Am surprised it took this long for Juan to be on probation. Its another example of NASCAR's censorship gone mad - who cares if he gives another driver a one-fingered salute, it all adds to the show.

The Janet Jackson and Don Imus incidents have made people jumpy about what goes across the air-waves.

Thw worst part is that he did it as a joke because he thought it was the film crew that has been following him around all season, but it turned out instead to Speed Channel and they were live at the time.

Anyway it was a dumbass move on Juan's part ...
$10,000 is pocket change to someone who has already earned at least $500,000 this year so far ...
8 races in & 28 more to go, Juan should net at least $2.5 milllion for his 1st year in Nextel Cup ...
not bad for a rookie finishing in the top 20 ... http://www.motorsportforum.com/forums/images/icons/tongue-anim.gif

I´ve pretty much been absent from motorsports this year. Too busy.. But Monty just follows me!! I was going through some quotes at bloomberg.com and suddenly, first page headlines "Montoya gets a 10.000 USD fine for......" I went, boy, this Monty guy really is world known character. They even talk about him in bloomberg.com...

I can think of two separate occasions when Earnhardt did the same thing during a race and both races were less than 12 months apart.

Montoya has already earned $1,2 Millions this season, in NEXTEL Cup, at least. If he's going to earn just 2,5 million, as someone suggest, then he should better go back to f1, any second rate team can improve that.
Mears made more than 7 millions last years, and he was 14th. Add to that a juicy check from Chip.
This year the goal is to be in the chase...

Right, so why wasn't Stewart punished in March, for doing it in anger during a race, and being caught on live TV doing so?? Because they apparently 'didn't see it'. Jimmie Johnson saw it, while going round the track at over 100mph, but they supposedly missed it.
Yeah, right.

What you don't realize is that the "prize money" is split.
According to nascar.com, in 2006, driving for Ganassi, Casey Mears earned $5,413,340
I expect he got around half of it ...
that makes around a $2.7 million payday, not bad for 14th in points.
nascar.com shows Montoya as earning $1,167,360 after race 8.
using the above figure, dividing by 8 & multiplying by 36, you come up with a little over $5.25 million ...
I expect he gets around half of it ... (that is the common split but varies by contract)
using half as a guideline Montoya would pocket around $2.6+ million ...
if he can make more money elsewhere & he is unhappy, he is welcome to leave NASCAR ! http://www.motorsportforum.com/forums/images/icons/tongue-anim.gif

:D Your calculations are correct... but...
JPM probably would have made much more than 2.6 million remaining in Formula 1.
;) I suspect Chip (with NA$CAR's help) is paying him much more than that in salary.
JPM in NA$CAR opens up the Latin American market... both with additional fans & Sponsorship.
:dozey: Oh... and Don't expect JPM to miss any races this year... even if he violates probation!!! :p :

I doubt that NASCAR is helping the Chipster out, otherwise they'd be helping out their Number One pitch man (I wanted to say what Imus said, but FCC rules prohibit me)...Mikey Waltrip.
But I'm sure Havoline and the many other associate sponsors are contributing to JPM's wealth. Jeff Gordon & Joonyer make alot of their money doing commercials.

I also doubt that Ganassi is adding any more than the contract demands.
Ganassi doesn't spend money that he doesn't have to.

Montoya could make much more than 2,5 millions even in DTM. Anyway, we didn´t even get to know how much did Ganassi pay him in CART. In Williams he had a lousy contract of 3-4 millions per year and Montoya complained about how much Chip paid to him in America. I guess that NASCAR sponsors have deeper pockets than the CART ones.

DD...A, After what Tony's been through they would want his hyde if he flipped off someone now. There's a lot less tolerance for Stewart now than there used to be. Heck look at all the agressive driving/accidents that Dale Sr. caused years ago that everyone thought was great at the time. It's a different world out there now. You can't even call someone a knappy headed ho without being punished now.
IndianChiefJoy
29th April 2007, 06:24
Well, maybe Mika was a bigger name than Montoya in 2001, but now, I don't think so. Anyway, Mika didn't have the impact you would expect from a former world champion, There were faster guys than him in German Touring, maybe that's why he's just getting this magre salary. Anyway, if he's not happy with his earnings, he should better hire Willy Weber as manager, and get a ton of money for his work. Just look at Michael and Ralf Schumacher.
And, Apparently, Montoya turned down a DTM team offer, for going back to U.S. (and it was more than 2,5 millions).

And I posted a link, showing that Tony did flip someone off in anger, and they 'failed to see it'. In March this year. Even though Jimmie saw it while racing at over 100mph. :D It was caught on live TV, and he apparently did it last year too.

Montoya's the new kid on the block and NASCAR just wants to make sure he doesn't get too cocky that's all. Besides what in life have you ever seen that is fair and un biased? I'm not saying it's right(that's the first conclusion you will jump to)but that's the way it is and we all have to live with it. It's water over the dam now. Scream all you want but your guy Juan is still on probation till next year.

give your head a shake man... it's not NASCAR, it's the nature of our society. the nfl won't let a player celebrate a touchdown in a creative manner. urlacher got fined for wearing a hat unapproved by the NFL at the superbowl, and a larger fine than any NASCAR has administered (save for one!)
Lee Roy
30th April 2007, 18:25
I think it has more to do with the reaction by the government and national popular opinion on the Janet Jackson incident during the superbowl half-time, exacerbated by the recent Imus incident.
NASCAR is trying to protect the nice broadcasters who are paying them hundreds of millions of dollars.
DonnieDarco
30th April 2007, 20:08
R Mears. NASCAR do not have the right to 'punish people before they get too cocky', so thats just ridiculous.
They for sure can have this rule about gestures, but they have to apply it TO ALL. And they haven't. I have no beef with Stewart on this matter at all, but if Jimmie Johnson is able to spot Stewart flipping off in anger while racing, and the gesture was caught on live TV, then there is absolutely no excuse at all for Stewart getting away with it.
This is a failing on the part of Nascar officials and its not acceptable.
So yes, I'll 'scream'. I happen to prefer fair play.
