Wi Fi security

OK! before the nerds jump on me and ask why I didn't ost this on the hardware/software thread, ..........I can't find that thread.
Anyway, I have now subscribed to the high speed DSL connection, and I note that everyone else around me have their connections secured.

I also need to use wi fi to let my wife run her lap top, so I need to know how to get the line secured.

I use a Belkin router.

Nah, I dont know much about it, Dave could tell you better, but the storey came from the arrest and prosecution of two people for smooching around in their cars with their laptops and tapping into other peoples internet connections. Of course the dreaded spectre of the paedo came into it somehow!

The show was doing what it often does best: sensationalising an issue to provoke a response.

The arguement was along the lines of "say a paedo sits outside your house and uses your unsecure network, your router will show that you've accessed child porn sites".

As Jim says, this follows the arrest of two people (who were subsequently cautioned) (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/hereford/worcs/6565079.stm).

The arguement for it being harmless was that if I sat outside your house and used the light from your window to read my paper, that would be ok.

My short contribution was that if you're on a capped usage plan (common in the UK as ISPs compete on price not service :rolleyes: ) then someone abusing your network could, theoretically, put you over your limit and incur a fee - so dishonestly depriving you of money.

I only sent them a text, next thing I know there's a producer on the phone asking if he could put me on air! :laugh:

Paedophiles would be best off using an anymouse web surfing program like silentsurf. Silentsurf was our best friend at uni and school for accessing blocked sights or sights that shouldn't have been blocked but were :mark: If you go looking at kiddie porn on someone elses connection it's still going to show up on your laptop in some way shape or form unless you clean it up properly.

The Jeremy Vine show is hugely annoying in that it grabs a non-issue that at best affects a handful of people and then blows it out of proportion.
