As we currently dont have a bespoke forum for historic rallying I thought this was the logical home for this thread. Following on from the RAC rally next week in the UK (see thread in the British forum) comes the classic Safari. Some great names competing the entry includes our own Steve Perez who will be swapping the Stratos he will use on the RAC for a Datsun 260Z. Seen an article on Waldegaard's Escort RS and the price of the car is nearly in WRC territory!

I have no idea why they have this rally or any clue of the driver's competing.

All I know, after reading through your post, is that it's just cool.

This is Real Rallying, not the Rally-lite we have now.

Exactly...

I have some friends who are out there working as service crew. I get random messages on Facebook every now and again. I hope one year to be able to go too...

It's just a re-run of the old East African Safari Rally (so it was called from 50's to 70's), including the old cars too. You've never heared of the two former World Rally champions Waldegard and Blomqvist?

Anyway, great they're are still putting up the effort to organize such an amazing event. The IRC version is a joke...

For Killencommies and anyone else who wasnt aware of this events history. This event runs every other year and as Josti says is a re-creation of the former WRC event the Safari Rally. The event is for historic cars although the MK1 Escorts that Waldegaard and Blomqvist (both former WRC champion drivers) are unlike any Scorts that ran in the 70s! The price of these cars is approx £130,000 or $260,000 as prepared by David Sutton/Historic Motorsport with much use of kevlar and carbon fibre. The event lasts 9 days over some of the toughest terrain imaginable and is a true test of man and machine. Compared to this rally the IRC round and all WRC events are a walk in the park.

There is another long distance rally run every second year in New Zealand. The roads are quite a bit easier on the machinery but it is an event based on the principles of old. The next event is October 2008 and to date 60 entries have all ready been received. Check it out on http://www.silverfernrally.co.nz

Finally I got this picture scanned.

Peter Hughes and Billy Young 1964. They won the Safari that year.

No problem with a 2WD car those days. AS a friend of mine said that “The only difference between a 2WD and a 4WD car is that you get stucked in worse places with a 4WD car.”

Now should the picture be little bigger.
