Aww...I'll be going to the practice session tomorrow and was really hoping to see Nicky Grist. Rally legend Colin McRae will have to do... ;)

Has anyone taken a look at the event rules? It seems like it's a tournament style bracket, with the winner of each super special round advancing to the next round. I appreciate that they want to present a format of rallying that makes sense to Americans, but that is hardly rallying. Oh, well. I guess the organizers didn't see a lot of financial sense to run a dozen gravel stages in a remote location without spectators.

Anyway, I'll be there to give rallying the support it deserves. Maybe I'll see some of you there. (You can spot me in my lucky Subaru hat.)

The rally event doesn't take place until Sunday afternoon local time. It'll air live on ABC and ESPN2-HD, I believe.
I've gone to both practice sessions, and there haven't been any major incidents to report. A few scrapes and bumps, here and there. I can report that Colin McRae is the fastest. And he was really kind about signing autographs and chatting. I'll post the pic on my blog tomorrow.

The rally cars will be on in the ABC portion tomorrow.

Ramana Lagemann rolled his EVO8 on Tuesday at Jump practice but has the car straight enough (although its not that pretty...).

Antione L'Estage, defending Canadian Champion, rolled on the tarmac yesterday (mandatory gravel tires on tarmac makes things interesting) but I haven't heard if there was cage damage, doesn't look like it from the crash photos so if they can get it straight enough he'll be there.

Rockstar is sponsoring both SYMS drivers, expect Tanner to go deep.

Otis Dimiters should be in LA as a back up driver should a car not be able to take the start, and they may be lining up a second back up driver just in case.

You don't live in the US.

It sounds all good and well to bring in lots of WRC drivers save for one point.

The X Games is one of THE key factors in the formation of serious privateer teams in the US. With only one factory team serious privateers are vital for a competitive championship. IF we had a vibrant championship with lots of sponsorship having WRC drivers would add a unique element to the mix but since we are building a vibrant championship anything we can do to get more teams better funding is critical.


Personally, I like seeing the local "heroes" that I can call on the phone or go up to and have a 10 minute chat with at US events then celebrities that are going to be here for a couple of days then gone for a year...

For the same reasons your american casual motorsports fan doesnt know who Panizzi, Galli or Gronholm is, is same reason you don't know who Boris Said, Ron Fellows and Robbie Gordon are.

Hell, even I sat next to Galli on a flight back from Sweden once years ago and I didnt know till later who he was.

Yes. But that is generations apart from today's potential WRC audience here. Ask any american new age WRC geek here and the majority couldn't fathom that we actually had a WRC round here back then.

Just watched the X games Finals! It was great with what a crash with colin! :p and then the dq of block haha good stuff, great to watch something different compared to the SSS's of WRC, maybe it was the camera work with making the sport XTREME!! :p

Block didn't get DQed, Travis Pastrana did (and really it was an automatic forfeit of the heat, not exactly a DQ, DQ was the term used on the radios to explain the decision and would be applied in the sense that he was ruled to not be elligible to proceed on to the next round, maybe Bjorn240 can explain the nuances of the terminology...)...

It's a TV show... 1/2 the organizers told us to go to the final. 1/2 told us we were eliminated from competition. Then we raced for bronze. Who knows what the rules were. It's a TV show...

(Also, I advised the course design was dangerous to ESPN, but no changes were made to the finish - they did add water barriers in front of the concrete exit ramps).

Anyway, happy to come away with a medal and a little bit of $. Easiest job I ever had - just gave Travis the splits. No notes. Told him if he couldn't remember 30 corners in a car park, he had bigger problems than I could resolve. :)

As far as I know, Travis is doing 9 rounds of the Rally America Championship and 6 rounds of the PWRC, sponsored by SOA and is trying to get together money to do an additional 5-8 rallies in Europe.
