[WRC] 80. Rally Poland 2024

Over 300 kilometers on nineteen special stages are waiting for the competitors during the ORLEN 80th Rally Poland. As many as 70 fan zones will be located along the spectacular gravel tests of the seventh round of the FIA World Rally Championship. The Polish classic, which is marked this year by its record-breaking eightieth edition, will be held on June 27-30. The rally will be based in the picturesque town Mikołajki for the nineteenth time in a row.

I know the promotors and organisers don’t want them there, but didn’t think anyone on here with enthusiasm for our great sport would stoop so low. What a terrible attitude to anyone who is trying to at least have a go at an event on the world stage.

A rally with just a few Rally1 cars would be absolutely pathetic to me, but why do you think that WRC2 cars should be allowed? Everyone could leave earlier if they weren’t there?

From my experience, lower classes usually provide more adventures and more exciting adventures. I think it is a shame that FIA don't want country championship during WRC rally. Last years Estonia was in "small format" as well AFAIR.

I think so. Unless they are very strict and put people on every little forest road. I guess it would be possible to buy the ticket on the day of the event if needed, or does it have to be preordered to get a physical pass?

Watching these test videos… the rally should’ve been next week, 4 weeks is too long! Yes I’m aware it’s kind of part of their summer break but…if they want to get 14 events in next year, they need to have a good look at the calendar.

I've been to WRC Poland every year it was run, but my memory is not too good, but I believe you are more or less "forced" to park in huge organised areas (where you also show you have a ticket), which could still be like 500 meters from the stage itself and then it is up to you if you stay in the spectator zone or walk further into the stage. I remember some smaller roads being guarded by police and not allowing access. Maybe not all of them though.

Luckily doesn’t so sound serious but..

The accident occurred on a hill on a section of a gravel road. The rally car was driven by French driver Sébastien Ogier, next to him he had a pilot. A woman and a passenger were driving a passenger.

For now, it is not known why the cars collided. Two helicopters of the air ambulance arrived on the scene - they took the driver of the rally car and the woman who was driving the passenger car. The other two people were taken to the hospital by ambulance. All of them are suspected of spinal and chest injuries.

Depends how much they had already done, P1 crews start earlier than others. As I said above if they are good to go then they could keep going until recce closes, I’m sure they’d be allowed. Then piece together the bits they missed, they might have been on 2nd run (faster) when the accident happened.

I just can’t really see it, especially if there are two others hurt (potentially badly) and its bound to affect you.

I mean by looking at the damaged cars and where they are, looks like Ogier was cutting/on inside of a left hander, so my initial guess is that he was at fault. So obviously depending on the injuries sustained in the other car, there could be police investigations continuing? Maybe Toyota won’t want any publicity about it by him continuing in the event?

I'm hearing that Seb want to go. They are waiting for a green light from FIA (I've heard that there is some procedure in the event of an accident on recce). However, I don't know if it's true. My friend who is in Mikolajki told me this. Let's hope they are ok and they will start :)

Serious injuries are ruled out and Vincent has already left the hospital, while Ogier will remain under observation overnight. A replacement is not ruled out.

Testing and also recce is not so important in these days (on this level). Everybody is learning the stages from onboards to this memory. I am sure Kalle started to watch videos immediatelly...

He also has slight advantage over others that he will get the recce videos recorded by Evans etc so I can’t see it being an issue.

It will be a good and interesting exercise but I don't hope it brings sales, there's no need to encourage super-expensive cars in national series where Rally2 is already high performance.

M-Sport is a business and has to make money to survive. You have had to go to them for certain parts for decades, even Sadev won’t sell you parts for a dog box for a Fiesta ST, you have to go through M-Sport. For the amount they have to spend in R&D then I don’t have an issue with it. Just wish it wasn’t say a 14 week for a gearbox part…

On this type of stages it is no surprise. Martins was always fast on fast gravel stages.

I am surprised that some drivers are doing more than three runs on shakedown. Namely Korhonen did 5 runs. When regulations says: P2 and P3 drivers shall complete a minimum of one passage and they are permitted a maximum of 3 passages in total of the Shakedown.

I didn't say it was important. Although the SD is televised, the drivers interviewed and their times reported everywhere.

Sometimes it's useful if a driver hasn't had much practice or testing, plus it can be an indicator of how comfortable a driver is with his car.

Okay, my only expierence was in 2014 when all access road were closed 3 km before. On our liasion we accidentally hit the our 2014 spot where Kubica rolled (it’s tarmac section now). Nice memories.
