Usually insurance companies are not covering fire costs. It is too easy to initiate on your own and get money from insurance companies. I do not know how many drivers are ready to drive into the waterreservoir voulentarily...

Ott Tanak and co-driver Raigo Molder escaped unhurt when their M-Sport Ford crashed into a reservoir on the first full-length stage of Rally Mexico on Friday.

The Estonian rolled off the road just under two miles into the Los Mexicanos stage on the Friday morning.

Their Fiesta landed in the reservoir and was completely submerged within 30 seconds, the crew reckon.

Tanak and Molder were able to escape before the car sank, with Molder managing to retrieve his pace notes intact.

M-Sport boss Malcolm Wilson said: "Our first priority is the crew and we're enormously relieved that they're OK."

Mystery had surrounded the incident at first, with the submerged Ford completely disappearing from following crews' view and all radio communication lost when it went into the water.

You can insure a rallycar. For accident or even fire. There are a number of companiew that do that. The insurance is expensive and you have to pay a some 10% of the costs of the damage yourself anyway.
Wilson might not have inaurance, simply because he has calculated that it will be cheaper to have a few cars / year destroyed than pay for the insurance. It is his company and labour for building is "cheap" for him, parts net price as well. If someone rents a car, either insurance or a deposit is required

Tanak admitted he and co-driver Raigo Molder were lucky to escape the crash. But they are both keen to restart on Saturday, if M-Sport can get the car back to service and running again.

"It's important to get back out there," Tanak told AUTOSPORT. "It would be good for our confidence.

"It wasn't a nice crash at all. I saw the water coming on the screen when we rolled.

"We took off the belts and as soon as we opened the doors the water came in and the car sank."

It is reckoned the car was fully submerged 15 seconds after entering the lake.

The organisers have sent divers to the scene to locate the car and a crane is currently being found to lift it out.

M-Sport's Malcolm Wilson said: "The most important thing - the only thing - is that Ott and Raigo are both OK.

"After they got back, we talked about things and I said to them that I thought it was important for them to get out again if they could.

"But, at the same time, I made it quite clear that I would fully understand if they didn't want to. But they were both very keen to be back in the car."

The team will not know the extent of the damage to the Fiesta until it arrives back in service, but Wilson is confident his team can get it going.

"I think it should be OK, we can get the car running again," he said.

"We can get the water out of the engine, it wasn't seawater or anything like that, so it should be fine - providing we can get it back in time."

exactly. it is certain scenario in 4 stroke engine when the water comes in, in the next stage water can't go anywhere, the pistons are first to break, and this can lead to more serious damages.

It's been a very scary morning and me and Raigo have both been fortunate. We went over a compression under braking and it felt like something had broken. Then we couldn't make it round the next corner and slid off the road on the right side, it was a steep drop into the water and we just rolled in.
The car went under water really quickly but we were fast getting out. My intercom cable caught a little and pulled me back. I remember putting my hand on the spoiler to look for Raigo and the car just went down.
We had to swim back to the land and climb up, it was about 25 metres. It was very scary and we were lucky.
It was a hard time for M-Sport team as our phones were in the water and we couldn't contact them, it was a while before everyone knew we were ok.
The team hope to get the car back and see if it's possible to start tomorrow..... Let's see. Raigo has already been drying the pacenotes!!

I am Tanaks fan. Saw him in Latvian winter rally outperforming more modern cars with golf MK2 at relly young age. He has what it takes to win in WRC. He has it! Money is that he doesn't have!!
