All three tarmac stages of the rally are new and have never been used in the past.
The gravel stages are very carefully chosen to avoid problems with possible showers or snow, due to the early date of the event. All three of them have been used in the WRC event in the last four years and are very 'soft' for Acropolis Rally standards.

Kubica won the Acropolis Rally in WRC-2 last year. I bet he would want to double up his points tally in the ERC by adding another win this year. Although I can suspect a date clash: Acropolis (ends on March 30) is a bit too close to Rally Portugal (starts on April 3rd). I know that RK used the same car (albeit in different specs) in Janner Rallye and in Monte, but I doubt it's possible with Acropolis and Portugal. Knowing his busy schedule for the last couple of years, I guess Kubica wouldn't mind to drive one rally after another with hardly any single day off if we take into account recce & stuff.

Given the fact that the country is in economic free-fall, I imagine there isn't much sponsorship available for rallying in Greece. For crews or for organizers. I read that even the Vovos family got into legal trouble. This year's edition is scheduled earlier than its traditional mid-summer date, so perhaps many drivers still don't yet have sponsorship deals in place.

Just 29 crews?! In Acropolis, one of the most famous rallies in the world? Is this a joke?
I think it's almost the same situation in all ERC rallies, if you exclude the locals. Here, there aren't any locals with S2000 cars. The extra costs that you have to pay in order to be eligible for ERC (tyres maybe, fuel, helmets etc...) was an obstacle for many Greek drivers. However, many Greeks will do both days. We expect around 70+ entries on day 1 totally and around 50 in day 2 totally.

Mirek

Just 29 crews?! In Acropolis, one of the most famous rallies in the world? Is this a joke?

There are 27 foreign crews which is quite ok in my opinion. The problem is just 2 Greek crews on the FIA list. Almost all Greeks are going to take part only in the national event.

Qualifying is mandatory for all ERC events regardless the surface. It's new FIA rule. Anyway if You think that starting position on tarmac doesn't mater You are wrong. On some events in some weather it plays little role but it can be often crucial.

I am trying to remain upbeat, but looking at the entry list and itinerary, it is hard to disagree with the above comments; I could be wrong, but this appears to be the shortest Acropolis ever at 239km. It is basically 6 stages run twice with a 1km Super Special! There are local level events longer than that! The separation of the national entries from the ERC field, as some have already mentioned, does not help at all and appears to defeat the purpose of the "re-invented" ERC; as far as I can tell, participation in and/or winning this series is still as much a road to nowhere as it ever has been. I hope I am wrong and of course will be following along as always, but sometimes it is hard to see what is happening to the sport...

IMO it's better than recent pre-Eurosport ERC but still has some way to go to reach the level of IRC.

It's new FIA rules which created this mess - specific ERC tyres and the end of homologation for most used helmets...

Shortest Acropolis? Sure, but it's ERC, not WRC, so the total kms are less. See for example the kms of the first 2 rounds.

@dimviii: Lappi was really flying in his Skoda, he will be very fast in gravel. Peugeot's did many passes on tarmac, not so many on gravel. Kajto was scaring fast and confident, Tarabus fast but more nervous than Kajto. Serderidis was trying to learn as much as possible. Delta Rally didn't do so many passes, Magalhaes's car caught fire, fortunately, not big damages.

Tarabus had a ride with Kajto and he said that this guy is crazy. GINE, Athanassoulas, had also this experience and couldn't speak for 10 minutes! :D He admitted that fortunately, I don't drive in the Acropolis Rally! :D

I agree, but it seems to me it could be even shorter and the organizers were just trying to make it longer by adding for example SS Aghionori.Maybe the stage wonīt be finally so bad, but it definitelly doesnīt fit to the reputation of mythical Acropolis rally. What happened to all these nice gravel stages? Altogether it seems to me Rally Acropolis this year is weaker twin brother of Rally Cyprus. It should find its own place on sun, this is THAT FAMOUS Rally Acropolis.

Recce quotes:

The leading drivers of the ERC rounded up their first day of recce. The program consisted of all special stages, where the FIA, ERC Priority and the RC2 class drivers did their reconnaissance on the asphalt stages as also on the QS, while all other drivers started their recce from the gravel special stages

1 BOUFFIER Bryan/PANSERI Xavier CITROEN DS3 RRC
"As you know, the stages are very fast and slippery. They will be good fun. The Super Special Stage is a bit strange, but if I set a good time in this, maybe I will like it!"

2 BREEN Craig/MARTIN Scott PEUGEOT 208 T16 R5
"The stages are very very difficult but mostly, very fast. We will be able to say more tomorrow about the whole rally."

3 LAPPI Esapekka/FERM Janne SKODA Fabia S2000
"Today we did recce in the asphalt stages of the rally. They are very fast. The morning was dump, so they were very slippery. We will see what happens. The Super Special Stage is good for the show."

4 KAJETANOWICZ Kajetan/BARAN Jaroslaw FORD Fiesta R5
"Difficult stages. Some parts are very fast and some others are very technical and difficult, but overall I like the stages. Write this please, I like the stages."

5 GRYAZIN Vasily/EREMEEV Dmitry FORD Fiesta S2000
"The stages are quite fast. The Super Special Stage is good for the show. In the tarmac stages, our car will be on the speed limit for a lot of time, which is not so good."

6 ABBRING Kevin/MARSHALL Sebastian PEUGEOT 208 T16 R5
"The stages are very fast and it is very difficult to judge the grip, as there are some places that look like there is no grip. I have previously participated only in Rally Monte Carlo in a 4WD car, so there will be many things to discover."

7 MAGALHAES Bruno/MAGALHAES Carlos
"The tarmac special stages are very fast. The surface is not so dirty, which is good but the stages are so fast, a little crazy."

8 WIEGAND Sepp/FRANK Christian SKODA Fabia S2000
"The stages are really nice and very fast. They are also very slippery, especially today that there was rain. We expect them to be very challenging. We are happy to be here and we are looking forward to the rally.

9 TARABUS Jaromir/TRUNKAT Daniel SKODA Fabia S2000
"As everyone must have noted, the tarmac stages are really fast, I think that in gravel everything will be better."

10 CONSANI Robert/LANDAIS Vincent PEUGEOT 207 S2000
"Today we did recce in the tarmac day of the rally. The stages are fantastic, except from the Super Special Stage which I didn't like."

14 SERDERIDIS Jourdan/MICLOTTE Frederic FORD Fiesta R5
"Very nice tarmac, that in some places looks similar to Monte Carlo. I'm very happy to be here."

151 KOPECKY Jan/DREXLER Pavel SKODA Fabia S2000
"We are here just for the recce. The first two tarmac stages are very slippery but also very fast. Nice stages."

Now he's decided to change to English pace notes (previously Dutch / Flemish co drivers) it will be interesting to see how he copes. INFO AFTER RECCE

Date: 27 MARCH 2014
Day: 2

All of the ERC event participants concluded their recce program today. The FIA, ERC Priority and the RC2 class drivers did the reconnaissance of the gravel stages, while all other drivers continued the recce procedure with the asphalt special stages of the rally.

DRIVERS QUOTES

1 BOUFFIER Bryan/PANSERI Xavier CITROEN DS3 RRC
"The stages we saw today were quite rough, with many stones and definitely, not easy for the car. Despite that they are beautiful. I am looking forward to driving all these stages with a rally car."

2 BREEN Craig/MARTIN Scott PEUGEOT 208 T16 R5
"The gravel stages are very difficult, although they are in a good condition. Today's stages are quite nice."

3 LAPPI Esapekka/FERM Janne SKODA Fabia S2000
"The gravel stages are in a better condition than we expected. Of course they are rough but still, better than expected. I like them."

4 KAJETANOWICZ Kajetan/BARAN Jaroslaw FORD Fiesta R5
"The stages are very fast in some places. Of course this is the Acropolis, so they are also demanding and with a lot of stones. Sometimes the surface is very slippery and this is something we like. We definitely don't want to be first on the road in such conditions."

5 GRYAZIN Vasily/EREMEEV Dmitry FORD Fiesta S2000
"The stages we saw today are good, but I think that after 10-15 cars a lot of stones may come up. But this is fine, no problem."

6 ABBRING Kevin/MARSHALL Sebastian PEUGEOT 208 T16 R5
"Some parts are very difficult. Especially the downhill parts of the 2nd stage (Nea Kineta) are very fast. I enjoy this rally."

7 MAGALHAES Bruno/MAGALHAES Carlos PEUGEOT 207 S2000
"The stages are very nice and also very fast. The gravel ones are much better than I expected. It is my first time here, everyone says that this rally destroys the cars, but the organizers have done a good job. I like this rally a lot."

8 WIEGAND Sepp/FRANK Christian SKODA Fabia S2000
"The stages are nice. Sometimes they are not easy with the pacenotes, but for sure are fun to drive."

9 TARABUS Jaromir/TRUNKAT Daniel SKODA Fabia S2000
"The gravel stages are nice. They are a little fast, but I expected them in worse condition. We will see after the first passage if the road will be destroyed or not."

10 CONSANI Robert/LANDAIS Vincent PEUGEOT 207 S2000
"The road of the 3rd stage (Loutraki) was very broken, while the first two stages (Klenia-Mycenae, Nea Kineta) are very nice. In general, the stages of the rally are difficult but nice."

14 SERDERIDIS Jourdan/MICLOTTE Frederic FORD Fiesta R5
"The gravel stages are beautiful and technical. I mostly like the 3rd stage (Loutraki), because it is the most beautiful stage I have ever seen. The 2nd one (Nea Kineta) is hard for the car, very fast and entertaining. What else could we possibly want?"

16 LATEGAN Henk/WICHA Klaus SKODA Fabia S2000
"The gravel stages are also very nice. The first stage of the loop (Klenia-Mycenae) is more narrow and flowing. The following two are fast, wide, soft and will be a good fun. At the second loop, big rocks will come up."

151 KOPECKY Jan/DRESLER Pavel SKODA Fabia S2000
"Unfortunately we are doing only the recce as we will not participate in this rally. The gravel stages are fantastic. The roads are not as rough as in 2007, when I participated at the Acropolis Rally."

1 BOUFFIER Bryan/PANSERI Xavier CITROEN DS3 RRC
"I am looking forward to start the Rally. We will make small changes in order to make the car better. I will do my best tomorrow."

2 BREEN Craig/MARTIN Scott PEUGEOT 208 T16 R5
"The tarmac stages are very fast. They are the fastest special stages I have ever seen. The gravel is also nice and in some places is rough and in some others fast. It's really interesting. We have prepared the car and I think it's going to be good."

3 LAPPI Esapekka/FERM Janne SKODA Fabia S2000
"Tomorrow tarmac stages are fast and quite smooth. I hope it will not rain, because it's going to be very slippery. The gravel condition is better than I thought. I expected it to be rougher, but I think that they are going to change at the second pass. My aim is to finish the rally and collect points."

4 KAJETANOWICZ Kajetan/BARAN Jaroslaw FORD Fiesta R5
"I like Acropolis Rally. I am happy to be here. It's completely different. We have two rallies in one. After the first day oin tarmac you have to change your mind and your driving approach. On tarmac some parts are fast, some technical and some places are very slippery. On gravel it is really fast."

5 GRYAZIN Vasily/EREMEEV Dmitry FORD Fiesta S2000

6 ABBRING Kevin/MARSHALL Sebastian PEUGEOT 208 T16 R5

I am going to be a little bit slow tomorrow. But I think it's better, because I think it is important to reach the finish in order to collect data. I need to get in to rhythm again because it is my first tarmac event since 2012 in Monte Carlo I 4x4 car."

7 MAGALHAES Bruno/MAGALHAES Carlos PEUGEOT 207 S2000

8 WIEGAND Sepp/FRANK Christian SKODA Fabia S2000

9 TARABUS Jaromir/TRUNKAT Daniel SKODA Fabia S2000

10 CONSANI Robert/LANDAIS Vincent PEUGEOT 207 S2000
"I like the special stages on tarmac. They are fast and a little bit slippery. I really like the first special stage on gravel, but I don't like the stage Loutraki because there are a lot of stones. I want to finish this difficult rally in the top 10."

12 TLUSTAK Antonin / SKALOUD Jan SKODA Fabia S2000
"The Rally is very fast. Both on asphalt and gravel. I don't like this. I would prefer the stages to be less fast. Our target is to finish in the top-10."

14 SERDERIDIS Jourdan / MICLOTTE Frederic FORD Fiesta R5
"We had a very good shakedown. I have good feeling of the car. For sure our target is to finish. But most of all we want to increase our speed, stage by stage on tarmac. I feel better on gravel."

18 PUSHKAR Vitaliy / MISHYN Ivan MITSUBISHI Lancer EVO X
"The shakedown was good, we had no problems. Tomorrow on tarmac we will try to go flat out and on gravel we will try to save the car in stages 2 and 3."

19 TIBOR Erdi Jr. / TABORSZKI Attila MITSUBISHI Lancer EVO IX
"We target the Production category victory. It is our first Acropolis Rally and it is not so easy. Mixed surfaced Rally is something new for me. We will see."

23 ZOUNIS Ioannis / PATRIKOUSSIS Mihalis SUBARU Impreza WRX STi
"It's a very nice and clever Rally. I think that the gravel and also the tarmac stages are typical acropolis. The fans and the drivers are going to enjoy it. Our target is to drive the best way we can without problems. I can't wait for the gravel stages on Sunday."

"We had the best 2WD time at the shakedown, but there are at least four extremely fast drivers. Our target is to win 2WD category. The weather is good. There are a lot of spectators and we are happy."

25 FILIP Alexandru / IANCU Bogdan RENAULT Clio R3

Hi everyboby from the greek mountains.a few things that i noticed until now.there is no hope for a s2000 car to win stage in the tarmac leg.the cars are for a lot of hour to the rev limti, they travel with rev limit.i did not hear any peugeot to the red to the place where i am and its a place when you can hear the car for a lot of time.but i noticed something strange.kajetan's car was also to the rev limit as soon as skoda cars.i believe he uses short gearbox, otherwise the car (r5)could not reach the red so quickly.now i wait for the second loop

Hi Nafpaktos, our member Br21 who is running Fiesta R5 told that the car has only one set of gears homologated and the top speed is 177 km/h. I don't know which gearbox Škodas are running but theoretically they can have top speed up to 184 km/h (they use that on Ypres and one leg of Barum). It's interesting that You say Peugeot gears are longer. If they also have only one set of gears than it might explain why Ucci was slower on twisty Italian roads. Theoretically shortest gearbox You shall see in car of Gryazin (165 km/h or so). Can You confirm?

No, Fiesta R5 has top speed 177 km/h as confirmed by its engineer here on forum. Only one set of gears homologated. Peugeot probably more as Nafpaktos reported rom stages but definitely not 200 km/h. It's only 5-speed box with max rpm 7500. It makes no sense to have so long gearbox. Škoda has various sets of gears homologated. It can have top speed over 180 km/h. Such long gearbox has been usually used in Ypres and in Otrokovice leg of Barum rally.

Meanwhile Todor Slavov, leader of 2WD, retired after an accident.

Fiesta R5 as for now has only one set of gear ratios homologated and only one version of drop gears. Top speed is 177kmh. Don't know about 208 R5, but will try to ask. Fiesta S2000 had few versions of gear ratios and few drop gears, so many options possible, shortest was something around 165kmh and I think Gryazin uses it. We compared R5 with S2000 and R5 was faster in first 3 gears, then S2000 was equally quick, maybe even little bit quicker, but it's little bit off topic in Acropolis thread.

Two questions:

- What are drop gears?
- Why have M-Sport only homologated one set of gear ratios? Lack of competition in R5 up till now made it unnecessary?

1. With drop gears you can change "length" of whole gearbox keeping gear ratios the same. So using short drop you can have short box, using longer drop ratio you can have longer gearbox (higher max speed), but gear ratios remain the same. In S2000 you were able to change max speed around 20kmh changing drop gear.
2. You should ask Malcolm Wilson. I don't know detailed homologation requirements for R5, but I don't think it's a rule you can have only one set of gears and drop gears homologated. Current gear ratio are really OK, when you accelerate you can feel gear changes are smooth, car is smoothly accelerating so it's OK. But one or two additional drop gears would be nice to be able to change max speed for example.

"ā fond" is just the same as "flat out". It's used in French and Flemish pacenotes. Abbring has picked up some things from driving with Belgian codrivers, including the use of "ā fond" in his notes. Quite funny that he prefers it over "flat out", while all other things are English. :)
