Monaco baby!

The cars will be on track in less than 48 hours (Thursday practice in Monaco of course) so it must be time for a race thread... will Rosberg manage to stay out of the escape roads in qualy this year? Will Maldonado make it as far as the start of the race? Will Marussia (or maybe even McLaren) score a point?

Thursday 21 May
Free practice 1 starts: BST 9:00 AM, local (CEST) 10:00 AM
Free practice 2 starts: BST 1:00 PM, local (CEST) 2:00 PM

My prediction about Monaco is that someone will use Rosberg and cheat in the same reply in this thread... of course my prediction works against the prediction itself but I'm making it anyway :p. I've always liked this track, mostly because of the onboard footage. The race is usually dull but the onboard cameras really show how extreme the driving is on this track. It's remarkable how they can go lap after lap so close to the barriers and not crash.

Well, it's hard to separate the two considering what he did last year, however, I do hope Hammy gets to make amends for what happened last year. It's not the end of the world, of course, as he'll beat Rosberg over the rest of the season anyway but as Hammy will be first out this time I suspect it should be okay.

I think Hamilton will be gunning for it this year so I'm going to go for him. I wouldn't mind seeing another unsuspecting team win it, like FI.

Hamilton for Pole and win. Another Mercedes one two is the most likely scenario with Vettel or Raikkonen third. It would be nice to see Manor and McLaren get some points as well.

I remember Kimis qualification 2005, everyone tought that Alonso got pole but Kimi thrunched all.

Kimi will win this year! I hope.

You have just used "Rosberg" and "cheat", so that was a self-fulfilling prophecy. :)

I would love to see Kimi win this race. Would be really good for F1. :)

I reckon Macca might get a point.

Prob McDud's best chance for a point or three. The chassis is apparently quite good, the drivers are both capable and engine power is not as important as in other races. They will need to qualify well as if Fred and JB are 15th and 16th etc after quali it will be down to others mistakes rather than their ability.

Since his return a few years ago, he hasn't done particularly well at Monaco/Singapore.
Here is how his quali compares to his teammates

2012 Monaco +0.56 to teammate
2013 Monaco -2.6s but it was wet/drying so I assume Grosjean made a mistake in Q2
2014 Monaco +0.703 to teammate
2012 Singapore +0.732 (Q2 comparison because Kimi didn't make Q3)
2013 Singapore +0.701 (ditto)
2014 Singapore +0.263
some quite large gaps there

Thrunching - Even if you have no idea, leave him alone. He knows what he's doing... whatever the hell thrunching is.

Despite the engine power issue being valid, it appears this year that Mere, and to a lesser extent Ferrari have both the most powerful and the most driveable engines, which makes me think this weekend will not be the magic button for the Renault and Honda boys

I have read that there is a preseason agreement from Mercedes between HAM and ROS about the order in which the drivers will go into Q3. Apparently, HAM has first choice and first is not necessarily the best option.....

The streets of Monaco are quit narrow at places, wonder how many drivers will finish.

Best chance for McDud (anfield hah!) to score a point...if they can make it to qually 2 or 3 - that's a big IF though.

I predict a boring race (but what I want is rain - we haven't had rain at Monaco recently have we??? and some weird grid positions, Kimi to win and Alonso to get a point.)

Tazio
20th May 2015, 09:40
Another cake-walk for Mercedes most likely. The drivability of the car is at times discounted because of its power advantage. However, if we have rain for quali, and or quali and the race, all bets are off. :)

Hammy signs new 3 year deal with Mercedes keeping him there until 2018 - would be a great way to start it by winning Monaco. Reportedly he will earn approx £100 million over 3 years. Not bad for the boy from Stevenage.

At least regarding the Maccas, I'm not sure that rain would be beneficial for them. Not just because Button set one of the best times in Barcelona's third sector on a dry track, but also because the car seems to be a handful to drive and rain would probably compound their misery.

Only just got around to watching the practice sessions from Thursday.

They were dull.

Disappointed to see the exit of the swimming pool made even easier. Is there any point? Monaco's challenge is waining.

They should put back all barrier removed over the last 15 years IMO. Not that it will happen.

When it rains for Macca, it pours - Button's last lap got ruined due to Rosberg's yellow flag. I wonder whether Nico was practicing for Q3? :)

Alonso has just said on Spanish TV that he thought sixth or seven were feasible today.

i think it might be the same overcast conditions. which suits me fine.

It was a good day

more importantly who will break through that Hamilton Rosberg Vettel top 3 lockout?

kimi did it once in malaysia, but pretty much every press conference post qualy and post race are these 3 guys

Also. I think mclaren are in an upwards trajectory. I didn't think they would do anything in 2015, but at this rate they should be in Q3 in Canada

Hey Dawgs............................. Monte Carlo baby

Until about 5 years ago it was a fun race even if it was hard to get past. In the last 5 years we have seen tyre and fuel saving coming to the fore and thus cars and drivers don't push. That makes it dull.

This is a test of our patience these days sadly. Used to be a hard wearing challenge and tough race.

Not so much these days.

Personally I hope for a crazy race. :)

Question while the race goes on.

Why do less cars go into the walls these days?

1. Cause some walls have been moved?
2. Better standard of drivers than in the past?
3. Or are the cars easier to drive than in the past?

Koz
24th May 2015, 15:14

Why, has anything at all happened after lap 1? :-/

steveaki13
24th May 2015, 15:32
Not quite sure why, but in the past even without overtaking, you often had cars weaving around under rear wing of the car in front battling. Now the just sit 2 seconds behind.

Plus no one goes in the walls which lets be honest. around Monaco is key. Cause you end up with action and different point scorers.

They're probably trying to save the tyres from overheating and keeping a relatively low pace, so there's no need to push. If you push, you get too close to the car in front and cook your tyres.

So who on the pitwall made that Lewis decision. Was it Sam Michael or something? Wonder how Toto feels about this? Will someone be sacked? In 2010 here, a McLaren mechanic was sacked iirc for leaving something in Jenson's radiators, causing him to retire.

log it under "seemed like a brilliant idea, at the time..." The grist in the mill was at how long the Safety car was on the track. As it was out there, the laps that 'advantage' was meant for were slipping away, to the point where it was moot.

Blame the strategists in the pit for that mistake.

This is nothing like an engine expiring. This is complete and total incompetence. From everything I've read thus far, Hamilton has handled himself with complete professionalism. Unless I hear that he threw something or bitch slapped someone in the debrief, as far as I'm concerned, he is a man who doesn't snap under a completely wrong circumstance.

Just pointing out that I wrote this before the podium ceremony, in reference to his stopping the car on track, driving dead slow in the cooldown lap, knocking down the 3rd place sign or walking away from the podium and being asked by the FIA chief press officer, or whatever his title is, to come back. That's what I found childish about his behaviour. He had all the right to be upset, but this was just throwing his toys out of the pram.

That said, I think that the way he kept his composure in the podium was commendable. I also find that Brundle asking him how bad he felt was pretty low and that Martin should feel embarrassed; but Lewis gave a very nice reply.

It's something people say to me a lot - usually if I were to ever to show the slightest dissatisfaction with anything, no matter how serious. It seems to mean stop being a weak child and grow up and act like a man!

With me and with Lewis, it seems that some people have very high standards for maturity. I only hope they apply those standards to themselves as well.

Slowing down to collect himself is pretty understandable given the circumstances. He was probably livid given what had happened. I'd probably have done the same thing myself. He's experienced enough to know that he needs to not say things in the heat of the moment that he might regret. I think he hit the 3rd place sign, don't think it was knocked - no big deal. You're just picking on nothing.

If that was all he did, I think he handled having his race victory gifted to Rosberg about as well as any man could. I thought maybe he did the "Danica Stomp" down the pitlane or kicked Toto Wolff in the groin or tried to yank off Niki Lauda's remaining ear... something like that. But Pastor Maldonado, on cold, worn out rain tires, with Sam Michael as his race engineer, could have won that race under the same circumstance in that closing stage. So if that's all he did, good on him.

I've been watching racing since the 1970's. And I'm searching my memory bank to see if I can recall anything even close to what I just witnessed. I wonder who is updating his resume at Mercedes AMG right now though.

The way I see it, if Lewis didn't knock any of the Mercedes team on their butts after that, he handled himself well. That was nothing but sheer incompetence with an added dose of stupidity. Agreed. It would have been nice if Rosberg had not celebrated out of respect for Lewis, but it's hard to imagine that anyone would be complaining had he inherited the race win due to a reliability issue on Lewis' car. At the end of the day, both are things outside of either driver's control. Rosberg lucked into the win, all right, but he won and did what winners do - celebrate.

I just searched out some of the after race conference. Though I obviously can't see the body language, reading the interview it seems to me that everyone on the podium handled the situation very well. And I wasn't suggesting the chaos of the Austria incident, just hoping that Nico should do what it appears he did, by admitting his luck and the misfortune for Lewis being the real deciding factor.

I am not sure if this video shows anything new. The clip was played ad nauseam over and over on TV during the yellow flag.

Also, I don't see any RoGros movements to the right. It seems like he was going to take a usual race line through the corner. When the contact happened he was certainly moving to the left. Some people place the blame on RoGro for braking early, but to me diving like that looked like an act of desperation by Verstappen who is feeling pressure to perform from within the team. Kvyat was all jolted in the race too. I suspect Red Bull's Dr Helmut Marko had a "motivational" conversation with both of them before Monaco.

Also, I don't see any RoGros movements to the right. It seems like he was going to take a usual race line through the corner. It appears that Rogro did feign to the right a little, but I'm not sure that that just isn't the way he normally sets up that corner, and even if it isn't there is nowhere to go on the right except to cut the chicane.
In this sense I agree with you [kfz'] that Rogro did deceive the kid, and made what could be construed as a "welcome to the big leagues" statement, although we cant know that for sure. At any rate I don't see anything there that contravenes the rules as you are allowed one covering move (although there really wasn't anything to cover on his right) before you get back on your normal racing line through the corner. According to Allan Permane the stewards acknowledged that the decision was made on the basis of data presented to them that RG got on the brakes 5 meters later than he did the lap before, and Max's contention from the beginning was that RG did brake earlier, which the data apparently doesn't support.
I think Max should just chalk this one up to experience, and get on with it, which really is all he can do.

I suspect Red Bull's Dr Helmut Marko had a "motivational" conversation with both of them before Monaco. I can't extrapolate things out that far, but I'm not saying it is outside the realm of possibility. However when you're racing the car you own up to your actions, which may or may not be what Max believes he has done.
Tough call this one!

I agree on this given the new information provided by the Stewards. Initially when I viewed the video it looked as though Grosjean had sold Max a dummy and braked earlier than usual. If the data indeed does show that Grosjean braked 5 metres later than the previous lap where Max was also up his gearbox then only Max is to blame. I'm a fan of Grosjean and Max but, from looking at the video, it looks differently. I'd love to see the onboard of the previous lap from Max and see what it looks like to compare.

Remember Singapore 2011 I think it was where Schumacher did something similar, a seasoned veteran, because he had forgotten to keep his tires warm during a safety car period. I still think it unfair for people like Massa, a guy whom himself has made massive blunders over the years, to come hitting out at Max for one incident. If it had happened in his first race then, for sure, there would be concern but he has proven himself to be more than capable of mixing it with the big boys over the opening 6 races as has Carlos Sainz.

even though i did blame grosjean for the incident as well and maybe a a bit more than max, i also think that it would have been hard for verstappen to make that corner. i have just watched it again and he was coming in there at some speed. So perhaps i'm being swayed back towards blaming max more.

Nice well reasoned post TBK. As for the part I have emboldened; I'm not one for taking or discounting others opinions. Felipe is entitled to his, and people should take it for whatever they think it is worth. You didn't see Hamilton cost Mclaren/MB a win in Canada in 08?

Massive brain fart there, or maybe lack of brain fart? Hamilton's brain wasn't working then.

words fail me at the stupidity of mercedes

Well. I suppose they've only funded his whole career. Provided awesome engines and cars to participate and win in F1.

Remember. MB can win F1 races and titles without Hamilton. Hamilton ca't win without MB.

and look at rosberg celebrating like he earned it SMH
Geez. Even I can taste the bitterness of that lemon!

lol

this is really tough to swallow
just like china 2007
What happened then?

Nope. Thats a very dated reference to a UK TV show from the 70s

So you disagree with my opinion that it was amusing?

If you have to go back 7 years to find Hamilton's last brain fart then he's doing pretty well given that for most drivers it's an annual thing or, as is the case with Maldonado - weekly.

"there is no terrible way of winning, there is only winning..."

Welll... Except when you cheat. But Rosberg didn't cheat. He lucked in a fair way! No complaints from me. At least championship is more exciting, and I like that, even if it is "artificial" like some claim.:) But Irvine challenging Häkkinen in 1999 was also "artificial". Or Kubica challenging in 2008. I don't care!

Oh no. I can find numerous lapses fo concentration or general clumsiness. But that's human nature. What happened at Canada 7 years ago? You never forget that. Just like you'll never forget what happened a couple of weeks ago.

Never ever!

That is true but anyone could argue that the same could be said of nearly all WDC winning drivers if they weren't given a dominant car, unless F1 becomes a one make championship that argument will never go away... and despite some bad luck and dodgy strategy decisions he is still beating his team mate consistantly and leads the WDC.

You come across as a Lewis hater. Yes he isnt perfect, no one is.. but like him or not you cant deny that he is one of the quickest drivers on the grid and also one of the most exciting to watch when the going gets racy.

You avoided the bit where Merc have funded Hammy's whole career.

The best car will always win a one make race.

How about you focus on truefan's hugely ungrateful comment?

what ungrateful comment?
do you work for Mercedes Benz corporate?
what a load of hogwash

focus on your own discussions and stop bringing my name in to deflect from your rather pedestrian comments.

Eh? If you read back you will see that I quoted your comment about Merc funding his career and said it was true. Only a complete fool would try to deny this well known fact.

Maybe because I agree that it was a bad mistake by Merc... and thats not taking anything away from Merc for the brilliant car they have provided Hamilton with.

The best car will always win a one make race.

Im actually kinda stunned at your belief that the driver doesn't make any difference... Needless to say, I disagree.

So who are the other drivers who've had almost their whole career funded by one manufacturer/brand/company, like Hamilton has.

You could do with a deeper look into spec series, or categories with a heavy parity element.
