Imo the most likely thing at Citroen is that they didn't focus on developing the tarmac car cause it seemingly was good enough from before, while others moved on.

It's probably the biggest frustration for me of WRC+ that they can't show these things in the coverage. It was the same with the Monte where there were some dry stages with maybe one really tricky snow section. And they completely missed it off the coverage. Just too rigid in terms of what they show.

er88
30th March 2019, 09:19

Yeah, it allows different tactics. Will you use the racing line over the gravel or keep it on the tarmac?

mknight
30th March 2019, 09:26
At splits every single driver is faster than Meeke (first on road) between splits 3 and 4. So finding a line must have been an issue.

So Evans actually lost more time saving tyres on the short previous stage than he did on the long one. If a gamble it didnt pay off...:(

Very short shighted point of view, as usual Eddie.
Look at it this way: Evans would have lost a shit load more time than he did, if he didn’t save his tyres on the earlier stage. By doing what he did, he’s only still a couple of seconds off Tanak, meaning he’s very much within striking distance, should Tanak suffer the smallest of glitches.
Thought you were an M-Sport fan... you should be buzzing that Evans, on pace alone, is so close to first place in Corsica.
There’s not many would have bet a fiver on that at the start of the year. If he gets second here and he’s fought so closely to Tanak, it will be like a win for him and the team.
Not all first places are victories.

Evans saying he was too careful on the middle stage and hopes to put it right this afternoon.

T16 you are talking crap as usual. Evans gained no advantage trying to save tyres. Tanak went flat out knowing the long stage would be dirty and tyre wear not a factor.

And being an M-Sport fan doesnt mean blind support. I hope they do well but I call it the same as for any other driver if they dont.

Very good surface, but slippery for sure. Also, on lefthanders, do you cut from gravel or keep on the tarmac? Or did the organizers put obstacles to prevent drivers from wrecking the road base?

i want to see onboard of Tänaks puncture causing moment.

Meeke admitted yesterday it was his fault, Latvala did the same today. But still strange they all had punctures in Monte and now here too. Fortunately for them next tarmac rally is far away :D

But yeah champsionship wise Ott now lost chunk of points but still all good and the second half of season is his better side.Certainly something Toyota will have a look at surely. They might be the drivers fault here (but in Monte it wasn't the case), and I just think maybe the Toyota is a bit weaker in that department (as in, it'll take a bit less to puncture a tyre than other teams?).

Meeke and Jari admitted their mistakes and maybe Tanak's was his own as well, but all 3 drivers getting punctures on two consecutive tarmac rallies is certainly an interesting coincidence :D.

Tanak and Meeke had the potential speed wise to take big points this weekend though, whereas Latvala probably wouldn't have. That is what will piss Makinen off, this should've been a big haul of pts for Toyota given the cars strength and the drivers speed. Big let off for Hyundai

100% agree -no one in the top 4 can cruise, 30seconds gap can disappear quickly as we’ve seen often in the last 2 days. Being on the podium in a car that isn’t working well (better than Sordo when it mattered though) says all you need to know

Yet, Mäkinen calls for the mousse to come back...

I wouldn't really mind. Even though on tarmac it's mostly Toyota that has punctures in Mexico basically every 2nd WRC car got a puncture, some even multiple ones (Ogier). On quite a few rallies last year the situation was similar.

But Porter mentioned on alllive that they were expensive (400 euro/piece) - that doesn't sound so expensive to me considering how much money teams use on carbon pieces that get ripped off every second stage.

Btw. Sordo said in the media zone that Sunday stages are quite bumpy, specially the first one.

But you're not going to increase the sustainability of these cars or bring more privaters by doubling the tyre budget

COD
30th March 2019, 22:45
Mouse tyre problems:
- very expensive
- more cutting, road degration (expensive for organizers, horrible for privateers, wrc2, juniors etc
- even less level playing field for private teams - no chance to get those tyres
- more punctures for those without mousse
- speed increase, demand for even slower roads

can they reuse the mousse when they change tyres?

if so it should be cheaper running with mousse than without, since you don't wreck the rim or anything else by driving on a flat tyre.

This is what the power stage will look like, as seen on this onboard from 2012. This year's stage starts from 6:33 and extends a bit further than in 2012. On the section from 6:33 to the finish the average speed on Breen's S2000 car is as high as 107 km/h. There's no junctions or other tight corners, no chicanes either, a couple of long straights even. This will be fast.

At least 2 of those punctures where caused by the drivers (Meekes first and Latvala). They admitted themselves.
I think there drivers take more risks (in cuts). I can't see any other explanation when they now used stronger rims and still have the same problem.

Makinen shouldn't ask for "runflat" tyres, he should search the real reason :)

When you look at the onboards, then other drives approached this corner the same way as Tänak and Latvala. I understand cutting the corners is always risky, but this is a bit strange.

- I was questioning the "very expensive" part. I dunno how the mouse is applied but I would assume you could attach it to the rim in some way (instead of the tire, or something similar with the same function). So their "use" will be on the order 10-15 per car/rally. With 400 euro per piece that is 6 000 euro which does not look expensive at all to me for WRC cars. Even if you attach one to each tire that is mounted on the car its about 30 tires/car = 12 000 euro. But this is just my quick assumptions which is why I write them here to get some feedback of people with more accurate figures.

- "Private teams" is kind of void if it's only allowed for "factory" WRC teams, only the likes of Suninen and Tideman were somehow "private" recently. But if the above listed price figures are anywhere near correct it doesn't look like a massive expense.

- Cutting and road degradation is a valid concern, how about allowing their use only on gravel roads (drivers cut there anywhere they can anyway).

- Speed increase (looking at avg. speed over stage, which is what FIA does) will be imo negligible (< 1 km/h)
