Try to prepare that Tänak might not be able to fight for the win in Rallye Monte Carlo. Surely already in Rally Sweden...

I'm very curious to see how Tanak will drive with Hyundai on tarmac, although Monte is not quite representative of an actual tarmac rally. A lot of drivers had problems with the i20 except Neuville.

Ogier will surely win. I think Monte Carlo won't show us anything about Ott's relationship with the Hyundai. Sweden will, though.

Anybody know when they wil release the maps for the 2020 edition?
What are the must do's for a monte virgin?
(Turini wont be possible, whe fly back on Sunday already).
Whe stay in Saint-Léger-les-Mélèzes, so any good places around there would be awsome)

Usually they keep it secret until christmas time. But look up my previous post about the route, most of the stages can be figured out already.

In 2014 the official stores were on the main road, but in 2016 they were not, so I asked

Just over a month is missing at the Rallye Monte-Carlo, the traditional opening round of the WRC World Championship.

Day after day, the first programs of drivers and teams that will participate in the race come out.

Well one of these concerns our Umberto Scandola, in fact according to what Fabrizio Cravero reports on the website wikirace.it it would seem that the Hyundai Rally Team Italia team has entered the Veronese at WRC3 with the Hyundai I20 R5.

The program should start from the legendary Monte Carlo and then continue in another five or six races that have not yet been revealed.

For the road closing time if you go to https://acm.mc/en/edition/rallye-monte-carlo-edition-2020/infos-spectateurs/cartes-interactives/
Open whatever stage you want the info for and zoom into the TC at the start off the stage and click it the road closing time is there , for stage 1 it is 18:38 until 22:38 , but don't forget if there is a lot of spectator movement on a stage the Police will close the stage earlier if they see fit .
Hope this helps

Official times are not kept. Stages can be closed much earlier, according to what police thinks. Also, access roads are sometimes closed even one or two hours before, and you have to walk two, three or even eight kilometers to reach the stage.

As Mirek said. I visit the rally by camper every year last 12 years. And this year I will go to Shakedown, SS3 and SS9. There is a new stage every year for me as they change the stages every year, or at least part of them, especially friday´s stages. But it makes Monte special.

For the experts,

Would a timing like this be possible?

On thursday evening, walking to the hairpins after 2km in stage, wil parking in the village of Bayons be possible?

For Friday we were thinking of doing stage SS5 in Notre dames de Laus
Than SS6 (service is in between) entering from Tallard
Than moving on to SS8 at Jarjayes
Possible service after that.

On saturday, stage SS9 saint leger, hairpins after town of Ancelle, walking from that town.
Than second pas of Saint Leger, at the start, as we are staying in that village during the rally.

If I'm not mistaken that area was closed for public in 2018. In 2017 it was possible to park in Bayons and to walk to the spot but there were people standing from 13-14:00 and the start of the stage was at around the same time as this year.
Saturday - In 2017 we were standing at the first hairpin after Ancelle, it was very fast and easy to access this spot from the resort, we have parked near the ski lift. There were some snow and ice even on the second pass and it was a sunny and relatively warm day.

This was exactly my plan too. Staying in Ancelle. But I saw on the official map that these hairpins are in a 'no public' zone. I wondered how much that would be enforced?

For ss2 wil wil take the gamble, getting there in time so we have other options stil

tommeke_B
12th January 2020, 15:30
When you drive towards the start of SS2, in Bayons you can go left and leave the main road, then you have a small road you can follow (it runs +- parallel with the main road), and it also leads to the start. Last time we used it in 2017 we got very close to the start. Arrived too late to be allowed to walk on the stage however, we went there after the stage was stopped following Paddon's accident, not knowing yet what exactly happened.

How long before did you arrive when you where not allowed to walk there?

tommeke_B
12th January 2020, 17:37
I'm not sure anymore, I think approximately 40 minutes before the stage started, which is quite late nowadays, in WRC... If you arrive more than 1,5 hours in advance I wouldn't expect any problems.

Yes, also long view of the cars on the fields.

The passings of villages at the beginning of the stage are super narrow and tricky. There should be more of those at the end of the stage.

Interesting. You think they'll be flat through there, or having to lift, given the speed they will be doing and the imminent left coming up?

Interesting. You think they'll be flat through there, or having to lift, given the speed they will be doing and the imminent left coming up?

If it's dry... With the speed they'll be arriving definitely not flat out on the right hander. The wide-angle of the onboard camera makes the road look a bit wider and straigher than it actually is. The left hander after it is nothing to worry about, as the speed will be broken by this first corner and that corner is faster.

Very interesting section. Also the left hander after 9min05 caught my eye, tricky one, and no margin.

But of course I'm just an amateur who makes his own idea from the onboard footage, I could be totally wrong. :)

Current forecast giving rain for Monte Friday. I know it's not exactly snowfall, but still changing conditions, and all kind of rain or snowfall was absent from last year's Monte.

After I saw Toyota preview saying Evans had good "speed" in Monte in the past I went back to check his history there.

It actually is one of his worst rallies with two 6th places as best result. So there certainly is room for improvement.

That's why I looked it up. Normally a press release would talk about "good results" or "succes" in the past. When they talk about speed it's immediatelly obvious that results weren't good.

Can't wait to see how Evans does. So pleased he's finally got his big break as he deserves it.

Just hope he can handle the pressure. In reality Toyota need him to get to the level of the top 3 drivers if they are to have any chance of the manufacturers title. So hope if Evans increases his speed that mistakes don't start to creep in as a result.

It means he's set some fast times there. He is very quick on the tarmac but needs to cut out the mistakes.

Isn’t he just! Used to make slippers for the local church in his spare time, if I remember.
Met him on the 2017 rally GB when he was stuck because of some bad parking (not mine) but I needed to move my van so he could get out and there was no way it would turn in the space available... no problem for Gyndaff.. he summoned some help and they lifted the back end of the van around and we were all away.
Gave me a thanks and a solid nod and went back to meet Elfyn in service.
Top man!

A doting mother decided that she had to have the room to film her son crossing the Col during the last day of the event. She didn’t even stay the night. Arriving by helicopter, she made her way to the best balcony in town, had her man film her son as he blasted by, paid the patron €3000 and then left. Now I’ve heard about rooms you can rent for the hour, but this has to be some kind of record.

- I look forward very much to the future. I immediately saw that we were working well with Esapeka. We had pretty much the same adjustments in the tests and it looks like we want to take the car in the same direction, Suninen explains.

Below is a preview of the Monte Carlo World Rally, where Sebastien Loeb talks about the challenges of the classic race. The story continues after the video.

Pre-Rally Tests Suninen drove completely on dry asphalt, which is a small minus overall. The Monte Carlo Rally is sure to come with ice, if not snow.

- I really did test on dry asphalt and at least on the surface the feeling was good. For more difficult conditions on ice and snow, I have to rely on my experience. This is now the fourth time in Montana, so I'm already feeling a bit better, Suninen apricots.

- This rally is always a lottery. However, I have an experienced group of front cars that I fully trust. So anything is possible.

People would start complaining "why are they showing the empty stage" when cars are either returning to the start, changing their tyres, setup or even going back to the service.

Only last year the shakedown running order was set to have a schedule for the first run. After that it's free. It would most likely be a waste of resources to stream more of the shakedown.

so the rally starts today

what are everyones expectations?

For me Ogier is the favourite like always at Monte, no matter what the car is. As basically he is local, he knows how to read the conditions and weather etc. He showed with the Fiesta and C3 that even with little testing time he is still unbeatable.

Neuville for second i think or maybe also for the win. Last year he narrowly missed out and its all familiar for him regarding car and team wise, he should feel the most comfortable and confident.

Tänak for third. He has a good record here the last 3 years, two 3rd places and one 2nd place, it isn't his strongest rally i would say. The question is how fast he has adapted to the car. Same for Ogier thou

dunno about the rest, Evans for 4th i think or maybe Loeb? Maybe Lappi will surprise? i have no idea, so many unknown's this year, we even can't take for granted that Ogier, Neuville and Tänak will be in TOP3.

Anyway, exciting season ahead with so many changes!

Well, you just read through my top six prediction...I think it's a battle between Ogier and Neuville. Ogier has a good car but he has to adapt to it, but we've seen in the past he can do that quick, and Toyota has been easy to adapt (Tänak, Meeke). Meanwhile, I would still give some time for Tänak to settle in with the more difficult Hyundai. And the shakedown seems to hint that Loeb hasn't gotten any faster with the Hyundai.

AnttiL

@ Hyundai exhaust
Think it's pretty weird. Why do all 6+ days of testing with new exhaust and then use old? If they knew they wouldn't use it on Monte they should have run some days with old one?
Then it's the fact that they use new diffuser in combination with old exhaust which is a combination that wasn't on any test at all as far as I know.

--------------------------

Well, you just read through my top six prediction...I think it's a battle between Ogier and Neuville. Ogier has a good car but he has to adapt to it, but we've seen in the past he can do that quick, and Toyota has been easy to adapt (Tänak, Meeke). If it's mostly dry and easy tire choices I think Evans can get 4th or maybe even 3rd if Tanak struggles more. If there are lots of tricky tire choices Loeb should be 4th instead, on the other than if it's very dry it's possible Loeb ends behind the two Fords around 6-7th place.

Pretty sad to see Loeb after 1 year and 6 tarmac rallies in the car, with 3 extra testing rallies included and he is still basically slowest WRC (apart from Katsuta). Seems that the car as it is just can't be adapted to some drivers on dry tarmac without some big changes... and those won't come as long as at least 2 drivers can drive it fast.

Sorry. But no.
People want to see SD are not complaining. They know.

Well, only two years ago we didn't see anything of the shakedown. Now we get a great coverage of the first run, and people are still complaining...

If they manage to show SD, why not do it more properly while being there with all resourses?

I wouldn´t mind waiting. Not spectators at sight either.

Have you been on a shakedown yourself? Those who had know what to expect.

It's not free to keep the transmitter aeroplane in the air or all the other machinery working, or someone operating the equipment, people speaking and interviewing the drivers.

Yes. It was a lot of waiting, and not being able to expect who comes and when.

Forecasts giving dry and small plus temperatures for tonight. In recce pics SS1 was fairly dry and SS2 quite snowy. There should be some rain early Friday morning, possibly still during the first stages with temperatures on both sides of zero.

SS2 tonight will be the really interesting one...

Loeb:
Stage two was really tricky in the recce. I don’t know how [much] it will be melting. There will be some ice parts, maybe tyre choice will be the first issue.
