I know it's a bit soon to start a thread about it but since I've seen this piece of news: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/129783/peugeot-will-quit-dakar-if-rules-change
I've decided to open the subject, basically they (Peugeot) say that if the WSMC will ratify change to the regulations for the World Cup for Cross Country Rallies and the Dakar organiser ASO will follow suit in handicapping two-wheel-drive buggy-style vehicles such as Peugeot's 3008 DKR, then Peugeot will leave.
Any thoughts anyone?

FIA- WMSC should be going the other way and giving the cars more wheel travel etc.
Might look cool like this.

if somebody is interested Tatra-Buggyra has nice videos on the youtube, sadly the interviews are only in Czech. You can see for example in the video from 10th leg how to be 2nd in the day with only three wheels on the truck :) Generally kolomý praises the stages a lot. He also said he would have to take insane risk to be in the fight for victory with all the Kamaz crews. Currently he is third overall and the only non-Kamaz driver in the battle. It's his first start in Silk Way.

https://www.youtube.com/user/BUGGYRAbrand/videos

By the way both co-drivers of Kolomý are very experienced co-drivers from classic rallies. You may know Michal Ernst for example from his starts with Prokop or Semerád in WRC. Jiří Stross is normally co-driving Pospíšilík, in the past Dunovský and other Czech drivers.

Loeb drove wihtout brakes since 3rd kilometer. Quite early for technical issues...

Anyway obviously a difficult stage even when it was short. The gaps are huge for 31 km!

And finally the official live timing looks like something usable :)

Why Borgward is using the rebadging Racing Lancer for the BX7 DKR..?

Sent from my A12 using Tapatalk

This article does not sound too happy about Borgward's prospects. Initial street vehicles - foton parts....supposed to be a factory opening in Germany this year.
Dakar entry - Borgward's sold in a few regions around the world - marketing budget probably approved months ago. Dakar rules pretty loose for 'proto-type entries that are not overall contenders'. c.f Haval a few years back.

The Peugeots probably deliberately lost time on this first short stage. This way they start further back on the long second stage which has difficult navigation.

Mirek
7th January 2018, 14:12
As usually great videos from Tatra Buggyra, unfortunately without subtitles but some nice footage inside including nice onboard shots: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjRDT_Cwzpw

Main points: Kolomý praised the stage as absolutely beautiful but small time lost with navigation and one short stop in the sand. Kalina (our co-driving legend, currently in truck with Šoltys) said their truck was stuck when it had to pass another crashed car and truck behind jump (the footage is on the video).

By the way Loprais who won the stage is on his own again this year.

Sébastien Loeb is stuck in the sand for the second time today. The Peugeot driver is not alone, with Cyril Despres, Jakub Przygonski, Carlos Sousa, Giniel De Villiers, Boris Garafulic and Miguel Yacopini stuck just a few metres away!

07:12 Stéphane Peterhansel: 'If you stop, you're stuck for good'
'We didn't have any problems, but it was extremely tricky. These dunes were the most difficult ones since the start of the rally. Seb and Carlos simply got stuck in the sand. Helping them was out of the question because we couldn't get close. If you stop, you're stuck for good!'

SS5 Another tough day... Right after the start of the stage it was a lot of difficult drops from the dunes and one of them surprised me a little bit. We had a big impact and I really hurt my neck on that one. It was so painful after that I just couldn’t drive
Every little bump was hurting so much that I just came out with the first gear in the first part of the dunes. By doing that we got stuck three times. A proper disaster day! Let’s hope that tomorrow will be kinder.

Curious to see if anything is going to happen with Sainz and Peterhansel.
Dutch quad rider Kees Koolen filed a complaint. Sainz hit him and continued. Peterhansel got there after the accident, but also didn't stop. Apparently they have to show up this afternoon to see whether they get a penalty. Also Al-Rajhi seems to be disqualified over this incident, but I can't find what he did or didn't do.

MartijnS
15th January 2018, 19:30
It’s getting big news!
Sainz denied hitting the quad and says Koolen lost control himself.

Tweet of Orlando Terranova saying Koolen (founder of booking.com) has shares in Toyota Overdrive and therefore Sainz shouldn’t be punished.
I guess there have to be onboards? To be continued.

10 minutes penalty for Sainz. So I guess he is guilty but than again, not really a serious penalty... :D

MartijnS
15th January 2018, 21:44
Peugeot is going to appeal the decision. So is Kees Koolen. He's really angry about the fact that Peugeot acts like nothing happened.

15th January 2018, 21:52
The fun thing is that Sainz is saying that he didn't hit Koolen and that neither of the vehicles has any signs of the impact.

MartijnS
15th January 2018, 22:57
Koolen has parts of his quad that are damaged a lot and he is going to let them research later, how much power is needed to get them bend like they are.

Saying things like this just makes the guy sound like a dick

"I'm a businessman and have access to a lot of good lawyers, maybe the best lawyers in the world, better than these organisations have themselves," said Koolen.

Let's hope the multitude of cameras attached to Sainz' car will be able to resolve what really happened. Is there a rule which says the bikes need to yield to the cars?

If Sainz is innocent they should show the images which there obviously are. I’m rooting for the Dutch guy. There is no point in making this up and do not start with the fact that he is supposed to have stocks in Overdrive..

Van Beveren 3 km of stage finish had a huge crash, maybe he will retire due to injuries. There is a video from heli at twitter with his huge crash.

Mirek
16th January 2018, 22:21
Yes, he is out due to spine, thorax and collar bone injuries. It shall not be that serious but he was airlifted to the hospital.

Also Prokop was standing somewhere for more than 1,5 hours.

Mirek
16th January 2018, 23:20
Al Attiyah lost half an hour and Peterhansel is second.

It was electric glitch for Prokop.

A loooot of issues for bikers. Mainly navigation but some big crashes too. For example also Svitko (but he was able to continue).

Federico Villagra keeps going on course to win the truck category at his third participation in this class. Yesterday Nikolaev said he is "not slower than De Rooy", today he says "he is even faster than De Rooy" :D Vyazovich (going third) said that when he tried to follow him on some twisty road, Villagra was going at about 140kmh without lifting the throttle, he made an outright expression "man, he drives so bravely, so fast". Cars category is also interesting this year, I never believed that both Sainz and Attiyah will survive after the marathon day.

And among the bikes race, nice position for Laia Sanz: 12th :D

..at his home city of Cordoba, very sad indeed as it was a technical fault, his truck couldn't move with more than 40kmh. Nikolaev also had drivetrain problems - lost the clutch at the end of the first part and had to change gears with proper throttle pedal work. Genugten got sun-blinded and missed a turn. Macik somehow survived and keeps going in 6th, wonderful result.

Also a great result for Polish driver Jakub Przygonski, who finished 5th overall. That's his best result ever and he was the best Mini driver in Dakar 2018. In front of him - only such Dakar legends like Sainz, al-Attiyah, de Villiers and Peterhansel. Congratulations!!!

Last weekend I visited a Dakar Show on Sosnová autodrom in Czech Republic. The main entries were all in truck category and they made a great show (Macík, Tatra Buggyra, Renault MKR or from the cars Ouředníček etc.). Especially watching those ten tons heavy monsters driftitng around was something special. There were also numerous Tatra and Liaz successful historic trucks.

Very nice video!
