View Full Version : Fortunate Son - Sensorship?

I was searching for the lyrics of Creedence Clearwater Revival's song "Fortunate Son". I had always thought they sang "And when you ask them, how much should we KILL, oh, they only answer, more, more, more, yoh." But some sites say the lyrics were "And when you ask them, "How much should we GIVE?"
Ooh, they only answer More! more! more! yoh." The search gave results for both:

Which one was it?

I checked my iPod when I read this this morning and played the song.

Some folks inherit star spangled eyes,
Ooh, they send you down to war, Lord,
And when you ask them, "How much should we give?"
Ooh, they only answer more, more, more, yo.

Since I ripped the track from the vinyl which is a double A-side with Down On the Corner (Fantasy Label (c) 1969) then I can only assume that if it was censored then it was done before the disc was pressed - in which case I'll need further proof.

This look suspiciously like a veteran's group trying (rather unsucessfully) to push a political barrow and I'm afraid that it aint working.

Well, I could swear the version they've played on Finnish radio said "kill".

There are two more sites that say it's "kill", but that's all:

My father used to have CCR Vinyls (Used, because I took them from him ;) , in the Vinyl it is "Give" and I have gone to a couple of John Fogerty concerts, both times I have heard clearly "Give".

It's definitely "Give" :) No censorship at all! Just paranoia :p

I have the vinyl and the CD copies and in both cases it is give, it makes sense since the lyrics talk about silver spoons in hand, house looking like a rummage sale and so on....

Great song by the way

That part talks about sending you to war, so I think "kill" would make at least as much sense:

Some folks inherit star spangled eyes,
Ooh, they send you down to war, Lord,
And when you ask them, "How much should we give?"
Ooh, they only answer more, more, more, yo.

hate to show my age, but this song was about people avoiding the draft because they were sons of influential people.

How should we give was about some giving while others hid behind their parents.

I always consult this place whenever I hear lyrics wrong..:

as Jimi Hendrix would say....S'cuse me, while I kiss this guy...

On most studio recordings, it is "give". However, like many other bands and artists, some changes are made to lyrics and even the music during live shows that may also be recorded for release.

I don't think Neil Young has ever done "Like a Hurricane" the same way twice in his whole life.

It is most definately "give" but of course, Eki has to find the evil US conspiracy behind everything.....

Try this site:

http://www.johnfogerty.com/news.html

You'll have to register to join the "Community" but I'm sure there are enough diehards at that site to give you the straight dope. I find it hard to believe a man like John Fogerty would be silent about something like this for over 28 years.
