The most one sided international football game since England beat Germany 5-1 in 2001........

Sorry. :dozey:

I couldn't stop laughing at Neuer being absolutely pissed that Brazil scored - when being 7-0 up. that's hilarious... and soooo German

Genuinely though, one of the strangest results ever. I wasn't actually watching the game (stuck at work and forgot it was on) but chucked it on to see it at 6 nil. Watched the highlights of the goals and then went back to being live and took me 5 minutes before I realised that they'd got another between the time that I checked the score and the time that I finished watching the first 6 goals! GUess that after 3 went in the heads went down but all the goals looked like boys against men, the defending was worse than anything I've watched all season at Exeter City...and that's saying something.

No, but I can say Mineirãnaço

Seriously, what the heck was that?

If Scolari hasn't already handed in his resignation as Brazil manager by the time that I've read this, he probably will by the end of the day. I suspect that his last match in charge, will probably also be the last time that many of these Brazilians will ever make the Seleção. It is fitting to use the other nickname for the Brazil national football team, the "Canarinho" or Little Canary, because like a canary in a coal mine, it probably died and I'm sure that just like when Germany lost the 2002 World Cup Final against Brazil, they too will now hold a national enquiry into the whole structure of football.

Hopefully Brazil's absolute thrashing last night will put to bed this perception people have in the run up to every World Cup that they are a bit special and should be worshipped. Its a bit like how we all think England will win it this time but we ignore the fact we aren't that good. Brazil have won quite a few World Cups and have earned respect, but they are not untouchable like we always seem to think. Last night was embarrassing to watch and I can't imagine how the Brazilians themselves felt. I think it'll be a Germany vs Netherlands final as I can't see Argentina having the quality. Germany are just on another level this tournament and are the only team apart from Holland to have a squad full of talent and players with passion and not a star with 10 men following.

Now I won't know who to pull for in the final if it is Netherlands vs. Germany. It would be a fun thing to be a jerk, act all stupid (actually not an act ;)), and brag about being the only member to pick Netherlands before the WC started, but I hate “The Diver”.

I'd not be surprised if we lose it 0-1. (probably Messi's only successful move of the game - that's how the Argies got to the semis in the first place) Whenever Germany plays well, we lose the final (66, 72, 92) :s We normally win when we play shit (90,96). Easy. To quote from Skinner, Baddiel and the Lightning Seeds:
Tears for heroes dressed in grey
No plans for final day
Stay in bed; drift away

That seems to work :D

Headlines tomorrow...
Maxi Rodriguez Breaks Jar Of Marmalade.

I've seen some exciting 0-0 draws over the years and although this match was technically brilliant, neither side showed a lot of bravery. Argentina might have had five shots on target in two hours but I honestly can not even recall a single Dutch shot on target at all. The word "dour" springs to mind here.

If Germany pull out even a single trick from their overflowing bag in the final, then Argentina stand little chance. Today they showed that they were largely without imagination.

We played like Schwach-Gelb (sorry I'm a Schalke fan) in 2010. That was great to watch, but we didn't win a fucking thing. This year I think there's just the right mixture between clinical cynicism and efficiency (against USA, France) and 'hooray football' (against Portugal, Brazil). If we don't make it on Sunday, we'll not make it anytime soon again. The current squad is so much better than the winning teams of '90 and '96.

I went to bed at half time but forgot how to sleep so I turned the tv back on for the penalties. Even those were boring. Why didn't van Gaal change the keeper again? Not that I know, but he did live in the area and owned a kart track and golf course near by.

Michael Jackson and David Blaine once came to Exeter with Uri Gellar (who used to be a 'big fan' when he thought he could get publicity from it) for a day, it was all very surreal. Jackson was made an honorary director. David Prowse was also involved in the club at one time, although the name isn't recognisable he is better known as Darth Vader (although James Earl Jones did the voice).

Adrian Edmonson (from the Young Ones and Bottom) is a season ticket holder at City though, he lives in the area and is a pretty big fan.

Slightly OT but worth mentioning somewhere; talk abouthaving "Promoters Remorse" :grenade:

Organisers of the German Grand Prix are regretting a marketing decision which has seen hundreds of fans taking advantage of a €77 (£61) discount on some last-minute tickets. The race organisers at Hockenheim promised to apply an €11 (£8.70) discount for every goal scored by the German football team against Brazil on Tuesday. The team went on to score a record breaking seven goals, resulting in a massive discount of €77 on selected tickets for the race in just over a week.

10th July 2014, 15:27
Why didn't van Gaal change the keeper again?

They had already used all of their substitutions.

The more I think about it, the softer Argentina's World Cup draw becomes. :mark: Would be a little disappointed if they won it to be honest.

steveaki13
10th July 2014, 16:51
To be fair Netherlands beat Spain & Chile? Thats not bad and Argentina (just) beat them plus a decent Belgium side.

Argentina have set up pretty defensively but thats seen off some decent teams.

The other side of the draw is weak too. I mean Brazil were average as hell but made the semi.

Germany laboured v Ghana who got their only point v Germany and struggled massively against Algeria.

No one has looked good all the way through.

Germany probably have had the best attack and beaten only France who looked strong.

Thus I reckon best attack and maybe most miserly defensive now. 0 goals conceded in 3 knock out games and only 3 all tournament. 2 of those in a laid back tie v Nigeria.

Thus its best attack v best defense. That seems like the teams who are each best at the two key apsects have made the final to me.

Normally the BBC show highlights of every single World Cup match in a special programme. The 3rd placed match is the only one they dont bother with.

So clearly the BBC think it is a waste of time.

I guess it comes from the Olympics. I generally and the fact the early Olympic Football tournaments were considered World Cups and they must have had a 3rd placed match (i.e Bronze medal). So I guess it stuck.

3rd place playoff is just rubbish. The team that wins is third, so the better of the semi-final losers - still losers. And the one that gets beaten again ends the tournament with two losses after making it to the semis. It's basically justb a game for who gets kicked in the family planning the hardest.

Interestingly the Euro's do not have one. I believe the Copa America does though.

Current 3rd Place reigning champions (?) in Europe are Czechoslovakia who beat Italy in a penalty shoot-out in 1980.
The English FA Cup briefly flirted with a 3rd place match from 1970-74 and that too was abandoned due to lack of interest.

I can understand in say the Olympics, where they issue a bronze medal, the need for a third place playoff but I have no idea why there needs to be one in the World Cup, other than to say that the fixture almost always produces a more entertaining match. I immediately think of 1994 when Sweden beat Bulgaria 4-0 and the final was the most boring boring boring affair; which probably did more to set back US football back a decade than anything else.

jens
11th July 2014, 04:57
The Brazilian-German game is one I'll be remembering for a long time. A true sensation. But I have always supported Germany, and hope they win the title finally after a long time. They have been very consistent throughout previous tournaments, but yet to clinch the title with what is a very strong squad. Hopefully they can keep it up for the finals. Sometimes Germany can put in a graet show (like vs Argentina 4:0 in 2010), but could lose the next decisive match. So it is paramount not to lose form this time.

Argentina coming up steadily like your traditional Italian team - 1:0 or 0:0 wins with penalties, strong defence. Such a team could be tricky for Germany. Teams with consistently strong but unspectacular style have won tournaments before too. Like Greece in 2004. Messi is good as always, but always covered by at least 3 defenders, so he hasn't been able to do much. Which is understandable, because you have to defend with at least 3 people against this guy or he'll break through.

Brazil... I guess many things came together in this one shocking match. Not a very strong team this time. Injuries of key players further weakened the team. Game plan, which was way too optimistic given the state of players and their rival (Germany). And home pressure, which doesn't allow Brazil to play ultradefensively, hoping to eek out till penalties. But from strategical point of view this would have been their only hope...

Crazy crazy stuff. Brazilians looked like they were for the first time ever on the pitch. "Er... Wait-wait a moment? What's going on? What should I do?" And these are top professionals, who have played tens and hundreds of games for top clubs and have experienced all kinds of situations, have lives and breathed football all life and know everything about it like the back of their hand. Incredible. But anything can happen in life.:)

I was a bit sad that Netherland lost, but now I can wear the new orange team track jacket without feeling like a fair weather supporter. :D

I'm still a bit undecided about GER-ARG, I'd quite like to Messi score a couple of goals and Germany has the same problem as Holland, the Bayern Munchen Dive club players. But come Sunday, I think I'll end up rooting for Germany, like always.

BTW, just watched the Neymar presser. What is it with these Brazilians sobbing and weeping all the time? Do those guys have no cojones or anything? Players, spectators - look anywhere they're bawling. Talk about a bunch of people with no self-respect...

I'm also sobbing and weeping all the time and now I finally got to know why: I have no cojones....

As for brazilians, I don't know...
They're different. For them football is a sort of state of spirit.

No really, I'm serious. Whenever they showed the Brazilian players they were sprouting this 'God help us' rubbish and bawled their eyes out. And seriously, if you can't take something as inconsequential as a lost football game without taking leave of your dignity, you shouldn't be in the stadium in the first place. What the heck is that all about? To me that looked a trifle unhealthy.

I'm very serios too. ( although about 75℅ of those who read my posts won't believe it :p). And I cry almost every day exactly cos I don't want to lose my dignity. You're german(?) and probably more calm, reserved, practical and have a high level of self-esteem. Well, we have to put emphatically ourselves into their positions. You have lived football all your life with your heart. This means football largely is life to you - and certainly way of making a living and earning a wage. Then you are playing for your home country at the biggest tournament. Which is not a random country, but one, which aims to win. It is not, say, Tahiti-Germany 1:7, it is Brazil-Germany. You are playing in front of your home crowd in one of the most important matches a sportsman can ever imagine.

So much training, so much preparation, so much effort put into it. It is not just playing and "oh it's only football". Maybe for amateurs, who like to kick around for fun at the weekends it would be like that. But to be a top sportsman you have had full dedication to succeed and made many sacrifices in life to reach your goals. Only for all the effort to go out of the window. I'd cry as well to be honest. You really tried hard, have put so much life and heart into it and you failed badly. This will create an emotion.

Would you watch all of your life work (including reputation) go down the drain without any emotion? Think about any job or education or anything you have gone through in your life. Something you really tried hard to be good at and succeed in. And then in a crucial moment you realized that you were a complete embarrassment. And for these guys it was in front of the whole world audience.

For these guys it was not just a game. Their lives will never be the same again. When they walk on streets, whatever, people (particularly their compatriors, Brazilians) will view them differently. At least many will do. They will be looked at as losers. It will be a different kind of feeling to live with. But I think only truly famous people, who get attention everywhere, can undestand, what this means.

That's all jolly well - they got effed up the bum in front of the world and it hurts. one may cry when bleeding from the bunghole. But they were already crying before it even started. That's what's so ridiculous. They cried after the Chile game when the only thing worth crying about was the ridiculously bad game they had shown. they cried when the sun came out and bawled the raw stuffing out of themselves if someone looked at them cross-eyed.Don't try to tell me that's normal :s

I have had a little while to think about it and decided I also want Brazil to win, but not as badly as I want
the diver to lose. It is hard for me to have favorites because I don't follow the sport at all, but I love the WC. There was a time when I was much younger that I had a small interest in Liga MX, plus I used to attend quite a few indoor games but that is not even soccer. I was really hoping Mexico would have go further into the tourney, and that is why I harbor ill will toward "The Diver" and his dive in that match!

Dog is a dog and generally not considered a term of endearment. It is kind oflike the "N" word, It is ok to use it if it ends with an"a". If in ends in an "r" you are a racist pig. Many people think there is no point in 3rd place games, but I personally enjoy them. Often these games are interesting, because teams care less and take more risks, hence entertainment! I remember Germany-Uruguay 3rd place match in 2010 was exciting, it ended with 3-2!

But yeah, Brazil's defence is absolute rubbish. Whenever Netherlands got past the midfield near to the Brazil's goal, there was always room and danger. Just their passes and co-operation wasn't quite a match to Germany to capitalize with so many goals, but still enough to win this game comfortably.

Tomorrow I want to see what the so far strong Argentina's defence can do against Germany's very organized and multi-talented (with several good strikers) attack. And also if Germany's defence can also effectively neutralize Messi (and di Maria if he re-appears) like Netherlands did. On paper Germany is favourite and I hope they win, but in football you never know what can happen... Argentina's defence should be from quite a different class from Brazil's at the very least.

Germany's team work very much reminds some of the best teams I have seen in action, be it Brazil in 2002 or Spain in previous tournaments.

I don't think Neymar really has that much influence, one player never makes such a mountain of difference. I mean Neymar is a forward, how would he help the hopeless Brazilian defence?

I think the more likely reason is that Brazil's defence in particularly got badly shown up by top teams. Chile and Colombia aren't probably really a match to Germany and Netherlands and when Brazil met rivals from higher class, their deficiencies got badly exposed.

I remember watching the Chile-Brazil game. Brazil already there was pretty unconvincing and were a bit fortunate to get through as Chile looked like at least a match to them in every way.
