The proposed date (14-17 February) is already considered as THE final date there. A lot of bookings have been made, flights have been booked, a lot of cars have been rented: don't wait!
I found a cottage in Torsby not far from the service park, there were plenty of seats left on the plane: never been so easy...

Hi, my name is Arturo, this is my first time planning to watch some stages of rally Sweden. Some friends and me will go from Karlstad to look for some spot to sit and see the rally, do any of you know if it's difficult to sneak into some random part of the stage and just take a sit without being spotted? Maybe is easier than I think but I want know about people that have been there before.

It's both hard and easy to be fair.
There are many parts of the stages without marshalls (I assume you want to get in for free, and be able to stand where you wish). However, with a winter like the one last year, it takes time and energy to get there. The roads to the stages that are prepped will be crowded. So you'd need to find an unprepped road, which leads to the risk of getting stuck. Or walk long distances in deep snow.
Either that or get on the stage the day before, park up in any kind of small road and then walk on the stage.

Hi Arturo,
If you spent money to come to Rally Sweden you also must be able to afford Rally pass. So you don´t have to try to sneak in all the time. Should say you´ll fail in the end.
Maybe at Rally Finland in the summer it´s possible, but in Sweden in winther no way.

It's quite simple. Buy a rally pass, see which access roads are possible, and get to the stage. Make sure you arrive in time, as during the last 30 minutes before the stage starts you are not allowed to be on the road anymore. Also the access roads are often jammed, a lot of people are coming to watch the event. It's better to be 1,5 hour early than 10 minutes late... Always listen to the stewards, in Sweden they are very reasonable. If they say something is not OK for them, there's a reason for it. Also when crossing the road during a stage, remember that cars start every minute or two, but one can be slower than another or can make a mistake. So there's absolutely no guarantee that you have a full minute after a car passed. Try to listen to what's coming, but remember that the sound of the cars is more quiet than in other events, especially with fresh snow. Also the later R5 cars (especially Fabia) are very quiet which makes them a bit more dangerous...
And last but not least, NEVER sit down during a rally. When a rally car goes off at 145kph, it means 40 meters per second. There's already very very little time to react, but if you sit down it's completely impossible to make a reaction.

Well, using the word "sneak" means in my world he´s too stingy to pay for being on a stage.

Hello there,
We shall be visiting Rally Sweden for the first time this season - a nice Christmas present was two weekend tickets.
We are flying into Stockholm on Wednesday, hiring a car and plan to see Shakedown, the Norway stages and Sat/Sun undecided yet.
Does anyone have any tips for accommodation please? Where is a good place to stay?
Secondly, how is driving in the snowy conditions, please? Being from Britain, where we get a bit of snow one day of the year and the whole country goes into a panic, I'm a rookie in this regard.
Any help would be much appreciated!

For accommodation you are quite late, the best locations will be booked already long ago. Best options would be to look on the website of Rally Sweden > accommodation, or maybe try to send an e-mail to Hagfors Turist Information. Snow driving is no problem in Sweden, the winter tyres are completely different and far better than what you find in UK/Belgium/France etc. Everyone's driving nearly as fast as in summer I think. Also there's not as much traffic on the road as in the UK, so apart from what the rally could cause, you shouldn't expect any traffic jams. Just be careful with respecting speed limits, and with alcohol (zero tolerance). They do a lot of checks on both, and penalties are huge, especially in Norway.

Very similar in terms of time to travel from both if you are going to Karlstad. If going to Torsby then Oslo is closer. One advantage of Arlanda is the hire car will likely have studs, where the hire cars in Norway are only winter tyres

I prefer Oslo, i live in this area and try to always fly out to Europe from Oslo.
Oslo (Gardermoen who is 45 km north of Oslo) , around 200 km to Karlstad ,Arlanda are 300 km to Karlstad
And also if you will go on sunday back you have only 140 km to Oslo Airport from Powerstage, to Arlanda its over 400 km from Torsby if you go on big roads.

You have 4,5 seasons of old onboards and highlights there available for the time between rallies. Well, at least I couldn't live a month without WRC+ ;) All Live is a different story, of course, it's only usable when there's a rally going on.

You could play around with monthly payment and you might be able to safe couple of euros that way. Also 9e is nothing compared to what you have to pay to watch almost any other sport, atleast in Finland. Everything is behind pay TV and that's almost always 20€/month and might even require to purchase the package for a year straight.
So WRC+/All Live is not expensive at all.

Is there any other than Sweden and Finland which are spectator friendly by telling some entries before deadline?
PLuto
13th January 2019, 12:50
I am not surprised that organisers are not publishing draft versions of entry lists. There is lot of things and changes which are usually made also after regular deadline, on the other hands there are entered crews who doesnt want to reveal their participation before exact time. Great example should be Dani Sordo and Barum Rally - we had his entry form, but they wanted to reveal by themselves officially. That Dani's interview to spanish newspaper is different story...
tommeke_B
13th January 2019, 12:55
Maybe it's a good idea for organizers to add an option to their entry forms, if you do or do not want your entry to be published before the publication of the seeded entry list.

The fifth one could have easily been Huttunen, but now that the Hyundai program is scrapped and he's entered with a Fabia it obviously won't be him. Really confusing. In a perfect world it would be a Hänninen/Markkula reunion, but that it won't be either.

According to this Finnish website (consider it as a reliable source) the fifth Finn driving the latest WRC machinery will be good old Janne Tuohino. Mikko Markkula will codrive and the car is 2017-spec Fiesta.
edit. So my pure speculation was quite close after all. Instead of Hänninen/Markkula it will be a reunion of Tuohino and Markkula, who drove together in 2005.

However, the forecast for Torsby is quite similar. Nice amount of snow the coming days, but loads of rain at the end of the long-term forecast. Hagfors however will not get any rain, but the same amount of snow. So I'd say the long term forecast is quite unstable atm and nothing to pay too much attention to. If the forecast for the 3rd, 4th and 5th of February is the same when we enter February, it is time to get a bit unhappy.
Though, a day with rain, and then freezing temperatures will just be nice in terms of a bit of solid ice.

Hopefully it will freeze again Before rally. Then we´ll have perfect surface.

Hello. For those who have spectated the first part of vargasen, wich road do you take for arriving there, the one thaht comes from the north or the other from the south? Anyway, do you know if some of those roads are closed during the rally? Do they cut the road from a lot of distance befire the stage start?
Is there anyone near the area that can drive and record the rammen stage? Or anyone that have a video from there?
Anyone trying to see 2 stges in the saturday morning loop?

Route preview. Not much to write about in terms of changed itinerary, but I tried to analyze the stages in greater depth through onboards. The ones I would like to highlight are Hof-Finnskog being almost completely sixth gear stuff between numerous junctions and Vargåsen, with a very technical road before Colin's Crest.

I guess one problem holding back WRC2 Pro, is that bar VW and Skoda, the other manufacturers with competitive cars already promote their brand in the main WRC class. Back in the peak IRC days for Skoda, Peugeot, Fiat, Proton S2000 was their top product.

There are two roads from the south and one coming from the north into the same junction as the 2nd one from the south.
After they made the stage shorter the 1st one from the south has been quite crowded and a few cars falling into the ditch as It's a bit narrow, If you're early/lucky you can park 50-100m from the stage at all places.
Going from Rämmen to Vargåsen the shortest route after WRC will probably work but not sure i would recommend it.

Put some fir branches under your feet, it isolates you from the frozen ground.
Bring a disposable grill with you, and some swedish sausages with the proper breads.
Do not forget a small camping seat, your buttocks will not be wet!
In case of extreme cold, take some logs with you and make a fire.

@Tomhlord: Ski wear, Woolen underwear both top and legs under your ski wear, water proof boots (I use the SOREL winterboots), Bring wood, knife and axe for fire, Jagermeister/beer and remember water, Coffee/tea you can cook over the fire, Find places in the sun if it is sunny, Use grane tree leaves/sticks to stand on. You can't stay warm, simple as that. No matter what you're wearing, first your feet will start to freeze and there's no coming back from that. But hey, it's all part of the experience.

Are you all going on a Northpole expedition? :)
I have been until now 14 times in Rally Sweden and NEVER had any problems with the cold wearing standard ski outfit (underwear and ski wear) and good winter trekking boots suitable for -30 degrees and more. Maybe cap and gloves to change if they get wet. If it is a really cold year just put one or two tshirts more on and thats it.
No need for fires, coffee, soups, alcohol, knives or axes or whatever. How do you bring all this stuff to the stage? :)
I prefer to stay flexible and change my location during the day on the stage - then there is absolutely no need to build half a campsite.

Alcohol expands blood vessels and it creates a deceptive sense of warmth. In fact in that way the body starts to cool.
So if someone decided to use alcohol you just need to find a reason other than warming up :)

That sounds about right regarding ice on the roads. I'd guess there being 45-50cm of snow in the area right now. Long term forecast is extremely unstable though, it could be anywhere from +5 to -10 degrees by the looks of it.

For instance, only yesterday (and the whole week before) i was promised by yr.no to get 6mm of rain from yesterday 18pm until now and + degrees. It is warm, but what wasn`t there, was the rain, got wet snow instead. And plus degrees should have laste until tomorrow 14pm, now they are predicting <0 degrees from 00.00 onwards.
Plus degrees and a bit rain, like i am seeing in yr.no should do good for the roads there, when it gets colder right after.

Well lots of snow looks nice and provides great snow banks. However snow itself is quite loose and won't provide much grip or solid base layer. Ice is achieved by lots of snow that is compress by vehicles (temps around 0 required( and then freezing. Repeat that (cold weather and new snow then warmer weather for a few days followed by longer periods of colder weather) a few times and you will get very good conditions. However if it is too warm or just cold with powder snow the road conditions won't be good.

As classic and predictable as the weather-panic is, so is your whining about it, N.O.T.
Of course for many people it IS a big deal. For example for people who actually spectate the events and enjoy them, unlike you... Also those places forecasted aren't that populated, not like a larger city, so the population there has no visible effect on the temperature. Fortunately it's a long term forecast, if the forecast for those days is still the same or worse by the end of next week, we can start to panic. Friday stages seem to be safer, however.

It's a more complex situation than one weather forecast. The Norway stages will have different climate to that of the Saturday stages, and in the forests there are more shady and more open places. And like we saw in 2016 the organizers can still do a lot by canceling the worst stages and repairing the better ones to make the rally run through instead of canceling altogether. And finally, these forecasts are for a week ahead, and that is still almost a full week before the rally starts. A lot can still happen. We just have to wait.

Now the forecast has at least turned better, being on the plus degrees only from Saturday morning to Monday afternoon, returning onto good minus degrees on Tuesday, meaning it should create a good ice layer.
