Fuel pumps

How hard/dangerous is it to change a fuel pump that's in the tank? Caroline's reliable Japanese car broke down on Sunday afternoon and came back home on the back of a truck. It cranks over but doesn't start but if a little easy start is sprayed into the intake it runs so one would logically assume it's a faulty pump. Is it a job someone with a bit of mechanical knowledge can do? As far as I know it's just a matter of taking the back seat out, unscrewing the inspection plate off the top and i'm there. It would be a lot of fuss to have it trailered again so it would be good if I could just do it myself.

Are you sure no wire's are loose that should be attached to the fuel pump? That happened to me two years ago when a small bump finally made the connector to come off.

With some jap motors you need to remove the tank to access the pump but even then its no drama.
Should be a case of whipping off the 5 or 6 pump nuts before disconecting the 4p connector and withdrawing the pump.
If Mr Haynes lives with you, he is your friend.

We have a haynes manual but it's for my 406. Will that be a problem? :p

From what I've read it shouldn't involve taking the pump out but we shall see. Might have a look tonight. If I don't return to post in the morning you'll know what's happened :p

Daniel, what car is it Caroline got, same as manufacturer as mine isn't it but a different model if I remember right. If I were you I'd take it to a good garage to get it changed and can suggest a few in the Chester Wirral area if thats any use for you.

You sure it's the pump? Is it fused? Perhaps first check for a burnt fuse.
My old Acura has a fuse specific to the fuel pump.

Yup it's a Legacy :) If you know a good specialist that would be good for the future as it needs it's cam belts done in the next 10k miles or so. Would cost a mint to get it towed 30 miles to Chester sadly though so it'll be a local mechanic or me if Caroline allows :)

I was attempting to check that out just before. An hours work and about 10 nuts and bolts later I am seemingly no closer to the solution. I should have tested the pump first. The relay is horrible to get at.

Oh god no. It has two and the relays are kinda hidden
