Imagine what a 3-dimensional bar code system would be like - the reader would be intelligent enough to read the whole object! So you could... scan people...

But it has information encoded in only in 1-dimension (horizontal). 2-dimensional bar codes have information in 2-dimensions (horizontal and vertical).
