Following the publishing the FIA European Rally Championship calendar for 2020, Jean-Baptiste Ley, the ERC Co-ordinator, highlights some of the key points.

Q: The ERC will again be decided over eight rounds in 2020. But why not add more events, especially when Corsica and Catalunya have dropped out of the world championship schedule?

A: “We consult our drivers and teams every season and the underlying wish is to respect budgetary and time concerns. Eight remains the preferred number of rallies and we are very happy with the events we work with. There was no reason to change a winning formula.”

Q: What does the calendar offer drivers, particularly those who are stepping up from national to international level?

A: “First and foremost we offer eight well organised events all with their own unique appeal and challenge. There is an equal split of asphalt and gravel rallies, which is perfect for building experience of different surfaces. By scheduling the events from March to November, costs can be spread throughout the year.”

Q: Will teams benefit from travel support to attend the island rallies next season?

A: “Arrangements are being made with the organisers of the Azores Rallye, Rally Islas Canarias and the Cyprus Rally to provide logistical support once again. More details will be announced in due course.”

Q: There will again be a focus on young talent through the two ERC Junior championships. What’s the plan for 2020?

A: “ERC1 Junior will continue to cater for young stars in R5 cars with ERC3 Junior for rising talents in R2 machinery on Pirelli tyres. Soon we’ll announce details of the prize packages on offer in 2020.”

Q: Not wishing to single out one event but Barum Czech Rally Zlín turns 50 in 2020. What do you think of this achievement?

A: “The ERC has enjoyed a long and very successful relationship with the organisers of Barum Czech Rally Zlín. The month of August is always eagerly anticipated and every year we look forward to and enjoy a great welcome and plenty of on-stage action. In addition to being well managed, the event is extremely popular among our registered drivers and teams, who take part in great number each season. We extend our congratulations to the Barum Czech Rally Zlín organising team for reaching this impressive milestone.”

Yes, so it's good to welcome somebody from north/western Europe in the championship. Good luck to Callum Devine:

I heard Chris Ingram thanking a John Coyne for his support.

He is a former Irish rally driver from the 1980's and the man behind Irish Motorsport's funding of young driver's.

I think he must've played a big part in filling his funding gap.

Checking him out he's a pretty wealthy retired CEO of a tech company.

Great to see, although would be nice if they covered him more in their local sports news prior to that to raise his profile?

He made a good point; Colin McRae, maybe even Richard Burns were household names in the UK. I could stop 100 people in the street and wouldn’t be surprised if nobody had heard of Kris Meeke or Elfyn Evans. Despite ‘All Live’ and rallies packaged for media coverage the profile in this country has only fallen.

He has been on Granada & NW Tonight a couple of times over the years, like when Rally GB was using a 'local' stage at Cholmondley. But there hasnt been any coverage of him in ERC since winning the U27 Championship in 2017.

Although with the size of football, rugby and other sports in the area, I suppose that's not really surprising.

Not sure if this means a permanent departure for Chris Ingram however he's mentioned here as being part of the Extreme E off road series.

I saw Billy Monger in the headline but didnt read the article. Good that you did and spotted that mention of Ingram.

I think Ingram knows Billy so maybe that's how he got connected.

Extreme-E say, 'an amazing roster of driver's have registered their interest to race with us'. So nothing is confirmed at all yet.

Well no, but Chris is British which many in NI find pretty important to their identity.

There is also be the fact that NI are trying to be the new location for Rally GB and running a round of ERC here could be a good chance to show they are ready for it.

Fantastic news for ERC. i'm sure Breen would rather be driving WRC but on the other hand I am also sure he will be happy to be driving than not at all.

I'm sure he will have progressed as a driver since leaving ERC so if he is not competing for wins then it will be fair to say it's down to the tyres - so he will be an excellent benchmark for MRF.

Hopefully Luky gets a full season and then this year he will have some strong competition..

Didn't work out bad for either of their careers in the long run. Allowed them to get wins that they likely wouldn't have been able to without the 'difference' and they weren't expected to do well on tarmac.

Good news to see Breen and Hyundai step up to ERC; I would say it's deserving of a proper comeback but the competition between Eurosport and WRC2/3 for who can do a worse job of promoting their competition is intense.

Fast Eddie WRC
5th February 2020, 15:49
I doubt very much if MRF's will be better than the big boys on any surface. More than likely they'll act as a leveller and give the others a chance to match or beat Breen.

If Lukyanuk competes (on Pirellis or Michelin) and has a reliable car, he will still be my favourite to win.

Its going to be interesting to see the 2 Irish guys in Hyundai's go up against each other! On the one hand Craig is the established star who has had a big hand in developing the revised i20 and although he may be on unproven rubber his experience should shine through. Also he has unfinished business in the ERC after the Pug let him down too many times. In the other corner is Callum Devine who is kind of Hyundai's chosen young up and coming driver although as we have seen from WRC2/3 how much HMSG are actually contributing to his programme is up for discussion.

It's a bit strange really Hyundai giving Devine the chance in ERC and now throwing in Breen against him.

This web of Gran Canaria talks widely about rumours of next FIA ERC 2.020

Perhaps some names will not finally participate in this championship, in my opinion is a interesting list...

This article was written last January, 20

When there are just over two months left before the FIA ERC 2020 starts with the Azores Rallye (March 26-28), the teams are tying budgets and closing the projects for the current year, pre-season months where the boiling of the European Rally Championship is maximum.

With the current European Rally Champion, Chris Ingram, and the best ERC 1 Junior in 2019, Filip Mares, both heading for WRC 3, it might seem that the FIA ERC has been orphaned by young drivers who could fight for the title absolute. But at the moment there is relief in the figure of the Irishman Callum Devine, who along with Brian Hoy, will play the entire championship on a Hyundai i20 R5 with the aim of winning the ERC 1 Junior.
Also disputing the complete calendar, but this time with the aim of fighting for the absolute title, the Norwegian Eyvind Brynildsen will be at the helm of a Fabia R5 Evo of the Toksport team with Ilka Minor, providing that quality bonus they always give Scandinavian pilots.
A team that seems destined to repeat the project is that of the Hungarians Norbert Herzcig and Ramón Ferencz, who will again rely on the VW Polo R5 of BRR and the structure of MOL Racing. Next to them, another team that returns after several years in Polish exile, is Tomasz Kasperczyk, who along with Daniel Syty, who will undertake a season in which they will combine European and national Polish championship.

In the ERC 3 Junior category, the first to unveil his plans has been the Swedish Daniel Rädstrom, who parks his project in the JWRC with the aim of growing in the ERC. He will do it with an Orsak Motorsport R2T Fiesta, and will be one of the rivals of the Spanish pilot Pep Bassas. The winner of the 2019 BkR2 will be the pilot awarded by the RfEDA in the FIA ERC 2020, although equipment and saddle are still unknown. The two of them will be joined by Estonian Gregor Jeets, who will try to be in all the ERC 3 Junior events with an R2T Fiesta.
Within the ERC 3 category and the Ladies Trophy section, Ekaterina Stratieva intends to promote a solid project with a 208 R2 of Saintéloc Racing, same pretensions as the Italian driver Rachele Somaschini, who seeks to expand his project in the European championship on board of a DS3 R3T.

UNCONFIRMED RUMORS

To the string of confirmations, it is necessary to add a good list of pilots who have shown their interest in undertaking the FIA ERC 2020, but whose final projects are still maturing in that tortuous path called budget.

One of them is the Czech Erik Cais, who has almost closed his participation in the ERC 1 Junior with Fiesta R5 Mk2 from Orsak Motorsport. In this same category the Spaniard Efrén Llarena has secured two tests with an R5 after his title last year in the ERC 3 Junior, but seek to close a budget that allows him to be in the remaining four events of the category calendar. To them could be added names like Sindre Furuseth, the Austrian Simon Wagner, the Japanese Hiroki Arai or the national champion of Poland in 2019 Miko Marczyk. Another national champion, in this case from Germany, Fabian Kreim, could return to the FIA ERC after his good adventure in 2018, with the support of Skoda Germany.
Even without news of two of the candidates for the title in 2019 and frequent in the last years of the FIA ERC, Alexey Lukyanuk and Lukasz Habaj, it remains to be seen which piece plays the pluricampeón of the Middle East, Nasser Al-Attiyah, who after his victory on Last year in Cyprus, he dropped in an interview that attracted him to change the air in the panorama of the rallies and to bet on a championship tailored to him as is the ERC.
Niki-Mayr Melnhof seems destined to perform a full season in 2020 aboard a Ford Fiesta R5 Mk2 as reflected at the end of last year, a project similar to the one that the Russian driver Artur Muradian wants to outline with a Skoda Fabia R5 Evo of the team SRT Here we could include one of the Spanish hopes, Iván Ares, who at the end of 2019 defined as a dream for which they were going to fight to be in 2020 contesting the FIA ERC. To date, nothing more has been known about the intentions of the Galician pilot and his team to face this great project.
Other names already known, could return to the European Rally Championship scene, as is the case of Slovak Rally runner-up Gregorz Grzyb, or his homologous champion of this country, Martin Koci, to which the Polish pilot Jaroslaw Koltun must be added and the Turkish Orhan Avciolgu, all of them seek to close a budget that places them this year in the FIA ERC.

The Belgian driver Luc Caprasse (Abarth 124 Rally) or the Swiss Yoan Loeffler (Ford Fiesta Rally4) could realize their projects in the FIA ERC in the coming weeks.

Rally Islas Canarias (Gran Canaria) repeats as the most watched of the 2019 season of the FIA ERC with about 37 million spectators.

The Spanish event of the FIA European Rally Championship raised the bar last year by significantly increasing the number of viewers. These data were produced within a framework, that of the 2019 season, in which the continental contest also improved its audience figures.

One more year, the Canary Islands Rally was the most watched test on television throughout the 2019 season of the FIA European Rally Championship. This is stated in the report that Nielsen Sports, the consulting firm specializing in sponsorship and entertainment in sports, prepares for Eurosport Events, promoter of the continental event.

In the accumulated of the whole year, the 43rd edition of the Canary Islands Rally - which was held on May 2, 3 and 4, 2019 and in which Pepe López and Borja Rozada were imposed with Citroën C3 R5 - obtained an audience of 36.98 million viewers. Already in the analysis that the consultant developed when the FIA ERC 2019 had only held four of its eight tests, the Canary Islands appeared prominent in the viewer ranking. The incorporation in the report of those remaining rallies in which the championship was decided has not affected the leadership of the island rally.

Another fact that illustrates the specific weight that the Canary Islands Rally has in the ERC FIA scheme is that the second most watched event, the Poland Rally, obtained 29 million spectators, almost eight million less. The third meeting with the largest audience was the Rally di Roma Capitale with 23.5 million. Therefore, in addition to being one of the biggest rallies with a better atmosphere in attendance and timed stages, the Canary Islands Rally is confirmed as one of the most interesting for spectators worldwide according to this report from Nielsen Sports.

All these figures are produced in a framework, that of the championship promoted by Eurosport Events, which also threw record audiences in its 2019 edition. Despite having reduced the number of hours of broadcasting, the FIA ERC improved the number of viewers over the past year to overcome the 163 million barrier.

Jean-Baptiste Ley, coordinator of the FIA ERC, valued the results of this report: “Without a doubt this impressive number of audience gives a measure of the popularity of the Canary Islands Rally. The test has the advantage of being well consolidated and promoted at local, national and international level and this report data reflects all these attributes. Given the impressive and picturesque landscape of Gran Canaria, it is difficult not to produce spectacular television images. In addition, to be held in May, with the season still beginning, there are many stories to tell. In 2019, the fact that a young Spanish rider was in the fight for the victory from the beginning or the opening of the Abarth Rally Cup was influenced. In general we are very satisfied with the increase in the audience of the championship. Growing 52.7 million compared to 2018 speaks wonders of the strength and popularity of the ERC in its role as a talent factory. ”

Germán Morales, president of the Organizing Committee, has also valued these record results. “Honestly, we are impressed by the figures in the annual report. Not in our best dreams would we have imagined bringing the name of Gran Canaria and the Canary Islands to almost 37 million people around the world. This only confirms the power of promotion that this car test has, something that we have achieved among all: institutions, private entities, amateurs, athletes, organization and, of course, the European Rally Championship itself, a contest that continues to grow thanks to the sensational Eurosport Events work in front ”.

The 44th edition of the Canary Islands Rally, the most international of the rallies that will be held in 2020 in Spain, will be held on May 7, 8 and 9.

But it seems funding will decide if he can make WRC3 this year.

Lindholm was tarmac circuit driver before switching to rally...

Calendar clashes are probably biggest reason of Lindholm´s event choises, he is aiming for more WRC3 starts and is currently joint leader of Finnish championship, so doesn´t want to skip any events.

Great for ERC to have Luky confirmed and to see more support from Citroen and Total (perhaps a ‘benefit’ of them ending their WRC programme)

Last year it seemed that things weren’t always that smooth for Luky and Sainteloc and/or the car but the C3 seems to be much better now and I hope that will reflect in Alexey’s performance.

You can tell that to the Italians. It's no joke and the harsh measures are the only way to prevent what happened in Italy, i.e. oversaturation of the medical system. At this moment most of the European countries are on the same curve just shifted in time. Nothing was won and for most of the Europeans it's about to get worse in the coming weeks.

The Rally Islas Canarias is postponed until December 3,4 and 5

https://www.rallyislascanarias.com/i...until-december

The extreme measures taken in recent days to stop the expansión of the coronavirus have forced the Organizing Committee to delay its celebration. Both the FIA and RFEDA have already approved December, 3, 4 and 5 as a new date. With this, the ERC 2020 will finish in Gran Canaria.
The 44th edition of the Rally Islas Canarias cannot be held, as planned, on May 7, 8 and 9. The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus epidemic that is spreading throughout Europe and that has been affecting Spain in a special way in recent weeks has forced national and community authorities to take extreme measures that will last over time. In full countdown for its celebration, the Organizing Committee of the Rally Islas Canarias has had no option but to request a change of date due to the possibility that the test could not be carried out.
Being the most international of the rallies to be held in 2020 in Spain, the Canary rally requires, like the rest of the events of the FIA European Rally Championship, that this crisis be stopped. For this reason, Eurosport Events, promoter of the continental championship, and the FIA, in tune with the RFEDA, have wanted the 44th edition of the Rally Islas Canarias to take place on December 3, 4 and 5. With this, the Rally Islas Canarias will decide the ERC both in its absolute classification as well as in its two Junior categories. In addition, as the venue for the last event, Gran Canaria will host the final awards ceremony. The event organized by the Club Deportivo Todosport maintains its score for the Spanish Rally Championship (CERA) and the Spanish Superchampionship (S-CER).
“Needless to say, this situation was not in our plans, but during this time we have had the full support and understanding of Eurosport Events, the FIA and RFEdA. Keeping the date would have led us, quite possibly, to a hasty cancellation with uncertain consequences. This new location on the calendar allows us to work with all the enthusiasm and with the extra honor of being the rally that puts the end of the ERC 2020, also hosting the final award ceremony. December will allow us to show off more about our Archipelago, our landscapes and our climate”, said Germán Morales.
Jean-Baptiste Ley, the ERC Co-ordinator, said: “Clearly, postponing and rescheduling events brings upheaval and is not the work of a moment. By monitoring the situation on a continuous basis with all organisations who make Rally Islas Canarias possible, we have been able to secure an alternative date and maintain the planned eight-event calendar. We thank everyone involved for helping us to achieve this, including the promoters of other ERC events affected by the change of dates.
The Club Deportivo Todosport will not alter the route already established and that it will include the stages of ‘Valsequillo’ (11,91 km), ‘San Mateo-DISA’ (12,01 km), ‘Artenara’ (12,21 km) and ‘Tejeda’ (12,95 km) and the city super special of ‘Las Palmas de Gran Canaria’ (1,53 km) on the first leg and, during the second one, ‘Valleseco-DISA’ (14,17 km), ‘Gáldar’ (12,4 km), ‘Moya’ (12,7 km) and ‘Arucas’ (11,85 km).
