Yes, beginning to study these little changes. They avoid some flat out sections on Loelle Stage, and the returns of water splash of Su Filigosu in Monte Lerno Stage!!
Time to spend on the maps!! Thanks for it!

Can you please tell me where the water splash is located, thank you!
Starting road on Castelsardo also changed to last year. I remember a great spot near the elektric cable post, that will be point 1 on Friday!
Than Monte baranta, maybe the track in the beginning. Second loop, Tula Windmillfarm, Tergu at the absolute finish, great view!
Any tips on spectacular places still welcome!

The water splash is in the double right, 2 kms before the end, near Oschiri.
We will have to wait, that the route crossing the river, it's existing nowadays.
Another question for you, it's easy to arrive at the end of Tergu? A long walk till the end no??

Tergu is a long walk yes, but worth it (my opinion). I think its about 4 km.
No great close up action, but one can see about half the stage.

Also bear in mind this is just RG1 and last year they changed over the routes of Monti di Ala and Monte Lerno for RG2, the organizers of this rally have done it often before.

Im planning on taking the gold pass parking option. Have any of you got some experience whit that?
The gold zones at spectator areas are not necessary.
One gold parking card is enough for one car I suppose, I mean not al passengers must have one.

Yes one gold pass is good for the car park but only one person per pass can get into the gold spectating.

The last time this watersplash was on the route of the WRC event was 2011 and it's shown on the video. Rally-maps might have a wrong route on the 2011 stage because the river crossing is not a road in google maps. For this year the route is drawn by hand

2 years ago we were at the finish of Monte Lerno. The old splash was just next to it. I took a disappointing photo from it: http://i68.tinypic.com/2d6pjbq.jpg
If it's still like this I think they'll actually use the road that runs around it.

A few hundred meters before that splash however, there's a very impressive fast right-left combination, that goes downhill. It's between open fields, so it's good to be on a safe distance and have a good view.

Indeed, I went there 7 times. On at least half of the occasions the route changed some 1,5 month before the event. Compared to the amazing 2015 edition, all the years since then the itinerary looks quite dull.

I'm thinking about pickems or other predictions...it's just impossible to predict anyone else than the top three guys to get onto the podium. Remember last year how much faster Neuville and Ogier were against everyone else, and how much faster Tänak has been lately compared to anyone else. For sure they could have a bad road position on dry weather, but at the same time they seem to find their way around big issues the best.
From the rest, it's difficult to set anyone above the others. Maybe Lappi will pull himself together? Maybe Latvala or Mikkelsen will finally be lucky on an event they have been competitive before? Maybe Suninen can keep up his pace for more than one day without mistakes? Evans, Meeke...? Even Hänninen? I can't decide. It' s just the top three, and then there's everyone else.

6th June 2019, 14:55
If it stays dry I don't have so much belief the top 3 will (all) be up there. Last year can't be compared with the wet conditions.
Sardinia typically also has much more road cleaning than Portugal.
People like Suninen, Lappi or Sordo could be really high up after day 1.
The biggest lottery is retirements/issues as we have seen in Portugal.

If none of the others have issues on Friday the top 3 can end in 4th-7th place. With normal road cleaning and reverse order they will again be at some disadvantge the following days.

Too bad it was the last time he was like that in the whole season. Just shows us how leveled the trio is in this season, Tanak was waay behind the two after Sardinia last season.
In Portugal, Tanak did incredible job on Friday despite being 2nd on the road, there is no reason why he wouldn't do it again on Sardinia.
Don't forget that Ogier was almost minute slower than Tanak in Portugal although he didnt have problems at all and Tanak did. Also, it is about time for him to have some issues, last year in Sardinia he survived that huge rock on the road, this time he shouldn't be so lucky.

The weather which looked uncertain for Wednesday next week (beach and beer day!!) is now showing some light cloud for Weds / Thurs then high temperatures / full sun for the rest of the weekend. Road position in Sardinia is useful for the Friday morning. Expect Ogier to be 5th or 6th at midday. However this is a big field so there will be a lot of ruts and rocks for the second loop. This is a rally that often throws up a surprise and I'd say Neuville is perfectly placed. I'll be going for Neuville, Tanak, Ogier in that order. The pressure on the first 2 may cause cutting errors etc, something that rarely happens with Ogier

well, it was dry in 2017 and the podium in the end was 1. Tänak 2. Latvala 3. Neuville, who all were first starters. After Friday Paddon was leading, Latvala second, Neuville third and Tänak fourth, all within 10 secs from Paddon.
While looking at the past results, the thoughest part for the frontrunners is friday morning, this is where they lose a lot, they just have to survive that and the evening is already much better.
In that sense i agree with AnttiL that most likely the TOP3 will be on the podium again, out of those 3 Neuville has to be the favourite, won it in 2016 and 2018, on the podium in 2015 and 2017, very good record in last 4 years.
But in the same time, Latvala has shown good speed on past 2 events and he has excellent starting position, but the question is will he and his Toyota avoid the troubles, Lappi was on podium last year and also showed good speed in 2017.
Reading user racerx1979 comments on Toyotas damper issues in rally portugal thread, and that they could be even worse in sardegna, well, doesnt sound good and it seems you can already write 3 super rallies for them :D. Car and tyre management will be crucial like always at this rally.
The back starters definitely must take maximum out of friday, if not, then in the end the TOP3 will share the podium again.

8th June 2019, 20:23
For me it seems like the Big 3 is only expanding the gap to everyone else, so I wouldn't be one bit surprised if the podium in Sardegna will be Ogier-Tänak-Neuville in whichever order (Neuville maybe being the slight favorite though, based on his Sardegna record and road position). As ridicilous it may seem, I'd still pick JML - if anyone - to upset the odds and mix it up with the title contenders. If (and that's a big if) the Yaris would hold up and Latvala for once would have lady luck on his side everything's possible.

Yeah but who would he pick next? Not many active co-drivers with WRC experience out there.
There could be a lot of reasons for this change. Maybe there's something behind the scenes in the chemistry between the two? Maybe Salminen's lack of WRC experience shows in the current WRC world? Maybe Salminen is fed up with Suninen being mean to him (like in Arganil 2)? Maybe it's pressure from the management to get at least one good result this year in order to secure a seat for next year?

I think the Toyotas will struggle here especially on Friday. The weather is supposed to 38C and that will be horrible. Hyundais fuel issue can be a problem if they have not resolved it, but that would be a sad shame after Adamo saying they know the issue and will take care of it.
Latvala should do well here with his road position, but car problems could cause issues. JML's old school driving style also puts more stress on the vehicle with big slides and hard breaking to move the balance of the car. Citroen could do very well here. I'm thinking of moving Lappi higher up in my pickems because of 1. his road position and 2. Citroen's reliability. Ogier will be drastically affected by Friday's extremely dry stages, but the C3 copes well with heat.
My prediction as of today is Neuville, Lappi, Ogier, Sordo and Mikkelsen in the top 5 followed by the Toyota's. I say this only because I assume the Toyota's will struggle in the heat and semi rough roads. As for the Ford's it's up in the air for me as they have odd issues here and there, but nothing common and repetitive like the Toyota's and Hyundais. My heart on the other hand wants to see Latvala, Meeke and even Hanninen do well :).
Is Hanninen allowed to compete as a fourth car with different components?? If so, he could go well, but he's rusty in competition.
Fast Eddie WRC
11th June 2019, 16:46
Haninen's car isnt 'linked' to Portugal like the others as it didnt run there. So it can have a different brand of dampers.
Other changes like the brake cooling that was tested arent homologated.
Well they have allocated a certain set of dampers and other spare parts and that must be used. They cannot go and try a different damper brand to help coping in the heat.
So they can get new one with exact construction?

They are allowed to use X amount of dampers for the two events combined. And yeah I know it would be outrageous to change dampers without testing. That's what Hänninen is most likely doing.

They are allowed 5 sets for Portugal and Sardinia in total, I don`t know how these new rules are but it might be that the dampers are sealed so they can`t even make service on them until after Sardinia

In this Finnish interview Hänninen says (in his well-known humorous way) he hopes that the top guys will be so much faster than him already on SS2, that there wouldn't be any need to compare the times against them after that. And once again he says that this is just about testing and nothing else. Which, without a shadow of a doubt is true, but... once a rally driver, always a rally driver. We saw in Sweden how easy it was for Grönholm to "just enjoy the rally". Juho's my biggest modern day hero, and part of me hopes that he will call Tommi right after SS2 and tell him to forget about the test plan.

Sadly I didn’t get the best picture with the cleaning effect because basically they all had the gate moment. But looking at the second passes right after the first from Meeke, Evans and suninen they improved massively.
