We have a small group of Kiwis heading to Argentina this year. We are looking at using a mini van and have a local English speaking guide. If anyone is interested in joining our group of rally fans feel free to drop me a message.

Well photos on Twitter appear to show snowy conditions on the El Condor stage right now. So it seems it is possible if this remains.

I think we just need to be careful as it did snow after the rally last year. So some pictures could be from 12 months ago. But certainly some chatter about the colder temps. Snow would be cool - but I don't trust them to let it run in the year 2017. Ice is pretty disastrous.

At the end of april, it is not very likely to have snow there. El Condor stage is up to 2200 m over sealevel. it can be up to 13-14 degrees colder than on the surfaces.. during next weel, I do not see any snow there, just a lot of rain, maybe too much rain!

Exciting! I've been planning to go the rally for the past month and it seems I will be going after all. Is there a way to download the Google Earth maps to Google Maps, or to use GPS with them.

Another question: I suppose I can just drive up to the stages and hike into them to spectate, right?

LAURENT FREGOSI, TECHNICAL DIRECTOR: "Back from the Tour de Corse, we analyzed Kris Meeke's car to identify the cause of his abandonment. It was a connection of the lubrication circuit that broke, so it is not an internal problem to the engine. We have of course studied an alternative solution that was validated during our recent test session. During these five days of testing, we focused on suspensions, which condition much of the performance and confidence of pilots on the ground. Argentina is a difficult terrain, with a loose soil that degrades between the two passages to bring out large stones. Combined with the speeds achieved, the shocks imposed on the chassis and the rolling trains impose severe stresses. "
*
KRIS MEEKE: "I have only good memories in Argentina: a third place in my first participation and my first world victory two years ago! Moreover, this rally is very special at the level of the atmosphere and the infatuation - not to say madness - of the public. As soon as we set foot on Argentinian soil, we feel that people love the sport. Even though I did not take part in the event last year, I have every reason to be confident. Between my victory in Mexico, my start of Tour de Corse and the work done this week in testing, I feel good before this rally. However, I remain aware of the difficulties of this trial, which always brings its share of uncertainty. »

You are talking non sense as always.Do they replace chassis? No they don't.And I can tell you that most cars would be pretty banged up if they are used on rally stages for well over a decade.

On Tuesday 25th April I traveled 12 hours by long distance bus from Mendoza to Cordoba. Final section of trip was from Mina Clavero over El Condor and then thru Villa Carlos Paz. On highest sections of road near El Condor you could see a small amount of snow. I do not think it was recent snow more likely residual amount from snow melt.

it is abnormally cold nowadays in Cordoba mountains.
Temperatures below 0 expected in Mina Clavero and El Condor (arround -5°C), so not snow, but some isolated ice patches in gravel may be found (not such a problem for drivers as gravel keep enought traction and car, yes for spectators staying all night up there!!)

Shakedown stopped. A spectator need medical assistance as a result of a Cardiac decompensation, to 400m of the arrival.

So it's not an accident related to a rally car.

Quick question: does anyone know how early I have to arrive at a stage to drive into it? I'm planning on going to Los Gigantes, Tanti and el Condor and I'd much rather not freeze my ass off by walking 3km into the Sierras.

Don't see any reason for it. He was 5-6 in passes 2-3 with Hyundais being clearly fastest.

Looking on Shakedown times 1st pass often doesn't mean that much cause some drivers just try to check out the stage not risking anything, similarly passes over 3rd are imo very biased by knowing every single corner and taking more daring lines than you would not take in a stage.

"There may not be any objective reason for this, it has often been a very small thing, so I'm not worried about it at all. Previous years, leaving before, I was necessarily not in the best position. We are going again in front of the first day, I hope that the rain will have somewhat reduced the sweeping phenomenon, "Sébastien Ogier pointed out to our microphone.
The world champion also confirms the general impression of the peloton: "The rally is going to be very demanding for the cars, the Shakedown was in a broken state, it was survival, it is not very fun to drive in Such conditions. "
Leader of the current championship, the 33-year-old Frenchman knows music. "I do not think it's a lot of the risk, but I think it's a lot of the lottery," he said. Some specials, I think, will have to lift a little foot in the brittle portions, "he analyzed at the micro of our colleague Olivier Gaspard, special envoy of the RTBF in Argentina.
Before concluding, on the final podium of the Argentine test. "There are a lot of drivers that are fast this season, especially since other parameters are taken into account on this course, I hope to be in any case," he said. Said the Ford driver.

Gilsoul
"The field is very rugged in Argentina, it's actually the most difficult test for the mechanics because the terrain is destroyed, it seems like a little bit in Kenya in places, but the winner of the rally will not necessarily be the The speed of the car, when it is possible, and the car when it is necessary. The body is sometimes touched but it is make-up, it is just for laughter. The vital organs: we must be sure that they will pass through. This is the first year of cars, some parts have been reviewed, "explained Nicolas Gilsoul, co-driver of Thierry Neuville at Hyundai, on the microphone of our colleague Olivier Gaspard, special envoy of the RTBF in Argentina.
The Belgian crew never managed to catch better than fifth place on the Argentinian roads: "We were perhaps lacking a little wisdom and maturity, but we have grown well and we want to reverse this trend. We want to do the best possible operation at the level of the general, without focusing on victory. It's better to be a living chick than a dead hero

Hopefully Citroen have the set up right. If they do Meeke is the fastest man in the wrc, but if it's slighty off Meeke plunges down the time sheets and will have an off trying to push too hard. Seems like there's very little margin for error on the set up of that C3. When they get it right it's blindingly quick, but when it's wrong it becomes undriveable...

Quick question: does anyone know how early I have to arrive at a stage to drive into it? I'm planning on going to Los Gigantes, Tanti and el Condor and I'd much rather not freeze my ass off by walking 3km into the Sierras.

I like how you state that Meeke is fastest as a fact and if not its the setup (or the car). To me he is the most over-hyped out of the top 5, which are close to each other in terms of pure speed (those 5 are in no particular order: Ogier, Neuville, Meek, Latvala, Mikkelsen).
In pure results for Meek: best champ. placement - 5th, number of rallies won - 4 (all of them gravel rallies where he started way down the order on first day). He doesn't shine in terms of stage wins either, even compared to teammates.
Sure he is good, but fastest man in wrc. Cmon....

The production was ok actually, except for the commentary I didn't notice a huge difference to the usual live super specials.

I understand a bit of spanish and knowing the context I could make out a good part of what they were saying. The commentary was geared toward general public and seemed informative. They were saying things like how each driver did in previous rounds or years and who are the favorites, stuff like that.

Here's my take on it!

This is a local TV production from Argentina.

Do they have experience with rally coverage?
Well the amount of high level events that would be broadcast in Argentina is one per year... So no.

Do they specialize in rally coverage like the WRC promoter team?
I doubt that they have only one job per year... So no. They likely cover soccer or other sport events for most of the year.

Do they have the budget?
Soccer is massively more popular, rally, comparatively, not so much... So likely no.

Did anyone anywhere promise the product of a lifetime?
Well... No.

We have been complaining for ages that the local feeds were not being used and that the potential was being wasted.

Now they have done exactly what we asked them to do and what happens?... People complain about that too.

I mean... Really?

It is completely voluntary to watch. It is bonus content, so treat it as such. You don't have to watch it if you don't like.

Rally fans are apparently the hardest people to please in the world if this forum is anything to go by.

Rally is developing as great as expected.
Sordo has done always very good in Argentina, and this year seems to be the case also.
This morning stages may be the only ones with some sweeping effect. I expected that after rain, this effect is minimized or even some advantage for first runners, but seems soem very small sweeping (or just "line reading") is present here.

When the new cars were revealed, I remember getting concerned over the front splitters being so low to the ground, thinking that maybe on rougher rallies they could chip off and cause some aero problems. Both Ogier and Latvala's damage issues suggest my guesses were right.

so rally starting in less than an hour, which m-sport car is the first one to have problems?

SS3: 4 Ford's in the Top 5.. not bad for a car with 'problems'.

SS3 is just one stage. In the overall standings, there's only 3 Fords in the Top 5.

If the trend continues, there will at least be one mechanical failure for M-Sport this weekend.

You're the only one whose saying that. You're bringing yourself down. I think the Fiesta is a great car, and M-Sport is a great team, but no matter how much of a fanboy of a team or driver you are you must be able to accept their weaknesses. The Fiesta is undeniably unreliable.

First time I see results today.

Very surprised by Evans, even considering the starting order. DMACK factor? As mentioned he has never been epic on gravel.

Disaster for Hyundai. If Neuville looses more time now with the damper they have 3 car out of top 3 chance (most likely) after just 3 stages. Even though the car is considered fastest. Maybe too weak for rough gravel?

Of course I'm aware of their problems, but those of the other teams are just glossed over and M-Sport's highlighted.

Dmack has made a super tyre, im not saying Evans is slow guy but he definitely isnt TOP5 gravel driver in my eyes, he was horrible in 2015. Although he has a good record on harder rallies like mexico and argentina.

Just stop trying to justify Tanak.....
