Date proposed for Rally Sweden 2018:

February 15-18 is proposed as the date for Rally Sweden 2018.

Rally Sweden together with WRC Promoter have agreed around the proposal February 15-18 as the date for Swedens WRC-event 2018. FIA World Motorsport Council needs to confirm the date which will happen after the summer. The date is with all influencing factors the most reasonable one and from now on we will work in this direction says Rally Swedens CEO Glenn Olsson.

Looks very similar to the 2017 route except that Knon has been replaced by Torntorp.

Shakedown, Karlstad, Hof-Finnskog, Svullrya, Vargasen, Likenäs are identical to 2017

Röjden, Torsby, Hagfors have some changes

Torntorp (last time driven 2014) and Torsby sprint (part of Torsby stage driven last year) are new in the itinerary

Worst possible route in 2018. For swedes. For Norweigans and Värmland inhabitants, no problem. Gets more and more a local western Swedish rally. Bääähhhh!!!!

And what makes 2018 itinerary soo much worse than 2017 or even the years before? I have been in Rally Sweden in last 8 years and it was not that much different to spectate in all that years, being a Swede or a Norwegian or a German. Sometimes it really looks one has to find anything just to make a bad comment...

I can give you thousand reasons. RS isn´t what it used to be. Same stages all over again. Stages in the middle of nowhere for Swedes living outside Värmland. No new thinking, only bcs they want to stay in Karlstad, but should needed to be in places where stages can be held properly. Would rather see complete new thinking about where to have the HQ and the whole rally.

People are constantly complaining about everything. And it going to worse. Be happy that there is still rally. Some of us haven't that luck of being watch it closely...

Isn't this the issue with a lot of WRC events? The same stages year in, year out - it all gets a bit repetitive.

Whatever happened to the epic Jutbo stage? Remember it causing carnage back in 1998; Radstrom went off, Sainz had a 360 spin, McRae had electrical issues, etc

And it looks like it'll be like this in 2018 as well. The core and the base will remain, but we are expecting to see something new again.

Sweden's route lacks imagination. If I were to make decision about going, this itinerary doesn't make it more interesting.

Well, it's not that easy for the organizers. They're supported (a lot I suppose) by the Värmland region, so all Swedish stages are in that region. They can't go more up North (because they'll go outside Värmland, and may not have similar support for the rally there), going South is a big risk with the unpredictable climate. Colin's Crest is probably a must-do for many sponsors... So it doesn't leave much space for something very different from what we have now and had over the last few years.

Anyway, I'm fine with the itinerary, looks quite ok for spectating. I just booked the flights and rental car, rented a house just North of Torsby. Will be my 5th Rally Sweden, already looking forward. :)

This is my 2nd year going back. We have accommodation & flights booked. Anyone any suggestions on cheapest place for car rental? Prices seem very high this year.

Rally Sweden will allow national cars for this edition of RS. http://www.emotorsport.se/nyheter.php?in=2&nyhets_id=14684
Allowed 4WD cars are Mbi Mirage R5 + EVO 7-9, Subaru Impreza 2002-2005, older Super 2000 cars from Ford, Peugeot and Skoda.
Allowed 2WD cars are Honda Civic Type R, Ford Fiesta St and 3 Renault Clio models.
Entry is open since Friday.

BTW. Interesting thing is that eligible S2000 cars for national championship are Ford Fiesta, Skoda Fabia and Peugeot 207. I think it is the same for international championship. Does it mean all other brands have outdated homologation? I know Punto S2000 is useless for racing but I thought it has still valid homologation.

Those national "S2000" cars are all outdated, with FIA spec you can (and must) enter RC2-class.

I’ve read somewhere that R4 will only be allowed in WRC from 2019, although they’ll run in Regional and National series next year. As it’s a new category (the kit will be homologated during the next days), probably FIA doesn’t want to have another “full house” category, like this year WRC Trophy…

But it should be inside RC2, S2000 and old N are in there without many entries. I see no problem.

There is a point that you miss with R4. It is market purpose is different. Cars will be eligable for Non-european WRC events as Oreca mentioned.
The reason is creating your R class car with local ASN approved car.

Hi Folks, just wondering if there are people I could hook in with cruising around for the Sweden rally, I'm pondering going as I have a conference in Belgium the week before. Not to keen to do it myself as it looks to be a bit of a mission without some local knowledge

Less than a week until entries close I believe and they haven't exactly been flying in for Sweden. Not from what we've seen on the website anyway. Hoping for the big surge after the launch tomorrow, and most of the factory teams yet to go up.

I did read today that Mathias Adielsson will do the rally in the Pontus Tidemand Racing Fabia. His planned full-season ERC campaign fell through which is a shame.

31 entries now and the most of WRC entries still missing. It's normal Sweden. If it goes over 50, it's a lot. They lack in R2 entries.

A good Historic field as well. Still missing some Gr.A 4x4 cars, hopefully they will come shortly. Fairly nice winter conditions at the moment as well, might come 15cm snow on the Norwegian side the next days as well :)
I think it will be a nice weekend in the forest!

I actually think that driver that would surprise us could be Marcus Grönholm. I know that Prodrive was the entrant, and the ones running that Subaru in Portugal for Grönholm, but it was a car from Adapta.

Good entrylist for Sweden.
Would have liked to see a top driver in a Mirage to measure it vs the Top R5 cars on snow.
Jarkko Nikara will be fun to follow in a Mäkinen Fiesta R5. He might be a real surprize, if he finds his rythm!

Also a couple of cars i Historic.
A swede in a Alpine A310, a few quattros and Mazdas, and a Gt4.

well, EvoX is only RC2 Mitsubishi available, all other evo´s including Evo9 are too old cars and belongs to NAT4-class, simple!

Its because there is national winter vacation in the school in Norway and Sweden that week and the week after, depends on where you live in the country.

We are flying into Stockholm. I know it’s around 1 hour extra drive but flight was a lot cheaper and also car rental worked out cheaper from there.

Maybe also Landvetter Gothenburg is alternative? Have no idea myself, but don´t think ARN is bad either.

In terms of distance Gothenburg is similar to Stockholm ARN indeed. Also check Stockholm Bromma, it's a little closer, small airport, easy to arrive and leave. I flew to Bromma 3 times. Also checking Stockholm Nykoping (lots of flights with Ryanair) can be interesting. This year we're flying to Oslo Gardermoen, which is the closest to the rally now. Before booking it's interesting not only to compare the costs of the flights themselves, but also check the price of the rental cars. I don't know why, but the prices of rental cars can differ a lot from time to time and from airport to airport.

It looks like it doesn't. At least it's not in the list on FIA website: https://www.fia.com/file/65105/download/9293?token=P01P9A00 (only Evo X inside).

EDIT (after private chat with PLuto): It's still permited in FIA events under exception.

Strange because Evo9 was not allowed in WRC events last year. (it was allowed in ERC but not in WRC)

And then just select whatever stage you want to see , the info is there , this is last years stages and the new ones this year aren't updated yet but should be soon hopefully.

Not in international events, no. Homologation can be extended for other rallies I think.

They weren`t allowed to compete internationally since the 1600 cm3 came. So 7 seasons.

So now i am back in the forum after a long time away.
Yesterday was a terrible weather day here in the area for Rally Sweden, rain, hard winds and many + degrees.
Lost around 20-30 cm of snow in my city on 24 hours. But looks much better in the forest.
If the cold come back now as they says there will be perfect conditions, on the small roads were the stages are this weather good because makes more ice. And there are a LOT of snow, from 50 cm to 120 cm of snow were the stages are.

Weather should be ok indeed, only lost around 10cm of snowdepth in the mild weather (with some rain) last week. And it will come more than 10cm of snow this week if the prognosis is somewhat correct.
Also, the rain that came, was followed by some days with sub-zero degrees, but no snow, which made for a very solid ice-base(on top of some more loose snow).
It really needs to be a "heat"wave the week the rally is to get problems with the conditions this year, not at least on the Norwegian side that once again looks solid.

That stage happens to run in the dark? I was planning to attend it, but if I remember correctly from itinerary it was a last one on the Friday... so not so good for spectators and also for filming?

Last one on Friday at 16:56 and sprint version at 19:26 on Saturday but also powerstage at 12:18 so you will be able to reach the start after doing Likenäs twice. The sprint version doesn't have the new start, it's more like a shortened version of last year's Torsby. But all three stages share the same ending, which concludes all of Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

I know, that's why it called sprint ;) Starts just after the airport entry then. I think i have driven the new road once but i don't remember it had any good places.

I remember one Rallye Monte Carlo, where one friend from Madeira was with us. He was completely unprepared with cloths, for first time he saw the snow... ...and survire :) I can only recommend proper clothes - thermal underwear, winter shoes, winter trousers, winter coat, gloves, winter cap (you can buy an original one in Sweden too (http://rallysweden.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/official_merch_staende.jpg).

Pluto answered already and I can second what he said. Dressing in layers is important. Long, thermal underwear, maybe a t-shirt and winter jacket + trousers is enough for walking from car to the spectating point. Something extra to wear when spectating, a fleece or a hoodie, it can be hours standing still. Woolly hat is a must (actually the official one is very good!), for hands gloves topped with mittens do the job. Good and warm shoes are the most important part - and a scarf.

Spectating in winter is a lot about proper gear. It gets unpleasant if you get really cold. Digging a camp in the snow or diģging rally cars out of snow helps! At least food don't go bad in warmth, it may freeze however. Atmosphere on Rally Sweden stages is always superb. I'd suggest avoiding the biggest spectator areas and find your own spot in the forest, share it with a few other fans and enjoy the winter days outside. I'm sure you'll love it.

In my opinion you can overact with everything else, but not with the shoes. When spectating a winter rally, one thing you just must have are proper winter shoes and wool socks, otherwise you're doomed.

About clothes.. Just don't use any cotton stuff (especially socks or t-shirts). If it gets wet, it gets cold.

Pretty warm is merino woll. It keeps you warm even if it's wet. But expensive (=worth it).

Good shoes (Kamik i.e, or some goretex) to keep your feet dry and warm.

I can vouch for this brand. Winter boots serves me ten years already. With two pair of socks (one them wool socks) and these boots I have survived even minus 28 degrees quite well. I prefer model with removable inner boot which one is recommended to take out in evening to dry before next rally day.

I've spent quite a lot for my first Rally Sweden, but now going for the 5th time sure it is worth it. Some good jacket, pants and especially shoes are important. Most difficult is to keep warm on shakedown, as you're standing still for a very long time. A good tip can be to put some plastic (or tree branches) under your feet, to keep the snow away from your shoes. If it's really icy like 2 years ago, it can be handy to get some "spikes" for your shoes. They cost nearly nothing and you can buy them at most petrol stations. For those who forget something or have issues with shoes or anything else, it could be interesting to know there's some sports/outdoors store in Torsby not so far from service, at the ICA Supermarket (roundabout where E16 meets E45). We've needed it once for a friend who's shoes weren't waterproof enough.

But ok, I've never had really cold temperatures in Sweden, sure there are some guys with a lot of experience on this forum to tell more about it... ;)

There can be minimal roadcleaning or playing a snowplow. Winter roads... First passers also have to create a line each time, because national and historic use narrower tyres.

Everybody thinks they are smart..But after living I don't know how many winters in Sweden I often say "OK you think you're smart and the brain is important...Try this: freeze your feet and tell me how well you can think."

On shoes....make sure there is plenty of room..Air is insulator...Try the shoes with the correct socks and feet not JAMMED in...If too small by 1/2 size it smooshes the wool....foot in contact with outside of shoe and you freeze foot and brain stops functioning.

then there will be international scandals in the worlds press.

I say this as somebody who win the transit over 9 other cars leaving parking in Sweden spectator area back to main road... 15km and started maybe 10 position...by the last long downhill into 1st.. Handbrake turn for last ^ onto main road.....and first car I see coming other way was cop car. Thank god he don't see because Swedish Polis are specially chosen for extra low intelligence.....in other countries they would be in a nice comfortable place with rubber walls but there it is employment...they get very excited...be relentlessly cheerful, thank them for being very nice and helpful for explaining things and ask them LOTS of complicated questions---like directions, museum opening times, act very pleasant but stupid...(All Swedes think everybody else is some degree stupider..English -10%, Norwegians -90%, Finns -110%, everybody else even stupider...so make them happy)

So to review...good socks, maybe thin by the skin then THICK wool and lots of space.

And depending on temp, an umbrella...worst thing in the world is standing in snow on feet in the rain at +2-5*

I have more or less everything under control by now. Proper jacket-trousers-thermal first layer... and boots. May be I'll take your advice and go for good socks!

It's not easy to say, if there is a snowfall right before the start, it will be a disadvantage starting first, if it snows during the stage, it's all depending on how much it snows. If the roads are completely clean, it can be an advantage running first. There was a couple of years with VW where Ogier complained about running first in Sweden, but the fact was, he had the best conditions. As the roads were solid, no snow on top, and for each car that passed, the studs ripped out some ice"dust" that made it slightly worse for the next car.

I use my alpine-clothing with long underwear. So, I pair up

Jacket-wise it depends on the temperature really, I tend to carry two just in case. And of course a beanie or something to keep your head warm.
While the pants can look and feel like they will get to hot, I find that the alpine/snowboard pants are extremely comfortable to wear, they also tend to have many small zippers you can open up to get a bit of air in (not directly to your underwear, but opening up the outer layer of the clothing). And this way you will avoid overheating and sweating.

It's also a bit better to start out without the warmest clothes (if you have more stuff with you). As it is easier to realize that you will get a bit cold, and put on something a bit thicker/warmer. Than if you start out with too much clothing, and start to sweat. That sweat will get cold, and then it doesn't matter what you do, if you remove clothes to get normal temperature, or put on more clothes, you will stay cold due to the sweat.

On the bright side though. It's a myth that you get a cold/flu from being cold. You need to be in contact with the virus. So being cold is just not a good feeling, but it won't make you sick. If you have contacts with loads of people and so on, you will have a bigger risk, but just from being cold, you won't get sick! :)

Drinking beer in same can as your mates is not troublefree either for getting a cold. Even worse drinking from a complete strangers can. Can be a lot of that, meeting other fans out on stages!! ;) ;)

Yup, I actually don't use double socks, or woolen socks. Just a bit thick normal ones.
These heatpads does work for heat, just again, be careful to not get so hot that you start to sweat, or use so many that your body decided to cool down from "overheating" :)

Certainly Sweden and Finland are the two rallies where Toyota is likely to be the strongest. Just like last year when they won both events.
That said last year after Sweden they had 4 rallies without podium (all due to being too slow) and after Finland they again were not on podium for last 4 rallies (only good pace was in Australia).

Toyota will be really strong in Sweden. They have been testing so much on snow this winter! All drivers test 4days atleast! Tomorrow I´m going to follow JM test near Jyväskylä. it's really a big advantage that they get tested without any restriction in the Jyväskylä area.

I think Latvala is strong favourite for win but Ott can make 2nd surprise. If there is lot of snow in friday stages can Lappi be leader friday night. 7th starting position is so big advantage. Very interesting rally comeing.. Can´t wait!

Hänninen finished 4th in both Germany and Catalunya. In Catalunya he was 55" off Meeke. In Germany all three crews scored fastest times. Not exactly off pace in my opinion.

Clothing for sweden, tips: generally is many thin layers better than few and thick. It is air between the layers that keeps you warm.

Wool as inner layer. Wool is warm even when wet/sweaty.
turtle neck with zip is smart. Zip to adjust air in/out.
Next layer on upper body could be a fleece sweater with zip, or a jacket.
In addition bring a warm thick knitted sweater of wool, to put on when standing still to watch.
Outer layer need to be wind proof, and water repellant in case of rain. An alpine/ slalom two piece dress is perfect.

last but not least, a wool tight knitted beanie, could be with fleece. 60-70% of heat loss from the body happens through the head.

Nice thick boots with extra inner sole, again wool. You need thick socks, wool again, so they need to be a number larger than you normally use, but not as big so that your foot moves a lot inside the boot. But it is the air in the sock that keeps you warm.

Glowes when you walk and wool mittens when you stand still.
Small backpack to keep the clothes you do not wear when you move.

This is meant to dress for days from minus 10 to minus 20, and have a nice day outside in cold weather.
Do not thing of crazy nordic people with little to no clothes, most of them are used to and their body adapted to cold weather during many years. (Or stupid and or drunk)

Same with us going to warm climate, the body takes time to adapt to big changes!
it is much easier to adjust cold climate with correct clothing, than going from 15 to 50 degrees. When you only have the speedo left, not much more to help the body with, apart from ac, shadow and cold beer :beer:

have a safe trip, come prepared!

In 2018 Monte Meeke finished 4th and won the power stage ;) Relatively similar.

Imo it's quite clear that in 2017 M-Sport had allround the best car, they were clearly fighting in top 3 on every rally.

Hyundai was 2nd best with lack of consistent pace in Finland and Spain (on tarmac).
Toyota would come after with Mexico, Argentina, (Poland - in dry conditions), Germany, Spain, GB to name a few.
With Citroen it's easier to count where they actually were competitive and you get 4 rallies.

You don't exactly see drivers leaning on armco guardrails either.

All those are from the Swedish side, it was closed by the border in the north tonight. Funny how they clear the roads different on the Swedish side both on the main road and in the forest, it's not so straight in Norway and not that hard, it was a bit hard finding good place since you don't see much this year. Video coming from the old Finnskogen stage at Rally Finnskog today close to Svullrya and Røjden.

For the snow to disappear you'd need a week with 5+ temps (especially for day 1), that's extremely unlikely.

More (fresh) snow would mostly make a difference on friday due to the running order.

But I get what you mean, there is whole lot of options between these two and a day or two with warm temperatures can make the surface more icy, while some snowfall will make it more slippery.

Yes they can... our latest pluss degrees with rain, which melted all the snow and ruined ice tracks, was supposed to be -15 all the time, forecast changed 5/6 days before. On the plus side it was supposed to last for a week, but only lasted 5 days (again changed). But hopefully it won`t happen again, nice winter is back and February is supposedly the coldest month of the year/winter. About time too to get some normal winter weather. Hasn`t happened for 4 years now, let`s hope 5. is the real one again. Started a bit late, but March is also still ahead.

Apart from the other RACs mentioned before, also 1981 RAC had 13 past event winners. (Toivonen, Vatanen, Alén, Frequelin, Mikkola, Salonen, Waldegård, Ragnotti, Mouton, Kulläng, Eklund, Blomqvist and Clark.)

1991 RAC would still get my vote as the all time best WRC rally entry list. With the exception of Waldegård and Röhrl, all World Rally Champions from 1979 to 1999 took part in that rally, all in official factory cars. Lancia, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Ford, Mazda and Nissan all brought cars to that rally. That rally also saw Colin McRae spectacularly leading a WRC event for the first time as well as deciding a third title for Kankkunen, which was a new record at the time. What a rally.

Accuweather says now no snowfall for the whole event in Torsby (including Thursday) except for little snow on Saturday morning. Also some snow on Svullrya on Friday.

Yr.no says a bit snowfall on the night between Thursday and Friday.

Foreca does indeed give snowfall from Thursday to Saturday, but I don't trust it so much.

I'll add it myself so you don't have to make a reply: it's too early to say.

Most likely the parking at stages will be big issue this year, access roads are narrow and fields have 60+ cm of snow. Thank god we rented 4X4 Volvo for this year.

Well I said Toyota really should be winning this event due to the huge testing advantage they've had on the other teams (and the fact they won the event last season too), however the road order on day 1 seems like it could be a massive factor in the result. So Mikkelsen is in a superb position to take advantage, and we know the Hyundai was supremely fast here last season. Difficult to tell what Paddon can do and where his mind is, but he also has a great start position. After losing places on the last stage in Monte, Lappi could be a dark horse as well and along with Mikkelsen, will be thinking he could make a bit of a gap on day 1 if things go well.

Yeh, if it's very snowy, Ogier, Tänak and Latvala may be in trouble, whereas Neuville will have an advantage. Østberg, Suninen and Paddon are starting as last WRC cars, but will they have more or less advantage from the road position?

weather is extremely unstable right now, so forecast now is a bit pointless, if you look probablility maps, then we can expect 1-45 cm snow during next one week:) Only sure thing is that it will be unstabe, that means some strong wind, some snowstorm, some rain, some snow, rapid temperature fluctuation. So, please take very windproof clothes and be ready for wet snow and cold :)

Well I said Toyota really should be winning this event due to the huge testing advantage they've had on the other teams (and the fact they won the event last season too), however the road order on day 1 seems like it could be a massive factor in the result. So Mikkelsen is in a superb position to take advantage, and we know the Hyundai was supremely fast here last season. Difficult to tell what Paddon can do and where his mind is, but he also has a great start position. After losing places on the last stage in Monte, Lappi could be a dark horse as well and along with Mikkelsen, will be thinking he could make a bit of a gap on day 1 if things go well.

absolutely agreed...thats why i dont agree that Toyota guys will definitely win because their starting position is a disadvantage. Last year Neuville was 8th on the road on day one and he had a 28 sec lead after the day and 43 sec lead on day 2 before he binned it.

Although Ogier - Latvala - Tänak started as the first three on the road and they did actually quite good being 5th, 2nd and 3rd respectively after day one.

So, my money is definitely on Mikkelsen/Neuville and Lappi being the dark horse.

Agreed, but I would pick Paddon as the dark horse. He did some great times last year when his power steering was working, and finished 2nd in 2016. It's more of a mystery what Lappi can do, alongside Suninen and Østberg .

Yes, Paddon too if he has regained his old form

and you never know with the Hyundai guys, Mikkelsen and Neuville on the paper but they tend to do some little mistakes which turn out to be costly or then the car has some issues...

2016 was with older car. To say the truth, Paddon had problems to be fast with new WRC cars.

Ogier has to open the road with no lines to follow and judge everything for himself on what could be very tricky roads.

Driving fast but minimising mistakes is what makes sucessful rallying. It's up to the others to learn this...

I reckon the Toyotas are going to be the ones to beat but they will push each other so hard that two of them will make costly mistakes.

I feel the Citroens and Paddon will be nowhere due to lack of form and preperation.

Neuville will make a silly mistake again somewhere, while Mikkelsen will be able to show more consistency.

Ogier despite his road position will be able to salvage a podium. Evans will have a couple of spins which will land him a lower midfield result. Suninen will play it safe to start the season well and by making no big mistakes he will get very close to the podium.

Let's see how well my crystal ball was calibrated.
