So sad to hear the bad news i seen his helicopter going over today and couldn't believe it when i got told wot happened... My dad told me he spoke to Colin and his brother Alistair and i never believed him until i went to see Colin release his focus at Lanark after Lanark we went down to Dumfries to watch Colin in the Forest rally and when we where goin to have a look around Colin was parked up in his Focus and he shouted on my dad so we went over and spoke to him and thats when i realised my dad did speak to him... He was such a good role model 4 all the young rally drivers out there... With sadest regrets to all the family... Keep your chin up Alistair for your family and Scotland

Strathclyde police have confirmed that there are no survivors in the crash involving Colin McRae's helicopter but said the fatalities will not be formally identified today.

According to reports, two people have been killed when the helicopter burst into flames and crashed in McRae's estate at Jerviswood, Lanarkshire, in Scotland.

"Around 1610 hours on Saturday, 15 September 2007, emergency services were called to a helicopter crash in Jerviswood, east of the A73 at Lanark," the police said in a statement.

"There are no survivors.

"It is not known how many people were on board at this time and there will be no formal identification of anyone on board this evening.

"The air accident investigation team are en route to establish the cause of the crash."

4 people now believed were on board.

Even the news headlines structured with a seemingly greater degree of cautious discretion seem to be putting forward a very ominous message. :( Again, it looks exceedingly grave. Obviously it's such a recent news release that it is difficult to comment, but this news shuck me bare when I saw the headline that Colin was dead on just casually navigating to the Times website just now.

Colin McRae was one of my near-childhood heroes and to see this news, now? Oh Lord, how you struggle to find the words to express yourself at times, when such events as these occur.

My thoughts are with the families of those involved. Such a sad event.

Let us not forget younger brother Alister McRae.

I too want to send my sincerest condolences on the McRae's loss. Seemingly especially to his wife who must also grieve for the loss of her son, and his dad and brother. Both drivers with the WRC. Jimmy and Alister respectively.

It ain't exactly a great time for Scots into their sport is it. We lost Dunfermline's Ian Porterfield this week and now Lanacshire's Colin McRae; both in tragic circumstances. Ian to colon cancer and Colin to an accident.

But I think that doesn't stop us from remembering them fondly for doing what got them the most love and respect.

This is a great loss to, not just the rallying community, but to other forms of motorsport as well.
They mentioned it on F1 and spoke to DC who was a friend of Colin.

My condolences goes out to all the families and friends of those involved.

In football when a legend passes it is thought a statue is apt. One of Jackie Milburn is outside of St James' Park. One of Brian Clough is in a park in Middlesborough and of Wilf Mannion and George Hardwick outside of The Riverside Stadium. One of Billy Bremner is outside of Elland Road.

But I think a more fitting long-lasting tribute is to name a fund, a hospital ward or a whole hospice after them. Or even have a trophy made which can be awarded out.

I think their should be a place built in the grounds of a hospital near to where he lived which helps people who have lost limbs in accidents recuperate.

:bigcry: Colin was the first driver I saw at a World Rally event. He was in the Focus and I'll never forget the sheer speed he came round the corner. I'd seen WRC cars on national events but it was amazing, he flew sideways into view and it will forever be in my mind. Colin was a great guy and has done great things for the sport.

I'm not quite sure if you think Alister was in the accident or not, but he wasn't. He was in Australia at the time. If I am wrong in assuming that from your post, please just ignore what I said. :)

I'm still stunned. No matter how many times I read or hear it, it doesn't make sense. He was indestructible it seemed. :(

I was never fortunate enough to see him in his prime, but I saw him back in the winter as he threw MK2 Escorts, a Metro 6R4 and a Subaru around the grounds of Lanark cattle market at a motorsport show the family had helped organised. He was a real crowdpleaser. The fact that several thousand people turned up that weekend showed how popular he still was.

I'm sure Lanark and Scotland will honour his memory in an appropriate way. :) As a mate from the area said to me last night in a text: "Shocking stuff, we don't get many champions through here".

Condolences to his family and the families of the others involved.

I'll post here what I put on the condoelences site:

He was the reason I started watching World Rally and when I left I didn't watch it anymore because it wasn't as good without him.

RIP Colin - you will always be known as true Rally Legend and a Sporting hero.

My Prayers go out to the prayers to the families of all involved. Our sadness is miniscule compared to what they are going through.

At least Colin McRae had a fulfulling career, cheated death a number of times, became WDC and was also the people's hero.

There are numerous drivers throughout motorsport who had their careers cut short :(

Yet tragic circumstances to friends and loved ones of the McRae family. My condolences goes to them.

At least Colin McRae had a fulfulling career.

All the more reason to celebrate that in a more permenant form!

They do it in football all the time. Never in any other sport. Especially motorsport.

But think about it. Of all the other greats like Senna, Villeneuve (Gilles not Jaques) or Fangio in F1, Burns or Clarke in the WRC and of course our own dear Wil here in the BTCC who have died, considering the contribution they made, do they have anything that is a permenant tribute to them? Nothing to my knowledge.

The exceptionally horrible circustances of poor Colin's death should be enough to warrant some fitting tribute to the life of one of our greatest, if not the greatest, motorsport drivers we have produced. Shouldn't it?

RIP Colin. You will always and forever be in our hearts.

There are several Jim Clark memorials in Scotland and in Germany and I assume there will definitely be something for Gilles Villeneuve, Fangio and Senna also.

There are bronze statues of Senna and Fangio Donington Park, and I'm sure that both drivers will be honoured similiarly in South America.

As for Gilles, there is a museum in his honour in Quebec, and a statue (or a bust) at the entrance to Maranello.

I'm sure that, in time, there will be a fitting tribute to Colin McRae.
