In that case they should struggle everywhere? They have often been nowhere in FP's, but have almost always been 3rd force in the rest of the weekend.

I wonder if any of the drivers will compremise their dry saturday for a softer set up that might help them if it rains. Forecast look like a high chance of it 'drizzling' all sunday, so a full wet set up could win someone the race. BMW?
I still think friday practice might in the end turn out to be a 'wasted' day for the race as the chance of rain seems to be increasing on a daily basis.
Second prsctice is notorious for driver starting to try out qualifying runs (shorter runs), so the times become a little less meanginful, in terms of long run pace, and i think first practice usually gives a better prediction of overall base set up and race pace. So going on that i dont see ferrari having the disadvantage everyone was saying they would, but this is speculation.
Hamilton also looks closer to Alonso than in the last few races, but again we wont know until qualifying, or the race. In spa for example, hamilton was a fair bit slower than alonso until the end of practice when he put in a quick run to equal alonsos best time, so its difficult to predict without seeing the breakdown of all the lasp and when they were done.
My feeling is still that the rain will upset the form book here, and the person who manages the unpredictability the best, will probably come up smelling of roses, and the fastest dry weather car will not necessarily win this one.

Apparantly Renault got their simulations data right. Also, they added more wing for the final sector.

Read the latest edition of Motorsport magazine which is a wet weather special issue.
According to Pat Symonds they don't run compromising chassis settings anymore because of larger wheels so you don't have to worry too much about ride height, springs & dampers; the plank still scrapes the floor and aquaplanes because of the downforce generated. You run normal chassis settings and adjust the wing angles according to the conditions.

Emotion until the end.
Two final laps extraordinary of LH in the Q2 and Q3, although FA has been more consistent, and has rolled habitually more faster than all.
Massa with wet asphalt is single a spectator, and Kimi in these conditions is a step behind the Mclaren.
It will be necessary to see the start and the strategies.

Two performances were absolutely incredible. Button, who has already in the past proved that he is one of the best wet weather drivers, put his Honda higher than we have ever seen before this season. It was quite surprising. And of course Vettel - it's the first time, when STR has qualified into Top10. Maybe we are seeing the rise of the new Rainmaster! :D
So it's only the second time this season that Trulli has failed to get into Top10, but that is no news that Toyota can't race in the wet. Before joining Toyota both Jarno and Ralf had several distinguished wet weather performances, but at Toyota they have mostly been at the rear of the grid. A coincidence? Also both JT and RS have won a wet qualifying in their careers.
Massa has been highly criticized in wet/damp conditions, but he did fairly well today, I reckon. His times in Q1 and Q2 were practically equal with Kimi, so the lapdog has been given more fuel on board and dirtier side on the starting grid.

Good qualifying session, I just hope it is a wet race tomorrow. Hamilton's last lap was top draw, hopefully he can sustain the pace in the race.
I think the best qualifiers were Jenson Button and Sebastien Vettel. Button is of course exceedingly good in the wet and I suspect he and Honda will be doing rain dances. Vettel getting the Toro Rosso to 8th place was a wonderful effort, he was the star of qualifying.
I don't know what Ralf Schumacher was thinking when trying to pass Yamamoto, there was no way that move was on. Renault clearly lack pace in the wet.

I think everyone reads too much into lap times with the possibility of a wet race, lap times become irrelevant, and to an extent so too does grid position.
Lets first ignore the chances of crashing at the start, which are higher if you start further down the grid, and assume everyone makes it through the first corner. As was proven at hungary last year, grid position in the wet in modern F1 is fairly irrelevant, with both schumacher and alonso starting outside the top 10, but totally dominating the opening laps.
The real thing we should focus on is which drivers can race well in the wet, as there is a massive difference between doing a timed lap and racing ona wet track.
Those drivers who understand the how to find the grip but using different lines, those that can adapt better and faster to the conditions are the ones that can win in the wet despite not having the ultimate one lap qualifying pace.
To me on a wet track, Jenson has just as good a chance of winning as does hamilton in 1st. As does vittel. It will not come down to ultimate pace or fuel stratergy but the other factors i have mentioned.
If the track is dry my suspicion is that ferrari will win pretty easily. They were much faster than Mclaren through the speed track and i think their set up is more of a compremise to allow a better dry race if needed. Renault too followed this route, but to a more extreme ends.
Of the front runners Kimi loked a little ragged and i think he will struggle most out of the top 4. Massa looked good, although he may be carrying a little more fuel, so he is still in contention. Hamilton looked faster than Alsono and seemed to have his pace cover, and i dont think they are more than 1 lap different on fuel. However, although alonso didnt have the ultimate pace, he did look more sure footed and consistnt that hamilton.
It will be an interesting race, if its wet it going to be mighty interesting. The sensible drivers should realise that the race isnt won at the first corner, so i wouldnt be suprised to see alonso happy to tuck in behind hamilton to assess the grip and the same for the ferraris at the start.
Simmo666
29th September 2007, 14:08
That was a mega lap by Hamilton at the end, but all throughout the long runs they made in Qualifying, Alonso had the quicker race pace, so he could cause Lewis some problems. However, if he can't get past then that's all irrelevant. It could be Indy all over again for him.

I think a couple of drivers could be buggered for this one because of the weather. ie, If it doesn't rain, Vettel is buggered because as good as his gridslot is, he has a wet (low downforce) setup. Now hopefully it is wet, to see who can dice it out the best in the wet, and also to see some good action.
It's pretty disappointing to see that even this far into the season, no one has won a race from further back than 3rd on the grid, so hopefully that can change tomorrow.

Well overtaking in thew wet is less complex as you can take a different line into a corner and still have good exit speed.
If i was Ferrari, i would have gambled everything and gievn Kimi a full wet set up. They have nothing to lose really, and im 100% convinced it will be very wet.

WOW, what an entertaining race.
Hamiltons drive was fantastic, a bit hard but fair on the start.
Alonso really struggled in the wet unlike some of the old guard like DC and Webber who both did great.
Kimmi had a brilliant race, especially the overtaking move on DC.
Did Massa take a hit for the team at the end by taking that extra pit stop, allowing Kimmi to score more points?
Anyway great race.

What a GP!
Massa drove a good race in my eyes, he was lieing before Kimi when Massa had 3 stops, and Kimi (and all the rest too) had 1..
Webber.. would've liked soo much him winning the GP, there was a realistic chance. Too bad!
Alonso? Breaking under pressure?
Hamilton, well done.. That's the first hand on the title!
Kubica did a very very good race indeed.. I could see him winning a wet GP next year
and WHAT A FIGHT on the last corners between Massa and Kubica.. Aii, long time ago I've seen something like that. Hope no one gets punished for that because that was real racing!

An exciting grand prix. A deserved win for Lewis Hamilton who drove faultlessly.
What on earth were Ferrari thinking by going for those intermediates? Whether they received an email from the FIA or not all they had to do was look at the track and see it had to be a full wet tyre race. Massa was all over the place but to his credit he kept plugging away and got some points, a fine dice with Kubica at the end, I wish there was more racing like that in F1. Kimi Raikkonen recovered well and it is to Kovalainen's credit that he held his fellow Finn off in the dying laps.
Have to say I was amazed that Jenson Button was able to keep up a good pace for so long with no front wing, really shows his natural ability in those awful conditions.
Congratulations to Adrian Sutil for scoring his and Spyker's first ever championship point!

Congratulations to Hamilton. A championship-winning drive. It wasn't so much that he was good, but that he didn't make any mistakes, and he was the only one.
Alonso's problems began when he came out of the pits behind all those others. From there it was uphill, so it's better that the championship is decided by a mistake while trying to push than a mechanical failure or a collision with another driver.
Alonso seemed kind of relieved and relaxed on Spanish TV afterwards, saying that now there are no complications, he just has to drive and hope for a miracle...
I thought it was a terrible race. It was too wet for drivers to show their skill in driving, more a lottery of who wouldn't go off. Doesn't take anything away from Hamilton's performance, though. Raikkonen drove well too, but once again too little too late from him.

It doesn't happen very often that someone wins against the system.
Why was that emails sent to Ferrari later than it should have been sent?!
Why didn't they delay the race for 1/2 hour instead of running 19 laps behind he SC?! maybe Ferrari would have read the late email and started with the imposed tires?

I thought Hamilton drove incredibly well in those conditions and under the pressure. It's amazing to think that if he beats Alonso in one of the last 2 races he's champion. Will two 4th places be enough? or could Alonso still win on a countback? If two 4th's are enough then he can basically 'cruise' to the title

I know, in fact, that team are an embarrasment to F1 now. Every single team, bar them get the email, but the laws of ethernet and packet transfer seem to cease to exist for the reds. Must be that same awful IT system that let NS send all their info.
And now they have the tenacity to start complaining about it!

I'm sure we're not in possession of all the facts in this matter. In any case, it's not as if it harmed anyone else but Ferrari.
By the way, is any team or driver able to do anything unproven or make the slightest mistake any more without one or more people labelling them cheats, embarrassments, useless, and so on?

TV scheduling. Starting the race half an hour later may not have meant that it finished on laps rather than being a timed race. Having it running (and running to the time set out for the race in all the TV schedules) meant that it would get aired and not wreak havoc to every major broadcaster worldwide.

Villeneuve vs Arnoux Vol2!!
After the European Grand Prix people hailed Alonso as the rainmaster and Hamilton as a clumsy rookie. Now - and even in harder conditions - it was the reverse. ;) Among the four drivers, who had a theoretical shot at the title before this race, Lewis was the only one, who didn't make any mistakes. Nice rise by the Ferrari drivers. They made several errors (Kimi less and Felipe more), but their battles were great to watch. However, Ferrari was the only team that decided for intermediates in such impossible conditions... That's simply incredible, how much they miss a strong leadership at the area of strategy.
Keeping out SC for so long was quite useless. At one point of the "race" it looked like that one is going to win, who pits earlier than others... (as those, who pit later, drop behind under SC conditions). Considering the tough conditions, it's even surprising that in the end the results were quite "normal": six cars out of eight from this year's Top4 teams finished in the points and so would have done Alonso and Heidfeld if they had finished. And as arguably Renault was running with dry setup, then even a more incredible result for them. Webber continues to be the most unluckiest driver on the grid - at one moment I even thought he is going to win...
And even Yamamoto was clearly quicker than Trulli - okay, THAT is not normal any more...

It was a very good race, Kovilainen getting his first poidium and Hamilton getting another win.

 to your analysis, jens. Nice to read some that isn't accusing a team/driver/the FIA of cheating or a grand conspiracy.

Are those e-mails personified? Like, Ferrari gets their own version and Renault gets their own? Why wouldn't they just CC or BC the email to every team? :\

even if Ferrari got the e-mail after the race started, doesn't the weather conditions before the start were enough to change the tyres? c'mon you have to be really dumb to think you can drive with inters on that conditions or think it will get better...
as for the 19-laps safety period..err... what the hell?

No, it's a block email sent to all the teams and interested parties in one go.

Toro Rosso are appealing the decision to give Vitantonio Liuzzi a 25 second penalty for passing Adrian Sutil under yellow flags, costing the Italian a vital point. If the stewards had enough evidence to see that Liuzzi had passed under yellows I really don't see how Toro Rosso can get the decision over turned.

Yes, but you'd have thought they would have known who won the 2003 Brazilian GP after it had finished, so anything's possible!

I know, in fact, that team are an embarrasment to F1 now. Every single team, bar them get the email, but the laws of ethernet and packet transfer seem to cease to exist for the reds. Must be that same awful IT system that let NS send all their info.
According to finnish media, FIA sent the email 12:35 local time and was received by all teams exept Ferrari at 12:37, who had the email at 13:37.
Is the Ferrari email system rubbish or did Ferrari have the wrong time in their clocks? ;)

Have you seriosuly just tried to make it sound like Ferrari recieved the email late, based on what someone from another team said?
Yes, because Symonds had no interest to support Ferrari's case.
Do you have something better than that?!

Maybe they forgot that MS retired at the end of last season!

Well, if the email was sent from one machine, using one particular ISP and sent to a distribution list (a shot in the dark here, but I guess it might be an entry called '2007 F1 Teams') then the only reason for it being delivered late rests with the teams, not the FIA........ and as all teams bar one got it, what does that suggest?

Not got the clocks wrong have they. Clocks, Tyres, Fuel amounts, dossiers. All coming apart at the seams since RB and NS left the ship. Bit sad really

Interesting enough Felipe was doing better in the wet. And was very racy to after that "pit stop"!
Was he? I thought both Kimi and Felipe were excellent in rain yesterday, despite being hugely unlucky and having bad handling cars set for dry-weather and I would give them both a grade of 9 out of 10.
Anyway, the pitstop he did in the late stages was because he needed fuel, not team-orders. Thinking otherwise is stupid.
The Golden Boy has so much luck, it is amazing. But at least the good thing is that Cheater Alonso only has a very small chance of taking the title.
