Today (Friday, August 29th) with the Atlanta and Richmond races left, Mike Helton said that NASCAR considered Tony Stewart eligible for earning a spot in the chase. Even though Stewart won't fulfill the requirement of attempting to qualify for each race, NASCAR considered the circumstances causing Stewart to miss the previous three races to qualify under the "except in rare instances" clause. I agree and think they did the right thing.
