Thank you Bartolbia84 for starting up this thread, for me it's important to give WRC 2 & 3 their own podium, let's face it; probably all the exciting stuff in '15 will come from these youngsters. I hate it that there is hardly anything shown on the official websites. No video's, just very poor. There is a huuuuuge shortage of future Loeb's and Ogiers so WRC 2 and 3 needs attention and coverage to attract sponsors and therefore BUDGETS.
Great to see Sander Pärn on WRC2 probably his price for winning the Fiesta Cup and Keith Cronin who has got the funds together.
Probably PSA has chosen for the confugaration Citroen R5 for WRC2 and Peugeot for ERC?

The fact that in one(big) rally the car was ok doesnt mean its reliable,we have seen a lot of problems even to smaller rallies.i think this is the main reason why privateers are afraid of using this car.honestly,if tou were to compete to wrc2 you would choose this car??

well, he could have fight with Bertelli :)

FIA should have create some kind of WRC privateer cup. It could attract some teams, and sometimes see young guns starting local round in a WRC car.

Ounin
16th December 2014, 12:49
I remember last year there were more privateers like Protasov, Kuipers also Jipocar Racing had two entries in France. This privateer cup sounds good idea otherwise gap between works and non-works is only increasing. like LMP1 at WEC (Le Mans Prototypes) were they created a privateer cup, not very successful yet -just two entries- but probably attracting more teams to enter in '15.

Craig Breen´s team in WRC2 is called Sainteloc Junior Team, not Peugeot Rally Academy like in ERC. Probably his WRC2 campaign is payed in big parts by his father´s business.

Ounin
30th December 2014, 10:05
Yes Craig Breen's father is rich. I don't see the point in your next remark; Peugeot Rally Academy is run by Saintéloc, it is exactly the same team. They only changed names according to the different championships.

WUff1
30th December 2014, 10:43
Of course Sainteloc services the cars in ERC, but Peugeot is paying and giving orders to Sainteloc. I just was wondering about the name of Peugeot missing in WRC2 campaign.

Ounin
30th December 2014, 14:04
Okay that's a good one, I guess PR wise PSA wants Peugeot only in ERC...but that's a contradiction because Citroen is also participating ERC next to Peugeot... So I don't understand either ;)

Mirek
30th December 2014, 14:13
Citroën is not participating in ERC as a manufacturer. There is no Citroën official entrant. It's most likely like Wuff said. ERC campaign of Peugeot is run and financed by PSA while the WRC2 starts of Breen are most likely his personal interest. Anyway I can't see any benefit of manufacturer entry into WRC2. The marketing value for them is close to zero. WRC2 is good for private drivers.

Well, me too:)

Grøndal is undobtely fast, he beated most of the wrc2 drivers last years in sweden with an old impreza gr N.
Brynhildsen has good results in international rallies several times, won in wales couple of years ago (disqulified when his team put unhomologated calippers on the backbrakes)
Larsen is top 5 contender, was fast in sweden and finland in an R2 couple of years ago.

Åhlin is swedish, and fast:)

Tidemand is the biggest favorite to win, with grøndal and brynhildsen to do what they can. Going to be exiting to se those two on sigdalrally this weekend, grøndal first on snow with Ds3 R5.

Thought so but that article focuses only on WRC-2 and I know YLE is quite reliable in their reporting.

But Prokop or Kubica are surely not testing a new version of a Fiesta WRC before homologation.

Fabia R5 was tested by lot of drivers, this is nothing special. For example Abbring was testing Toyota WRC and for sure he is not factory or semi-factory driver of Toyota...

Baumschlager is testing Fabia R5, but Kremer is just his customer. And not the only one customer. I presume Lategan will do also few rounds in WRC 2 with fabia R5 (just my personal bet) but he has also nothing in common with Skoda Motorsport.

Well that's an interesting piece of information. From Lappi's point of view it is an obvious step forward after winning ERC title. The article goes a little bit further and suggests Lappi taking Mikkelsen place in third VW car after Mikkelsen probable move to Toyota. And one thing I didn't understand, probably because of poor google translation. What it's saying about factory team? Is it about Skoda being one in WRC2 or other plans?

I just thought that the sentence from rallye-magazin article:

could mean something more. Maybe some kind of WRC commitment from Skoda.

I'm not sure about Mikkelsen but I believe that Seb and Jari-Matti's contracts are up at the end of 2016. Honestly I think any driver is possible for Toyota if they are prepared to pay them and can convince them of a competitive programme. The second part shouldn't be too hard.

2017 Toyota drivers will be Eric Camilli and Teemu Suninen, but definitely they will need a nr1 Star Driver and there is only Ogier, Neuville and maybe Latvala that kind of kaliber.

Mikkelsen is not yet there. If he is not able to take one more step during this season I doubt he will ever achieve that kind of level.

Camilli will drive WRC2 during this year (also next year) and Suninen is aiming to drive WRC3 in 2015 and WRC2 in 2016. If they are able to win during these two seasons, it´s sure that in 2017 they are still learning...

VW & Ogier are keen to stay together. Would be good for Latvala to get rid of Ogier´s shadow and I think that if Hyundai´s new i20 WRC is not a real winning car, Neuville is ready to move on. He has a three-year contract (2014-2016), so it would be possibe to drive a Toyota in 2017...

A noob question: is a RRC faster than a r5, if yes why they compete together?

Mirek
26th February 2015, 12:11
Sometimes RRC is faster, sometimes not, the main advantage is that RRC are much more reliable although also much more expensive. They compete together because there is very small number of RRC cars everywhere except WRC events and it makes no sense to keep them in separate class. The mistake was to replace S2000 homologations with RRC in 2011.

To some points I do agree; on very rough gravel rallies as well as in comparison with the RRC Fiesta yes, the Fiesta R5 is not a holy machine. But the Peugeot and Citroen are by far not in that stage of development, even to do those kind of comparisons; they are in the stage of proving themselves this season they are a good investment.

Finally we must agree that M-Sport decision to come out so early with their R5 was good. They have sold over 100 cars already (and still selling good) and you can imagine the amount of feedback they have got + spare parts they have sold as well... And about the reliability. R5 car is not WRC and with that price it is not easy to build bulletproof car. If you keep it on the road and drive it in a local championship lenght rallies then the reliability is good enough, except 208 T16, so far:-P

I tend to disagree with this part. The R5 aren't reasonably cheaper than S2000 (I asked one team which run both Fabia S2000 and Fiesta R5 and they told me the running cost is nearly same) but their reliability is a lot worse. The more developed S2000 were very reliable cars.

tommeke_B
24th March 2015, 10:52
Well, if you compare the first R5 car (Fiesta) to the first S2000 car (Punto)... DS3 R5 is quite reliable I think. In total there were 16 starts with DS3 R5 in Belgium so far. 11 finishes, 1 mechanical retirement, 1 crash, 2 retirements with broken wheel after crash/driving too long with puncture (both in Spa), 1 excluded. So 1 mechanical retirement on 12 complete events, and it's interesting to mention that this retirement was on the very first outing of DS3 R5 of Verschueren in Ypres last year. :)

In Belgium you drive mostly on tarmac, we should get some statistics about gravel/rough gravel events as well. Stats could change dramatically :) Although in local Estonian events R5 cars so far have performed well on every aspect, we have rallies around 100 stage km's which is not that much.

I'm sure that Belgian stages as demanding for mechanical components as gravel stages like in Nordic/Baltic regions. It's there are different types of tarmac, some very grippy, there are some gravel parts that are too brutal for tarmac set-up imo, there are very long straights that let cars go to RPM limiter, combined with junctions that lets cars brake all the way back to 1st gear to accelerate all the way again. It's different, but not less demanding than most gravel events I think. Also events here are longer than in most (not all) national championships, in average some 200km SS. Spa Rally was 200km SS, Condroz 243km SS, Rallye de Wallonie on first weekend of May will be 250km SS. Haspengouw had some brutal gravel sections that caused some drivers to retire (including a Lancer '05 WRC, where I've seen the wheel break off from big holes on a straight). Biggest difference between WRC and national events in Belgium is the amount of service the cars get, in Belgium there is probably 2x as much service as in WRC, compared to the SS kms they have to do.

Ounin
24th March 2015, 14:05
To say the DS3 R5 is quite reliable in Belhium is too early in the Champioship. We just had second rally this year last week at Spa. On the RPM limiter side you are right, engine wise they have to go through some tough sections, on suspension side, cutting corners as what they do in Belgium is some thing, but pure rocky gravel sections is something very different the DS 3 as well as the Peugeot have to prove their strength. I remind you that there was some hesitation of Karl Kruuda with his new DS3 R5 in beginning of the season he postponed WRC Sweden as I recall after having problems on the Arctic.

It'll be Camilli for WRC2 and Suninen for WRC3, as Team Oreca. Six rounds at least, detailed program later.

WRC.com says POR, ITA, FIN, GER, FRA (+ Catalonia for Camilli)

Well... Teemu got very strong karting background and it´d help him going forward. It was same thing with EP Lappi.

Okay I know from Lappi but did not know about Suninen karting background. It makes him the guy who will be closely followed by manufactures.
I think the reason VAG has Lappi & Pontus as the drivers for the R5 Skoda this year is a future contract in case VW doesn't need JML for '16... so a very important year for the two. And a learning year for Teemu. Who says there is no future for Scandinavian talents;)

Henri Haapamäki was the fastest 2WD driver in last year NORF with a Citroen C2 R2 MAX. The test rally is Rally Adriatico (1-3.5) were also Teemu Suninen should be.

The entry list is still empty. http://www.ewrc-results.com/startlist.php?e=20156&t=Rally-Adriatico-2015

Btw, what is the different between Rally Adriatico and Rally Adriatico TRN?

Change of plan for Breen:

'After his retirement from WRC Rallye de Portugal last month Peugeot Rally Academy driver Craig Breen has changed his WRC2 Championship plan.

The FIA European Championship leader has decided not to compete as planned on WRC Poland at the start of July but instead will take his SAINTéLOC Racing run Peugeot 208T16 to WRC Rallye Deutschland. The rally which takes place from the 20th to the 23rd of August sees Craig swap gravel for tarmac saying, “We were looking forward to Rally Poland, but after our non-finish in Portugal, we feel this is the best decision to help us on our campaign to win WRC2.”

Although WRC Rallye Deutschland is seen as one of the most difficult asphalt rallies of the season it’s a happy hunting ground for Craig as he has tasted success there before when he won the World Rally Academy class back in 2011. This along with completing a full reconnaissance of the event last year makes the switch a sensible decision.'

I expect it to be another fail after all previous efforts with any Impreza coming after the hatchback. Gr.N cars are pretty much dead (especially in asphalt countries). They will slowly disappear and the only thing we can do is to get used to it.

AndyRAC

I don't know why they bother trying to flog a dead horse. ( Well, I do; they are a business) but at the top level GpN is dead.

It can maybe have some future outside of Europe. Japan is using it, as a lot of asian countries. In a lot of American countries too, and of course in Africa. But the cars there were second hand cars ...
and the market is too slow for big production.

Mirek

How many loudly announced Subaru gr.N have we seen after the hatchback? They did some promotional events with Arai or with Higgins and Cronin in another case but that was all. Nearly nobody bought those cars.

Laukkanen is driving one in Kenya, probably for commercial reasons. I suppose it's a TMR built Sub, not the JRM one.
There's one too in USA, but I don't know if it's a JRM or something locally built. And a few in Finland, but it's TMR, not JRM cars.

This one is for sure a failure. It happened to late too ...
Maybe the new could be a success. Sub Canada, Sub USA, STI in Japan, ... some are already using the WRX STi 2015. Maybe it can have a commercial success if it well done. The car looks better, more agressiv, closer to a real rally car.

Mirek
21st June 2015, 13:20
Yes but we speak about few cars here and there while there are thousands of N10-N16 everywhere. It's not a success to sell less gr.N cars than WRC.

AndyRAC
21st June 2015, 13:27
I'd rather see JRM try to build a R-GT Nissan, with either the 370Z or GT-R than try to build a car which can't compete with R5's in WRC2. At least a R-GT would be a 'crowd pleaser'. The GpN cars are as dull as ditchwater.

Bryan Bouffier driving an OPEN N group car last weekend was able to win Polish championship round. An OPEN N group car is basically a Mitsubishi Lancer or Subaru Impreza with bodywork of a different car, a Ford Fiesta in this case. Bryan beat multiple R5s this time and he also was 2nd in a previous round a few weeks ago. If that kind of cars would get more popular then there would a market for Mitsubishi and Subaru, but not a direct brand exposure though.
