I'm an animation student, for those who don't know, and in my future in animation I want to create my own animated series about drivers in a motorsport.
One idea I was thinking of was making it about fictional drivers in Formula 1. But what about the legalities of using that name? Would I have to pay royalties to someone to have Formula 1 in the show's name?

I would guess yes. Formula 1 and F1 are owned trade marks, along with almost every other title with these words included.
Terms like Grand Prix etc are just words and can be used

I'm not a lawyer, but this site http://www.boyesturner.com/news-article.html?id=1495 suggests that Formula 1 Licencing have not managed to claim absolute ownership of the term "Formula 1". Try a web search for something like Formula 1 Trade Mark and see what comes up.

Call it Formula Show and soon enough they'll buy the naming rights from you... nope, wait... why don't I do that?
There already is one, it's called "Rory the Racing Car" and it's 100% realistic :D
Peter Kay is excellent in it :D
