Hello,

I am a new member here. I know it's a little early to discuss about Portugal yet, but I have already a few questions for this rally.

We went last year to rally Portugal, but we only saw 4 stages in the whole weekend.

Can some of the Portuguese guys here on the forum give me some tips, so that we can see more stages during the weekend?

Where can I find good maps?

Thanks for your answer.

Same stages and layout of last year. Only added a street stage in Porto and 2x Vieira do Minho in Sunday

It's easy to see at least 8 ss's over the rally. The stages scheme is: 1 super ss on Thursday; 3 stages running twice on Friday plus the new Porto street ss; 3x2 again on Saturday and 2x2 on Sunday.

For those coming only for the weekend it deserves trying to get at Porto on Friday's evening (19.00h local) because this super ss right at the city heart is going to be be amazing! The only problem will probably be the bar parties following this street stage...it'll be hard to get into Sat morning stages! Lots of cheap hostels and bnb rentals. Metro direct from Airport.

The magnificent scenery for Friday street stage:

Thanks for the compliment! It's great to see tourists discovering and enjoying Porto (and Portugal)! To you and all the others that cannot be here during WRC there's always our public TV (RTP), that uses to make live special stages broadcast. Porto will be one of them, for sure.

My tip it’s not about any particular hotel but on the best location to stay, having Rallye de Portugal in mind.

Matosinhos (Porto’s north neighborhood) is close to RP headquarters (Exponor) and has a fast direct Metro connection with Porto downtown (called Baixa), useful for Friday evening street stages. Also, it can be easier to enter into the highways towards the north and east countryside SS’s from Matosinhos than from Baixa. Matosinhos center looks to be the perfect base for the RP weekend but (there’s always one!) there’re few Hotels there and they should be all booked by now (if you try you should take a look into Google Earth to see the ones that are close to Metro stations).

For those who want to be in Porto’s downtown and profit rally days to discover the city, the hotel range it’s huge, from cheap local guest houses and hostels to expensive 5 star international hotels. You can even get to see the super SS from some hotels balconies (the photo above was certainly taken from the InterContinental, but there’re others located at Avenida dos Aliados boulevard). The only (small) problem is to get into Friday’s Porto SS area, because huge traffic is expected and surely we’ll have to leave the car outside the center limits (taking the Metro at…Matosinhos!).

Finally, there’s a third option to those that doesn’t want to get into Porto (limited) confusion and stay closer to the real SS’s. Viana do Castelo it’s the best choice to be before first leg SS’s. For second leg Amarante looks to be the better one and for the final day Guimarães or Braga are the ones to choose. Each one of these smaller cities is only 50 to 70kms away from Porto and all have reasonable hotel choices.

Btw, all SS’s, even Porto’s one, are free (more money left for wine and beer…) but we’re supposed to stand only on spectators areas (called ZE’s). Last year there were plenty of them in all SS’s, and some more may be announced soon.

I've got a friend that has two apartments for daily renting on Oporto downtown. They are close to Aliados (600 m from the house to the city center). They're very nice and cheap. Contacts by pm if you want.

In another news, we can make a meet up for forumers on Friday night on downtown Oporto as well. A nice rally stage followed by a nice pint of the awesome Oporto's very own Super Bock beer :)! Perfect day in the makig ahahaha

What was the situation with marshals and police like last year? I know it's not like in Monte Carlo, but was it very strict?
I remember Portugal to be very strict in 2007 and it was impossible to walk on the stage even an hour before the start.

still the same... I always end up spectating one stage per day in the same spot

Rally Power
28th January 2016, 03:46
Yep, things still strict on spectator’s moves, but there’s no need to stay at the same spot every day if you choose the right ZE’s (spectators zone) on the SS’s. You can jump from one to another between the loops, if that doesn’t mean crossing the SS road.

This year SS’s are the same as last year but it seems there’ll be some new ZE’s. The videos about them must be released soon (the link to last year videos is missing). All ZE’s are free and last year some were really nice and got easy accesses.

You have this campsite near the Vieira do Minho stage (~3,5 km from the start). http://en.camping.info/portugal/porto-e-norte-de-portugal/parque-de-campismo-da-cabreira-16294
Near you have 3 nice spectators zones, one of them with more than 1km of stage allowed for public. But you always can do as everyone and camp in the spectators zones, at the stages.

RG2 won’t take long. Meanwhile you can have an idea of the spectator’s areas (ZE) from last year official videos. Probably they’ll add more ZE’s this year. Take a look on ZE14/15 (close to each other), 24 and 28. Rally pass can be useful to park closer to the stages and get access to some restricted areas, but it’s expensive and there’s no real guarantee you’ll end watching more SS’s with it.

No way he will stay. I think both parts made mistakes and both of them need to get rid of each other. I think Neuville will go to Citroen next year. It will be an interesting lineup with Meeke and Breen/Lefebvre in the third car.

And if everything goes wrong for some reasons he has also the option Toyota, that can pay him more than the other two.

Only thing is I seriously doubt that Neuville would choose Toyota even for good money as he probably doesn`t want to go to a "new" team again. He needs a team who can be sure to provide a competitive car, and only open options if VW driver line up remains is Citroen and Ford, and in that order

near everyone also thinking that "order" of all makes remains same next year, even that cars will be completely new (new chassis for VW and Citroen)

Last year, we found some access to avoid public areas, particularly in Viana, Marao and Ponte de Lima. There was no marshalls here, and we had no problems. And we're not the only ones.

If you want to take pleasure in Portugal, I encourage you to do the same and escape the public areas.

Hi!

All the stages are free. You can check it here: http://uk.rallydeportugal.pt/contentlist.aspx?menuid=249
You can find 36 Spectator Areas (ZE). They are all free.
The 199 euros you're talking about is for "rally pass" (it allows acess for a area with countertops every day, parking, acess to the park...)
The SSS1 is only stage that you need to buy a 20 euros ticket to watch.

After reading the Thierry Neuville interview in the Rally Argentina thread posted by Dimviii it looks to me that Neuville has painted himself into a corner for this event.
As he stated he will be free of “manufacturer” responsibilities and will be able to go for a result.
Because of his current position in the championship he is going to have a very favourable start order for the first two day of the event, possible all days of the event.
Following Argentina he knows how strong and fast the car is. Paddon and to a slightly lesser extent Sordo proved that.
In short he can go for it, maximum attack, only his own personal result is what matters.
He has talked the talk, now he must walk the walk.
If he wins, well that is what is expected because of the reasons stated above.
If he bins it then he has exceeded his talent
There can be no excuses, he has to be like a light switch, either it is on or it is off, there can be no maybes in his performance.

it'll be interesting for a change he is released of some responsibility, but I don't hold my breath for it tbh.

He was out of team responsibilites in Wales and it didn't end well. Lost wheel and then spectacular roll. Of course now the car is better, but I suspect crash.

The whole collecting manufacturer points "pressure" is just a smokescreen and an excuse. We've all said before that being fast and collecting points for your team is all part of being a professional driver.

This season it should not be a factor in the slightest. It's completely irrelevant who is scoring points on what rallies as the championship is effectively set this year. Hyundai can't beat VW and they aren't under pressure from M-Sport behind.

I can't criticise Thierry for when his car has mechanical issues. But when he has a healthy car we just aren't seeing the stage times. It feels from a quick scan this year that he's averaging out at about sixth fastest.

I also hope Tanak will be closer to the top 3 times. Nice effort by Dmack, realy hope they can improve a lot.
Also hope Neuville can do a decent job here, podium could be a mental boost.
Meeke will be fast here to i guess.

19 WRC's is cool, eventhough not al of them will be driven properly.

Any tips on wich ZE's are best to visit? Is it possible to go and see the stage in some other (non ZE) places?

Indeed, the pressure argument is imo only valid for young drivers when they are put in the spotlight and could be distracted by things like media attention. So there it makes sense to have them in the third car where they are not so followed as the two "main" drivers. Otherwise it's bs, in reality what they mean is: "We care about the manufacturers standiungs so we're putting the two drivers who actually finish rallies in the points scoring cars."

I'm disappointed that Thierry hasn't developed into a challenger. He was showing promise that he could, at least partially bother Ogier. The sport desperately needs at least more potential rally winners if not title contenders.

Among the teams / riders who requested the organization of the Vodafone Rally de Portugal your application only for the recognition of this issue, figure, although not officially, Toyota. As is known, the Japanese manufacturer will return to rallying in 2017 and the team, as designated by Toyota Gazoo Racing, whose structure was delivered to the Finnish Tommi Makinen (winner of two editions of Rally of Portugal), has been conducting tests development of the new Yaris WRC.

Juho Hanninen, current test driver for Toyota and already admitted by Makinen as a possible starter in training that will line up three Yaris WRC next season, was entered by Tommi Makinen Racing to the recognition of this edition of the Rally of Portugal. In the same list of riders who will collect "notes" in the classifications without, however, align the test comes another Finn, the young Esapekka Lappi (25 years), former driver of Skoda and European champion 2014 which is touted as the future strengthening of the Japanese builder.

I guess that's normal. He's still under contract to Skoda so it's not like he can start wearing Toyota gear. Like Rally Power said though it's probably EVEN paying for the reece. But you simply would not be doing that if you didn't expect to be coming back there next year. In terms of WRC2, skipping Portugal isn't such a dumb idea given the large amount of entries. Of course if you can smoke everyone in a packed field then that's also good. Depends how you want to play it.

However I dont expect Bergkvist showing exceptional speed more than on occasional stages. More important for him is to show consistency, not without quality speed of course. And it´s to early to compare him to Sunninen regarding time behind wheel on R5.

Still it´s interesting to se how they manages the higher pressure.

Rally Argentina winner Hayden Paddon says he relishes the chance to take World Rally champion Sebastien Ogier on in a straight fight at this week's Rally of Portugal.

The Hyundai driver bagged his first WRC win from a preferential place on the road in South America last month, but this week he runs second on Friday and Saturday - directly behind the dominant, championship-leading Frenchman.

Paddon said running further up the order held no fears for him.

"I really enjoy being first on the road," he said.

"Yes, you are sweeping the gravel, but at the same time you are controlling things and you get to drive to the line that you want to drive, rather than having that line dictated by who has gone and swept the road before.

"I don't have a problem with being further up on the road.

"It's a challenge, but it's a good challenge: if you're there it means you're doing something right, it means you've scored a lot of points in the championship - that can't be a bad thing!"

Paddon and Ogier clashed over the current running order regulations in Argentina, with the world champion hoping to garner support for what he feels would be a more level playing field next season.

DAVID EVANS: Why an explosive Ogier is good for the WRC

He got no support from Paddon and the Kiwi's feelings remain the same.

"Obviously, I have a lot of respect for Seb as a driver - he's the ultimate benchmark," said Paddon.

"But he's also a human being and we're all the same: no better and no worse.

"I stand up for what I believe in and I always will, I'm not prepared to just follow if I don't agree and feel strongly about something.

We're not all going to have the same opinion."

Paddon added that the psychological side of the contest was an important part of the battle.

"I enjoy the mind games side of things, but that's all put to one side when the helmet comes on - then we're focused on just one thing," he said.

"The objective is to challenge for the podium. We still have some work to do, we know that.

"The short-term goal is to be as close to Sebastien as possible and is reasonable given the position on the road.

"We're looking to challenge, this is the position we want to be in."

Lappi did recce with Skoda clothes...

There is still 7 european WRC-events left after Portugal and he can only drive 6 more for points, so he must skip atleast 1 more!

Dont be afraid. All three factory drivers of Skoda has plans to do 7 WRC2 events. So his absence in the rally field in Portugal is expected.

Is it even possible for a 'team' (as in team instead of manufacturer) to score points with 2 cars? I believe he didn't score tean points on his outings last year.

Yes I think so, last time a WRC Team used two cars for points was in 2013 with Qatar WRT, Neuville doing all the rounds and Nasser scoring in four events (and Juho in Monte).

There were several times Tanak hinted about having to "survive" the gravel rounds until Portugal where they will have the "new" tyres. From what I understood, they tested a lot of variants of tyres in order to have a good gravel version for Portugal. So it's something to look out for on this rally and compare Tanak's pace with previous rallies.

Not just for Portugal but for all rallies. I wrote about it in Dmacks topic. But we will see tomorrow, times were very good today.

The Hyundai seems to be very good car at the moment. Usually VW had 1-2-3 on street stages but hasn't been the case in last two rallies. I think this is gonna be hard rally for Paddon, big expectations for him

I hope Dmack has some very good tires for this weekend (if we judge by Tänaks "poker face" it is going to be interesting.)

Regarding Paddon:
The original plan was to do A LOT of work towards Portugal, especially since the stages are the same which makes it easier to compare, but everything went a bit crazy after the victory - with him even meeting the prime minister - so the time we had planned to use for preperations was taken up by PR assignments etc. The same went for Rally Whangarei which we were going to use as preperation for Portugal, but you cant really complain about these things when the cause is Hayden Paddons and New Zealands first WRC victory.
Regarding Hayden in Portugal the aim is to continue to improve. He lost a lot of time on almost every stage here last year, but a lot has happened since then, and it will be interesting to see how the general work on the "base line" will affect his performance.
Hayden is an amazing driver in many respects, and his ability to take theoretical information and turn it in to changes in practice is amazing, so tough the preparations towards Portugal has been "hampered by success", it will be very interesting to see what kind of progress he will make compared to last year.

I think and hope this rally will be very interesting, with several drivers charging for victory. Regarding Argentina I am off course biased, but I think every rally fan loved that it was a duell all the way to the end, so lets hope that Ogier will have his work cut out on this event too! :)

It will certainly be interesting to see what happens. I've followed your posts on this forums and I think you have the right idea regarding driver development. About Paddon I also have a good opinion, but in the end I still think Ogier is better still, I think at the moment he is faster than Paddon, but that could change.

Also I want to mention my username is derived from my own name not Ogier or Loeb. I used to be a McRae then Solberg fan but over time then have grown to appreciate and support Loeb.

It was not part of the "program" to get up to second in the championship this quick. But when he is there, its off course essential to learn as much as possible from it. When you are starting to reach the top, you are going to face challenges as sweeping the road etc, and you need to see this as opportunities to learn, rather than a hindrance towards achieving the optimum result. Both sweeping experience and also being able to see Ogiers lines is off course something that should be put to the best use possible.
Unless something really special happens Hayden is not going to challenge for the world title this year, so then its off course important to use every rally and every experience as a tool to learn for the future - for when it really is going to count.
I think - and that is in many sports - that already at a very young age athletes are to focused on results compared to learning, and this hampers progression. Winning a national championship at 19 doesn't matter, its winning the World Championship at 30, so to speak. And to do that, its a lot of things you have to prepare for. Sweeping the road definitely a part of that.
And in regards to Haydens potential, he is the type of driver that can develop to be able to fight for the win on every stage of every rally. He has just impressed me immensely. I can for obvious reasons not say exactly what we have done, but the speed he can make progression is just incredible, and so far (we haven't settled for the future yet, so we will see what happens) I have had to adjust my "plan" many times, because things have just speed up all the time.
I had some parameters on feedback before Argentina, and when he exceeded them, and also set a very good time on the shakedown, which was a really technical stage (remember, Hayden is the guy who didn't like technical stages at all), I had to reprogram for a possible fight for the victory. This ment a lot of mental adjustments on my own part, and it has been that way from the start. He has great potential, and is definitely a VERY strong candidate to take away the throne from the French Sebastiens :)

Yeah, Paddon is interesting driver and we follow his progress with interest. For sure he shouldn't aim the title this year and focus on improvements as You say. I just hope he won't "spin his head" with the victory in Argentina and stays humble and determined professional as he seem to be so far. Probably he shouldn't "attack" Ogier "out of the track" though. Every driver has his opinion, and what are the results is that matters. I like the ones who are doing "their" job, besides what others are doing and saying.

With regards to Paddon sweeping - its probably worth remembering that he's had his fair share of time running first on the road in NZRC, while that obviously isn't the same level of competition as WRC it's not like the road position is a new thing for him.

In Haydens pre event comments he said the sandy stages are very soft after the rain and would probably cut up and become rough. So it might favour the earlier cars on the road, I guess we will see.
