The only one that I like is the serbian song. And I also liked Malta.

Estonia didn't get into the finals, but I didn't expect it anyway. Our song (as it has been the case in the last years) was IMO not differentiable from others, so the result is logical. And actually I liked more songs that got 2nd and 3rd places in our National finals, so I didn't have reason to support our country at Eurovision. I'm supporting that country, whose song I like, which means that at the moment I'm supporting no-one. :p : (maybe among those, who didn't compete in the semifinal, there is someone really likeable, hard to say now) The last Estonian Eurovision song that I liked, was "Tii" (in 2004) - that was unconventional, although it didn't help us out either. :p :

And talking about the problems of geopolitics is not the answer as both Latvia and Lithuania are in the finals again!

Some countries get straight to the finals because they are the the biggest funders of the European Broadcasting Union. The UK is one of those countries. The ones who have to qualify aren't necessarily crap, they can simply be too small or too poor.

I have to say though, the show was even more fixed than last year, me and my girlfriend guessed all the countries who got 12 points from the countries who voted apart from two, UK being one of them :p : i know turkey had british dancers in it, but even i didnt see that coming.

I have to admit, I spent the weekend back with the parents in Wales and, as pennance for making me do post-rewiring DIY activities, I forced them both to sit there and watch Eurovision last night!

By the time the Ukraine entry arrived (the one we were cheering on by the end of the 2 hours of dire atrocities towards music!) we were more than half-cut... well, you had to be to withstand some of the entries!!

Although, I'm still quite liking the Finish entry! :D Again, very Evanescence like!!

And as for Terry... well done yet again Sir!! How the heck he hasn't been kicked off the show I'll never know. Although, saying that, how many of us actually watch the whole debarcle just for Terry's comments eh?!

Anyway, I was again right about the winner ( see the first page of the topic ) and I'm glad that people remembered this contest is about music. It's refreshing that an * Ugly Betty " with no dancers and half naked girls but with the courage to sing in a language that most of us couldn't understand has won against the visual effect of those galactic transsexuals dressed in tinfoil who recalled a young version of Elton John, cos the kind of the " ein, zwei, polizei " song was smoked long time ago.
Before coming with complaints about voting let's leave hypocrisy and see to whom went the votes of the western countries. Of course there's the annoying rule that former yugoslavian countries or former soviet ones vote for each other but do the westerners vote only for good music? And if they come with good acts then who stop them to vote each other? As most of them voted for Turkey I shall draw the conclusion that they like the disgusting navel shaking genre. Now some of you will say there are many turkish and muslim emigrants in the west but then how come that last year it didn't work? ( Turkey has come from semi final so last year it wasn't in top 10 ).

UK didn't get points, their song and dancing remembered me of " Brotherhood of men ", but for God's sake they won in the 70's. Belgim came with a 70's anthem as well as their song, looks, clothes and voices had an * Earth Wind and Fire " trademark. France also remembered of Pastique Bertrand.

Although we are also a balkanic country our neighbours disliked us: Serbia 0 ( booo! ), Bulgaria 2 ( probably from our weekend tourists at Golden Sands ), Ukraine 2 ( nice one, they usually give us nothing ). But nice to see that Hungary who traditionally hate our nation gave us 8 points, probably from some guys who work there.

I admit that every country may "steal" about 60 points from the neighbourhood or from different reasons but you can't win if the song doesn't get about 200 points. It means that it should get points from almost every country. I gave you a link, just go there and see that the countries in top 5 ( serbia, ukraine, russia, turkey, bulgaria ) got points from most of the other countries. Every country has its own chance if the song has a little " something " . Last year we were no.4, two years ago we were no.3 without the support of the neighbours ( in 2005 even Moldova betrayed us and gave only 7 points ) but with 2 excellent songs.
Look at the final results, you need at least 110 points to be in top 10. Even if the balkans and ex-soviets will vote for each other, with a good song you may take 2-3-4-5 points from many of the 42 countries involved. But for years I couldn't see a UK, France, Spain, Germany, Belgium,Switzerland, etc. singer in top 10.
I think a western artist may easily win if they put in their act half of the effort the easterners do. So instead of complaining why don't present some decent artists? At this point I must also underline the way this contest is perceived. In western Europe I think it's underrated, a contest for losers. For the artists in eastern Europe it's the chance of their life to be seen and maybe to get a record deal abroad. For instance, the guy who represented us last year didn't win, he was only no.4, but he made a fortune cos his song became a hit in a few countries, he signed a lot of contracts. etc.

I think it's a shame the competition is like this. But that's the way it is. If I was a Bosnian I certainly wouldn't be voting for Serbia after Serbia invaded my country and laid waste to it but perhaps that's just me.
