Hella has demonstrated a revolutionary new motor racing circuit lighting system during a confidential demonstration held at Melbourne’s Calder Park Raceway on November 12, 2007.
Named ARTIS, this ingenious motor racing circuit and public event lighting system is designed and produced by Hella Australia and will be exported globally.
This comprehensive demonstration included test drives by current Red Bull Formula 1 Team driver, Mark Webber, five time World 500cc Champion Mick Doohan and Australian Formula 3 Championship driver Leanne Tander.

I see nothing in this report that even remotely suggests there will be a night time F1 race in Melbourne. Having walked there this morning and yesterday morning, I cannot see the remotest chance of a night race at Albert Park.
So Dream On!!

OK, I have to clarify what I am trying to say. Albert Park is in hte middle of a very dense residential area. I read an article a year ago that said that the land price at Middle Park is the highest in Melbourne on a per sq metre basis - even higher than Toorak or Brighton. There is an old folks home across the intersection from where I live, which is just over 1 mile in distance from teh western part of the track. In all honesty, I simply cannot see a night race being sanctioned at Albert Park, no matter what some of the non residents of the area might hope for.
I can see it being sanctioned for Philip Island tho'

Definitely. No way it'd ever happen in Albert Park. Although I can't imagine F1 at Phillip Island without butchering it.

It says that the images recorded from the event will be analysed...
I am almost certain that still photography will be extremely difficult under those conditions..trying to produce a high resolution image in low light is very difficult as you have to sacrifice quality to bump up your ISO ratings.
So expect to see some very grainy photography from events like this.

Depends what you're prepared to spend on Glass! Pros will have nice fast lenses and great vantage points, so they'll produce great photos.
Folks in spectator areas will probably suffer, though.

Well, you could ask AJP who is a professional photographer.

;)
I shoot with a 70-200 f2.8L canon lens and borrow a mate 400mm f2.8L Canon lens. I have also been testing the new 1D MKIII which has the dual digic processors and have been quite impressed with image quality using an ISO of 1250. BUT, we're talking F1 cars here...so much movement it's not funny. Now, the light from the Hella's would be a maximum of f2.8 to f3.5 which means a very minimum focal range in very dark conditions..but would look great on motion picture!
If you remember the still images caught by F1 photographers of Ralf getting airborne in Melbourne at Turn 1...it would be extremely difficult and extremely lucky capturing something like that with night conditions.
The one thing it would do, is make the photographers do everything differently. So expect to see still images with flash and slow exposures to give as much visual dynamics as possible...thats if we are allowed to use flash as I would suspect it would cause some distraction on slow corners for drivers...

I use the 28 - 300 f3.5L Stabilized Canon lens, which I bought because its just about the best all-rounder.
Even with the less than impressive max aperture, it performed ok under arficifial lighting at the Race of Champions in Paris in 2006. The ISO was set on 400 all night which doesn't seem to increase the noise too much.

My other half will be using his f2.8L 70-200mm lens and the L series 1.4x converter (his Christmas present that I let him have early) at Race of Champions this weekend. He got some good rally pictures a few weeks ago using it but I'm not entirely sure how good the pictures from RoC will be.
You would seriously need to spend alot of money on L series lenses to get good F1 pictures at a night race. Theres no way the average fan would get anything worth looking at with a little point and shoot camera.

If he's not going officially as a photographer, he may have problems getting that lot past security. Professional camera equipment is on the prohibition list for Wembley.

We'll he's got all the equipment and can take a good picture but I'd hardly call him professional. :p
I'd not read anywhere about what you can and can't take in so thanks for the info Steve. :)

Well, I think Stade de France had similar rules, and security went through my camera bag, but let me through anyway, so it's probably worth taking your chances!

Steve, your shots have held up really well under lights which gives me hope...
My main concern is that the media are so bloody particular nowdays with quality expecting everyone to be shooting with 1Ds MKII's giving them the absolutley highest image quality out there..I do worry that anything over ISO400 will start to beak down too much for magazine use...but then again, the 1D MKIII has held up remarkably well over ISO400, and you photos give proof that we should all be just fine... :) sweeeet
what canon body do you use?
GridGirl
14th December 2007, 22:48
Its one hell of a lens. You try carrying roughly 2kg's worth of camera lens down your trousers and see how long they stay up. I don't need him to get arrested for indecent exposure. RoC is a family event. :p
Plus if he dropped it, I really do think he would cry! Boys and thier toys!
