Why are insects called insects? They usually live outdoors, so why aren't they called outsects?

Is it me or does anyone else think we get more exotic insects in this country now? Bloody global warming I think!

Insect is an abreviation of the Latin term "insectiatum" which means "in sections" and refers to the segmented body of an insect.

perhaps famine in some hot countries drives them north too
