Me and my mates were planning to see someone else but changed our minds and decided to get some food at the Park stage and check out the special guests. We were stunned when Thom introduced himself and watching the sun go down while listening to the set was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life, I still can't quite believe it. When they finished the last track (Street Spirit) me and my mates looked at each other and we all had tears in our eyes, it was genuinely one of the most moving gigs that I've ever witnessed.

I recorded BBC coverage of the Muse set on Saturday. I always think that the Absolution Tour was better than the current one but they did look on fire on Saturday. Citezen Erased was incredible.

Yeah they were pretty good. I may have been a bit drunk and dressed as an alien so didn't really see a lot. We were about 5 rows from the front so spent most of our time jumping about like idiots, especially as they barely slowed a slow track.

TBH though I preferred Gorillaz. Lots of people moaned but I thought they were fantastic, just doing songs that people didn't recognise. There were a few more bits but seeing Thom Yorke and then Gorillaz in the same evening was immense.

Another good act was Dan Mangan. Me and a mate just wanted some shade so went to John Peel tent and saw a great performance. Really beautiful songs and the bloke had an infectious grin. Elliott Smith (1969-2003) was basically America's answer to Nick Drake in that both of their lyrical content were essentially the same (depression, angst, etc.) and they were both masters of the "singer-songwriter" format of folk music (although Smith was considered to be indie folk/folk rock). Like Drake, Elliott Smith primarily focused on guitar, even though he played piano, bass, harmonica, and other instruments as well. Smith's motif was his vocal style; he had a very whispery and thin sounding delivery and would use multi-tracking to create layers of vocals, textures, and harmonies. Finally, like Drake, Elliott Smith's career was, for the most part, obscure until after his death (from self-inflicted stab wounds to his chest) and most of his success came posthumously. However, he did have some commercial fame when he was alive: he was most famous for a track called "Miss Misery" which was featured in the soundtrack for Good Will Hunting (1997) and was nominated for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards the following year.

As far as recommendations go, you can give that track "Miss Misery" a listen for starters. If you are interested in entire albums, you can try his self-titled album (1995), Either/Or (1997), XO (1998), and From a Basement on the Hill (2004). All those of those four albums are good in my opinion and all four have received critical acclaim.

Classic rock - my "Big Three" are Led Zep, Black Sabbath, and Rush. Big Beatles fan too.

"Mainstrem rock/metal" for lack of a better term - Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Weezer (my guilty pleasure band).

I listen to them because they are kind of a thrash/Frank Zappa hybrid and their lyrics are usually political.

My main focuses are doom metal, stoner rock, and thrash metal, with detours all over the place:

Afro-jazz (Fela Kuti, aka "The Man")
Jazz in general - Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, etc
Classic rock - my "Big Three" are Led Zep, Black Sabbath, and Rush. Big Beatles fan too.
Extreme Metal - Napalm Death, Soilent Green, Kataklysm
"Mainstrem rock/metal" for lack of a better term - Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Weezer (my guilty pleasure band).

Strangely, the Christmas music I listen to is all stuff from the 50's & 60's - Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Percy Faith, Gene Autry, Jim Reeves, Burl Ives, Vince Guaraldi, The Andrew Sisters, etc.

I compliment you for having a versatile taste in music (Although I have to admit, I think you can do much better than Weezer, but each to his/her own, right?). I feel like I'm an eclectic listener as well: I mostly like heavy/aggressive music like those alternative metal/rock bands I listed, along with "truer-sounding metal" like Metallica, Slayer, Opeth, Pantera, Mastodon, Machine Head, Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, etc. But I really enjoy stuff like Aphex Twin (Ambient Techno), Oasis (Britpop), Jaco Pastorius (Jazz Fusion), Mike Patton (various genres), Wu-Tang Clan (Hardcore Hip-Hop), Sublime (Ska Punk), Bad Religion (Melodic Punk), Dillinger Escape Plan (Hardcore Metal), Offspring (Pop Punk), Elliott Smith (Indie Folk)... and, of course, your own music, Ms. Norah Jones!.

I was also going to mention that I like Allman Brothers Band, Elton John, David Bowie, and King Crimson a lot as well.

As of late, I've been trying to open myself up to classical music (everything in between early and contemporary), country (real country, not pop-country like Tim McGraw, Garth Brooks, Lady Antebellum, Taylor Swift, Faith Hill, Shania Twain, Carrie Underwood, etc.), blues, and soul music (so far, I've only grasped Ray Charles). I find these genres to be an acquired taste and difficult to grasp, but I feel the desire to keep listening in order to grasp them. The main genre of I have difficulty listening to is reggae music, but I'm not sure why. Please, recommend me some reggae music other than the obvious Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer, as that is all I ever hear about in the conversation of reggae music. I know rocksteady and ska were precursors to reggae, and that dancehall, dub, ragga, and other genres are spin-offs of reggae, so you can include musicians from these genres as well.

Rhapsody- Dawn of Victory. Thought I'd give them a try, this is the cheesiest, most cringe worthy speed/power metal I've ever heard!

Those bands are what is known as doom death (I guess) and I never got into them. I thought I would like Anathema after their guitarist hooked up with Trouble's Eric Wagner for that Lid side project (yes, I must be one of a few to own the album). But the last time I listened to them I wasn't too excited.

Symphonic Metal is not for me. My younger brother is a Symphony X fan and I just can't get into them.

Yeah, Crosby, Stills, and Nash are considered folk rock. Their music also reflected the counterculture of the early 1960s to mid 1970s with anti-establisment themes and protests against the Vietnam War. In regards to flok music, I take it you probably like the music people like Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Cat Stevens, etc. as well?

If you like political/anti-establishment music, do you also like Rage Against the Machine? I don't consider them a "rap band", as the actual music they play sounds more like a fusion of metal, punk, and industrial music; the Zach de la Rocha (the vocalist) to me is the only rap element for that band. Also, do you like punk rock bands like Bad Religion, NOFX, Dropkick Murphys, etc.?

For political rap groups, have you ever heard of Immortal Technique, Dead Prez, or The Coup? I don't think they're as good as Public Enemy, but they nevertheless represent genuine political voices for hip-hop along with P.E.

That's perfectly fine if you don't like country. I have had a difficult time myself trying to grasp this genre as well. For the most part, Johnny Cash is the easiest for me to listen to so far. I've also tried listening to some Hank Williams, Jr. Other than that I've had trouble listening to this kind of music.

I've heard of Bad Brains, but I haven't heard them yet. I'll check that band out in the near future. I was hoping for more purer reggae musician suggestions but that's okay.

Beethoven's great, but so were a lot of classical composers before and after him (Mozart, Bach, Haydn, Strauss, Brahms, etc.). I've also tried to listen to more contemporary classical music like Samuel Barber, Philip Glass, Leonard Bernstein, and the Kronos Quartet. Mr. Glass and his "minimalist" style is the hardest for me to listen to of these modern composers.

I can say I am a fan of Jim Croce.
Yeah, I am a RATM fan as I have a few of their albums but I was never a punk fan, although I do like Jello Biafra's vocal style. :)
The two rap groups I mentioned is enough for me. I have never really gotten into that genre.
I can agree with Johnny Cash as I would like to have his concerts from various prisons, maybe even some Merle Haggard because it is more of an "outlaw" style I think it is called. I guess I think of it as having more of a hard edge.
I especially like Haggard because he played with and personally knew Buddy Holly.

^Most Symphonic Metal is pretty rubbish, basically just a bunch of Nightwish clones, but Epica are amazing. Wouldnt count Symphony X in with them, they were making there classically inspired prog/power metal years before anyone was doing symph.

Anyway, was listening to Ram-Zets Escape, now Bacamarte's Depois Do Fim.

Lenny Krevitz - Fly Away

For the record: most of my musical interest lies in traditional music (Irish, American Old-Time, Scottish) but a heavy fraction is also jazz (swing and dixieland, not so much be-bop), blues (Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters), singer/songwriter (David Gray), techno/ambient (The Prodigy, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Mogwai) and reggae/ska (The Specials, Madness, The Selecter, Taj Mahal).

I also do a lot of listening to classic rock (Clapton, Young, Dylan and, perhaps most importantly, J.J. Cale) and good pop (Michael Jackson, The Bangles, anything out of the 80s really).

I've never warmed to classical music and have come to accept my lack of interest in the genre after I studied it for a few months and aquired and understanding for it. You can't like everything. Another genre I haven't really got a heart for is heavy metal and also much of the new pop sh!t that is churned out on the airwaves these days.

I'm a musician myself and music is my main interest in life, more so than motorsport :cheese:
