View Full Version : Where is the usual thread about Eurovision?

Sorry guys but I can't believe that none of you watched the semi final last night. The funny thing is that all the 10 participants who managed to go to final are from the East. I can already see a big scandal on the horizon....

Dunno what you're talking about :p :

That Scooch tune is awful, but it is camp enough to win Eurovision. One of the blokes is from South Shields. I reckon it's Seat Freak.

Who got to the final then? I didn't watch it...

gadjo_dilo
11th May 2007, 11:15
Serbia, FYR Macedonia, Slovenia , Moldova, Georgia, Belarus , Latvia , Turkey ,Hungary and Bulgaria.

The only one that I like is the serbian song. And I also liked Malta.

That Scooch tune is awful

I actually got asked for that by a 50+ woman at a black tie ball on Sunday. The look of shock on her face when I told her I didn't have it was a picture :D

Most of the songs are ... khm, boring as always. :p :

Estonia didn't get into the finals, but I didn't expect it anyway. Our song (as it has been the case in the last years) was IMO not differentiable from others, so the result is logical. And actually I liked more songs that got 2nd and 3rd places in our National finals, so I didn't have reason to support our country at Eurovision. I'm supporting that country, whose song I like, which means that at the moment I'm supporting no-one. :p : (maybe among those, who didn't compete in the semifinal, there is someone really likeable, hard to say now) The last Estonian Eurovision song that I liked, was "Tii" (in 2004) - that was unconventional, although it didn't help us out either. :p :

And talking about the problems of geopolitics is not the answer as both Latvia and Lithuania are in the finals again!

I'm predicting that Scooch won't even make the top ten. Awful rubbish. As anyone who reads my blog (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=124721357&blogID=243434061&MyToken=59fea433-4fd7-4373-8ca4-fc12459753b2) will know.... :erm: :p

Some countries get straight to the finals because they are the the biggest funders of the European Broadcasting Union. The UK is one of those countries. The ones who have to qualify aren't necessarily crap, they can simply be too small or too poor.

Well I didn't necessarily mean the countries are crap... what I meant was the songs that get through are totally dire, so ones that fail through qualifying must be truly truly shocking.

Dave B
11th May 2007, 18:37
The semi was tucked away on BBC Three last night. Interesting viewing, in many respects. The acts which didn't make it weren't necessarily crap, that's true. But....

Although GB really can't talk with our shower of s***

Hey ho, a good half of the voting is political anyway.

One of the blokes is from South Shields. I reckon it's Seat Freak.

Also because the song is a load of mindless drivel which goes on and on, then you actually realise it has no point to it whatsoever?

I like Eurovision, as do many people, just for Terry Wogan. Not much else. :p :

It's so Godawful it's unmissable.
Now I was confined to barracks last night as all the girls went on the lash leaving yours truly looking after a 2 year old baby :(
Dirty nappies? Pah! I laugh in the face of 'em.
Anyway shortly after the action started I was joined by my son-in-law and fellow ale house widower the aptly named Steve "Big Foot" who despite being an absolute man mountain is one of the kindest and gentlest fellas on God's green earth but unfortunately he's also an incorrigible homophobe with a deep suspicion of anything he perceives as being "a bit gay"
I therefore watched with some amusement as camp act after camp act minced out onto the stage and Steve's mouth opened wider and wider until I thought his face was gonna fall in half.
It finally came to a head when the French came on with a singer who would make Danny La Rue look like Arnie Schwarzenegger with steroid rage. This prompted my beer buddy to turn to me with what looked like tears in his eyes and a look of absolute, abject misery on his face and utter the immortal line "There's no effing need for it is there mate?"

Gotta love the voting in the Eastern European Song Contest...

 The typical excuse of the westerners who once again faced the yearly humiliation of their poor entries.
Anyway, I was again right about the winner ( see the first page of the topic ) and I'm glad that people remembered this contest is about music. It's refreshing that an * Ugly Betty " with no dancers and half naked girls but with the courage to sing in a language that most of us couldn't understand has won against the visual effect of those galactic transsexuals dressed in tinfoil who recalled a young version of Elton John, cos the kind of the " ein, zwei, polizei " song was smoked long time ago.
Before coming with complaints about voting let's leave hypocrisy and see to whom went the votes of the western countries. Of course there's the annoying rule that former yugoslavian countries or former soviet ones vote for each other but do the westerners vote only for good music? And if they come with good acts then who stop them to vote each other? As most of them voted for Turkey I shall draw the conclusion that they like the disgusting navel shaking genre. Now some of you will say there are many turkish and muslim emigrants in the west but then how come that last year it didn't work? ( Turkey has come from semi final so last year it wasn't in top 10 ).

UK didn't get points, their song and dancing remembered me of " Brotherhood of men ", but for God's sake they won in the 70's. Belgim came with a 70's anthem as well as their song, looks, clothes and voices had an * Earth Wind and Fire " trademark. France also remembered of Pastique Bertrand.

And just for fun here's the way the countries voted:
http://www.esctoday.com/annual/crosstable.php?id=435

Interesting to see that Serbia, Ukraine and Russia got points from everywhere not only from neighbourhood

Although we are also a balkanic country our neighbours disliked us: Serbia 0 ( booo! ), Bulgaria 2 ( probably from our weekend tourists at Golden Sands ), Ukraine 2 ( nice one, they usually give us nothing ). But nice to see that Hungary who traditionally hate our nation gave us 8 points, probably from some guys who work there.

Not an excuse at all. Our song was abysmal and we deserved everything we got. Or didn't get...

But you must admit that all the voting was a farce: not just the Balkan countries but the way, for example, the UK and Ireland stuck together and the predictability of our high score from Malta.

But you must admit that all the voting was a farce: not just the Balkan countries but the way, for example, the UK and Ireland stuck together and the predictability of our high score from Malta.

I admit that every country may "steal" about 60 points from the neighbourhood or from different reasons but you can't win if the song doesn't get about 200 points. It means that it should get points from almost every country. I gave you a link, just go there and see that the countries in top 5 ( serbia, ukraine, russia, turkey, bulgaria ) got points from most of the other countries. Every country has its own chance if the song has a little " something " . Last year we were no.4, two years ago we were no.3 without the support of the neighbours ( in 2005 even Moldova betrayed us and gave only 7 points ) but with 2 excellent songs.
Look at the final results, you need at least 110 points to be in top 10. Even if the balkans and ex-soviets will vote for each other, with a good song you may take 2-3-4-5 points from many of the 42 countries involved. But for years I couldn't see a UK, France, Spain, Germany, Belgium,Switzerland, etc. singer in top 10.
I think a western artist may easily win if they put in their act half of the effort the easterners do. So instead of complaining why don't present some decent artists? At this point I must also underline the way this contest is perceived. In western Europe I think it's underrated, a contest for losers. For the artists in eastern Europe it's the chance of their life to be seen and maybe to get a record deal abroad. For instance, the guy who represented us last year didn't win, he was only no.4, but he made a fortune cos his song became a hit in a few countries, he signed a lot of contracts. etc.

It turns out this was in protest at the rigged voting.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/6657207.stm

I've seen suggestions that the UK encourage other countries such as Jersey and Guernsey to join, in the hope this would increase our block vote chances, but I think two wrongs don't make a right. I don't think there should be any block voting.

The easiest way to calm everything down is to scrap the telephone voting, which has got way out of hand.

Here's another example of why it doesn't work. Sweden gave Finland the maximum 12 points.

Now it just so happens that a lot of Finns live in Sweden, so voted in effect for their own country which you're not supposed to be able to do!

Perhaps we should exclude votes to country A from countries B, C... that have sizeable minorities of the country A
:p :

Sorry - something I've been wanting to say for ages, havent found time tho

"I've learnt that Eurovision can be won by a short, tubby, bowl-cut Serbian Lesbian with a moustache."

Feel lot better now.

:D
Not directed at you DD but..... DUH! to the story :mark:

Eurovision is obviously rigged in a sense but it's merely for entertainment purposes so who gives a rats!

Wasn't the "expert judges" voting scrapped partly because they found out that lot of countries fixed their votes with other countries beforehand

No, it's because they realised they could make a lot of money out of 8 million people (across Europe) calling premium rate numbers to vote.

I don' think Eurovision would survive nowadays without telephone voting in the "power to the people" era of entertainement. anyway looking at at some results from previous years, political voting existed much before telephone voting was even an idea!

actually who cares? the last I thing I care about is the quality of the song, I just cheers for the hottest chick or the funniest performance, wanted Russia to win but had to settle with Jack Osbourne winning :p :

I think the ultimate solution is an european song contest judged by an impartial(?) noneuropean jury. The eastern countries wouldn't stand any chance.
