Personally I can't see Ogier backing off due to Tanak and Evans. Certainly not 3 stages in/8secs off the lead.

Probably more inclined to do so at VW when they were paying him the big bucks. But unlike the last 3 years, we actually have a battle for the manufacturers championship this season.

Maybe not back off, just keeping the pressure on Meeke without taking risks.

Great work from Meeke. Others scratching their heads but he remains on or slightly above the pace of Ogier.
Seems like the C3 is not "generally wrong" as some people alarmed just after Sweden. Told you the season is long and diverse.

I really expected more from Sordo this rally. Otherwise it is simillar to what could be expected.

In R5 cars, Sarrazin is doing a great job one more time.
His Hyundai is not at Skoda or Fiesta Evo level, and he is getting back to rallying, and is now the only one close to (a relaxed) Mikkelssen. Pitty about Jan, I think he can be a contender to Andreas here.

Very god.

Also good fight between Nils Soland and Astier in the R2 cars

yeap

David Serieys, Tour de Corse 2017 Director:
“The Plage de Liamone will be the major attraction at the start of the stage. Straight away the drivers will have to tackle a very quick uphill section on the way to Casaligione with its very tight hairpin, which always poses a problem. Then comes a change of pace and profile with a wide, twisty road leading to Pont de Furcina and then a string of quick corners and an uphill climb along a narrow winding bumpy road to the Calcatoggio hairpin. The road is very narrow and twisty so getting the apexes right will be a difficult task.*The crews will cross the villages of Sant’ Andrea d’Orcino and Cannelle along a road that poses another technical challenge and brings them to the Sari d’Orcino hairpin.*The next section is much wider and climbs uphill to Col de Sarzoggio followed by a pretty tricky downhill run to Sarrola-Carcopino, the end of the second stage.”
*Patrick Bernardini, Corsican driver two-time French Rally Champion:
“This special stage, with a distance of thirty kilometers, is less mythical than others but still displays some famous places. This includes particularly the notorious hairpins from Casaglione. At the beginning of the stage, the road is fast and wide, since it has been renovated for the local people. Before, the recces were quite complicated due the narrow roadway. After that, drivers reach a crossroad, the Furcina bridge and then they face the Calcatoggio hairpin. By the way, drivers will have to pay attention in the uphill climb, where there are always some cows on the road. On this part, the road is winding and narrow; it will be hard to cut the corners. Finally, the drivers can count on a fast and bumpy roadway with a lot of changes of pace. Overall, this stage is ideal to run some tests. There was an era where I used to go on these roads to make adjustments on my car. The local people know it by heart – I’ve often taken it to go to Sarrola – but it’s not very well-known by the public.
It’s a nice little stage, which follows a big one (SS1-3). In the nineties, the special stage was almost forty-one-kilometer long and we used to take it into the opposite direction. In 1996, I specifically remember starting at the third place behind Philippe Bugalski and François Delecour. I finished a few meters behind them, taking 1’59’’ over Bugalski and 1’48’’ over Delecour. I was on fire!”

Yes, you are right. Sorry, my mistake for not checking about the Skoda. And regarding competitiveness of Hyundai R5, just because there have been no good results with that car (even with few drivers using it). Paddon showed good speed in San Remo but only won 1 stage vs the Peugeot 28, which has consesnsus not to be the best car. I know Paddon does not have same knowledge as Andreucci, etc.

The most critical issues seem to be solved (overheating, pop-of valve position) but it's still relatively less reliable car although a lot of those issues are probably caused by the simple fact that unlike Škoda or M-Sport PSA sells its cars also as kits. For sure not all cars are assembles on factory level. PSA cars generally seem to be quite good on twisty and smooth asphalt stages but they don't seem to be so competitive on gravel or on rough and very fast asphalts.

Ott Tänak

It's a bit of an empty feeling to finish the day like we did because I was really enjoying the stages. But that's life. Sometime's it tough, but we will fight back!!
We were caught out by some gravel on a long corner and got stuck on a steep bank with no chance of getting back to the stage. It's disappointing as there was basically no damage on the car, but now we need to focus on the positives.

In the past I've always struggled at this event. But this year we had a good test and worked hard on our pacenotes. The hard work seems to have paid off as we were setting good times and matching the 'Tarmac experts'.

We have to be happy with that, and we just needed a little more luck today

Apparently Kris had a problem with a bleeding nose before SS1. He might have drove with it bleeding.

I'm surprised at Neuville's comment about pushing as hard as he can and falling behind. After Monaco and Sweden many of us thought Hyundai had the fastest car. This is a very twisty road and it's torque not top speed that makes the difference. Does that mean Citroen has the best torque out of all the cars while Hyundai best hp? We're going to have to wait for other rallys to confirm that.
So many plot twists this season so far. Love it. WRC hasn't been this interesting in a long time.

Will Meeke be able to stay on the road? That’s the doubt that probably everyone in Corsica is having for tomorrow. Ogier and Neuville seems to be struggling to keep his pace and if the Brit manages to handle the pressure it’ll be hard for them to win this one. Breen is doing another amazing demonstration; steadily faster and a handy Citroen B plan for the podium, in case Meeke eventually decide to try a ditch. Mikkelsen is on his own class in WRC2 and besides Sarrazin one other French is doing fine: Rossel, on a DS3 backed by FFSA. He was already fast on a R3 car last year and has now moved to a R5. On the opposite sense is Solans, actual JWRC leader. He’s returning to 2wd cars after having competed on WRC2.

Btw, no doubt that Corsica’s roads are beautiful and demanding, but this long stages route just sucks!

Actually, Peugeot Academy/Sainteloc cars were directly built by PS and they are amongst the most unreliable 208’s ever. Torque is out of corner, off the line pushing force. I'm sure center diff being looser on Citroens makes them more nimble in the corners and less understeery which on these twisty roads does make a difference. But Hyundais didn't seem as understeery as Toyotas so I'll stick to my assumption of torque being the difference. Especially since on fairly twisty mexican gravel with a totally different center diff setup Meeke was also faster
It must be the torque out of corners that makes the difference.

EDIT: Would be nice to see a video comparison of out of corner speed.

Yes, I remember watching some of those ERC highlights. Both Craig Breen and Kevin Abbring were quite fast in the Peugeot Academy 208s during the first round of stages (especially Abbring), but their cars' abysmal reliability let them down constantly.

It's not a nightmare. Ogier will setlle for second. He's so good at being a consistent point scorer. If you can't win, make sure you are second. It's only a loss of 7 points and Meeke is quite far behind in the points. I bet that M-Sport will ask Ogier to secure 2nd to make sure they collect as many Manufacturer points now that Tänak is out and Evans so far behind in the standings.

I was talking about the title hopes he had not me for him. I believe that Ogier will take the title this year as in previous years his competitors are not robust enough or not consistent enough to challenge him throughout the season. again on the bright side if Craig continues the road he's at he could well challenge for wins next year once he's familiar with all the rallies but again that's just imho.

Meeke and Neuville are now the fastest drivers in the WRC, but Ogier will still cruise to a 5th title. At least we go into rallies now knowing that 3 or 4 drivers can realistically win though

I agree. The championship is balanced in the fight for the victory in each rally, but Ogier has been regular and the championship seems to be controlled and the fifth title seems to be an inivitability.
As for this rally, we will finally see if Neuville has big balls and if he's able to capitalize the good pace and the good fights during the rally with the final victory. If he can, it will be brutal for the championship...4 rallys...4 manufacturers...4 wins for each one.
Who thought this could be possible a few months ago?!
Go Neuville...

So the stage was live on TV but only for a few lads in the service park? I just don't get it, why not to stream it in their masterpiece wrc+ site...
So much drama in this stage, and we only rely on the radio feed...

Sorry but this is just irritating. He has been the same last time he had a drive. Decent times just before or after a crash but totally uneven overall results. This year its exactly the same. I like his personality but he just does not have it.

There was a time when he didn't crash much and when he was able to regularly beat Mikkelsen and Neuville but it all went wrong when he stopped with Škoda and ended with trying to prove himself with single private starts.

Agree... this happens on most rallies, the big screen shows the stage at the SP but not it's shown elsewhere. :(

Cuz SS5 was interrupted and cars after restart of SS5 only now arrive to SS6 TC

Sweden 05 was speculated to be related to his off: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpvG6-vlK1c
I also remember that the Alsace issue was rumored to be partly due to some small error (maybe was more of a conspiracy theory by Ogier), didnt find any vid of that.

1-2 engine issues over 10 years then.

At least he is fast and crashy rather than slow and crashy like some others.

Tommi should at least give him the full season (which he has never had in a World Rally Car) to see whether he can make the grade.

Lefebrve; imo they tried to progress his career too quickly without doing the groundwork. He went from R2 cars in ERC one year to a World Rally Car in WRC the next.. and then of course he had the accident.

also Sweden 2008 engine problems day 2 I think it was after Loeb crashed out in day 1 or was it the same day can't remember. also next event afterwards in Mexico they also had engine issues, but yes overall pretty reliable cars for the Citroen factory, shame it hit Meeke when he could of had back to back wins & first win on tarmac. Let's hope it's the last time they have engine issues for another 6 years ;)
