View Full Version : The Sponsor Thread

Tell me if this is a stupid idea but I think there's an offseason thread in here somewhere. I was thinking that when I see a rally car I have no idea what a lot of the foreign sponsors are and what they do/make. An example being Munchi's the ice cream makers which is very strange for a WRC team, and in Finland seeing Toni Gardemeister flogging Sofa's for Koti Idea.
I suppose this thread could be a place for people to ask about these sponsors, as I'm sure there will be a lot of new ones in the new season.
I've got a few to start off:
What is Ponsse and Expert?
Also I saw Subaru being sponsored by a company called Sammy a few years ago, and the other day I saw Sammy on a gumball machine. Is that the same company or do they make other things besides?

Sammy is or was a Japanese company involved with markeing the WRC in Japan.
I can't remember if it held the commercial rights or not. Another company called

No, there is copywright on logos. You can't just reproduce them without consent of the company owner. Of course, the driver first could ask the company to put the logo up for nothing.

I don't know if it's legal but you see cars with 555 and Marlboro logos in NZ. It would be especially illegal, given that tobacco advertising has been illegal in NZ since the early 90s...

Tabacco advertising is illegal in NZ but I guess it's a very grey area if you are referring to some of the hotted-up road going Imprezas and Celicas etc you see around in rally guise. That's not the tabacco companies doing it but just some individual.
Also regarding that Anti Hair Loss product. NZ is one of only a few countries (the US being another) where the advertisment of 'Persciption' Pharmacuticals is allowed. Hence the ads on TV we have for Xenical, Viagra, Cialis etc. Merck Sharp and Dohme the makers of Propecia obviously see a bigger international audience than just NZ when it comes to the Rally NZ sponsorship deal.
NZ doctors hate the fact that these pharmacutical companies are bombarding the general public with these ads. People are walking into their local surgery and clinics demanding prescriptions for a drug they have seen on TV even before the doctor has a chance to take a pulse rate or blood pressure.
Pharmac, the NZ goverment body that controls phamacutical medication, has been reviewing this advertising and it's effect on the public and has more than once threatened to stop it.
Just like in the early 90s when the Rothmans Rally of NZ became the Smokefree Rally of NZ because of a law change. We may see a similar thing with Propecia if the government passes a law regarding Perscription Pharmacutical Advertising.
'Smokefree' was/is a government scheme, and bag of money, to educate the public to smoke smoking, and also take the place of any sporting or cultural event that had existing tabacco sponsorship for the first 3 years of the new law.

I'm well aware of all this. I think it's very embarrassing that our country allows advertising of medication, and I think it would be very great when it's made illegal, same as alcohol. I'm certain that there will be some other benign mega-corporation that would step into the breach to take up the sponsorship.
I was thinking of one particular Mitsubishi 3000GT with huge Marlboro logos as well as the souped-up Subarus with 555 logos. Of course it's got nothing to do with the companies, but still... if you went around with huge profanities painted on the side of your car, something would be done.

But nobody makes you buy their products! It's all down to your decision! A clever person will never use drugs, no matter how much AD he watch. But an idiot will try it, even if there's no AD around him at all! C'mon, people, it's silly! I would welcome any company, which would like to sponsor WRC, whatever it produces. Hairloss company help people, Viagra help people too. What's the problem. If a person needs it, he will buy it. I dont understand you, what's the problem? Those are just words on car livery, and their logos can make the car look great. I thought no one was aginst martini on Fords or Lancia. So why not Viagra? By the way, as for the image, this medicine gives power to a man, so as for slogan on a rally car, you can easily say "we boost the team!". Why not?
As for your judgement, I would ban Red Bull and other energetic drinks' ad too. People must be active without any drinks, so if they drink it, then they're weak!! And it's bad for WRC image, cause there shouldn't be any weak people in this sport.

The problem is when someone sees an ad for some medication and then goes to their doctor to demand it, because they don't understand anything about it. Their doctor won't give it to them because it's harmful in some way, but they just demand it because the ad promised a miracle. That's the other problem - peole see ads for weightloss remedy and think they can continue their sedentary and unhealthy lifestlye because they think the drug is a miracle cure.
Would you be happy to drive for Viagra White Sauron Racing? With a big Viagra logo on your chest?
But does a hairloss company or something like Viagra promote a positive image for the WRC?
Definitely not. They imply greedy multinationals and middle-aged, pathetic men. It would just be embarrassing to be a fan when it had sponsors like that.

Viagra: We help old men who can't get erections naturally to get them artificially. No, I wouldn't want that image on my team.
Energy drinks are entirely different.

I don't think we can afford to think morally about sponsorship. We need every penny we can get, as I think most of us here knows.
If we are to think morally about it, why not ban Vodafone as because of them teenagers might end up having huge mobile phone bills to pay. Would that do good for the WRC's image? I think not. But you can't think that way, if you did you might aswell ban everything.

Reducing the argument to it's most absurd - a debating technique that doesn't work. I think there are a couple of people who are blowing this out of proportion. Like the song I'm listening to says, "take a chill pill" (it's from the 80s). I happen to think that if you're going to ban tobacco advertising, then ban alcohol advertising as well. I don't think that doing either of these things would be a good idea as it wouldn't achieve anything. And, there are good reasons to ban pharmaceutical advertising, as I've enumerated above.

Well that's your choice. But, I would be very reluctant. some big pharmaceutical companies are corrupt and unethical and immoral, and I don't think they should be allowed to advertise for reasons I've stated. But if they are allowed, then, if you are okay with it, then be sponsored by them by all means.
I wouldn't object to taking their money, just to wearing their logo ;) if there was some subliminal, Marlboro-bar-code-style logo, I wouldn't mind (so long as it was legal and I don't think it should be), but I would object to having a huge "Viagra" logo on my uniform.

Coming from the man who would happily drive with Gandalf on the side of his car lol. I see what you're saying WS dont worry and Cal is right you have to also agree with the every penny counts concept. What I wish is that the WRC could be attracting the huge companies because it should be. Thats what Morrie Chandler and the FIA want. People will pay millions just to get the tiniest sticker on an F1 car and I hope in the future you'll be able to say the same about rallying.

Exactly. It's just a PR. If Loeb advertises PS2, it doesn't meen he plays it every day.
If I advertise (not me, but my suit or car) Viagra, it doesn't meen I'm a wrong man. They give me money and get AD. I get they money and compete in a rally. In biology it's called symbiosis.
You think why people like Soth Park, for example, or Simpsons? Because those cartoons have brilliant graphics or humour? No. because they're not afraid of laughing at themselves, at people.
Wearing a Viagra-sponsored suit would be just fun for me, cool. Advertising alchohol on my car is not a problem for me. it's good for holidays and I like to drink some cognac or martini on big holidays like birthdays or smth like this. But I'm a smart person and understand it's dangerous to drink it before driving. And I will never do it, though I can be their sponsor.
Advertising tobacco? No problem for me. Have you seen the lates comedy "thank you for smokin!"? if you haven't - go and watch. It raises the same plot. There you're just doing your work. But in your mind you can be against it and never use. If you're a clever person, you'll make a right choice, believe me. AD influences only on people who don't have their own mind.

I still think Viagra is the wrong image for the WRC. It implies that the bulk of fans are old impotent men. If Viagra became title sponsor of the the whole WRC, I wouldn't stop being interested, but I wouldn't become a fan if I wasn't already because the association is embarrassing.

But as for me, the first accotiation is "more power". It's not that bad. Plus, Viagra brand belongs to Pfizer, which is a very big company! And they can do the same as BP did with Ford: the main livery is in Pfizer style, plus some Viagra ones. if you ask me, as a mad Ford fan, if I would like to see Ford in such a livery and Marcus Gronholm as my fav driver wearing such a suit, I would say: YES! It's cool!
Damn, in Russia we have a wonderful girlsband, which is called VIAGRA (Vocal-Instrumental Band "GRA" (GRA is game in ukrainian). (Nu Virgos for the foreign market)There're three very sexy girls with such shapes, but no one is feeling embarassed if they're listening to their songs. It's just cool!

I recall that I read something about Valentino Rossi being anti-tobacco and he wouldn't ride a tobacco sponsored bike, yet he rode Gauloises and Camel liveried bikes...
Anyway, the question is, what would you do if you were to be sponsored by something completely distasteful to you and incongruent with your values? Leave the seat empty? Drive/ride being uncomfortable with it? Being "ah, what the heck, let's do it" and kind of adapting/giving up your values? IMO here's why Pharamacuticals advertising should banned.
1. They are a corporate. Their main objective is to make money for the shareholders. The welfare and health of it's customers it not it's main objective.
2. Ask any doctor at a hospital and they will tell you that 40% of the patients in the medical wards are there because of a side effect of another medication that person has been taking.
3. The inhumane cruelty these companies do to thousands of lab animals everyday.

fnck #3, that's budda talk!
replace 1 with this (which was part of my philosophy studies):
1. the drug companies are, for the most part, not interested in curing the illness but curbing it, or its symptoms. there are many diseases that, if cured, would bring no moneys to the companies who spent millions developing a cure. and if they do develop a cure for something they would have to sell it for such an incredible amount to get a return on their investment that they would piss off their friends at the insurance companies and the public as well, therefore dropping the price of their stock. but announcing that they have found a drug that diminishes some effects of whatever illness and that they can sell that drug to someone who has to take a pill or 2 a day for the rest of their lives will bring them a constant cash flow (lowers the costs of R&D) and a company image boost (stock goes up). and then, they can refine the drug more and more until their patents go out and other companies can finally profit for making an actual cure (based on the other companie's costly research) and boost that second company..... vicious circle. hence: don't get sick and grow your own vegetables.
so, here comes the final blow as to why i -strongly- believe that prescription drug advertising should be banned in motorsports and everywhere:
3. using the same logic that is applied to tobacco advertising, we can ban drug advertising for the simple reason that the human mind is weak. tobacco was banned, not because it is bad because everyone already knows that, but because associating tobacco products to motorsports will result in weakening one's will and falling for the temptation. that is because our minds are such that advertizing gets to us and gets to us deeply. some of you do not believe me and that's fine, but almost everything you do is dictated upon the will of the advertising companies. why you drink a particular beer, why you buy a certain shampoo, why you eat a certain sausage, why you shop at a certain shop is all dictated as to an add you saw or that someone saw and told you about. you might say that it's because that shop is the cheapest, or that shampoo makes my hair shine or that it is because it's the best tasting beer, but the reason you tried it the first time is because you saw an ad for it or heard about it from someone who did see an ad for it. that is precisely why prescription drugs should not advertise. people do see ads on tv or on the side of cars and then go see their doctors and tell them that they cant get hard sometimes and that they should get some blue diamonds. the doctors examine them, tell them there is nothing wrong but the patients still insist and ask for a second opinion. or, for viagra's case, it has made the drug an underground phenomenon where people steal it and sell it on the streets like crack (yes, i've seen it in europe too). where i now live, the usa, there is presicription drug advertising and they say in their comercials "ask your doctor". patients are not the ones supposed to ask their doctors, the doctors are the ones supposed to tell the patients what they need. where i come from in europe advertising to the general public for prescription medication is illegal and guess what, medication are a lot cheaper. with a puzzled look on your face you are squinting as you are reading and asking yourself: what's that got to do with anything? well, drugs are a lot more expensive in the usa because there is a large chunk of budgets set for advertising. you watch american tv and you see all these comercials interupting shows every 10 minutes, and you have to ask yourself, how much money is spent to advertise a product? and how does that affect the price? some products need the advertising capital to be able to sell in mass quatities in order to make a profit. but prescription drugs cannot be sold to the general public and have to go through that annoying filter that is a doctors' prescription note. so you have to pound the potential consumers with advertising to manage to send a relative few to see their doctors where in turn that number will diminish to an even smaller fraction for the ones who do need the product (or can convince their doctors that they do).
so you see, prescription medication advertising is a way for advertisers to control a part of your purchasing habbits that they have only a small influence upon.

3. using the same logic that is applied to tobacco advertising, we can ban drug advertising for the simple reason that the human mind is weak. tobacco was banned, not because it is bad because everyone already knows that, but because associating tobacco products to motorsports will result in weakening one's will and falling for the temptation. that is because our minds are such that advertizing gets to us and gets to us deeply. some of you do not believe me and that's fine, but almost everything you do is dictated upon the will of the advertising companies. why you drink a particular beer, why you buy a certain shampoo, why you eat a certain sausage, why you shop at a certain shop is all dictated as to an add you saw or that someone saw and told you about. you might say that it's because that shop is the cheapest, or that shampoo makes my hair shine or that it is because it's the best tasting beer, but the reason you tried it the first time is because you saw an ad for it or heard about it from someone who did see an ad for it. that is precisely why prescription drugs should not advertise. people do see ads on tv or on the side of cars and then go see their doctors and tell them that they cant get hard sometimes and that they should get some blue diamonds. the doctors examine them, tell them there is nothing wrong but the patients still insist and ask for a second opinion. or, for viagra's case, it has made the drug an underground phenomenon where people steal it and sell it on the streets like crack (yes, i've seen it in europe too). where i now live, the usa, there is presicription drug advertising and they say in their comercials "ask your doctor". patients are not the ones supposed to ask their doctors, the doctors are the ones supposed to tell the patients what they need. where i come from in europe advertising to the general public for prescription medication is illegal and guess what, medication are a lot cheaper. with a puzzled look on your face you are squinting as you are reading and asking yourself: what's that got to do with anything? well, drugs are a lot more expensive in the usa because there is a large chunk of budgets set for advertising. you watch american tv and you see all these comercials interupting shows every 10 minutes, and you have to ask yourself, how much money is spent to advertise a product? and how does that affect the price? some products need the advertising capital to be able to sell in mass quatities in order to make a profit. but prescription drugs cannot be sold to the general public and have to go through that annoying filter that is a doctors' prescription note. so you have to pound the potential consumers with advertising to manage to send a relative few to see their doctors where in turn that number will diminish to an even smaller fraction for the ones who do need the product (or can convince their doctors that they do).
so you see, prescription medication advertising is a way for advertisers to control a part of your purchasing habbits that they have only a small influence upon.
who cares about mike moore and lab rats?!
Maui, i just noticed something...... i hope you don't think i am attacking you personally. i believe in the same things you seem to believe in, it's just the road we take to get there are is different. so, in some cases it's the destination, not the journey that counts!

Pretty interesting in the UK has anyone seen the rally themed RedBull advert?
Strange one no specific reference to their involvement in rallying just a cartoon car that goes over a jump and gets "Wings".

I've seen that one in NZ. I suppose it's in the Red Bull culture to not make specific references to cars or teams. The brand is strong enough not to need it.

Just as the Stobart Focus WRCs have ladies names in the tradition of the Stobart trucks, I noticed today that the Munchi's Focus WRCs have names on them too which I think are ice cream flavours.
In Mexico, LPC's car is "Super Dulce de Leche" and JPR's car is "Crema Jersey". Can anyone translate?

The translations will be something like "Extra sweet of milk" and "Jersey Cream".

Anyone foolish enough to be influenced by advertising rightly deserves whatever befalls upon.

In that case we are all fools. Manufacturer involvment in the WRC is advertising. What would you prefer... Subaru, Ford, Citroen and co battling it out on the stages, or a painted board on the edge of a football field? Advertising is everywhere and it's extremely hard to escape.
