View Full Version : Why are trains so expensive?

I was looking at a journey from Gatwick to Edinburgh.

Edinburgh £78 on Easy Jet 06:30 – 08:05 and returning 16:45 – 18:00.

Train for same journey is £154, departing 07:00 – 11:30 and 17:30 – 22:16

So, one journey costs £78 and takes 2 hours and 50 minutes.

The other costs twice as much and takes over 3 times longer.

I would also have to pay just under £30 to get to London and back while Gatwick is less.

Now, I know that planes take less passengers than trains and I would guess they are more expensive to maintain so why are trains so expensive in comparison?

Surely, from an environmental perspective, getting people off the planes and onto much more efficient trains is desirable. However, if it costs twice as much and takes 3 times longer, then why should we?
