Well the heat caused the fuel pressure issue with the Hyundai's acc to Loeb. And the Fords also overheated a bit causing drivers to move off quickly at stage ends.

But the cars are generally quite fragile - only the Big 3 and Latvala have had no problems today..

This kind of discussion been here since Loeb from 2004 onwards, then with VW domination it was Ogier vs Latvala and now it's Ogier only.

They "always" seem to have less issues/punctures w/e. But that can be easily turned around. it's always the drivers like Latvala, Meeke, Evans, Mikkelsen etc etc. that have puctures, car issues etc. Over multiple tens of rallies it's not due to sheer coincidence. It's just that the multiple champions don't take those 0.05% extra risks and still are fast. Also they will rather take a bit slower time in one stage and drive it safely than risk issues. If you want to be a champion fighting them you have to learn that...as Neuville found out in 2017 and Tanak in 2018. Both these two look like they start to learn that skill now as well.

"I would have signed with both hands to be where I am tonight! As expected it's been tough but it was close to a perfect day for us, excluding SS1 where we had a small issue, running 35s without boost. Other than that we've done everything we could & I'm happy with the position"

We've done a good job, but if one man has done a better job it's definitely @OttTanak, who set really good times being 2nd on the road. 2nd place is not far, it has to be our target. And tomorrow will be very long, with rough conditions in some places. It's far from being over"

Rally Trivia 192
The manufacturers title fight for 2019 effectively started again from SS6 of Rally Portugal

At end of SS5 Hyundai and Toyota both had 192 virtual #WRC manufacturer points.
Toyota 149 + 25 + 18 = 192
Hyundai 178 + 10 + 4 = 192

after SS7 Hyundai would lead Toyota by 5 points
Hyundai 178 + 15 + 4 = 197
Toyota 149 + 25 + 18 = 192

Really enjoyable first day; we were on Góis ZE9, a fast downhill section ending on a 90 degrees right corner with a fabulous view. Besides the usual WRC and top R5 crews amazing show, it was great to see guys like Greensmith, Veiby, Loubet, Gryazin or Pietarinen also performing on a high level. A shame to hear about Hyundai and Ford issues, but the top 5 fight it’s still on and those 25s can fade away on 2nd leg challenging stages.

Btw, there was a cool moment on ZE9 when the first car appeared on the mountain skyline; despite the huge crowd, for some seconds everybody contemplated the scene in absolute silence, as in a sort of ritual…probably we all felt how great it was coming back to Arganil sacred rally country!

Was a shame how people were treated yesterday on Arganil stage, namely on ZE11. People walking 10 km climbing hill. After have arrived at up hill, marshalls and scurity forces told "it is not possible to cross the road to the other side", to the ZE efectivelly. Was stupid as their statement was "only after priority drivers would be available to cross the road". That was just stupid, as in my opinion all the cars could be dangerous, not only the priorities. People was treated like cattle in a fence. I am portuguese but I am ashamed about how organization treats the rally fans. They did not deserve the rally at their stages. This has to be told and shared.

No...this is basic rules in rallying. If you arrive late in TC, you start later, but you can be only late for 30(?) minutes, otherwise you're excluded. And obviously you get a time penalty for being late in TC. But it doesn't make a difference for these guys, having lost so much already.

It's very quick but there seem to be a few major reliability problems. I suppose the test programme wasn't thorough enough, especially surprising since they postponed the homologation date too.

It certainly shows how difficult it is to build a competitive and reliable R5 car.

Well they did manage that indeed (although i remember a couple of Fabias burning, it wasn't to the extent it has been with the Polo)

But they spent a very long time working on that project, even running the mechanicals in a Fabia S2000 shell initially before the new car was available.

And maybe running a works team helps them to quicker identify and get on top of problems too.

They burnt only at very specific circumstances. AFAIK what happened was that at high temperatures a faulty ventilation valve could cause the fuel tank to inflate so much that its wall clashed with the propshaft.
