This will mean nothing to anyone who's never lived in Australia but here goes

Basically one of Australias most well known radio identities Stan Zemanek died just a few days ago from cancer. Basically he was famous for being very much a a Jeremy Clarksonesque figure who was outspoken in the extreme and very forceful in the way he put his opinions across. He was a radio personality as well as the host of a show called Beauty and the Beast where there were 4 women and him and they had arguments and it was entertaining (no one wants to see a show where 5 people just agree with each other). So now Mike Carlton who is a lot less well known and disliked him with a passion apparently came across and said some extremely nasty things about him just prior to his funeral.

I find it amazing that people are sticking up for this pool of slime. Some may recall that I stood up for Germain Greer when she said it wasn't surprising that Steve Irwin died this way he did (well it bloody well wasn't suprising was it? :mark: ) but this is attack on a dead man is uncalled for and I hope Mike Carlton loses his job for this. To take pleasure and seemingly be happy about someone's passing (unless we're talking a Hitler/Mugabe figure) is just wrong in the extreme non?

Mike Carlton was foolish and rather stupid in broadcasting that over the radio, and he shouldn't have said it, not to mention it was quite a callous thing to do/say. But personally I'm not surprised that such a contraversial figure is not off-limits to some people as a "joke" topic even in death, similarly with Steve Irwin.

That's pretty rediculous. :)

I can't believe you are trying to compare Zemanek with Clarkson! I'll say no more as I don't want to speak ill of the dead.

Carlton's comments didn't seem to raise much of a stir in anything other than the murdoch owned papers, remembering of course that Carlton also writes for the smh.

Zemanek was also a favourite of little johnny and guess which newspaper he regards as his favourite?

You see the lovable Clarkson on Top Gear. Over here he writes in papers and such and isn't quite as lovable as the TV Clarkson ;)

I think it goes beyond who's whose favourite and it comes down to common decency.

Not all people think Carlton was in the wrong. see this link for a variety of views, even if it is from the tele!

I read the smh and the canberra times today and neither made any mention of the above story and they both lead with stories on the spat between Howard and Costello.

By the way I've seen lot's of stuff that Clarkson has written, not just his appearances on Top Gear.

The thing is a lot of people here think that driving while using a mobile phone is OK so the public aren't necessary the best judge of right and wrong. It's just common (or uncommon perhaps?) decency not to make such rude and senseless comments about a recently deceased person on the day of his funeral. If you read the comments read the one about Sir Donald Bradman and you'll see how a proper person reacts to the death of someone they don't like.

Sorry you have lost me, it's been along day at work, also I need a link for the Bradman reference, it may be late but I can't find any mention on this link
http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/comments/0,22058,22099006-5001021,00.html.

From a quick count I see that about 16 or so comments out of the 45 were anti Carlton. A lot of the others seem to agree with what Carlton had to say.

On the comments page I linked to search for Bradman :)

Basically someone Bradman didn't like died and when he was asked what he thought he said "No comment"

That's what he should have said
