Not unexpected at all, Kurt Busch to Sam Hornish.

Well KMA, this is just another thing NASCAR has written in pencil ... http://www.motorsportforum.com/forums/images/icons/rolleyes.gif
Penske should NOT be allowed to misuse the Previous Champion's Provisional that way ! http://www.motorsportforum.com/forums/images/icons/rolleyes.gif

I can see this costing Dale Jarrett the opportunity of making his last 5 races ... :s
Dale Jarrett is the 1999 Champion & Kurt Busch is the 2004 Champion ...
the Previous Champion's Provisional goes to the most RECENT Champion !
(NOTE : Bill Elliott is the 1988 Champion)

I wonder who will be next to be sacrificed to the demigods of rules bending & special treatment ???

Will Dave Blaney (34th in OP) be sacrificed for new team-mate Jacques Villeneuve ???
Will Kasey Kahne (20th in OP) or Elliott Sadler (27th in OP) be sacrificed for new team-mate Patrick Carpentier ???

I am getting really tired of NASCAR bending the rules to suit their whims. http://www.motorsportforum.com/forums/images/icons/rolleyes.gif

I thought Nascar wasn't Broke :p :

obviously, Roger found a flaw in the system and took advantage of the situation

There's nothing wrong with exploiting a loophole as long as you exploit it to the fullest.

It is much more than just a "loophole" that was exploited ...
to make a rule & then change it to suit themselves is hypocrisy ! http://www.motorsportforum.com/forums/images/icons/rolleyes.gif

Lately NASCAR keeps being changed to suit the ones in power & to hell with the fans think about it ...
it isn't broke yet but if the morons in change don't stop F'ing with things it will be badly broken ! http://www.motorsportforum.com/forums/images/icons/eek.gif

I was looking forward to Sam not making a race until April or May. Now he's guaranteed to run around at the back in at least the first 5. As long as it took him to figure out the IRL cars on a road course it should be fun seeing how long it takes him to learn how to drive a COT.

Well KMA, this is just another thing NASCAR has written in pencil ... Wasn't Petty Enterprises talking about doing the same thing with Bobby LaBonte's past champion provisional?

I think Nascar should make Penske swap car numbers and pit crews too.

How exactly is NASCAR bending the rules? There's no rule that says Penske can't do it. I'm sure a few other teams have already tried and done the same thing.

Exactly ! IF they want the #2 Miller Lite's Owner's Points, then put the chosen one in the #2 !!! http://www.motorsportforum.com/forums/images/icons/tongue-anim.gif

I really don't see it as misuse. I think the transfer of #09 D500 points to (was it 78?) was a bigger manipulation of the intended rule than this, (as well as Ginn #13 to DEI #15, or the considered B Labonte/K Petty swap.) This is the beginning of the year, Penske should be able to arrange his teams any way he chooses. Now if Kurt races his way into the Top 35 after 5 races, Hornish takes his Top 35 position and drops out of it, and they want to swap OPs again...then I think you have a case to complain about.

I can see this costing Dale Jarrett the opportunity of making his last 5 races .snip

I don't really think this will happen, Kurt shouldn't need to use his CP more than once. D500 is a crapshoot where only 3 cars will get in on speed. He's a solid performer at Cal, LV, & Atl, not great at MV but he's even won there.

I wonder who will be next to be sacrificed to the demigods of rules bending & special treatment ??? Will Dave Blaney (34th in OP) be sacrificed for new team-mate Jacques Villeneuve ???

Don't see the OPs swap happening anywhere else. When the issue 1st came up I looked at the teams. I thought of the KK/PC OP swap since Kahne was able to race his way up to 20th after nearly dropping out of the Top 35 earlier in the year. However the only way these OPs swaps happen is with the agreement of sponsors. Having just pulled off the coup of luring Budweiser over I can't see them risking one of the biggest sponsors deals in the business to give Carp a head start.

Well its Owners Points right? So shoudnt the OWNER get to choose what car the points go with?

Remember that NASCAR owns the numbers and the teams pretty much rent/ease them. So by some peoples logic here, if a team switches numbers for whatever reason then whatever team picks up that old number gets the Owners Points?
