Credits to Spain for dominating all major events in the last 6 years.

I think the main responsible for this result is the rediculous Del Bosque.

Rollo
19th June 2014, 01:18
Yet again the Murdoch dominated press chooses to ignore the world's biggest sporting tournament by filling up its newspapers with the result of some throwball (Rugby League) match where two teams played extremely dourly.

Australia has performed much better than I would have expected thus far.
They have scored 3 more than I expected and conceded 6 less thus far; but they're still hopelessly outclassed.

Still, there's the Asian Cup next year...

pino
19th June 2014, 07:33
Aussie should be proud of their Squad, they have performed a lot better than Spain

Storm
19th June 2014, 07:54
exactly. atleast had the balls to fight inspite of a total lack of talent.

fin de ciclo indeed for Spain...for all saying it was end for Barca, this is what an actual end is. Anyways they should be proud of what they achieved (which I think will not be done again) till the start of this Cup. They should forget the games they played here as well as the players who started (except Iniesta who seemed to be trying at least - Koke, Morata, Thiago, Jese are the future)

Storm
19th June 2014, 07:59
Its clear as we Barca followers have seen. The core style and spine of this team have lost their edge. They just dont look like World Champions they were. I dont see they have enough anymore.

Hell yeah.
Some decision making is baffling though- Del Bosque removed Pique and put in an even SLOWER guy like Martinez in? No central defenders around? I blame Pep for this. playing converted midfielders as centre backs and removing #9s. No Villa at all?
Casillas still played despite his error filled game1 and directly contributed to Chile's 2nd goal. Ramos was useless as ever - can he only head in goals for RealM ? Alba anonymous as was Azpilicueta while Carvajal is cooling his heels (or is he injured )
I fear we have seen the last of Xavi in a Spain AND Barcelona shirt.

steveaki13
19th June 2014, 08:05
Rumours are Xavi is heading to Qatar.

pino

http://my.liveireland.com/page/radio-1I think the main responsible for this result is the rediculous Del Bosque.

Totally agree ody, how could he bring useless Diego Costa and leave Llorente home. Also why he didn't give a chance to Mata, or more time to Cazorla and Cesc ? Also Spanish squad showed a very poor condition and had no ideas, determination and motivation to win...

Rollo
19th June 2014, 08:21
Aussie should be proud of their Squad, they have performed a lot better than Spain

Australian will get torn to curtains by Spain. Group B this time around will be a 9-6-3-0 group, I think.

Tactically Australia is confused. It plays a lot like an A-League side and tries to push out to the wings but apart from Cahill, no-one ever really has a presence either in the front third or in controlling the midfield.
I expect that tiki-taka will mean that Spain should dominate possession for extended periods which will leave Australia ball watching. They couldn't do that against the Netherlands and against Chile they could do it, but Chile had an attack with bite.

gadjo_dilo
19th June 2014, 08:58

And his coach at Al Arabi will be Dan Petrescu.

Totally agree ody, how could he bring useless Diego Costa and leave Llorente home. Also why he didn't give a chance to Mata, or more time to Cazorla and Cesc ? ...

Most of coaches are stubborn and persist in keeping some players in the squad. Sometimes those players have a sparkle and the coach is like "I've told you".

Also Spanish squad showed a very poor condition and had no ideas, determination and motivation to win...
Is there a better motivation than winning the world cup?
I thought that's every player's dream. To play for the national team and win trophys.

Sorry, for a moment I've forgotten the world we're living in.......

I cheered all the way for Chile on behalf of my cousins husband who is Chilean!! I knew as soon as I saw the passion on their faces during their national anthem that they would win...... Spain's opening game also gave me a hint too :p :)

PS: Chile must have the record for a national football squad with so many neck tattoo's! An Air Jordan logo on one player and a Louis Vuitton one on another were my personal favourites. Classy mates.

I think England have an advantage given the speed of their front line.
Uruguay will have to improve a lot in order to fight for victory.

Uruguay are one of only three national teams to have won more against England than lost.

Englands record v Uruguay: 3-3-4

steveaki13
19th June 2014, 21:52
Very sorry steve, but why was Suarez allowed to run and pass 5 English players, without anyone followed him ? :s

Cause we are not very good. :p

The trouble here in England is, that the press and fans said that this was a development side for the future and no expectations.

Then the draw was made and it was seen as such a tough group that England wouldnt get out of it. The press and fans were resigned to have a poor tournament and likley missing out.

However despite all the above. The last month has seen more and more people on TV & Radio saying we can make it to Quarters. Why do these people suddenly see us as getting a lot better? Strange way English minds work.

I said we would never get out of this group and i stand by it. I hope the media don't go mad after this, but I suspect we will be subject to the usual "death of English football" headlines.

Realistically we just go again for Euro 2016.

I don't think that England played badly, it's just that they are toothless.

England retained 62% of the possession and completed 75% of their passes as compared with Uruguay's 55% of completed passes.
Where Uruguay won this match was by having a compact central defence and when they back pedalled, the central midfield also plugged their central area. This meant that when England did get into the last third, they were out manned.

Both of Uruguay's goals came from play which got in behind an open England back four which played flat across the pitch and was sluggish in getting back to defend. Gerrard's flick to Suarez was more of his effort (badly) to cover for a back four which failed in their basic job.

Technically it's not really that hard to diagnose but then again, being an armchair pundit from the other side of the world, I have a far easier job than the XI on the pitch.

This was atleast a slightly adventurous/attacking England. The reason I dislike England is due to the hype by media/fans about their chances and how they deserve to be at the top table when in reality they have been piss poor sicne Italia 90. The 2006 England matches were perhaps the worst World Cup games I ever saw...

Surely that was 2010?

2006 was OK - 1-0 win over Paraguay (boring), 2-0 over Trinidad & T (dramatic v Minnow) 2-2 v Sweden was a cracking game. (Joe Cole Volley)

2010 was the dire one: 1-1 with Usa, 0-0 With Algeria and 1-0 over Slovenia all dull as dish water.

As I understand things, in order for England to go through, they need to beat Costa Rica, by a number of goals - quite possible.

Spot on Scores: 2/23
Correct Result: 9/23

I mean spot on scores are pretty tough, correct results are easier.

Could be better really. Spain have screwed me twice.

Hi everyone, I have a tip for you. If you order any pizza for an England (if you're UK) match, you might have to do so in advance cos it was crazy at work last night, the busiest I've ever seen imo (I'm a delivery driver!) with some people waiting over an hour. Oh dear. :p

Aw shame about last night, I only heard the result from a customer...

Is it lame I actually forgot it was world cup this year...?

I assume you are not a football fan then Rj?

You are a delivery driver. That explains why the Pizza I ordered on May 29th isn't here yet. ;)

Haha! Well I´m more of a motor racing fan really. ;)

Um I do kinda have an interest, but only in premier league (especially when Reading are in) and world cup really, though managed to miss this entirely so far!

Yes, IT IS LAME. Even if you're not interested it's impossible to be so head in the clouds to don't notice that all the people around you ( I suppose you don't live around Mark  ) talk only about it.

Good Luck!

One caveat:

Any deviation from this scenario and England is out!

Alexamateo
20th June 2014, 16:03
Another scenario that could happen is if Italy beats Costa Rica, Costa Rica beats England, and Uruguay beats Italy and you could have a team with 6 points in the group stage getting eliminated.

Storm
20th June 2014, 16:18
Surely that was 2010?

2006 was OK - 1-0 win over Paraguay (boring), 2-0 over Trinidad & T (dramatic v Minnow) 2-2 v Sweden was a cracking game. (Joe Cole Volley)

2010 was the dire one: 1-1 with Usa, 0-0 With Algeria and 1-0 over Slovenia all dull as dish water.

Now that you remind me, 2010 was dire indeed - that Algeria game..Algeria should be banned too as they only ever qualify to get a goal-less draw - and usually at the expense of Egypt and the likes.

But 2006 was when England had the most hype around them what with the Golden Generation - golden ? rubbish more like it..that T&T game is what I think really ticked me off..they scored 2 but looked horrible through-out.

So Argentina again today and they play Iran. Which pre Tournament I said 5-0 to Argentina, but despite the goals we have seen it also appears countries that park buses (which Iran surely will) can really hold out. So maybe only a 1 or 2-0 win?
