Verstappen made no secret of his frustration, admitting that until the RB22 receives further upgrades, this is the level of performance Red Bull can expect to extract from the car. Judging by its behaviour on track, the RB22 is lacking downforce but, more importantly, it is struggling to generate sufficient energy in the tyres. Tyre degradation in Spain was extremely high, with Verstappen consistently reporting lateral sliding throughout the race.

It is difficult to identify one specific area that requires improvement. Instead, Red Bull must focus on achieving better interaction between its aerodynamic load distribution and its ability to generate tyre energy through the car's dynamic set-up. The opportunity to reverse the current trend still exists, but Red Bull must act quickly if it is to prevent the gap to the front-running teams from growing even further.

Red Bull handed internally 'struggling' claim as Max Verstappen frustration continues
Red Bull has seen several senior figures depart in recent years, but according to F1’s 2016 world champion, one exit is still yet to be recovered from.

Nico Rosberg has claimed that he has heard internally that Red Bull is still "struggling" since the departure of Adrian Newey, with Max Verstappen becoming frustrated with the team's current performance. The four-time world champion had to settle for a lonely fourth in the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, with Red Bull unable to challenge Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren.

While Verstappen has managed to wrestle the RB22 into strong starting positions in recent races, come race day, Red Bull are unable to compete at the front. "They don't seem to have a car capable of fighting, chassis-wise, because we all know now they have the best engine," 1997 world champion Jacques Villeneuve told Sky F1. When you see Max not being in a fight, it's because he's already on the edge with the car."

According to the 2016 world champion, he has heard that the Milton Keynes-based outfit is yet to truly recover from the departure of Newey, particularly when it comes to the rate at which it is developing upgrades. "We have to be careful here, because it's the internal combustion engine that they have the best, but that does not mean they have the most average power throughout the whole lap, and they are very likely down in terms of power where it matters," Rosberg added. "Even the development rate this year — the others are developing faster. It seems like they're struggling to keep up. So yeah, not a great situation for them at the moment."

Max Verstappen leaves Red Bull waiting after crucial future talks

Attendees at the Hangar 7 meeting included Mark Mateschitz and Oliver Mintzlaff, as well as an appearance by Chalerm Yoovidhya, who rarely leaves Dubai, with Red Bull said to have been seeking reassurances that Verstappen will remain committed to the team beyond this season, with the negotiations focusing on attempting to convince him to write out the escape clause from his contract.

However, it’s understood that Verstappen was unyielding on the escape clause detail and, on his future, has not yet given Red Bull commitment beyond this season; it’s a situation with which it’s said the shareholders are unhappy.

Indeed, sources have suggested that Verstappen is considering activating his escape clause this summer, although, when asked by PlanetF1.com what he wants to see from Red Bull in order to not do so this summer, the Dutchman declined to go into detail: “If there is anything new about what I’m doing, I will let you know.”

How Aston Martin ended up with the 'worst' F1 car in 2026.
Fernando Alonso called the Aston Martin the worst car with the worst engine in Formula 1 at his home race - and the evidence suggests he's right.
17 June 2026
Pablo Elizalde
Motor Sport Magazine

From the first pre-season test in Bahrain, the AMR26 suffered reliability problems that suggested deep integration issues between the power unit and the rest of the car. Those problems didn’t resolve themselves as the season progressed. In Barcelona, Alonso described a gearbox-power unit interface that was still fundamentally broken: “In some corners it felt like pulling a handbrake, complete rear locking with both rear wheels fully locked.”

“In other corners, I had what felt like half-throttle while braking, and then you just go straight on. So every lap is a bit of a lottery at the moment.” Those are not vague complaints about a car that lacks pace, but rather precise mechanical failures – a gearbox and a power unit that are not talking to each other properly – and they point to problems that cannot be fixed with a new front wing or an updated diffuser. Despite Newey’s input, the aerodynamic picture is no more encouraging.

Barcelona, with its mixture of high-speed sections demanding downforce and stability, is among the most diagnostic circuits on the calendar, and Aston Martin had nowhere to hide.
Both Alonso and Lance Stroll were outpaced by a full second by Valtteri Bottas in the Cadillac, the new team with none of Aston Martin‘s resources, none of its experience and none of its star signings. No disrespect to Cadillac, which has been doing a solid job as it gets to grips with F1, but for Aston, that was an embarrassing display.

Steiner tears into Aston Martin: 'Not F1 standards anymore'

Michael Delaney
F1i.com

Speaking on The Red Flags Podcast, Steiner did not hesitate when asked to identify the biggest disappointment of the recent race weekend in Spain. "I think it must be Aston Martin because Aston Martin makes even Cadillac look good, and Cadillac was down three laps at the end of a race," The Italian then twisted the knife even further.

"But it made Cadillac look good. What Aston Martin is doing now is just, in my opinion, not acceptable." Steiner believes the situation has reached a level that should concern everyone involved. "It's not F1 standards anymore. It's like having the local guy there. You're dead last, but by a mile and then you don't finish the race as well,” he said.

Despite his blistering criticism, Steiner stopped short of accusing Stroll of lacking commitment. In fact, he argued the opposite. "It's not a lack of trying from Lawrence Stroll," he said. "I think there are very few people who put this much money of their own into Formula 1 as Lawrence did. But obviously, he cannot get it right."

Aston Martin F1 boss apologises after “difficult” Barcelona showing
Aston Martin continued its disappointing 2026 Formula 1 season with a poor showing at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix

Sam Hall, Adam Cooper
Crash.Net

Mike Krack has made a public apology to fans at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix for the team’s below-par Formula 1 showing in Spain. “A disappointing weekend, disappointing weeks, difficult weeks,” Krack told media including Crash.net. “I think we expected a difficult weekend, but then having poor performance and then not finishing or having two DNFs does not make it easy.”

“In the first place, I feel sorry for all the fans in green shirts in the grandstands in the paddock. There were many. When we drove in and out [of the circuit], it was so nice to see all these people with the green shirts, and we could not give them anything to cheer about, which is a shame because we started from the pit lane and then we could not finish the race in a decent result.”

“So in the first place, I'm really sorry for all the fans that have bought expensive tickets to see, to see their heroes, and we could not give them the pathway to perform.”

Aston Martin abandons the AMR26: all-new car on the way
16 Jun 2026
Ludo van Denderen
GPblog.com

Aston Martin feels like it’s competing in a completely different class from Formula 1 with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll’s underperforming AMR26. But there is (perhaps) hope: In a few weeks, the British team will introduce an entirely new car.

GPblog understands that it’s a B-spec, effectively a completely new car that is, in principle, set to see the light of day at Zandvoort. Will it deliver what’s hoped for? That remains to be seen. The fact is that the first AMR26 is the first car on which the usually rightly praised Newey has taken a wrong turn. Now the lauded designer has the chance to set things right. If anyone can, it should be Newey. Until then, Aston Martin is trying to make the best of it. More than trailing at the back doesn’t seem possible, not least due to the many reliability problems plaguing Aston Martin and power unit supplier Honda.

“Well, you always learn new things, as crazy as it might sound, you know, when you are between three and four seconds off, you are thinking you are driving in a different category yet, actually, but still you learn a lot,” said Chief Trackside Officer Mike Krack to, among others, GPblog. “I think we learned a great deal how we have to adjust our processes to get the maximum out of it. So, there are some small positives, it is difficult to see them. The single pit stop that we did was very good, in my opinion. And we have to work with these and try to improve in all other areas,” Krack concluded.

Aston Martin defends Adrian Newey gamble as AMR26 issues run deeper
18 Jun 2026
Jamie Woodhouse
PlanetF1.com

Aston Martin has a “strong leader” in Adrian Newey. The team remains committed to holding off on upgrades until a significant breakthrough can be introduced. Krack was therefore asked how long Aston Martin can afford not bringing upgrades considering such results. “Yeah, I agree, and it’s weighing on everyone,” he told PlanetF1.com and others.

“You can feel it. You can feel it in the garage. You can feel it especially with the drivers. We discussed it already before. It’s a very difficult situation. On the other hand, we have a strong leader. When the decision was made, it’s for all of us to commit to that decision, even if it’s difficult. It is our job to keep the motivation high, to learn as much as you can. I think there are a lot of things that we can improve still with this car,” Krack continued.

“It would be easy to say we’ll just go in circles and wait for the upgrades. Some of the problems we have will still be there, so we need to solve them. We need to use the opportunities now to solve them, or at least get better.” Asked to expand on the problems which he was referring to, Krack added: “Driveability, the shifting, how the whole drivetrain is reacting, the energy. These are all things where I think we still have a lot of work to do, and any issue that you have with these will not be solved just by putting maybe a bit more power or a bit more downforce. These problems will persist. So you have to solve that.”

Honda F1 chief outlines ‘fundamental’ targets with positive Aston Martin update

Jack Oliver Smith
Motorsport Week

Speaking exclusively to Motorsport Week in Monaco, Honda’s Formula 1 trackside chief engineer Shintaro Orihara pinned a lot of the gradual improvements on Aston’s continuing positivity amid the hard work. “I would say even [thought] we had a hard time in winter testing, still our relationship was good, or open, thanks to Mike Krack’s characteristics,” he said.

“He said he never complained to Honda, and he is always open to Honda. Also, he respects Honda and his characteristics made a good atmosphere in the team trackside. So, I would say we never had any problem between [the] team’s side and Honda trackside, thanks to Mike’s big effort. Then we started from good position, but again work together with an open mind make our relationship more stronger, race by race.”

“Also, factory side, Aston Martin understands what kind of support Honda needs to improve reliability and they gave us all support we need. That is also positive thing. We [have] had a lot of meetings between Aston Martin’s factory and Honda’s factory to improve the reliability. So, I think from beginning we had a good relationship, but thanks to big issue that getting better, better, better step by step.”

Sainz sends warning to Williams over 2028 ambitions: "How long am I willing to wait?".
Carlos Sainz has admitted he is considering how long he is prepared to wait for Williams to return to the front of Formula 1, as fears their goals might have been delayed by "a few months or a year".
21 Jun 2026
Kieran Lynch
GPblog.com

In an interview with the Spanish publication, Sainz still supports Vowles in his belief that Williams can fight with the top teams in the future, even if their slow start to 2026 means those goals have been pushed back by up to a year.

"I think it is now a realistic goal, but it is also true that the step backwards we have taken this year may have delayed that goal by a few months or a year. I don't know exactly how much he has delayed it in my idea of time, of what I thought it was going to take for this project to be a team to win.”

"It is true that last year we were closer than expected to the leaders, and this year further away than expected, so maybe one thing balances the other and it is something that I am working on, also in my head, how long I am willing to wait to win again in Formula 1 and I want that time to be as short as possible and that's why, even if James says 2028, I'm going to push the team to be earlier."

Sainz shocked – tells Williams to ‘go back to the drawing board’
20/06/2026
Michael Delaney
F1i.com

Carlos Sainz arrived in Barcelona expecting a difficult weekend for Williams, but he left with something far more troubling: confirmation that the team's performance deficit is deeper than even he anticipated. "I think realistically speaking, we expected it to be hard," Sainz said. "Looking back at it, I think it was a bit of a shock how far [off] we are in medium and high-speed corners. Partly, it's due to weight, but even more importantly, it's downforce in the car."

Sainz stopped short of describing the Barcelona performance as a complete shock, but admitted it forced the team to confront just how far it remains from its objectives. "So I think it was a massive - I don't want to call it a shock, not even a wake-up call, because we knew it, but a realisation that we are really far from where we should be, where we targeted to be,” he said.

The realisation has prompted calls for urgent action. "I think it's time to go back to the drawing board and start bringing more things to the car, because clearly, on a medium-speed track, we are very far off,” he said. "Yes, I know what is coming, and for sure, what normally comes from this team really tends to work," he said. "But at the same time, I'm not sure if it's enough to cut the gap that we have on this sort of track. So I think we need to do more than we are doing already,” he added.

"Quite a shock" - Carlos Sainz concedes Williams' heavy F1 deficit in Barcelona
Carlos Sainz was the lead Williams in 14th place on Friday at the Formula 1 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix

Crash.Net

Carlos Sainz conceded that Friday at the Formula 1 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix was ‘one of the toughest I can remember’ after Williams’ “key weaknesses” were exposed. The Spaniard ended Friday in 14th place, five positions clear of team-mate Alex Albon, four-tenths off the top 10.

But the problems facing Williams became increasingly evident on the long runs, with Sainz revealing the extent of the challenge for the remainder of the weekend. “To be honest, we were expecting a tough Friday in Barcelona, especially with these hot and windy track conditions,” he said.

“It was one of the toughest Fridays I can remember. Leave aside the reliability issues, we were struggling a lot for pace, and this track is exposing the main key weaknesses of this car. We can get thereabouts in the fight for Q1, Q2, but then we are really far [away].”

Coulthard: Sainz ‘definitely eyeballing’ F1 future away from Williams
19/06/2026
Michael Delaney
F1i.com

When Carlos Sainz signed for Williams, it was billed as a bold leap of faith – a proven race winner betting on one of Formula 1’s most famous names rediscovering its former glory. But over a year later, that gamble is facing its first major test. While discussing Williams' difficult season on a recent Up To Speed podcast, the 13-time Grand Prix winner David Coulthard suggested that Sainz could already be considering where his next opportunity might come from.

"You can see the frustration for the drivers, visibly, I guess a bit more for Alex, who has now just celebrated being the most racy driver for Williams - that probably doesn't make sense in English. I am Scottish after all,” Coulthard said. “He's done more grands prix than any other driver for the Williams team. So he's embedded in that team. He's part of the DNA and has consistently delivered.”

“So, I guess his frustration level will be higher than Carlos, who, let's be frank, he's definitely eyeballing where his next opportunity lies because he's gone from Ferrari winning grands prix to Williams being happy scoring points. He wants to be back there again. And that journey for Williams is going to take a few years. So, I think we've got to give credit for the progress, but of course, it's Williams and that name in itself, we expect more."

According to Sainz, the FW48's general lack of downforce remains an area in need of improvement, with Williams requiring a considerable step forward in performance. In the 31-year-old's view, Barcelona highlighted just how far behind Williams remains on medium-speed circuits, something the team must address.

"I think, realistically speaking, we expected it to be hard," Sainz told select media, including RacingNews365. "Looking back on it, I think it's been a bit more of a shock how far off we are in medium and high-speed corners, partly due to weight, but even more importantly, due to the downforce we have on the car.”

I wouldn't call it a shock, not even a wake-up call, because we knew it, but it has been a realisation that we are very far from where we should be, where we targeted to be, or where we want to be. Sainz sends blunt message to Williams as speculation over exit builds
18 Jun 2026
Mat Coch
PlanetF1.com

Carlos Sainz has called on Williams to “do more” as the team continues to struggle in the midfield battle amid mounting speculation that he is questioning his long-term future at the squad. Both Sainz and Alex Albon struggled at the sweeping Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, an event the team predicted would expose the frailties of the FW48. Sainz could do no better than 12th, two laps down, while a bizarre camera housing issue saw Albon’s race transformed into a test session; 11 laps down at the chequered flag, he was not officially classified as a finisher.

Sainz joined Williams as the team looks to rebuild itself into a winning team once again, with the F1 2026 season flagged as something of a relaunch for the once championship-winning operation. After seven rounds, it sits eighth in the teams’ competition with 11 points, and a best result of eighth in Monaco.

Multiple sources have told PlanetF1.com that the situation has left Sainz questioning his future with the squad, with the Spaniard said to be eyeing up Audi as an option – the option that he didn’t choose two years ago. However, with Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto under contract for F1 2027, that door is currently closed.

Pierre Gasly Was Left Heartbroken at Monaco. Days Later, Alpine Won His Podium Back.
Monaco in 2026 was a strange afternoon for the stewards. There were more pit-lane speeding penalties handed out in that single race than some seasons produce in their entirety. Driver after driver was flagged for the same offence, and Gasly was among the names caught in the net.
22 June 2026
Jack Renn

• Pierre Gasly crossed the line third at the Monaco Grand Prix, then lost the podium to two pit-lane speeding penalties that he called the hardest blow of his career.
• Alpine launched a Right of Review, argued the speed calculation was flawed, and the stewards rescinded both penalties to hand Gasly back his third place.
• The Frenchman has become the emotional anchor of an Alpine team rebuilding for a long project, carrying the bulk of the load while the results stay thin.

For about an hour after the Monaco Grand Prix, Pierre Gasly had everything and nothing. He had driven one of the drives of his life around the most unforgiving circuit on the calendar, brought the Alpine home in the top three, and then watched it slip through his fingers in the cold language of a stewards’ bulletin. Two separate five-second penalties for speeding in the pit lane were added to his race time. The podium became seventh.

A result that should have been the high point of a difficult season turned, in a few sentences, into what Gasly described as the hardest day he has had in Formula 1. What happened next is the part that makes this a story worth telling. Alpine did not accept it. The team went to work, built a case, and days later the stewards gave Gasly his podium back.

Mercedes, Red Bull, McLaren receive outside support as Gasly row sparks ‘mess’
18 Jun 2026
Michelle Foster
PlanetF1.com

James Vowles has backed Mercedes, McLaren and Red Bull’s attempts to overturn Pierre Gasly’s restored Monaco podium. The Williams team principal has warned that Formula 1 is now facing a “mess” of its own making. Four teams were penalised for speeding in the pit lane at the Monaco Grand Prix, but while Lewis Hamilton, George Russell and Oscar Piastri served their penalties during the race, Alpine decided not to pit.

That opened the door for the team to lodge a Right of Review, which it did for Gasly’s two penalties. The Frenchman had crossed in third place before his two five-second penalties dropped him to seventh, elevating Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar onto the podium. Alpine was successful in its appeal, as a key detail emerged that Formula One Management’s measurement of a timing loop in the pit lane was incorrect. Gasly was reinstated into third.

James Vowles: “I’m surprised we have the reinstatement [of Gasly’s podium], but being frank, it doesn’t really affect us, but I think it creates a bit of a mess now. What do you do with George? What do you do with Piastri, who, in those circumstances, should have been on the podium as a result? That’s the mess I don’t feel comfortable about.”

"While we fully respect the FIA’s judicial processes and the role of the Stewards, we believe this case raises important questions concerning sporting fairness, regulatory consistency and the integrity of competition.”

"Throughout the Monaco Grand Prix weekend - and in every event - all teams operated according to the regulations and established standard practices for what concerns the speed limit in the pit lane as they were applied at the time. Competitors adjusted their procedures accordingly and, where required, accepted and served penalties imposed under those regulations.”
"In our view, the subsequent removal of penalties creates a situation in which some competitors are disadvantaged by having acted in accordance with the rules and the Stewards’ decisions. Such an outcome risks creating sporting inequity and undermining confidence in the consistent application of the FIA Sporting Regulations.”

"Our decision to appeal is not directed at any competitor. Rather, it reflects our belief that the championship benefits from regulations that are applied consistently, transparently and fairly to all participants. McLaren remains committed to working constructively with the FIA, Formula One and fellow competitors to protect the integrity of the sport and maintain confidence in its regulatory framework."

Red Bull explains reasons for appealing lost Monaco F1 podium
16 Jun 2026
Anirban Aly Mandal
Motorsport Week

Motorsport Week understands that Red Bull have decided to now lodge their intention to appeal this decision [with PlanetF1 reporting they have duly done so] which Mekies insists is for a bigger reason than to just seek justice for Hadjar. “We have not yet submitted the full appeal. We have a bit of time for that,” he said.

“But we think it’s more so a matter of principle for the goodness of the sport, in order for the sport to get the right clarity on how we go about non-appealable penalties during the race, and getting the right results at the end of the race. No measurement system is perfect on us. There is not one single way to measure the speed, and they are all wrong,” Mekies explained. “However, we have been working with that measurement system for a very high number of years.”

“It was the same than the day before, to same than on Friday, to same than the previous years, and we have all adapted to it, and 17 or 18 cars have managed to be legal. So we just need to make sure that as a sport we have a solid enough approach, so that moving forward we get the right clarity to the fans and to the competitors.”

Red Bull joins McLaren in lodging appeal after Gasly reclaims Monaco P3 from Hadjar

Red Bull Racing has also joined McLaren in formally lodging a notification of appeal with the FIA International Court of Appeal after the penalties Pierre Gasly originally received were removed following the Monaco Grand Prix, GPblog understands. The Austrian team's main concerns with the decision are the sporting implications and the potential consequences arising from this decision, this website has learned.

Gasly originally crossed the line in third place at the Monaco Grand Prix, but dropped to seventh after a 10-second time penalty was applied. As a result, Isack Hadjar was provisionally promoted to the podium and celebrated alongside Kimi Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton. However, following Alpine's successful Right of Review, Gasly's penalties were overturned and he was reinstated to third place. That also meant Hadjar was denied what would have been his first podium for the Austrian team. The two teams are now in contact about arranging the transfer of the third-place trophy.

F1 engine games have immediately become absurd.
The complexity of Formula 1 is simultaneously its great appeal and the source of its most risible absurdities. The ADUO process is an example of the latter, reducing the participants to unseemly squabbles about who has done a worse job with their V6 engines.
22 Jun 2026
EDD STRAW
The Race

ADUO - or 'additional development and upgrade opportunities' to the less acronymically adept - is a well-intentioned mechanism, but one that proves hell is paved with good intentions. The rationale is that the focal point of the competitive battle between power unit manufacturers would lie in the electrical components, with the V6 itself more a functional necessity than a performance differentiator. ADUO exists to allow anyone who dropped the ball to catch up rather than being eternally uncompetitive. So far, so logical. The trouble is that these are F1 teams that you are dealing with, finely-honed competitive machines that will find every avenue you could imagine - and a good deal more that you can't - in search of an edge.

While battery efficiency can vary and the software side is influential, the power of the MGU-K is locked at 350kW and harvesting levels regulated - and they will make a mockery of it. It was therefore inevitable that the V6 engines would allow for greater variation than intended. That's exposed one fundamental flaw of the regulations. The next weakness is how limited ADUO is. It's bizarre that it is such a narrow metric given the FIA has visibility of so many other characteristics. Even if you could measure the power output with precision (and that's a matter that's up for debate given the differences of opinion between competitors) you're offering a one-dimensional answer to a three-dimensional problem given the myriad interacting factors that shape performance.

Tempting as it is to blame the FIA entirely for an ADUO system that isn't fit for purpose, and it bears some responsibility, it's also clear that the car companies and their representatives now at the forefront of complaining about it and telling the world how bad their own products are played a significant role. ADUO is a headache F1 is stuck with, one that will flare up multiple times a year and create a baffling public narrative that's all about arguing your own product is not as good as it should be. If the Red Bull Powertrains V6 really is the best - and it's impossible to say with certainty where it stands - then immense credit is deserved. Instead, it has become a bad thing. If it's not the best, then the whole process is conclusively flawed even before you consider that the Red Bull-Ford power unit as a whole is objectively not the market leader.

Damon Hill declares ADUO gamesmanship as Red Bull named best engine
23 Jun 2026
Jamie Woodhouse
PlanetF1.com

Ahead of the announcement, Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies was asked about potential ADUO games being played by the manufacturers. Claims swirled that Mercedes was not running its engine at full power, and table-turning said rivals were doing the same to widen the gap. Mercedes had taken every F1 2026 grand prix win on offer ahead of the Barcelona GP. “So, now you’re asking us to enter into the game?” Mekies replied. “No, seriously, the way we look at it, I can only give you what we think is a pecking order. Do whatever you like with it.” Red Bull’s pecking order had Mercedes as the benchmark.

Addressing the ADUO situation via ‘The Undercut with Damon Hill and Mark Hughes’ podcast, Hill said: “It is quite interesting that we’re now getting people gaming the system, it seems. We believe that some teams may have more power than they’re showing, because they know they’re going to be penalised at a date with the ADUO development opportunity. So they’re going, ‘Well, I’m not going to show you what I’ve got until you’ve brought in the changes, and then after that, I’ll take the cape off and reveal my true identity.'”

Ex-F1 champion suggests teams could be "gaming" ADUO system after Red Bull engine deemed strongest

GPblog.com

Damon Hill has suggested that Formula One teams could be "gaming the system" when it comes to the FIA's ADUO initiative, after Red Bull were deemed to have the strongest internal combustion engine. Red Bull remains in the dark over whether its internal combustion engine will still be considered Formula 1's strongest following a second review by the FIA. It comes after Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies stated that the FIA must be certain that Red Bull Ford indeed has the strongest internal combustion engine.

There has been some confusion why they are deemed to have the stronger engine than Mercedes, despite chasing the dominant team on the 2026 F1 grid. Damon Hill suggests teams could be hiding power. Addressing the ADUO situation via ‘The Undercut with Damon Hill and Mark Hughes’ podcast, Hill, without mentioning teams, said:

"It is quite interesting that we’re now getting people gaming the system, it seems. Red Bull seeks urgent clarity over FIA ADUO decision
19 Jun 2026
James Phillips
Motorsport Week

Red Bull Racing CEO and Team Principal Laurent Mekies confirmed that while it agrees with the methodology to decide this, it disagrees it has an advantage over Mercedes. “We are completely okay with the fact that the rule states that you should only try to estimate the pecking order of the ICE power,” Mekies told media including Motorsport Week.

“We are completely okay with that, we have all agreed to that, and we don’t think that is the issue. Where we certainly would like to have a deeper conversation is because we do not see one single data sample that indicates that we would have an advantage over our friends at Mercedes. You will need to have extreme certainty in the way you are assessing the ICE pecking order in order to have the right confidence to give it to the dominant team and not to the team that is chasing the dominant team.”

“Especially when you get relative performance variations from track layout to track layout that are perfectly consistent with ICE power sensitivity. So you go to Canada, high ICE power sensitivity, we qualified sixth. You go to Monaco, low ICE power sensitivity, we qualify pretty much around four hundrethds from pole. You go to Barcelona, high again ICE power sensitivity, you qualify sixth again. We do not see one single data sample where we estimate ourselves higher than the competition, let alone being consistently above them.”

Red Bull challenges FIA’s ADUO verdict: ‘Where’s the evidence?’

The stakes are significant. If the FIA's ranking remains unchanged, rival manufacturers could receive additional development opportunities while Red Bull remains locked out, potentially creating a competitive disadvantage that could extend well beyond the current season. That is precisely why Red Bull team boss Laurent Mekies believes the governing body must be absolutely certain before finalising its assessment.

Red Bull insists no data supports FIA's ADUO claim over Ford engine
Red Bull says there is no evidence that supports the FIA's claims that its Ford engine is the best
15 Jun 2026
Adam Cooper
Crash.Net

Red Bull is adamant there is no evidence that Ford is currently the strongest Formula 1 engine, contrary to the FIA decision that declared it the benchmark for the ADUO upgrade system. Teams were told in Monaco that the Red Bull Ford was the strongest ICE, thus allowing Mercedes and the other manufacturers to benefit from ADUO.

However, Red Bull subsequently challenged those findings, and the FIA has agreed to go through the data once again in order to check the results. Laurent Mekies stressed that Red Bull has no issue with the way the system works, and especially the focus on the V6 rather than the electrical contribution.

Mekies indicated that the relative performance of the teams and PUs changes between circuits. "You will need to have extreme certainty in the way you are assessing the ICE pecking order in order to have the right confidence to give it to the dominant team, and not to the team that is chasing the dominant team,” he said.

Lewis Hamilton backed for title charge after Ferrari breakthrough.
Former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer has backed Lewis Hamilton to mount a title challenge against Mercedes following his victory in Barcelona earlier this month.
24 June 2026
Fergal Walsh
RacingNews365

Lewis Hamilton took to the top step of the podium last time out at the Barcelona Grand Prix, the first time he did so for Ferrari. When asked if he believes Hamilton can mount a challenge, Palmer told the F1 Nation podcast: “I don't see why he can't at this stage.”

“He's consistent. The Ferrari car is improving quite well. The upgrades working in Barcelona, obviously sent him towards the wind. Without that, they're not competitive enough. But as the season's going on, you look at Melbourne to Japan to Miami, all the way through, you're seeing what was a massive gulf between Mercedes and the field come down.”

“Whether that's McLaren fighting, whether it's Verstappen starting on the front row for a couple of races, whether it's now Ferrari with Lewis back on form being able to win a race and put a strategy together.”
“Track[-wise] certainly Austria more than you'd say on paper for Ferrari. But the season is long, and there's only 41 points now between Hamilton and Antonelli.”

Bottas suggests key factor in Hamilton’s Ferrari resurgence

Having spent five seasons alongside Hamilton at Mercedes, former Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas has had a front-row seat to the Briton’s strengths and understands how small details can influence performance at the highest level. “Naturally, people are happier the better the racing goes on the track, and he is in a good place which is good to see,” the Finn said, reflecting on his former teammate’s success.

“I think he has shown that he hasn’t lost any of his ability to do great qualifyings and great races. Yeah, maybe this type of car is a bit different to in the past. Maybe it is the first car that has a bit of his DNA in it. Those small things can make a big difference because in the end, in this sport, we are talking about such fine margins. But it’s good to see.”

Former rival and 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg: “I can honestly enjoy it with him. And I just congratulated him. I was very happy to congratulate him because it's awesome,” Rosberg told Sky F1 after the race. “I really felt for the struggles he went through as he started his time with Ferrari. It was horrible to watch. And now he's just thriving so well and flying, and confident, and enjoying it, and that's just awesome. This win is historic. It's spectacular. So, a great day for him, for the sport.”

Lewis Hamilton hints at possible Ferrari changes in Mercedes title pursuit
Lewis Hamilton has a sniff of the 2026 world championship - but Ferrari is going to have to work harder to overhaul Mercedes.
23 June 2026
Jake Nichol
RacingNews365

Well, honestly, with the way that the year started out, I have not really been thinking about it like that. I’ve not been thinking about an eighth," Hamilton told media, including RacingNews365. "Of course, what we had worked towards has been being able to win, but I’ve always been conscious of the fact that it takes time. Mercedes has come out of the gates with a blistering car and blistering pace, both drivers doing such a great job. We know we have this power deficit. There are going to be tracks where we go to with long, long straights where that makes it even harder.”

"But we’ve got a great car at the core, and if we keep adding performance and we can go through the corners quicker, maybe we can narrow that deficit down a little bit until we improve or until we close the gap on power. It is very, very hard to think long-term at the moment. I think it’s just about taking it one race at a time, one week at a time.”

“I’ll be at the factory [before Austria]; we’ll do a download; we’ll speak to the aerodynamicists, looking at all the different things that are in the pipeline, when they’re coming, what effect they’ll have, and re-steer if I need to in whatever direction I feel that the car needs to go. We'll just keep pushing and enjoying it. We have to just have fun with it as well."

Ferrari insider claims Lewis Hamilton could write ‘Michael story’

Jamie Woodhouse
PlanetF1.com

Former Ferrari engineer Rob Smedley remains in contact with his former colleagues, and said that “they’re all over the moon” with Lewis Hamilton. “He puts so much effort in,” Smedley said of Hamilton on the High Performance Racing podcast. Smedley was a part of Ferrari between 2004-13. “People always misunderstand Lewis because of the shell that he’s created around himself of his public persona,” Smedley continued.

“But this is a guy that, all the guys, funnily enough, Max [Verstappen], Lewis, Michael [Schumacher], Sebastian [Vettel], all of those guys who are greats, they work harder and put more of themselves into it to get to the positions that they’re in. And when you put yourself into anything, especially winning a grand prix, when you put all of yourself into it and you keep failing, but you keep coming back, and you keep trying, then eventually when it happens, it’s just like an outpouring of emotions.”

Smedley revealed that he is “on lots of chat groups with all of my old colleagues, and they’re all over the moon with Lewis.” Asked what his former colleagues are saying about Hamilton in these group chats, Smedley said: “They just love him. We talked about this [on the podcast], this could be a Michael story.”

Montoya signals race that could define Hamilton’s Ferrari title challenge
23 Jun 2026
Samson Ero
GPblog.com

Juan Pablo Montoya has identified a race he believes could provide clarity on whether Lewis Hamilton is truly in the title fight ahead of the upcoming Austrian Grand Prix. “Lewis Hamilton’s win has broken the perception that Mercedes is unbeatable,” Montoya explained. “People are excited because somebody threatened Mercedes. There is another dimension now. Now you also have the old guy who everyone thought was finished making waves again in the Ferrari,” he added.

The 50-year-old, when subsequently quizzed about the possibility of Hamilton mounting a title charge, noted how wide the gap to Antonelli remains, before highlighting how he expects the title picture to be much clearer come the Belgian Grand Prix. Montoya, however, was quick to flag concerns over the Ferrari power unit, something he believes could be a deciding factor in how the campaign unfolds.

“We need to wait for Spa to get a clearer picture,” he said. “At the moment, the reliability of the Ferrari is for sure better. But they know they’re down on power,” he concluded.

Future of Lewis Hamilton’s F1 race engineer Carlo Santi confirmed by Ferrari
Carlo Santi is set to remain as Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari race engineer.

Lewis Larkam
Crash.Net

Carlo Santi is expected to remain as Lewis Hamilton’s Formula 1 race engineer at Ferrari. Santi was initially brought in to be a stop-gap solution on a temporary basis while Ferrari looked for a new full-time race engineer for Hamilton this season. Hamilton heaped glowing praise on the 52-year-old Italian following his maiden triumph in red last time out in Spain.

"It was great to have him up there [on the podium]," Hamilton said of Santi. "I think, you know, him kind of substituting this year, jumping in and diving in deep with me, we didn't know each other, we'd never spoken and I didn't know anything about him. And we met and I think got on straight away - it's great to be able to connect with an engineer other than what I used to have. You know, I had it for such a long time and then you kind of lose that feeling because Bono's now doing it with Kimi [Antonelli].”

"It's really great to be able to share that experience with him on that stage, and also probably, like, he's very, very quiet. You could tell it's hard for him to express his emotions. He's just smiley and, you know, I'm giving him these big hugs and pulling him in, saying thank you. I like to think that this has probably reignited the love that he has as being an engineer as he has done for me as a driver.” Santi previously worked with Kimi Raikkonen and engineered the 2007 world champion to (Ferraris) 21st and final F1 victory at the 2018 United States Grand Prix.

Unsurprisingly, the Dutchman is excited to be back. "Austria is of course a home Grand Prix for the Team," Verstappen said. "It's been a great track for me in the past, and we have had really good memories there. It's a very interesting track, and all of the corners are quite different, so it's really important to get a good balance out of the car,” he added.

“You need both high-speed and low-speed performance, good traction, and now, with how energy-sensitive some tracks are, it is important to work to get on top of this. We have a new package we are bringing, so it is exciting to see how much this could look to give us in lap time. Max Verstappen is set to continue talks this weekend at the Austrian Grand Prix as Red Bull seek a resolution over his F1 future. Verstappen currently has a deal in place until the 2028 season, however, performance-related exit clauses have left his whereabouts beyond the current season in doubt.

Ferrari has confirmed that it will introduce its first power unit upgrade at this weekend's Austrian Grand Prix, while Charles Leclerc will sit out first practice. The Scuderia is set to use its first Additional Development Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) token to upgrade its internal combustion engine at the Red Bull Ring.

Where Ferrari stands ahead of highly anticipated engine upgrade
25 Jun 2026
ROSARIO GIULIANA
The Race

Following confidential communications from the FIA between the Miami and Monaco Grands Prix regarding engine performance measurements across the field, Ferrari received confirmation that it qualifies for two in-season engine development tokens. According to information gathered by The Race, the performance deficit assessed by the FIA places Ferrari within a window believed to be between 6% and 8% off the benchmark, deemed to be Red Bull, granting Maranello additional development opportunities.

The significance of this goes beyond the two upgrade tokens themselves. Ferrari is also entitled to additional dyno hours and extra development budget, resources that can now be directed towards a more comprehensive engine evolution planned either immediately before or shortly after the summer break. The exact timing has not yet been finalised, as Ferrari now has greater flexibility to maximise the development programme following confirmation of the available concessions.

The specification introduced in Austria, internally referred to as "ICE ADUO 1", represents a different approach. Rather than spending both development tokens together later in the season, Ferrari has chosen to introduce an initial upgrade that has been under development since the winter months, while preserving scope for a more significant evolution later on. The revised combustion engine specification will also be accompanied by an updated Shell biofuel blend. The package will be introduced alongside Ferrari's third power unit allocation of the season, still within the four units permitted before grid penalties are triggered.

Ferrari downplays effect of 'minor' power unit update for the Austrian Grand Prix

Ferrari is set to introduce an updated version of its power unit at the Austrian Grand Prix following Lewis Hamilton’s victory in Barcelona. However, the Italian team underlined that the change is only a minor update. Looking ahead to next weekend, Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur stressed that the team is approaching the championship one race at a time.

He said: "We arrive in Austria encouraged by our positive showing over the past few races, even though we are fully aware that there is still a lot of work to do and that we must continue to focus on ourselves. We will approach this weekend with the same method and mindset that we have adopted since the start of the season aiming to put together clean sessions in every respect, from track execution to the strategic decisions taken on the pit wall. We know that every weekend has a different story to tell which is why we will continue to take the championship one race at a time."

Austrian GP predictions: Hamilton title talk silenced, Mercedes engine disaster, Leclerc revival
25 Jun 2026
Editor
PlanetF1.com

Talk of a Lewis Hamilton world title to go silent - By Michelle Foster: Do you hear that? No? Nothing…? That’s because all the talk post-Barcelona about Lewis Hamilton winning the world title will go quiet come Sunday afternoon in Austria. Hamilton’s victory at the Barcelona Grand Prix was a momentous occasion as it showed the world, and perhaps Hamilton as well, that he can still win if – and it’s a big if – the chips fall in his favour. But after two weeks of listening to every pundit and former driver with a podcast saying Hamilton is the fight for the world title and that Ferrari should ‘wingman’ Charles Leclerc to back the Briton, those voices will go silent on Sunday.

At least three Mercedes-powered cars to retire - By Oliver Harden: How will the Mercedes power unit fare in a European heatwave? That is perhaps the key question entering this weekend. With Merc cars suffering a cluster of reliability problems over recent races – most recently Kimi Antonelli’s stoppage in the closing laps in Barcelona – HPP may be looking ahead to this weekend with some trepidation. There is every chance that reliability will shape this year’s title battle between Antonelli and George Russell, whose battery suffered heat damage in his retirement at a relatively cool Canada.

F1 - 2026 Austrian Grand Prix - Thursday Press Conference Transcript.
Isack HADJAR (Red Bull), Oscar PIASTRI (McLaren), Pierre GASLY (Alpine), Nico HÜLKENBERG (Audi), George RUSSELL (Mercedes), Sergio PÉREZ (Cadillac).
25.06.26
FIA (Press Release)

Q: Oscar, let’s stay with you and can we talk about the McLaren? You didn’t look too comfortable last time out in Barcelona. Do you have reasons to be bullish about the car here, a track at which McLaren has got a pretty good record?
Oscar PIASTRI: I think on a personal level, yes, I’ve got a good understanding. We’ve done a lot of homework as to why the race in Barcelona was such a struggle for me. I think we’ve got a good idea why and a good plan on how to not repeat that. I think for us as a team here, you know, Ferrari took a good step forward in Barcelona, Mercedes is still the benchmark as well, and I’m hearing along the grapevine that Red Bull have got some big things as well. So, it’s not going to be easy for us. Yes, it has been a good track for us in the past, but there’s no illusion for us that we’re suddenly going to be amazing here and the team to beat. We’re definitely not going to be.

Q: Pierre, let’s come back to you. This is the best start to a season you’ve ever had. Just how much potential does this car have?
Pierre GASLY: Well, yeah, I must say that the team so far has done a good job in terms of reliability. They’ve really been faultless so far. I think the car performance, we’ve seen from the start of the year, we seem to be able to fight in the points pretty much consistently every weekend. The midfield is kind of swinging one way or another depending on the weekend, depending on the track. Sometimes we’re slightly closer to the top four. At the start of the year, now we kind of dropped slightly. The last few weekends have been slightly more complicated but we’re still there and we’ve been very consistent.

Q: What’s causing the fluctuation from one race to the next?
Isack HADJAR: Well, that’s what we are trying to figure out. It’s complicated. To make it clear, it’s not human error on my side, that’s for sure. I think the procedure is simple and I know how to achieve it. It’s just deeper issues. I told the guys it’s the main point to focus on the last week since Barcelona. It’s not the only thing, but they’ve been focusing very hard on it. Let’s see from FP1 how I feel, but in Barcelona the whole weekend, every time I dropped the clutch, it was going nowhere and it was like that the whole time. So let’s see how we did the last couple of days to try and understand and see if we apply it.

Q: George, if we could perhaps start with you. Toto referred to the recent Spanish Grand Prix as a reality check for Mercedes. Even with your pole position, what’s your view on that race weekend and the performance of the car?
George RUSSELL: Yeah, I definitely think it’s a reality check because Ferrari have clearly had a great chassis this whole season. Their power unit has been a bit behind us, quite a bit behind us, but suddenly in Barcelona they seem to have made a step forward. So, they were much closer to us in terms of their straight-line speed and, you know, they’re bringing a lot of upgrades, which has been quite surprising for us. You know, we’ve brought one upgrade this season so far. We’ve got some in the pipeline, but Ferrari and McLaren, every couple of races, are bringing bits to the car. So, you know, we need to keep on pushing and I think every time a team is bringing a new bit to the car, they’re making big steps forward.

Q: Nico, can we come to you now? Amid all the frustration of what happened in Monaco and Barcelona, what positives can you take from those races?
Nico HULKENBERG: I think just all in all, we’re making progress. The performance, you know, is there. We are competitive in the midfield and, you know, I feel both in Monaco and Barcelona, we were able to put it into the top 10 on merit. But yeah, both race weekends had circumstances that denied results on Sunday. I think, you know, I feel also on Sunday in Barcelona, we made life slightly difficult and hard for ourselves, but there are definitely positive signs. The car, if I compare it now to how it felt the first two, three races to where we are now, there’s definitely some good progress there. I think it’s just a matter of time and a matter of us putting it together and staying clean and staying focused.

Q: Checo, coming to you. Big weekend for the team here. You’ve got a substantial upgrade package. What are your hopes?
Sergio PÉREZ: Yeah, we definitely want to make good progress. You know, we can see that we are getting closer towards the midfield, especially over a lap. I think still we are lacking quite a bit on the degradation side with the tyres. We are bringing an upgrade here that hopefully can get us even closer. Once we are there, you know, it’s all coming down to the little details. I think operationally the team has been improving quite a lot, making really big steps so far. So yeah, hopefully this upgrade can put us a lot closer.

Pirelli expects one stop strategies at the Austrian Grand Prix despite heat and soft compounds
25 Jun 2026
Balazs Szabo
F1 Technical

What does the past reveal about potential strategies? In 2025, most teams opted for two stops, with Soft and Medium tyres the preferred starting choices and the Hard compound used primarily for middle stints. This year, however, the tyre supplier expects the more robust behaviour of the compounds to open the door to longer stints, especially if track temperatures remain stable. High temperatures could push teams toward more conservative tyre management, while cooler spells or cloud cover may extend stint lengths and reinforce the one stop trend.

As teams prepare for another high intensity weekend in Spielberg, Pirelli’s early analysis suggests that tyre management will be less about wear and more about controlling temperatures and maintaining balance in the thin Alpine air. If conditions remain stable, a one stop race could become the strategic baseline—though, as always at the Red Bull Ring, the combination of short lap times, unpredictable weather and tight midfield gaps ensures that flexibility will be just as important as outright pace.

FIA declares heat hazard for Austrian Grand Prix
The FIA has activated Formula 1’s heat hazard rules for this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix as Europe’s heatwave pushes temperatures at Spielberg into the thirties.
26 Jun 2026
Ben Waterworth
Speedcafe

“In accordance with Article B1.5.10 of the FIA F1 Regulations, having received a forecast from the Official Weather Service predicting that the Heat Index will be greater than 31.0°C at some time during the Race at this Competition, a Heat Hazard is declared,” read a note from FIA F1 Race Director Rui Marques to teams. The ruling means teams must fit driver cooling systems to their cars for the Austrian Grand Prix weekend.

The system can feed cooled fluid through a fireproof vest worn beneath a driver’s race suit, though the vest itself remains optional. Drivers who choose not to wear the vest must instead carry 0.5kg of ballast in the cockpit to offset the weight difference.

The heat hazard rule was introduced after the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix, where several drivers suffered in extreme conditions and required medical attention after the race. Austria is the first race of the 2026 season to be placed under the heat hazard designation, with Singapore and the United States running under the same rule last season.

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli has revealed that he and George Russell will now be subject to team orders from Mercedes under one condition. "There was a meeting on the matter, and Toto was very clear," Kimi Antonelli said during an interview with Italian media, as quoted by Motorsport.com.

"If we find ourselves in a situation like Barcelona again, under pressure from our rivals, there will be a team order, especially if one of the two cars is showing better pace. If, on the other hand, we’re fighting each other without pressure from another team, we’ll be free to race, just as we were in Montreal."

McLaren's Oscar Piastri set the third-quickest time, 0.117 slower than 19-year-old Italian Antonelli, ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen (+0.281) and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton (+0.665). Racing Bulls' rookie Arvid Lindblad was sixth, with McLaren's Lando Norris seventh.

Red Bull, at their home circuit, had a difficult start with Verstappen suffering issues with his upgraded car while teammate Isack Hadjar's car needed a hurried engine change and he missed the first 35 minutes. Four-time world champion Verstappen complained that "the whole car is shaking under braking".

"At first we had an engine issue on Isack's car before the beginning of the session, so we had to do a very late call to change his engine," said team boss Laurent Mekies. "And then on Max, we also had a troubled start with a couple of software issues that got us stuck in the garage."

Max Verstappen and Lando Norris suffer early Austrian GP setback
A disastrous start to the opening practice session in Austria for multiple drivers.

As the session started, Norris' car was seen up on the lift with technicians studying the MCL60 after spotting an issue. McLaren communicated that it was investigating a possible hydraulic leak. It adds to the list of issues that Norris has suffered in the opening phase of the season.

He wasn't alone when it came to issues, however, as both Red Bull cars faced problems in the first minutes. Isack Hadjar's car was not ready for the start of the session, as the team continued to work on it as the practice timer started.

Verstappen, meanwhile, was heard stuttering as he peeled into the pit lane before quickly coming to a stop. He stated over the team radio that he was getting anti-stall every time he activated the clutch.

FP1 Report: What Happened in First Practice at the Austrian GP
26 June 2026
John Smith
Total Motorsport

Kimi Antonelli delivered the first statement of the 2026 Austrian GP weekend as Mercedes finished first and second in a scorching FP1 session at the Red Bull Ring, while Red Bull endured a difficult start to their home race. The opening practice hour began in brutal conditions, with air temperatures approaching 30 degrees Celsius and the track surface close to 50 degrees before climbing to 51 by the end of the session.

Red Bull lose crucial upgrade running. Red Bull arrived in Austria with one of the largest upgrade packages of the weekend, but their session was disrupted almost immediately. Verstappen stopped in the pit lane after reporting anti-stall issues, forcing the mechanics to push him back to the garage. The Dutchman later returned and was the first driver to run the soft tyre, but he complained the C5 rubber was overheating quickly and offering little feeling.

Isack Hadjar also lost early running with a suspected hydraulics issue before heading out late on the softs. His mood was clear over team radio as he told Red Bull: “I don’t understand the balance at all… It’s a mess.” That left Red Bull’s upgrades only partly assessed by the end of FP1, making the afternoon session more important for both cars.

The Race

Mercedes led the way in opening practice for the Austrian Grand Prix as defending Formula 1 champion Lando Norris and both Red Bull drivers missed out on significant track time. The Mercedes duo spent the majority of the session at the top of the times and it was championship leader Kimi Antonelli who ended up leading the way, setting a best time of 1m07.796s - around 2.2s off last year's best FP1 time.

George Russell was 0.040s off team-mate Antonelli on his own soft-tyre run midway through the session, suggesting the Mercedes might have a significant early advantage over its opposition at the Red Bull Ring. But two rivals did get closer in the latter stages of the session; Oscar Piastri ended up third, 0.117s off, with Max Verstappen also within three tenths of a second for Red Bull. The four-time champion's session was compromised early on by two failed attempts to leave the pitlane - Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies described these as software glitches - meaning it was 20 minutes before he took to the track.

It was another 10 minutes before the sister RB22 appeared, with Isack Hadjar delayed by an engine issue that Red Bull spotted prior to the session. He ended up 12th, 1.685s off the pace with 11 laps completed. Only Norris completed fewer laps - nine - in the session, as he was delayed by a hydraulic leak aboard his McLaren. Norris nevertheless ended the session in seventh, one second off the pace. Barcelona GP winner Lewis Hamilton was fifth, close to four tenths off Verstappen's time, as Ferrari began the weekend off the back of its 'big four' rivals. FP1 stand-in Dino Beganovic was ninth fastest in the second car.

Everything that happened in second Austrian GP F1 practice
26 Jun 2026
JACK BENYON
The Race

Formula 1 world championship leader Kimi Antonelli fought off a spirited challenge from the McLaren duo to top Austrian Grand Prix FP2 for Mercedes. Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris both took turns at the top of the order, but Antonelli was able to go top with half an hour to go on the softs and before the long runs dominated. His Mercedes team-mate George Russell lost the first eight minutes of the session in what looked like a scheduled tweak to the car, but one that was clearly delayed and ate into the start of the session. He was only sixth in recovery.

So Piastri went second, 0.237s behind Antonelli, with Norris having by far the most eventful session. Like others, he struggled at Turn 3, with a quite surprising-looking spin where he appeared to be hitting the apex but the rear snapped around early in the session. Then he went straight on during his long run towards the end of the session. He also went onto the gravel at Turn 8, perhaps impacted by how little running he got in FP1 due to technical issues.

At risk of writing this whole report about Norris, he was also told to cool the brakes after the session finished and replied he thought they'd "been on fire for like five laps, mate". If Norris had an eventful session, the Red Bull team appeared to be rivalling him for a reward in this area. First, Max Verstappen was forced to stop in the pits because his seating position was too laid back! He managed to get up to fourth in the order, but like team-mate Isack Hadjar, who slid dramatically, both cars were struggling with driveability at Turn 3. Verstappen mentioned the RPM dropping, specifically. Then, an unsighted Red Bull ran wide at the final corner in the long runs and lost some bodywork. Not helpful with a big new upgrade installed.

Impressive Kimi Antonelli leads McLarens as Cadillac catches fire in second F1 Austrian GP practice
Kimi Antonelli asserts himself at the top of the timesheet on Friday at the F1 Austrian Grand Prix.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli made the perfect start to the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix weekend by topping both of Friday’s practice sessions. F1 championship leader Antonelli was fastest by 0.237 seconds from McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, while reigning world champion Lando Norris took third, 0.325s down on the pace-setting Mercedes.

It was a tougher second practice for his Mercedes team-mate George Russell, who was only sixth-fastest and over six tenths down after a scruffy lap on soft tyres. Max Verstappen put his upgraded Red Bull fourth, 0.550s adrift of Antonelli’s benchmark time, and ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who was fifth for Ferrari, nearly six tenths down.

Behind Russell came the other Red Bull of Isack Hadjar and Charles Leclerc, who returned to the cockpit of his Ferrari after sitting out of FP1 so that Dino Beganovic could complete a mandatory rookie outing. Liam Lawson and Gabriel Bortoleto rounded out the top-10 for Racing Bulls and Audi respectively. It was another dramatic session for Cadillac, with Sergio Perez losing power and stopping on track for the second time on Friday, following a similar problem which saw the Mexican break down in FP1.

Antonelli tops FP2 in Austria to send strong message to under pressure teammate Russell
26 Jun 2026
Tobia Elia
GPblog.com

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli stole the spotlight once again after setting the fastest time in FP1 earlier today. The Italian also put six tenths between himself and teammate George Russell, who struggled to put together a clean lap. Here's a full recap of everything that happened during FP2 at the Austrian Grand Prix.

The opening minutes were marked by technical issues for Sergio Perez, who was forced to retire from the first session after just ten minutes, parking his Cadillac and triggering a Virtual Safety Car so the stranded car could be recovered. Max Verstappen also ran into trouble, albeit of a different kind, after complaining that his seat felt uncomfortable. He returned to the pits, where the Red Bull mechanics removed the seat to fix the issue.

Midway through the session, Cadillac ran into more trouble, this time with Valtteri Bottas. The Finn suddenly slowed during his lap, with his car visibly scraping along the track, but unlike his teammate, he at least managed to make it back to the pits. With just under half an hour remaining, the qualifying simulations got underway, with Oscar Piastri the first to bolt on the soft tyres and go quickest with a 1:07.251, four tenths faster than Antonelli. Lando Norris went second, finishing less than a tenth behind his teammate. Lewis Hamilton soon crossed the line as well, ending up three tenths adrift of the Australian.

Winners and losers from Austrian GP F1 practice 2026
26 Jun 2026
THE RACE TEAM
The Race

Loser: Red Bull (4th & 7th) - Red Bull debuted a brand-new upgrade package at the Austrian GP that it hoped would help it permanently leave its ‘fourth-best team’ island behind the top three. But the picture of how successful its upgrade has been was clouded by a number of issues (unrelated to the upgrade) that cost both Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar valuable track time.
Winner: Kimi Antonelli (1st) - It's clear there is no sign of a post-Barcelona GP hangover for Antonelli, who looks in no way, shape or form unsettled by those lost points.

Loser (maybe?): Ferrari (5th & 8th) - Fresh from its victory at the Barcelona Grand Prix that has reignited Formula 1’s title battle, and unleashing an ADUO-assisted engine upgrade, Ferrari had grabbed the attention in the build up to the Austria weekend.
Winner: McLaren (2nd & 3rd) - McLaren was a really good Antonelli lap away from topping FP2, looks decent in long runs, and appears to be a frontrunning contender again in Austria.
Loser: Cadillac (21st & 22nd) - Where to start?! The most upgraded car on the grid - at least in terms of what’s listed in the FIA sheet to start the weekend - went 13th with Valtteri Bottas in FP1, which is very, very encouraging indeed. But it went off a cliff from there. Perez stopped on track in both sessions with electrical problems and managed 16 laps total on the day.

Winner: Jak Crawford (20th in FP1) - FP1-only drivers can't be judged too harshly when they're off the pace - as there's always a chance that's down to run plan, or programme, or instructions. But when they're firmly on the pace, that's inevitably a lot easier to take at face value.
Loser: Williams (17th & 18th) - Williams is a contender for F1's 'loneliest' team on evidence of Austria practice - it should be well clear of Cadillac and Aston Martin, but looks outmatched by the rest of the midfield it strives to join.

Antonelli shoots to the top. However, Kimi Antonelli was on his first push lap of the session. The current championship leader is managing three purple sectors and has a comfortable 0.3-second gap to Norris in second. Antonelli’s teammate, George Russell, slipped in behind his teammate, but it was short-lived as Charles Leclerc crossed the line to go just 0.018s faster than Russell.

The field came into the pits for a mid-session tyre change. With ten minutes left in the session, Antonelli still sat out front of the grid with Lewis Hamilton and Russell marking the top three. Leclerc was down in seventh, struggling to find the pace on soft tyres that were six laps old. With just three minutes left in the session, he was seventh. 0.4s separated him from Antonelli. However, in the final two minutes, Russell took the top spot from his teammate. With a time of 1:07.096s, putting him 0.038s out front.

Austrian GP: P1 Russell question mark as Lewis Hamilton looms after FP3
27 Jun 2026
Jamie Woodhouse
PlanetF1.com

Kimi Antonelli thought he had done enough to make it a clean sweep of practice P1s, but George Russell struck late in FP3 at the Austrian Grand Prix. Kimi Antonelli set the pace across Friday practice. The championship leader went into FP3 looking to rubber-stamp that authority ahead of qualifying.

Lewis Hamilton emerged as the closest challenger to Mercedes, sitting just a tenth back going into what looks set to be a thrilling qualifying. Hamilton did, though, request a Ferrari gearbox check after a late FP3 off. Antonelli’s inability to nail a final lap on fresh softs, leaves question marks over the true pecking order of the Mercedes drivers.

Lando Norris was downbeat about McLaren’s pace going into the Austria race weekend, but his 1:07.832 on the softs was a decent opening effort. Lewis Hamilton, who slotted into second, was three and a half tenths back. Norris was quickly back in the garage for a left mirror repair, as Oscar Piastri made it a brief McLaren one-two. A trio of purple sectors put Antonelli P1 by three tenths.

F1 – Russell leads Mercedes one-two in final Austrian GP practice
27.06.26
FIA (Press Release)

George Russell set the pace in final practice for the 2026 FIA Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix, beating Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli by just 0.038s in a closely fought FP3 session at the Red Bull Ring. Antonelli had looked the benchmark for much of the hour, continuing the strong form he had shown across Friday’s running. The Italian was quickly to the fore, first moving ahead of the field with a lap of 1:07.533 before lowering the target to 1:07.134 on his opening set of soft tyres.

That effort appeared set to remain unbeaten as track temperatures climbed and several drivers struggled to improve on their second sets. However, Russell found more performance late in the session on a used set of softs, posting a 1:07.096 to move to the top of the order for the first time this weekend. Lewis Hamilton completed the top three for Ferrari, finishing 0.115s off Russell’s best, while McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris followed in fourth and fifth. Piastri improved on a second push lap to claim fourth, 0.248s from the front, with Norris just 0.016s further back.

Max Verstappen, who was the last driver to leave the garage, ended the session sixth for Red Bull, 0.273s down on Russell. Charles Leclerc was seventh for Ferrari after running wide during his late soft-tyre attempt, leaving him 0.356s adrift. Isack Hadjar placed eighth in the second Red Bull after early running on the hard tyre, recovering well after losing track time on Friday due to an engine change. Racing Bulls also showed encouraging pace, with Liam Lawson ninth and Arvid Lindblad 10th.

Following a late set-up to his W17, Russell produced a 1m07.096s to pip Antonelli, who had made an ominous start by topping both practice sessions on Friday, to the fastest time. After looking off the pace on Friday, Ferrari reduced its deficit to Mercedes in the final practice before a crucial qualifying session.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton ended up 0.115s adrift of Russell’s benchmark in his Ferrari, which has been fitted with the Italian team’s first ADUO-influenced engine upgrade for the Spielberg weekend. Oscar Piastri was once again the lead McLaren driver in fourth, 0.248s down as he narrowly outpaced team-mate and reigning world champion Lando Norris.

Max Verstappen put his upgraded Red bull sixth, under three tenths back, while Charles Leclerc was a couple tenths slower than Ferrari team-mate Hamilton as he took seventh. Eighth place went to the second Red Bull of Isack Hadjar, while the Racing Bulls pair of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad completed the top-10 in final practice.

Hamilton requests Ferrari check while emerging as Mercedes' biggest threat in Austria

Lewis Hamilton was once again the closest challenger to the two Mercedes drivers ahead of qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix. However, after his final attempt, he asked his team to check his gearbox.

Hamilton finished third during the final free practice session of the Austrian Grand Prix. The Briton finished around a tenth behind George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, but on two of his attempts, he experienced issues in Turn 3.

Over the radio, the Ferrari driver said: "I locked up in Turn 3, locked the rears. We need to check the gearbox. It said it was shifting but I was still in anti-stall." Hamilton's teammate, Charles Leclerc, also had similar issues in the same corner, where he locked up on multiple occasions as well. The Monegasque driver set only the seventh quickest time in today's first session.

George Russell pipped Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli with a late lap to lead the final practice session ahead of qualifying at Formula 1’s Austrian Grand Prix. Antonelli led the majority of FP3 as he set a 1m07.134s just past the halfway point of the session, a time he couldn’t beat on either of his subsequent runs.

But Russell did best Antonelli on his final flying lap in the session with a particularly strong final sector that gave him a 1m07.096s. That was still marginally slower than Antonelli’s FP2 benchmark from Friday, but was 0.038s quicker than Antonelli’s best Saturday lap. Lewis Hamilton was third on a stronger day for Ferrari with its upgraded engine. He was 0.115s off the pace.

The McLarens of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris were fourth and fifth. Max Verstappen followed them in the upgraded Red Bull, but had to battle annoying radio interference problems throughout the session in his RB22. He was 0.273s off Antonelli’s benchmark, with Charles Leclerc in seventh, 0.356s off the pace. Verstappen’s team-mate Isack Hadjar struggled to get near Verstappen’s pace and ended up just ahead of the Racing Bulls, almost six tenths slower than Verstappen.

There was major confusion surrounding how Russell's lap was allowed to stand given that he improved after Verstappen went off and hit the barriers at Turn 9 in a heavy crash that led to yellow flags being waved at the final corners.

Russell was initially noted for a yellow flag infringement before being seemingly cleared of any wrongdoing when race control noted that the incident would not be investigated. As such, Russell and Mercedes started the celebrations after claiming a crucial pole at the Red Bull Ring.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff claimed Russell had a "massive lift" that cost him a tenth and a half in lap time, while Russell himself said he lifted for 100 metres at the final corner. Prior to Russell nicking pole, it appeared that Ferrari had locked out the front row of the grid, with Lewis Hamilton exchanging fastest laps at the end of qualifying.

F1 - 2026 Austrian Grand Prix Post-Qualifying Press Conference Transcript
27.06.26
FIA (Press Release)

Q: George Russell, great job, great lap. It’s still under investigation because of the yellow flag but how do you feel?
George RUSSELL: I feel incredible. It was such an amazing lap. I saw the yellow, I had a big lift into the corner. I was five tenths up and I came out the last corner two and a half tenths up, so it was a single yellow as well, not a double, so it should be OK. It was a tough day, but it was so special to get that lap and everything felt so sweet, so really proud of the job we all did.

Q: Charles. So, let us know, how was your lap? And especially in the last few Grands Prix Ferrari made a huge step forward on the development. Are you happy with your lap and your position?
Charles LECLERC: Yeah, I’m relatively happy about today. Of course, the last few weekends have been quite tough, so I just wanted to have a clean weekend and most of all clean qualifying to start well for tomorrow. So, to start second is a good place to start. The team have been pushing massively in order to bring upgrades in Barcelona and again this weekend, and that pays off. If I’m completely honest, I didn’t think we’ll be starting on the front row until qualifying really, so it’s a good surprise that we are so far.

Q: Lewis, you probably lost a good chance to improve your lap time because the first push lap you braked maybe too late. Do you think it was possible to be better than third?
Lewis HAMILTON: Yeah, well, firstly, thank you everyone for the good energy. No, I think to have the two Ferraris in second and third is fantastic, and it’s just a reflection of the amazing work that everyone’s doing back at the factory, because they really are continuing to push. We brought small bits here. Obviously, they worked hard to upgrade our engine for this track, so I’m just really proud of everybody because you could just see how hard everyone’s working. It’s really starting to pay off. I think my Q3, the weekend had been looking good. In Q3 run one, my mistake, and didn’t get the first lap, so then, yeah, that always affects the second lap. But nonetheless, even just to be still that close, given that I didn’t get the first lap, I’m really happy for that.

Russell: ‘Unbelievable’ Austrian GP pole lap came out of nowhere
27/06/2026
Michael Delaney
F1i.com

George Russell was not about to let a cloud of controversy hang over his Austrian Grand Prix pole position on Saturday in Spielberg. The Mercedes driver produced a stunning final qualifying lap at the Red Bull Ring to snatch top spot from Ferrari, but his achievement immediately came under scrutiny after he crossed a yellow flag zone while pushing for the fastest time of the session.

With Max Verstappen stranded in the barriers after crashing at Turn 9, questions quickly emerged over whether Russell’s pole-winning effort would survive the stewards’ attention. But the Briton was adamant that he had handled the situation correctly and insisted the circumstances did not require him to abandon his final charge. "I didn't even see the car because the runoff is so far," said Russell.

Russell’s 1m06.133s lap proved enough to deny Ferrari a front-row sweep, placing him ahead of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, with his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli in fourth. Yet the drama surrounding the final sector became the immediate talking point. "I think in that instance, a single yellow was correct, because a double yellow is immediate danger,” George Russell said. “You're never going to be lifting 100 meters before a corner or lifting off with a single yellow, you're never going to lose control of the car."

Mekies after Austrian GP qualifying: 'Apologise to Max'
27 June 2026
Niels Hendrix
Verstappen.nl

Laurent Mekies, team principal and CEO of Oracle Red Bull Racing, reflected on the Austrian Grand Prix qualifying and said: “The most important thing after this eventful qualifying session is that Max is okay. He delivered an excellent first run in Q3, and his final run was very fast until he lost the car in turn 9. The dynamic of the incident was quite unusual, and we lost aero performance on the rear of the car and it gave Max no chance to survive. As a team we take full responsibility for it and apologise to him.”

At Spielberg the RB22 received an upgrade. Mekies explained: “With any significant upgrade, it is never simply a case of plug-and-play. The real challenge is to understand the package, identify its optimum operating window and maximise its potential over the course of the weekend.”

“We are still learning but today was an encouraging first step. The improved pace we had demonstrated the progress we have made with the package we have brought to Austria. A huge thank you to everyone back at the factory. This large upgrade package, covering many aspects of the car and PU, is the result of the hard work across the entire team. Seeing that effort reflected in our competitiveness today is a well-deserved reward for everyone involved.”

Verstappen slams double yellow flags delay as "crazy" after Austria GP qualifying crash
28 Jun 2026
Kieran Lynch
GPblog.com

Max Verstappen has called it "crazy" that double yellow flags were not deployed sooner after his high-speed crash at one of the fastest sections of the Red Bull Ring during Austrian Grand Prix qualifying. The decision not to immediately put out double yellows as been criticised due to the Dutchman being in the wall at a high speed section of the track. Asked for his reaction on only single yellow flags being initially shown, Verstappen told GPblog among other media outlets: "I only heard about that now, that's quite crazy."

The decision has also been a talking point with other drivers, with championship leader Antonelli saying he "doesn't know why" a double yellow flag was not shown straight away. Polesitter Russell said a single yellow was "correct", adding: “The only reason Verstappen was in the wall that far away is because he was attacking and lost the car. I think the single yellow was correct." A single yellow flag was immediately shown after Verstappen lost control of his Red Bull and crashed out of qualifying. A single yellow flag requires a driver to lift off and exercise caution, while a double waved yellow means a driver must slow down significantly and be prepared to stop.

After the crash, race control took time to assess the level of danger to determine whether the situation needed to be upgraded to a double yellow or red flag. According to the FIA, the double yellow flag came 15 to 20 seconds after the crash, after the point of which both Mercedes drivers had gone past the scene of the accident. The Dutchman appeared to have made a driving error for his crash, but it later emerged that an issue with his active aerodynamics caused him to have the heavy crash, making it impossible for him to keep control of his Red Bull.

George Russell narrowly denies resurgent Max Verstappen in Austrian GP showdown.
George Russell survived persistent pressure from Max Verstappen at the Austrian Grand Prix to reclaim second in the F1 drivers' championship with a much-needed victory.

George Russell triumphed in a strategic game of chess at the Austrian Grand Prix, outlasting Max Verstappen by 1.6 seconds at the Red Bull Ring to claim his second win of the season, and his first since the curtain raiser in Melbourne. The opening phase of the 71-lap race in Spielberg was a frenetic affair with high entertainment on track, particularly between Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, before it settled into a tactical game of cat and mouse.

The Milton Keynes-based team pulled off a masterclass to get the Dutchman's RB22 into the fight for victory at its home race against the superior W17s of Russell and Kimi Antonelli, whilst Ferrari endured a difficult afternoon on the pit wall, which compounded a lack of pace. The young Italian rounded out the podium places, just falling short of bettering resurgent Red Bull at the line after closing in quickly in the dying moments.

Russell masters Austrian GP for second win of season
George Russell returned to the top step of the F1 podium for the first time in 113 days with a controlled victory at the Austrian Grand Prix.

The British driver led from pole and withstood a strong charge from Max Verstappen to win by 1.6s, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli completed the podium. Verstappen looked the most likely to challenge Russell throughout the afternoon, closing to within a second of the Mercedes in the middle phase of the race.

But Russell ultimately had the pace and strategy to maintain control, taking his second win of the season and seventh of his career. More importantly, the result moved him back to second in the drivers’ championship, 40 points behind Antonelli and six ahead of Hamilton.

Antonelli put on a late charge for second and closed onto the back of Verstappen on the final lap, but was unable to find a way past the Dutchman. The result still marked a strong rebound for the Mercedes driver after his disappointing retirement two weeks ago in Barcelona.

Russell ends win drought as Hamilton and Verstappen reignite classic rivalry in Austrian GP

George Russell converted pole position into victory at the Austrian Grand Prix, leading from lights to flag to finally return to the top step of the podium, while Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen treated fans to a throwback on-track battle reminiscent of their classic duels. Here's everything that happened during the race at the Red Bull Ring. On Lap 11, Hamilton and Verstappen became locked in a thrilling duel, with the Dutchman initially getting past before being overtaken again and squeezed to the outside, leaving Verstappen almost in the gravel.

The Dutchman immediately came on the radio, calling for a penalty for the British driver. On Lap 13, Hamilton triggered the first round of pit stops among the front-runners, diving into the pits early to switch onto the hard compound and undercut the competition. A lap later, it was Leclerc's turn to pit, with the Ferrari driver also switching to the hard compound. After closing back in on Hamilton, Verstappen finally made the move stick with another spectacular overtake, securing second place for good. On Lap 24, Carlos Sainz was forced to retire with a mechanical issue on his Williams, triggering a Virtual Safety Car just as Kimi Antonelli had entered the pit lane for his scheduled stop.

After his pit stop, Antonelli once again drew alongside Leclerc and retook third place, setting off in pursuit of Verstappen and Russell ahead, although the gap was already close to ten seconds. Lap after lap, Verstappen began closing in on Russell, setting up a fight for the victory, while Antonelli also started reeling in both drivers from behind, raising the prospect of a three-way battle for the win. On Lap 50, Verstappen gave up the race lead to make his final pit stop, rejoining the track well behind Russell but with fresher tyres.

Russell wins Austrian Grand Prix, fighting off Verstapppen challenge
28 Jun 2026
Steven De Groote
F1 Technical

Mercedes' George Russell has won the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring. Despite starting from pole, Russell had a tough day in the office with Verstappen posing a major challenge, surely helped by Red Bull's car updates. Kimi Antonelli finished a very close third.

On lap 30 Antonelli found a way past Leclerc in Turn 4 while Hamilton moments later also made it past Hadjar in the same corner. As Verstappen edged ever closer to Russell… On lap 37 Piastri found his way past Leclerc after Turn 1 with Hamilton passing his teammate half a lap later after cautiously backing out of an overtaking move in Turn 4. Despite trying, Hamilton failed to make it past Piastri on the softs, so when the McLaren driver was called in, Hamilton pitted as well. One lap later Russell was called in as well, having only 1.4 seconds left over Verstappen. Russell meanwhile regained hope to win the race as Verstappen's pace degraded quickly after Russell's stop. When the Red Bull driver pitted on lap 50, he rejoined in third place, 10.8 seconds behind Russell. Antonelli inherited the lead with a 7 second advantage over his teammate.

Up on front, the top three were coming closer together as they neared the end of the race. With 8 laps remaining, Russell retained 5 seconds over Verstappen with Antonelli 3.4 seconds behind the Red Bull. The gap further reduced to 2.2 seconds and 0.7s at the start of the ultimate lap. It gave Antonelli a slight chance for second with overtake enabled, but it proved insufficient, finishing 4 tenths behind Verstappen. That will have been a very welcome chequered flag for Russell after mounting pressure from behind, especially in the second half of the race. Needless to say, Red Bull's big upgrade package has payed off, and will surely give them hope for more podiums and race wins soon.

Russell admits he felt "uncomfortable" over Verstappen comeback at Austria GP.
George Russell has admitted to feeling "quite uncomfortable" ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen at the Austrian GP, with the newly-upgraded RB22 chasing the Mercedes driver down during the latter stages of Sunday's race in Spielberg.

Henry Eccles
GPblog.com

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has praised Russell's performance as "cold blooded," but the race did not quite feel that way for the 28-year-old, as he explained to media, including GPblog, at the post-race press conference. "It didn't quite feel like that, to be honest," Russell said. "It felt a really calm and controlled race. I think if we took Max out of the picture, it was, you'd say, a really strong performance from Mercedes. 20 seconds ahead of McLaren, more ahead of Ferrari.”

"But with the upgrades on the Red Bull, Max was in the fight for pole yesterday. Really great race pace from him today. He pressured me in the middle stint and forced me. To stop with 28 laps remaining which was quite uncomfortable. But I had a really strong first 20 laps of that stint, which allowed me just to bring it home in the final eight."

Russell's attention then turned to his own home race, Silverstone next weekend, but while the Austrian GP victory has given him more confidence in his own abilities, he is still slightly puzzled on how to optimise set up in 2026. Russell said: "I have a lot of confidence in myself knowing I can do it. I have less confidence in being able to get everything aligned with the car, the setup, and the tyres because it's just been so up and down for me, and even this weekend at points, I was six tenths behind Kimi, and then come Q3, I was two tenths ahead. And I don't honestly have a major answer for that."

Max Verstappen and Red Bull surprise themselves with stunning Austrian GP result
Max Verstappen finished in an impressive second place at the Austrian Grand Prix, and the strong performance caught the Dutchman and Red Bull off guard.

Max Verstappen admitted Red Bull's performance in the Austrian Grand Prix exceeded expectations after recovering from fifth on the grid to finish a close second behind George Russell. "It went even better than expected in the race, I have to say," Verstappen reflected afterwards. "That's definitely a positive."

The result came as something of a surprise, given how difficult the weekend had been. Verstappen's Friday practice was disrupted after his RB22 stopped in the pit lane twice during the opening session, before his qualifying hopes were compromised by a crash that left him starting only fifth.

The problems did not disappear on Sunday either. Throughout the race, Verstappen continued to battle brake issues and once again complained about instability from the rear of the car. At one stage, he reported that the rear suspension was no longer working as intended, costing him valuable lap time during the middle phase of the race. Despite those setbacks, the overall mood within Red Bull was overwhelmingly positive.

A thirsty George Russell won the Austrian Grand Prix from pole position on Sunday to trim Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli’s Formula One championship lead to 40 points. Max Verstappen finished 1.6 seconds adrift, after crashing in qualifying and starting fifth, at his Red Bull team’s home circuit with Antonelli third and 0.3 behind after a thrilling chase to the line at scenic Spielberg.

“Incredible to be back on the top step. It’s been a little while, so I am definitely going to enjoy this one this evening,” said Russell, who can now head to his home British GP at Silverstone next weekend on a high. He revealed over the radio after taking the chequered flag that his drinks system had failed during the race, the first of the season to be declared a “heat hazard”. “Nice race for it to do so, I’m a little bit thirsty,” he said.

“I was having to push every single lap and when you push those boundaries there’s bound to be a small mistake or two,” said Russell. “I knew how quick the guys were behind. Kimi has been extraordinarily quick this whole season, so every lap I was looking at the timing board.”

Will strong Austrian GP help Red Bull keep Verstappen? Our verdict
28 Jun 2026
THE RACE TEAM
The Race

The Austrian Grand Prix weekend featured a massive Red Bull upgrade, fresh rumours about Max Verstappen's Formula 1 future, and then his best result of the 2026 season. After all that, is Verstappen - who's on the brink of being able to trigger a Red Bull contract exit clause if he wants - more or less likely to stay on at the team with which he's won all his titles? Here are our team's thoughts:

Josh Suttill: There's no doubt Red Bull's chassis has passed a crucial test. If the upgrade failed this weekend and the team remained fourth-best, I can't see how Verstappen could have faith that this Red Bull 2.0 has what it takes to develop a championship-winning car. The biggest question for me is whether it can develop its engine to be a match for the Mercedes.
Gary Anderson: I'm pretty sure that whatever parts Red Bull actually had left and raced after Verstappen's qualifying shunt must have put a smile on his face. He was competitive and looked like he was having fun - and that his car was at least best of the rest behind the two Mercedes cars.

Ben Anderson: It certainly won't hurt Red Bull's chances, especially considering it threw a massive upgrade package at the car for this race and that could just have easily backfired as paid off. It was interesting to see that Q3, run one, pace - where Verstappen was within a tenth of the two Mercedes before that straight mode problem threw him into the barriers - was genuine. He was a proper threat to Mercedes in this race and maybe could have won it with a better grid position.

Verstappen predicts a strange British Grand Prix after battery power trouble made him laugh
28 June 2026
The Canadian Press
TSN

Racing at Silverstone, one of the oldest tracks on the F1 schedule, will leave the cars starved for power, Verstappen predicted. The cars charge their batteries using energy from braking, but Silverstone doesn’t have enough heavy braking to provide the energy needed for its long straights, he said.

“Silverstone, I love the track, but I did a few laps on the simulator, I just started laughing. It felt like a different track, to be honest. You barely have battery around the lap. It’s just constantly flat. So yes, it’s going to feel very different compared to what we are used to around Silverstone, because of the layout of the track,” Verstappen said after finishing second in Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix.

“Here (in Austria) you have long straights and big braking zones, so you can charge the battery. There you have long straights but in a fast corner, for example, so you can’t really charge the batteries, and then the next straight you don’t have a lot to spend. It’s going to be a tough one.” Verstappen was speaking after his best result of the season in Red Bull’s home race, with an upgraded car. He revealed he managed it despite discomfort in his knees after a heavy crash in qualifying. “I knocked my knees. You hit the bones, it’s not very nice. But today was OK, so that was the most important,” he said.

Ecclestone argues Ferrari is being held back by one key issue: 'That's the trouble'…
Former Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone believes Ferrari's current problem is having 'too many Italians.' The Scuderia also endured a difficult Sunday in Austria after its previous victory in Barcelona.

"Trouble with Ferrari, I think there's too many Italians that's involved explaining what to do and what not to do," Ecclestone was quoted by Crash.net at the Austrian Grand Prix. "You just need really one person do this or do that. Whether they're right or wrong, time will tell them."

Lando Norris was also shocked by Ferrari's issues at the Red Bull Ring. The defending world champion said: "The shock was pretty Ferrari today, struggling so much. So, to be honest, I feel bad for them. I mean, when you have no power, you have to push like hell in the straights, in the corners, and you can't do that with these front tyres, So it's a tough race for them."

Wolff baffled by Ferrari development push given F1 cost cap

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has admitted he is baffled by Ferrari's relentless development programme, questioning how the Scuderia continues to introduce major upgrades while staying within Formula 1's strict cost cap. "We're a little bit surprised that Ferrari can throw these huge updates at the car in the way they do,” he told reporters in Spielberg.”

"In my opinion, they need to be running out of money soon, cost cap money, because we can't do that. We're simply lacking the buffer in the cost cap to be able to bring so many parts in the way they do. So, hopefully that's going to change towards the end of the season when they won't be able to bring any parts anymore. At least, let's say, the logic would say that and we're going to come with more."

The weaknesses Ferrari's disappointing engine upgrade debut exposed
29 Jun 2026
JOSH SUTTILL, MARK HUGHES
The Race

Ferrari and its rivals were caught out by a deeply underwhelming debut race for its much-anticipated engine upgrade at Formula 1's Austrian Grand Prix. Qualifying in Austria promised so much, with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton getting between the Mercedes duo, potentially setting up a Barcelona rematch. But Sunday in Austria proved to be nothing like Barcelona. Ferrari was well-beaten by Mercedes, jumped by the upgraded Red Bull, and even pipped by McLaren, leaving it fourth-best as Hamilton was almost half a minute adrift of the victory in fifth.

Ferrari's Austria engine upgrade worked as expected, but it was never going to be enough to bridge the large power unit deficit it has. It's particularly exposed at a circuit such as the Red Bull Ring, but hidden somewhere like Barcelona, where there are plenty of opportunities to recharge. You only have to look at the GPS traces to see the Ferrari deployment tailing off before the end of the straights versus the Mercedes and the Red Bull. For example, the Ferrari was routinely losing 20km/h to them on the run to the Turn 4 right-hander.

In Austria it was clear that the two-stop was the quicker strategy, but Ferrari had to use the slower three-stop strategy because its tyre degradation was that bad. It could live with Verstappen's Red Bull over a single lap, but so much damage was done to its rear tyres over a race distance that it was only the third- or fourth-best car on Sunday. Leclerc called it an "incredibly difficult race" and complained of "very, very low grip" at the rear.

Vasseur hints at wrong decision that derailed Ferrari’s race in Spielberg

"It was a challenging weekend: I don't think we got it off on the right foot on Friday, as we struggled in both FP1 and FP2 and weren’t able to complete proper long runs," Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur explained. "We recovered well over a single lap in qualifying, but we probably didn’t prepare the race as well as we should have."

"Looking back, we were perhaps too focused on Mercedes today," Vasseur admitted. "We pushed hard in the opening laps and then reacted too aggressively with the strategy, trying to stay with them when, realistically, that wasn’t our race. We will learn from this, refocus on ourselves and immediately turn our attention to the British Grand Prix next week."

I said it before the Austrian Grand Prix: I wasn’t buying the Ferrari hype. The Barcelona win was real, sure, but the circumstances around it raised more questions than it answered. Then the Red Bull Ring happened. Fifth and eighth. That’s your answer. For all the hype leading to last weekend’s match at Red Bull Ring, Lewis Hamilton didn’t sugarcoat the results after the race. That’s a start.

“I think it’s more of a reality check,” Hamilton said. “We don’t know why we were so competitive on Sunday in Barcelona. That’s a very strong track for me. I chose a strategy that, from experience, I knew would work, with the degree that we had — it was like 2021. But then today I think we were hit more with reality: we do still have a good car, but we are down compared to Mercedes on outright pace. They just are quicker and we have to keep developing.”

Lewis Hamilton explained that the decision to commit to a three-stop strategy in the Austrian Grand Prix ultimately failed to pay off. "I think that was pretty much it. For some reason, we just lacked pace. But this morning, in the strategy meeting, they said it's a two stop. Three-stop is four seconds slower. It was a three for me, because I thought the deg was going to be super high, particularly as the track temperature today was the highest we've had in a long, long time. It was a mid 50s to 60 degree track temperature. So I thought that deg was going to be massive for us, and so I wanted to start on the soft, but the team were nervous. They pushed for us to start on a medium, which ultimately I think was suboptimum."

"I started on the medium, but that stint was very... for some reason I was good with George for a second and then he just started pulling away. Particularly, I mean his tow, but he's just leaking out a little bit on the straights. And then my rears went off very, very quick. Really don't know why the balance was like that, but it was just tough to hold on to. So we stopped early, went to the three, and then the soft later on wasn't so good."
