Haven't played this game for ages, but got it out at the weekend. Okay the graphics are dated but what a great game. The stages are fantastic, did New Zealand in the Ibiza Kit Car, on expert level. Came 8th top F2 runner. How good are the NZ stages? Really fast and flowing, can't believe they've never included them in any of the later games, yet include USA. Then started Indonesia, and had forgotten how good the night stages on this game are. Then watched my brother doing his impression of Chris Atkinson, in Corsica,..

Brilliant game indeed. They had put a lot of thought into that and made sure it wasn't like the usual arcade games, so you get narrow stages where you have to be accurate with your braking points etc.
My favourite stages are the UK ones.
I must admit I haven't played very recent rally games but the later Colin McRae ones seemed very arcade in comparison.

Forest of Bowland in fog, followed by Dolgellau at night and raining. Nothing in the later games comes close.

OK now we have some interest, can we get this game going on XP? Where are the patches, please?

I got it in a mistake at Game - had the box and boolet for CMR2, and got given the wrong disc! CMR1 is a pretty good agme, tho.

It is enjoyable-Monte stages quite fun as well. And I like the old school escort and lancer...

The Monte stages are probably the best stages I have played on any rally game.
I still wonder how the game turned into such piece of .... from the 3rd version onwards

If only the MK2 would make longer slides and the S1 would sound like the real one, it would be perfect. :D
I think I'm going to play the game tomorrow. :p :

The game is 9 years old and is still providing entertainment. Just completed Corsica in Expert level in the Skoda Felicia Kit car, placed 9th, but top F2, though I was 5th quckest in the night stage.

I always liked driving the Megane at Corsica, you could really trouble the WRCars there.
NZ is great fun, as basically are the lot of them.
CMR1 was the best, CMR2 was a very good game, but just not the 'same', if you get what i mean.....from then on it's just been complete rubbish.

CMR1 was probably the first proper 'Rally' game, as opposed to V-Rally 97 which was more Rallycross. Agree that none of the rest had that 'something' that the first one did. Think it was the 2 stages followed by service, and quite often the 2 stages required different set ups, so a compromise was needed. A lot of the later games didn't have this, just 1 stage then service. Corsica had 3 stages back to back in fact.

I was at a Q&A session with Colin McRae on Sunday, and he was talking about the rally games and that he personally had quite a large involvement in the development of the original game, but not the subsequent ones.

Which after thinking about it, is significant. The sequels aren't as 'Rally like' as the first one. Which is why people are still playing it 9 years on.

CMR1 had great stages but I felt it was shaded by Mobil1 Rally Championship that had 25+ cars to choose from and awesome stages.

YYYYYEEEEEEEEEESSSSS, I've just won the expert championship 8 years after having started playing. :D I used the Quattro because I can't do it in a WRC, I'm too slow. :p The stages are very narrow compared to what I'm used to and it took me some time to get used to. I had the impression I was going so slow and still broke my own records.
