Come on then, it's not all about the Euros, whose been doing what in the transfer window? Exeter have realeased a few, some of whom went straight to local team Torquay. Got in quite a few decent conference players that were out of contract and just strengthened the squad in general.

My personal favourite signing is Manny Panther from York, a strong central midfielder. Mind you the only reason I like him is because of the chant "He's tall, he's quick, his name's a porno flick, Emmanuel, Emmanuel" :D

All the major transfers will happen after the Euros ;)
And It IS all about the Euros except for the English I guess :p :

Barcelona have already bought Dani Alves (Sevilla), Gerard Pique (Man U) and Seydou Keita (Sevilla) to firm up the defense and midfield.

Zambrotta has gone to Milan and pretty sure Deco is on his way to Inter/Chelsea, Eto'o will be going to Inter/Milan and who knows where Ronaldinho is going to be....

Berbatov likely to be going to Barca but maybe not since Et'o declined to go to Spurs. Mario Gomez is another name mentioned but he better show he is a good striker....not liking what I am seeing in Euro 08 :)

Sunderland's former stopper and goal-keeping coach Tim Carter has been found dead in Manchester.

Tim played 50 games for the Black Cats with Tony Norman in the early 90's and had just been appointed academy's goalkeeping coach after being the first teams coach till the arrival of ex-Manchester United keeper Raimond van der Gouw in 2007 and had coaches the Estonian national side on a part time basis. Something that may or may not have aided in the development of Mart "Poominator" Poom as a top keeper for SAFC until his departure to Arsenal where he was recently sold to Watford.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7467056.stm

My condolences as a Black Cats fan are with his family, Sunderland AFC and his colleagues at the Academy of Light where he worked in Sunderland AFC at this tragic time.

RIP Tim Carter. :(

No it isn't suspicious.

Though, according to Ceefax news (or was it Teletext) the rozzers think he hanged himself (almost like Mark Speight all over again). Though as far as I know nothing bad was happening in his life. So I am worried as to what he wasn't telling.

I mean he had just been made the academy's goalkeeping coach. OK it isn't the first team but the academy boys are a credit to the club. They are excellent. The semifinal of the FA Youth Cup and I think they won the league too. I wasn't a bad step-down at all so that relocation isn't to blame.

Hi everyone, I haven't posted on here for a while.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas to as why the french natioal squad have been on a steady declie ever since winning the World Cup way back in 1998.

I have a few ideas to as why this happened, i.e players retiring, and also more recently old players, i.e. Thuram and Makelele continuing to play even though they are past thier sell-by-date during Euro 2008.
Hopefully, by posting on here i could possibly get a few more ideas and include them in my 6000 word essay i have to write about it :( .

I would appreciate any feedback in either french or english :) :) :)

Thanks a bunch

I never liked french football except for the golden generation who played at World Cup 1982 in Spain: Platini, Tigana, Tresor, Giresse, Six, Rocheteau, Bossis..... These guys knew how to play.

But werent they knocked out in Euro 2000 and then again in Euro 2004 by teams on paper, France should have beaten easily.

I beliveve that ever since winning the World Cup in 1998 they have been in a slow decline, either because key players retiring and not bringing enough new blood in? I believe they managed to get to the World Cup Final in 2006 due to there sheer experience and ability to keep calm under extreme pressure and not shher skill alone.

As long as the ball is round papers and football will be incompatible. Look at Netherlands who qualified at this edition with the least number of goals from all teams ( not to mention they lost a match against Belarus ) and now they scored loads of goals.
Who credited Turkey and Russia ( who was lucky to qualify at Euro ) a month ago?
I don't know if there is a team who can dominate football for years. It's still a game and hazard have a role to play....
It's not everytime that the team who plays better has the chance to win.

I thought that the problem may be in your national championship: not too many money involved or too many foreigners. But then I think again of Russia and its base of selection.....

one could say that French football was in decline since 1984 when they won the European championships. They only managed to reach the WC semi-final in 1986, failed to qualify for another tournament until 1992. The cycle comes and goes.

Rollo

French football is suffering the same echoes as England experienced post 1966. In both cases, the world's "best nation" won on home some and due to a combination of coaching staff and the coming together of a "golden generation" they were able to win the World Cup and subsequently a Euro tournament.

Fundamentally the FFF suffers from the same problem that England does as do clubs like Liverpool and Chelsea. They've been the best at one and will throw zillions of moneys at the problem and never realise that it it's an underlying problem. Basically it requires a core of close knit staff, something which Man Utd has had for a long time as has the DFB.

Ironically, Brazil's footballing prowess is not built from its wealth but the fact that for some kids in the favellas, it's their only way out, so they "train" practically every other day.

some transfer news...
Deco is now a Chelsea player...Barca sold him for 10m Euros, and now wait for offers for Ronaldinho and Etoo...I still believe they should not sell off Etoo unless then can get somebody like David Villa or Guiza. (proven la liga scorers) but they seem to be going for Adebayor who is a bit overhyped and please don't make it an Arsenal attack at Camp Nou!!!!
Daniel Alves also joins from Sevilla now that Zambrotta & Thuram are gone..
Another rumour is Shevchenko on loan to Barca...could be possible now that they have business open with Chelsea..maybe Ronaldinho will tempt them..

Lampard might be moving to join his friend Mourinho at Inter...and looks like C Ronaldo might still be going to Madrid, atleast Marca thinks they have a deal.

Wonder who the Brits will hype up next if their golden boy leaves...

I believe they managed to get to the World Cup Final in 2006 due to there sheer experience and ability to keep calm under extreme pressure and not shher skill alone.

Well they didnt actually get knocked out of euro 2000...... because they won the thing :p : It was that rather exciting finish against Italy, Wiltord equaliser last minute, Trezuguet winner in extra time, the golden goal as it was known, Holding both the european championship and the world cup at the same time, was a golden time in french football.

however, i feel that this was rather fortunate, and possibly came at the wrong time for the national side. There are a number of things that could be the decline for the national side, things such as the french ligue 1. I know there are a lot of french players like Wiltord, Henry, Vieria, Pires, Thuram, Makelele, etc who played in the big leagues like the premiership and la liga. The thing is, the French league isnt really known for its high quality of football. I believe i am right in saying that Lyon practicuarly dominate the french league, and have been for a few years now. Theres no competition for them, its the same team winning the league all the time, the likes of Marseille, PSG, Auxerre either put up a challenge at the start of the season and then fade away during the mid part, or dont put up a challenge at all and end up closer to relegation than where they should be at the top. PSG are a brilliant example of that, great history, but in the last couple of years have really struggled under the lieks of Le Guen to stay in the top flight. I feel that the big french players of the next generation do need to move elsewhere to the big clubs in order to experience the high level of football they need to to become a great player, which is why im rather glad nasri recently moved to arsenal because i feel if theres anywhere hes going to become a great player, it is under the brilliant coaching of arsene Wenger. But the problem is, a lot of players rightly stay loyal to their clubs, but are playing in a competition which can sometimes be below the standard they need to be playing at. I honestly think the eridevisie (Dutch league) is more competitive than the french one. Also, you may not be guaranteed great french players in the future, who are going to move to bigger clubs, so are going to have to develop their talent in the french league, and that is difficult for them, because the standard in a major competition is so much higher than a league game. You dont see many french teams challenging in the big tournaments like the champions league or the UEFA cup, Lyon are the only one i can think of who have got close. Its that high level of competition rising stars of the future need to be able to deal with, and basically the clubs dont have the foundations to give them that, which delays their development in their club surroundings, and delays their potential on the international scene, making a weakened french side coming up in the next generation.

But its not just the development of players that needs to be focused on, its the loss of world class players as well. I mean, how are France meant to replace someone of the fantastic stature and skill of zinedine Zidane? In both France 98 and Euro 2000, he played a key part in winning both tournaments, and showed flashes of brilliance at germany 2006. Ok, he was a bit of a jerk in the final to go headbutt matterazi, whatever his reasons, but there was no doubting he was one of the great players of all time. There are only 2 or 3 players of Zidanes quality that may come to an international side in a lifetime, if that. When you lose a player to retirement of that quality, your side is bound to feel the effects. Obviously, they have lost other players like Thuram and Vieria at critical times, but when you have a team of the quality of World cup 98 and euro 2000, its always difficult to maintain that high standard. All international sides have their problems, even Brazil, no matter how many times theyve won the world cup, they dont very often win Copa America, or qualify as the best country from South america, its how they perform in the tournaments, their setup is immense in major tournaments, and they are always well prepared.

One final thought for you, so France havent done that well recently, but its not very long since we were talking about the demise of Total football, which for those who dont know what it is, Dutch football. It was 1988 the last time Dutch Football had something to shout about, and 1998 the last time they performed of note in a major tournament. A lot of tabloids focused on how they just made Euro 2008, being beaten even by romania, and how dutch football was boring and wasnt as brilliant anymore. Even the great Marco Van Basten said that. But just look at how they responded this summer, Dominant victories 3-0 against Italy, and 4-1 against France. The skill, the brilliance, the flowing football, the quality goals. Ok so they didnt win it, but they showed that they had the quality to go on and win this tournament, and as soon as they know how to perform in every game like that, they will win a major tournament again. and im confident they will do it again, because i see the potential in the side. Now it may not be obvious that france are heading that way, but there will be another golden generation that will come through eventually, Its been 44 years since spain won anything before Euro 2008, and at this World Cup 2010, it will be 44 years since england won anything (im hoping its an omen :p : ) But honestly i believe that this may not be the demise of French International Football, but preparation for the next generation to dominate as in 1998 and 2000. It could be 10 years, it could be 50 years, but there is no doubt that France will be a major force again in football.

Hopefully that will give you something to think about, but im sure there are many people who will have conflicting views about it, Im not really a writer at all, but i do liek to think i know a bit about football. I suggest you do some research into it as well if you've got 6000 words to write about it :) good luck :)

Ronaldinho has been signed by Milan.
Finally this era of Barcelona is over....Now that Eto'o will also leave it is leaving me a bit sad as these 2 guys were the catalysts to the turn around in fortunes in 2004-5 season.

2 La Ligas, 1 Champions League..thank you Ronaldinho for your amazing skill!

I just hope Guardiola isn't as stupid as to buy Adebayor now (heard he is offering Eto'o AND 20 million euros, if true its crazy)

I still dont rate Liverpool's chances in the title race. It seems to be the same story every season - they underachieve and Rafa feels he needs 4 or 5 players to challenge for the Prem. Never mind TV friendlies, I've just come back from my first of the season, watching Exeter get a 1-1 draw against FA Cup Winners and UEFA Cup team Portsmouth. First half Pompey even had a decent side out including (I think) Mendes, Campbell, James and Defoe. They managed to score a penalty (think it was deserved), although was poorly taken by Defoe.

Fairly even game but Defoe missed some sitters and really should have had a hat-trick. Second half was a weeker side but still had Primus, Nugent and Muntari that I'm aware of. Really even game and City scored a decent goal, Sir Rob Edwards walking it through the defence to finish coolly. Nice start to the season and has left me in high spirits, especially after the 40 minutes I got to see of new signing Marcus Stewart  :D

It was a good test for both teams but it was a shame about the lack of goals. I think United missed the cutting edge of Rooney/Ronaldo/Nani etc. I expected a low scoring game because I think our teams have two of the best defences in Europe and it showed.

As you say Pino there are a few floppy haired youngsters in the United squad who catch the eye. The Brazilian Da Silva twins who play both full back positions look good prospects.

United are quite good at having prospects who fail to turn into decent players. I can only think of O'Shea (off the top of my head) as a half decent player from the youth system in the last ten or so years (although the list of Scholes, Beckham, Nevilles etc was impressive). Personally I'd rate Tottenham's youf system more but they have a tendancy to sell on rather than keeping them in the team, as with your own Michael Carrick who was seriously overpriced at £18mil.

We on the other hand have a much better young player setup with amazing names like Moxey, Friend and Sercombe. Not to forget inspired imports like Harley and Taylor.

Carrick was from the West Ham youth system. The players they brought through the ranks were truely exceptional - and they sold every single one of them. I also dont think Carrick looks too bad for the money after his two seasons with United.

I dont expect much from United youth players as they dont get games. The sides we've put out in Carling Cup games have showed we really have nothing outside of the first team.

Yeah I think United fans have to be when you look at last season. I'm under no illusions we wouldn't have won a thing without Ronaldo last season.

Obviously he's been disrespectful off the pitch and needs to score a few goals to make peace with the fans. If he plays half as well as last year he is still worth holding on to. He wont get close to the 42 he scored last season.

Well the final whistle has just blown on Exeter's first league game since May 3rd 2003 and it was a respectable 1-1 draw against Darlington. Went 1-0 down on 40 minutes through a penalty (radio commentary believed it was justified), but a battling 2nd half performance saw us pull one back and it sounded like Exeter were the better side for much of the 2nd half.

NIce to be back in the league, especially with a point, but things now turn to the Carling Cup and a tricky tie at home against Southampton on Tuesday evening

So CL group stage is in the bag and a good start to competitive matches for this season, plus the great news that Pep Guardiola finally came to his senses and cleared that Eto'o will stay this year.

Immediately the guy scored 2 goals last night, I think he is going to be really fired up this season with Henry too wanting to prove a point.

I have not liked the new signings much (I think Hleb is over-rated, Keita is decent) and they messed up with Arshavin and Silva who would have been great. Alves could be the only really good signing for Barca.

Fenerbahce had a 2-2 draw too! so both Turkish teams have a shot as do Bucharest of course.

I think my beloved side, SAFC, will do very well indeed. We have strengthened, I think the form of the midfield will be very important as we have done so (strenghened) there the greatest, and I think the names we have brough in will make us more competitive where we weren't last season.

If anyone's interested, York City's anthrax scare yesterday turned out to be powdered-up aspirin or similar, sent in a package to the ex boss Doug Craig (didn't he leave about four years ago? :mark: ) by some as yet unknown loony.

Today their security guy, who I spent this morning with at an auction, is expecting a bomb scare during the match.

It's pathetic - some sad person wasted thousands of police pounds and everyone's time. However, better a small club that one of the big ones.

MrJan
17th August 2008, 18:22
However, better a small club that one of the big ones.

Wrong. Big clubs can afford to have things like this happen, small clubs need every bit of income possible. The scare probably means a larger police prescence which will be paid for by the club. Also there will probably be a drop in attendance which will harm income even more.
As long as it's only a scare then it'll have less effect on a Man United or Chelsea. Football for most teams in the UK is a hand to mouth existence and a lot of clubs are struggling (see Rotherham, Bournemouth and Luton in league 2).

As the supporter of a team who is only in existence through bloody mindedness, hard work and a bit of luck (playing Man U in the FA Cup saved Exeter) I fully sympathise with teams that are in the financial doldrums and I don't think that numpties posting Asprin can help too much

On the bright side, Exeter played very well yesterday and I feel confident about the season ahead, even if the scoreline doesn't show it :mark:

Blackpool managed to scrape a 1-1 draw with the Canaries and barely deserved to get even that.

Burgess nailed a penalty against the run of play and Norwich equalised in short succession and then spent the last half hour walking through the defences like they weren't there. There must have been a forcefield around the goals.

Also, can someone explain this:
Why is it that in Oz, we can get the Premier League and the Championship on cable telly as well as the Conference and the Conference North and South (on Setanta)? In terms of the football league ladder, that's tiers 1 & 2 - 5 & 6 but not 3 or 4.
This makes little to no sense.

If they are stupid enough to offer the money then why not. Was it the same country that Eto'o went and had talks with who were also offering him silly money recently?

If I was in the twilight of my career and was offered millions to go and play somewhere for a year or two I'd be there like a shot.

All the usual suspects got to the group stage...
Atl Madrid 4-0 to overturn Schalke's 1-0 lead from leg1...They do have a great attack with Aguero & Forlan.
Arsenal won easily but Liverpool scraped through 1-0 in extra time!
Juve and Barca went through although they drew and lost respectively :s
Bucharest are in again after they won 3-2 aggr against Galatasaray but Fenerbahce did win so we have one Turkish team.

There are couple of new teams in CL group stage but I liked this name best!
Anorthosis Famagusta :cheese: sadly they beat ody's Oylmpiacos!
Sounds more like a metal band that club name...from Cyprus.

David Villa signed for 6 yrs with.....Valencia again

Bad start to La Liga last night for Barcelona...
watched the game as it was at a decent time for me (10.30pm) svs Numancia and they lost 0-1 :(
They had 70% possession but could not score...Henry got subbed as he was really ineffective but Bojan and Etoó both missed headers they should have scored and in injury time a Messi free kick hit the post!
weird tactics by Guardiola though....not much play was happening on left wing (Henry + Abidal) and Alves is supposed to be great on right but didnt show much either....Numancia just put 8 people in the middle of their half and Messi was just running into brick walls most of the time.

They need to change fast as other small teams will attempt the same stuff of not allowing they to play and just sit back.

It was almost like watching the semi-final of CL last year where they had so much of the ball but just could not score.

Real was 0-1 down at the Riazor when I slept but I read just now that they lost 1-2 once again at Deportivo :cheese:

It's also a shame that he probably won't get that much first team football for a while.

He was instrumental in our strong second half of the season last year and has looked good so far this season. Quite good at getting forward and also a solid defender (at our level anyway). He'll look crap in a CCC team for a while I'd have thought but I reckon he's destined for great things.

Well they certainly have big plans. I have no doubt their money will attract top players, but not the ones they listed. Robinho is (and will continue to) come in for huge amount of criticism for his move. He had been completely berated in Brazil for his decision.

http://www.teamtalk.com/football/story/0,16368,1777_4089708,00.html

At least when players went to Chelsea for fat money they could get away with saying they wanted to win trophy's, play for a top quality team etc.

With City that wont be as easy. I'm sure they will be contenders in a few years possibly. Might players be scared for their credibility moving to an overnight power club like Man City?

Despite being a United fan I am happy that a club shows signs of competing with the top 4 in the Premier League. I dont know about anyone else but I dont think City will find it as easy as Chelsea did to make it to the top.

But you say that you are playing good football and already have a fairly decent side but have lacked the tactician to turn that into good results. I don't think that the problem at Newcastle lies with the players but with the way that the team is being run, be it in the back room or gaffers talks it ain't going right and hasn't done for many years and I just don't think that Keegan was the man to turn it around.

Newcastle had a lot of potential just like West Ham did, and both clubs have lost managers who have given them decent starts for the season, both clubs werent in dire form, West ham had their best start for 9 years, Newcastle got a draw at Old Trafford, and 4 points from the first 9 which aint disasterous. The reason managers have left is becasue the board are not in cohesion with the coach who has a right to control who plays for the club and have a working relationship with the club, and if hes not alowed to do that, then its the boards fault for driving them away. You cant just get rid of players for a decent offer without consulting the managers first, its unacceptable in my opinion. I honestly believe that there was no better man than Keegan to get the best out of the crop of players at the club, especially considering the start they had.

I agree with you though about Friend, i followed what hes been doing as his name reguarly came up on my football reports and magazines as a possible star in the game, and its a shame he didnt get the chance to show what hes worth at exeter. He probably wont be ready for a high level of football at wolves at such a young age. Its another DJ campbell story, who went to bham and started ok but lost form and has since moved on i believe to a club of lesser talent because he couldnt cope on the big stage. I hope for Exeters sake it doesnt damage his career reguarly appearing in the reserves.

Internationals this weekend, and it was another drab performance from England as ever, winning 2-0 at andorra. Wales got off to a win as did the republic of ireland, but it was losses for Scotland and NI. Italy scraped through against Cyprus :p : and France lost to Austria :O

Hi Guys,

whats your thoughts on the game last weekend when the new power rich Man City faced the poorer Chelsea FC, what happened to the Robinho show except for the free kick he looked like a schoolboy lost in a plauground, glad we did`nt buy him what a waste of money and his celbration said it all mercenary. Good Luck Man City you will need, pure class showed through, Chelsea showed them what a team that wins League titles and has played in Champions League for the past 10 season looks like even Anelka got a goal.

its going to take time for Man City to get used to all the money, and for a man city side to take full advantage of the talent on offer. Robinho did ok for a debut, you cant complain when he scores, he just needs to regain some sharpness back and he will be deadly. Man City won't automatically be top 4 stuff, but in a couple of years, they could be at least challenging with a good manager at the realm, and good buys made and no deadwood.

Wolves won again at the weekend :D 3-1 away at Charlton, i'm wondering when we will lose our first game in the league this season, my moneys on tomorrow night against Palace :p :

Good to see Albion off the mark finally, and poor poor newcastle, you thought it couldnt get any worse and it does, sooner the whole saga is done and over with the better. It affects the club really badly, and its been seen before.

Plenty too in Italy thats why many of them have come over here eventually, namely a certain Mr Capello.

I think one of the only mercenaries we had was a certain Schevchenko, otherwise we had top professional on Great Wages, these days you get what you pay for watch how many mercenaries go to man city what else they gonna go there for not the weather LOL :p .

at least in the years Abramovich has been at Chelsea we have won many trophies, but we did that before in the Gullit/Vialli days, don`t you remember ????

Don't agree that you get what you pay for, Chelsea have forked out a fortune for mediocre players like SWP, matey from Reading etc. etc. Also as a fan of lower league football I am able to appreciate the ability of our manager in signing people on free transfers or the quality youth system.

You also seem to be a somewhat deluded Chelsea fan as they love signing people for extortianate sums whereas the only person to join Man City since the take over was a certain Robinho who Chelsea were trying to sign anyway. Add to this old Didier who was intent on leaving but suddenly changed his mind (no doubt due to a healthier bank balance) and king of the merceneries Anelka. Not to mention Lampard who certainly isn't with the club for the love of it and Cashley, Wayne Bridge etc. etc. etc.

As for Ashley Cole he is playing as one of our best players at the moment and if he continues he will surpas his arsenal days, Wayne Bridge Good Player and now squad player teams would kill for Squads like ours, Anelka is not a favourite of mine but on his day a dangerous player, and as for Lampard, he has shown loyalty to Chelsea in the past and allthough he got 5 years fair play to him, at the moment the best Midfielder in the League with a certain Deco, do you want me to carry on ????

Barcelona 3-1 Sporting Lisboa
Finally a good scoreline...Marquez with a header, Etoo put in a penalty and Xavi scored a typical goal from a cross..

I watched Liverpool beat Marseille 2-1.
Unfortunately the live games were Liverpool and Chelsea on 2 channels.
Tonight live matches are Man U and Arsenal.
Juventus v Zenit is delayed game just like Barca game was which means it starts at 0230 after first game finishes (0015 kickoff) :(

English Premier league and its hype on TV here is making me sick as all matches broadcast involve English clubs...Just because most people who watch European football here are fans of English football (main reason is due to all the marketing of that league and most of these "fans" are bandwagon fans, everyone is a Man U/MS/Ferrari fan)

I won't get to watch live Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Real or Juventus games till we get to the knock-out stage. I hope we don't get a all premiership crap semi-finals again this year and the La Liga clubs can do something about it.

I watch enough football across all leagues to know that SWP ain't as brilliant as Chelsea made out. Of course he's mediocre, he doesn't stand out as someone that every team needs. He'd be a much better player if he hadn't spent so much time warming the bench but had actually stayed at Man City the first time round. I say the same about Bale and Walcott at the moment but obviously the lure of the Premiership was too much for them.

I can assure you i am not a deluded Chelsea fan as i have supported them for over thirty years good and bad.

Anyone who thinks that Chelsea don't sign mercenries is deluded IMO :p :

as for a certain Didier on his day he is the best in the world a true world beater he wanted to leave but no one wanted him more than anything else.

Yes he is fantastic, I'm not arguing about the quality of Drogba (nor most the other players), just that half of them are at Chelsea for the money.

As for signing players for extortianate sums those days are few and far between mr abramovich will not be taken for a ride as he may have been before

Maybe we don't see the stupid money signings as much but there are still players that have been bought by Chelsea at far more than their actual value, Sidwell and SWP are 2 that spring to mind who I wouldn't have purchased for so much.

As for Ashley Cole he is playing as one of our best players at the moment and if he continues he will surpas his arsenal days

He's alright as a player but again is just following the money.

Lampard, he has shown loyalty to Chelsea in the past and allthough he got 5 years fair play to him at the moment the best Midfielder in the League with a certain Deco, do you want me to carry on ????

You tell me with a straight face that Lampard is at Chelsea because he is loyal and not because he was offered more cash than he'd have got in Europe. IMO Deco is way better than Frank and I'll give him benefit of the doubt by saying that he wanted to play in the Premiership and wasn't cash hunting

Firstly it's not non-league football that I watch, not anymore :D Jealousy, certainly not. I'm proud that not only is my team not owned by some foreigner who doesn't follow football but actually a fan run club which I own a part of. I just dislike the attitude of Chelsea, nor the idea of buying success and how I can walk down Exeter high street and see more Chelsea shirts than City.

That's a typical Premiership fan response, putting everything down to jealousy and it's that kind of arrogance that makes me hate Chelsea (the same reason I don't like Newcastle who seem to think that they're special). Feel free to laugh at 'mighty Exeter' but I honestly don't want to be taken over by money men. Exeter City came very close to going under due to some dodgy dealings by a couple of corrupt b*****s (now convicted) and survived through sheer bloody mindedness from the fans and the luck of a cup draw against Man Utd which raised some cash. As I said before I am proud of Exeter and couldn't give a toss about other teams. It's not the foreigner's I don't like per se, it's muppets like Hicks and Gillette who don't know what they are buying, a history of passion and pride in the beautiful game.

You may have supported Chelsea since you were suckiling on your mothers tit for all I care but you lambasted Man City for hiring mercenaries which seems a little hypocritical IMO as a fan of the club in the country who is reknowned for paying silly wages (as they all are in my mind, it's stupid money in football). I've not got a problem with the players wanting more money, it makes perfect sense, just don't defend them by saying that they aren't mercenaries because there are few professional footballers these days who wouldn't bite your hand off for an extra 10k a week. If I'm honest John Terry is the first person to spring to mind who I think is actually loyal to the club, likewise Agbonlahor at Villa.

I'm sure you'll be surprised I don't particularly want prima donnas like Berbatov and Drogba at my club, we've got a decent young side who don't think that they're bigger than the world and while they not be as skillful as premiership players I'm largely happy with the squad.

If it's a free world for people to support whoever they want then I'm free to dislike them for it :D But I'm certainly not jealous of any club, because I could easily decide that I'm now a Man U, Real Madrid or LA Galaxy fan if I wanted. Don't expect that to happen though because I'm a Grecian through and through and if you cut me I bleed red ;) :cheese: :p :

It's all relative :) Chelsea fans were probably more narked at last season despite making a decent go of the league and getting to the CL final. Exeter on the other hand manage to win the playoffs of the Conference and have been bouncing off the walls since :bounce:

I'm of the 'support your home team' crowd because so many fans these days actually have no connection with the club they support. Some truly become fans who feel the pain when their team lose, some just enjoy the glory when they win. Personally I don't like it but to each their own and all that :)

Obviously the club is largely after the money but being as the fans run Exeter City it's sort of a different relationship, although that's not to say that a take over wouldn't happen. In terms of turning up every week, it's only the money which really makes a difference.

The club tend to be fairly proud of having a decent turn out each week and a crowd making noise but they wouldn't really miss me if I wasn't there. Obviously teams in the lower leagues notice this more though, if 500 Man U fans don't turn up one week then another 500 will, at City it means a huge drop in revenue and support.

On the other hand there are a lot of fans that work for the club volutarily. Groundstaff and some coaches help out for no money and without those sort of fans the club wouldn't be here today.

P.S In the end though I don't care what the club thinks as long as they don't screw me over. I get my 90 minutes of 'entertainment' each week and that'll do for me. Just because I live every moment of a game in my heart doesn't mean that I expect the players and manager too, for them it's work, for me it's a passion :)

Yup, I don't like it either. What's going to look better in the history books, Russian billionaire came, spent money, bought players, got bored and went elsewhere or club near the edge of non-existence, relegated out of the football league and then saved by the fans, it could almost be a film. I hate Exeter city (you know that :p : ), but whenever I read about the determination of the fans just to keep the place afloat, you have to admit that's something special even miraculous. Some people just don't seem to appreciate that as much, for some it's just about being a glory supporter..

You are kidding me right?? SWP is a very good player, one of the best england has on the right, his performance at the weekend was brilliant, very under-rated in football. Yeh i agree he probably should have stayed at Man City, but when you get to play for such a big club as Chelsea, then its worth the move. It's a dream come true for any footballer. There are bigger clubs than Chelsea, thats true, but they are still a big club nonetheless. He was unfortunate there were better players at the time like Robben and Joe Cole on the wings that kept him out the first squad. The fact SWP is back at city will produce big things for him, especially if all their new found money pays off for him.

As for Theo Walcott, again too early for him to move to Arsenal, but when you get a big chance like that for another top club, you take the opportunity. Took a long time to get into the groove, but we are seeing the hard work pay off this season, Arsene wenger had every right to protect him and make sure he was ready for the big moment, he showed flashes of brilliance when he came off the bench in CL and Premier League in past seasons, and now hes producing it every week. Lets not forget this man became the youngest englishman to score a hat-trick for England against Croatia, plus the fact his cameo at the weekend off the bench was superb, he breezed past the bolton defence to start a move resulting in a third goal for arsenal in the game. If he is not the in form player of the moment right now, then he will be soon, this is his season, quite frankly, this is the season where he shows just how good he is.

I know its not good to hype someone up in case it doesnt work out for him, but this boy is in the form of his life.

As for Gareth Bale ...... i dont like him either :p :

Wolves won again against Palace last Tuesday and 3rd placed Preston at the weekend :D They are in great form, but with Iwelumo and hennessey both off at the weekend, it does leave wolves in a bit of a pickle as to how they will cope without two big players in the team, especially Hennessey who has been a rock in goal for wolves in recent times.

Which is why I think Chelsea was a mistake. He was always going to have a fight to actually get regular football, anyone could have told him that. And he may be England's best option on the right but there aren't really that many truly decent guys out there. Bentley is an overhyped prima donna and Lennon seemingly does nothing apart from have the campest run in English football.

 Definately starting to show that he has something about him and yes you do move to Arsenal if you are told that you are good enough for England. Also Southampton are a selling club anyway and pretty much had no choice. Again though I'd have liked to have seen him play these 2 years in a lesser club (either by joining or on loan) because reserves games and sub appearances don't help in improving proper match experience and fitness. If he had been at Fulham for example then I think that he'd have been an England starter back at the start of the year.

Heard that your LB made a right cock up last week, should've put Georgey Friend on instead ;) :D

Barcelona 3-2 Betis - last night....cracking game too

Eto'o scored 2 quick goals before 25"...Messi and his combination was deadly...then Barca didnt exactly go to sleep and kept creating chances but couldnt add to the score. In 2nd half, Betis scored 2 quick goals and we had 2-2 after 70 mins....Guardiola put on Gudjohnsen and Bojan in place of the 2 defensive midfielders (Keyta & Toure) and they could have scored 3/4 goals.

Gudjohnsen scored a great goal to win it and Bojan missed an easy chance after Messi did some amazing work.

Tough game but such games help the team more as Pep said after the match....Eto'o scored his 100th goal in a Barca shirt

What a week-end of football (and derbies especially!)
Torres with 2 goals in the space of 5 minutes to down Everton.

Barcelona played a very volatile game and won 2-1 vs Espanyol...Good to see Henry get a start and score an important goal (Barca 0-1 down and Henry equalised in 82' and Messi scored a penalty in injury time) Can't believe I'm hoping for Henry to do well...but fact is if Etoo gets injured Barca are screwed unless Henry finds some form...Bojan misses far too many!

Valencia still lead the Liga though followed by Villarreal...2 goals by David Villa yet again!!!!

Yeh a bit of an eyecatcher that Beckham deal, be good to see whether hes good enough to play top football as he used to be able to, hes already done la liga and the premiership, its now time for the 3rd biggest league in the world.

Champions league was incredible last night, i watched the highlights afterwards, sensational! Man Utd for all their dominance were extremely lucky considering the terrible refereeing of the match, both of berbatovs goals were offside, allbeit marginal, but even so, He then got hailed as a superstar. Quite frankly, i think hes way too overpaid, and hes so selfish, and all the goals he has scored so far have been from a yard out. even i could score them. Hardly world class.

Del Piero however.... ;) He's a diffferent kettle of fish, that goal was outstanding last night, it got me out my seat.

Wolves Update: They have been on the slide lately :( A couple of losses were revived by a win over coventry (very fortunately) which put us back top of the table. But last night, a 5-2 loss to Norwich put us back in second place, and lacking a bit of confidence at the moment, need to get out of the slump we are in.

In second place and you are talking about a slump? Man some people are just pampered with their football :D Exeter are lying 5th at the moment and I'm stoked, even the outside possibility of being top at 16:50 on Saturday  Unlikely though but I am impressed with how the team's doing, keep surprising people at the moment at lots of fans seem to be saying that their teams 'had a bad day'. I just wonder how many teams are going to have a bad day befpre they realise that they were just outplayed by the new boys.

As for DB to AC. Didn't see it coming but you have to appreciate Milan's approach to employing senior citizens. Fat Ronaldo, goal drought Shevchenko and now the fashion statement? Not exactly heavy hitters in my book.

That's disguisting, it happens in Serie A too and it's because in these countries there's not the same sporting-culture you see in PL. It also annoys me ( and the referee should punish that) when players are asking referee to give a card to those who have committed a foul

Happening far too much over here now, even in the lower leagues which have traditionally been fairly tough with tackling. I think that the general opinion is that it's something that has arrived from Europe and in particular Italy.

I hate any sort of dive or over reaction. The Cristiano Ronaldo reaction to what was a nasty knock on Sunday was disgraceful and if I had been in charge of the game he'd have got the free kick but also a yellow card for being such a little b**** :D

 that kinds of acts should be punished with retroactive red cards

Stop dreaming, Argentina still have a great Squad, starting from Messi so it won't be easy even with Maradona as coach  ;)

Real were really lucky to get a 4-3 win against Málaga :s
3 penalties in the game and Real M got 2 of those.....Higuain scored all 4 goals.

Better news in the late game Barcelona stuffed Valladolid 6-0.

Eto'o is on fire...4 goals in the first half..he has now 13 from 10 La Liga games :champion: I don't want to get my hopes too up so early but the Pep revolution seems to be working till now. Although Guardiola must be feeling foolish that he had decided to sell the guy in the summer :s

I have never been so happy to see Henry scoring a goal! He played pretty well and made 2 goals for Samuel but missed a couple of easy chances. Finally got an easy chance which he buried. :)

Hahaha....Schuster now has to win the next Liga game or will be fired!

Fenomenal my ar$e.....they have been leaking goals every match...December will be fun in Liga with Barca and Madrid playing each other & Valencia, Villarreal and Sevilla too. Villareal also got dumped out of the Copa del Rey by a Segunda team and Barca had to toil for a 1-0 win against Benidorm (2-0 agg).

Surprised that Bernd Schuster is still around...0-1 to Valladolid on Saturday
 (they were hammered 6-0 last week by Barca! see post 987)

This amazing "Pep revolution" continues as Barcelona won 2-0 Recreativo Huelva..Surprisingly Valencia lost 2-3 to Gijon and Villareal drew so Barca are well and truly on top of the Liga now.

December will make or break the title charge with games against all top teams.

Finally the run of wins ended for Barca....1-1 draw vs Getafe
They dominated the game (Keita scored) and Bojan (why did he start??) was subbed by Henry and Gudjohnsen added some creativity in the end but they could not score the winner.
Schuster continues as Madrid won their game as well (just about) and Villarreal lost to Valladolid
