thanks for the info too, Juha Koo.

I thinked that place will be good so it's near the area of several Special Stages as I remember. I have been last time at NORF in 2010, but that time we slept at the forests. I suposse that Stages like Urria, Jukojarvi, Leustu, Surkee and similars will be in 2014 itinerary. Or at least, I must say I hope.

Hey rallyfans ,
My girlfriend and I ( a Belgian couple ) are going to Finland for the first time . I ‘m a raikkonen fan .
Most for a holliday but we visit the Neste oil rally also in a short way .
I have a few questions to ( I hope ) some finnish fans of WRC .
We stay at Muurame ( hotelli Vuorikelo ) the first day ( 31/7 ) and two following day's at Jämsä ( jämsä gastahus ) 1 , 2 / 8 . I hope there are a few stages in this area . What are the best stages to look at ? A special one .

So I read in Autosport that Ouninpohja won't be in the rally this year.

Is it the case we will see quite a different rally this year? I went last year with RallyTravel but if they switched things about I'd heavily consider doing it again.

So I read in Autosport that Ouninpohja won't be in the rally this year.

Because of the too high average speed again?

Most likely not, it is just that Ouninpohja (due to it's lenght, easy accessibility and therefore popularity) takes soooo much resources to run. Now that we had it back for couple of years, I don't mind at all if it's not included in the itinerary. Not driving Ouninpohja gives away quite a lot of resources to other uses/stages, e.g. two new 15km stages could be easily done with the manpower released. I think this might be the case, especially after the wide criticism about the route that organizers received after last year's rally.

For me as a spectator, I've seen Ouninpohja already so many times that it doesn't provide so much to me anymore - I've been to every section of it over the years, also in tests. Ofcourse I understand that with foreign spectators it's completely different! But all in all, I'm sure that if Ouninpohja is not included, some other good things will come...

Here is the main idea:

Neste Oil is celebrating their 20 years of sponsoring Rally Finland with an event in Helsinki the weekend before the actual rally. I don't know what cars they'll use, but it's going to be a battle between the current drivers and the old legends. So far Hänninen, Neuville, Ogier, Latvala and Östberg are in from the current drivers and Alen, Kankkunen, Mäkinen and Grönholm represent the legends.

In Helsingin Sanomat article it said it won't be the test cars which will be in use for testing that weekend, but it indeed will be extra chassises for this event alone. So I figure five Hyundais and five VWs will be shipped to Finland, three for the rally, one for tests and one for the PR event.

Tickets:
http://www.nesteoilrallyfinland.fi/en/tickets/

If you don’t have a car it’s difficult. Last year there was bus transportation from Jyväskylä to two stages, Ouninpohja and Mökkiperä. Ouninpohja is not on the itinerary (Kakaristo, SS 7&11 this year) this year but the same spectator area is on Kakaristo also (the Kakaristo junction which is very crowded). If there is any transportation to any stages this year we don’t know until the spectator guides magazines are published. The official one Tuulilasi on Thursday 17.7 and the traditional Vauhdin Maailma on Friday 18.7.

Hello,

NORF 2014 will be for me the first Rally Finland and some questions are coming already in route planning phase and if some local/experienced rally mate can answer that would be great. I like to timeplan the rally but grow up on mediterran rounds of WRC where less strick rules are applied by marshals

- Is it possible to see spectator guide before (on internet) I'm there and buying the tickets? Very few information available from the stages and especially lot of new stages are there in this year. Would be helpfull if someone can upload it in jpg if available as in the last year.

- Out of the official spectator zones possbile to reach the stages on other places? (if I estimate on the map that technically possible due to available roads)

- What is the tipical walking distance between car parking and the stages.

- Heavy traffic jam expected between stages?

- If I'm on the stage at official spectator area can I walk in the forest further beside the stage to see less crowded places? Marshalls are hunting to me in such case if I'm not walking on the road?

Thanks in advance

Nikara has entered in a Fiesta WRC. No idea which team's car it is. Besides the regulars there is also Breen and Solowow in Fiesta's.

It is possible to reach the stage via other roads but usually those places either aren't interesting or all the roads lead to spectator points.

Walking distance depends on two factors, is the parking on a field or road side. Field parking is usually quite close but with road side parking you may have to walk several kilometers if you are arriving close to the time of the stage start.

You can move along the stage but in some places the marshals do hunt spectators, especially before the first car. If it is a prohibited zone (there are very large ones in some places), then most likely someone will tell you to move to another place.

Generally they've very strict about not walking on the road one hour before 1st car, but this of course depends on how is the marshall in sight behaving. But also generally, there good footpaths along the roads in the forests, especially in the stages and areas that have been used in previous years.

Parking is like Franky told + for first timers it often comes as a surprise that even for roadside parking and several kilometres walk you have to pay 3-5 euros for parking.

Some of the access roads seen on maps may be blocked. Those that are known to be blocked are marked on the official guide, but in a nutshell, the smaller the road gets, the less you can predict is it available or not. I don't remember having problems with access roads, but it's possible. Also, many of the official spectating points are nice places. Perhaps not the junctions, but many of the classic and iconic places are also official points. Then again, of course you can find your own perfect flat out corner and spectate it theoratically alone.

Maybe a few. 77 is the number of entries now in the KITI system, some might still be in email and now being added to the system. But it'll be around 80 anyway. Kai Tarkiainen suggested in radio interview this morning that one WRC crew "in different time zone" were allowed to continue their negotiations with sponsors yesterday and they might file in an entry today. By Friday, when the draft list is published, we'll know.

Also Jarkko Nikara was interviewed. He told they have plans to buy a proper test day in Fiesta WRC, but it's not certain yet. Hopefully he can get it, it'd up his chances a lot.

He achived couple of good stagetimes in his home rally with good starting position with WRC.. and we have seen it before. He was champion with Fiesta R2, during the second year of Academy. But there is missing that last small bit.

You must have missed his career in Sweden. And his achievements in international events. Many of you guys talking about nothing matters if you dont do many rallies, even tests before rallies. Tidemand have done almost none of that. Still he is fast, not fastest as you say, but how could that be, talking your launguage of how to keep up with the fastest in WRC...??
It´s true Tidemand not fokusing on rallying so much (that´s what it looks like at the moment) and that is a shame. But neither you or me know nothing what´s behind that. Money? probably and more of that in RX right now.
Lappi and Tidemand in same team, Tidemand with "free" starts in six events 2014 in WRC2 car. For me it´s a mystery how he´s missing in NORF. Lappi too.

There's nothing to gain for Skoda to enter Lappi. They are focusing on ERC. Especially since they don't have the R5 car ready yet so why send Lappi to Finland with the S2000. And if Lappi would like to do it without the factory support then we would have to find the money from sponsors. I don't really see the value of going through all that effort when you already are a factory driver.

Tuulilasi has a couple of articles that were a good read and official parking areas / places of road blocks. VM on the other hand has more depth in stage descriptions (only in Finnish). I honestly couldn't cope with just Tuulilasi since the official way nowadays is to get people into 3-6 places per stage and to me it's impossible to capture the heart of sport on tape from those areas. I'm just hoping there will be marshals that allow me to do just that and I get some fine material to put on my Youtube channel since this is my "cameraman career's" 10-year anniversary.

well, I happen to know that finnish friends are much more goodfellows than you´re telling... ;) I´ve had advices on this forum to some very good places in the past. Of course there will be some recce for us as well on the way and lots of places there are. The happiest moments is when you picked a place and find a bunch of finnish fans with leather gloves and the famous rope sitting hiding in your corner... :)

22nd July 2014, 18:55
It's really difficult to give advice regarding "good places" when for some people that means a possible crashing corner, some think of a high speed jump, some want multiple corners or corners over crests etc. Some are willing to sleep in the forest or walk 5 km for it, some can't or won't...Besides, I would hate to direct one of our visitors to a "bad place" (whatever that means). I don't like to draw more people to my own places for totally selfish reasons: It's usually a lot easier to work with my huge camera when I'm not totally crushed by other people. What I can do is tell that I would like to go to Päijälä (SS6/10) and 5-6 km from start, but my schedule just makes that impossible. There's a long left over small jump into tighter right which would probably look great on tape. Not the easiest place to drive fast.

...and by the way, not an "expert's" opinion, just a cameraman's

I've had plenty of help from some Finnish members here as well, a big thank you again to them. ;) But for stages it's always difficult to predict, what will be the most stunning places and where the crash-spots are.

I had a small look at the maps today. I'm not a local, but from my side 3 places that I'm surely going to do back again this year (and which I did in 2012).

The series of jumps on Ruuhimaki, before the finish, classic place to finish the rally. :) Also worth mentioning, some 500m before the jumps there's a nice series of corners, http://rally-image.be/foto/0311/images/121.jpg right-left into long right before the long straight. Back in 2012 Neuville went off there during shakedown, if I recall correctly.

SS Surkee, some 500m before the last hairpin of the stage (just before finish) there's a nice series of corners, of which the last one is a long left one ending in a nice jump. http://rally-image.be/foto/0311/images/117.jpg http://rally-image.be/foto/0311/images/102.jpg (both photos taken from the same point of view), exit of the jump: http://rally-image.be/foto/0311/images/129.jpg I heard the forest is cut now, so the overview is probably going to be even better. In 2012 some spectator had one, it was great to see a driver, and hear his interview on radio already long before the next car arrives. :)

SS Lankamaa. http://rally-image.be/foto/0311/images/091.jpg http://rally-image.be/foto/0311/images/118.jpg After some 1/3 of the stage there's a junction right close to a lake in the middle of the stage (Lankajarvi), follow the direction of the stage for some 200m and there's this place. right-left-long right, very sideways. :) A few big moments there, the downside was that it was extremely dusty.

The VM-magazine has GPS coordinates for both start and finish. I can post them here or send you PM.

----------------------------------------------

Have you guys already decided where you'll be watching? (Tommeke seems to have a few spots decided already)

My plan is the following...

Skip Thursday because A) I have work and B) stages too far north

Friday morning either Päijälä or Pihlajakoski, then after Vetomies drive to Jyväskylä to A) test the Burger King there (there's two BK's in Helsinki and 1 in Tuusula, both 20 km from my home, never been in none of those...) and B) go see the Harju stage.

Saturday is the hardest decicion, because I'm going to be watching both runs of the stage, and Vetomies.
Last year I was at SS Mökkiperä where #107 (?) R2-Fiesta rolled. I might go somewhere around there, but I don't know how good of a spot that is when the stage is ran the opposite direction.
Having looked at the onboards from youtube and read through the VM-guide, I have two possible spots at SS Jukojärvi. 1) Somewhere from around 16 km to the intersection at 17 km. 2) Somewhere from the intersection at 18 km onwards.
And then Tommeke made the decision even harder by posting those magnificent shots from SS Surkee. Now I might go there (and maybe even have a chat with him).

Sunday is the easiest: somewhere in SS Ruuhimäki

Lundefaret
26th July 2014, 15:09
Close fight between Grönholm and Mäkinen. Gröhnolm fastest by 0.8, but Mäkinen faster, but bogged down on the last corner (tried to take it in second).
Both Grönholm and Mäkinen very precise. Both made some small mistakes giving away a little two much centimetres in the barrel turns. Tommi was better getting acceleration out, (waited for more rotation, and more progressive on the accelerator), and would have been the fastest if not for the mistake in the last corner.

Lundefaret

Neuville overshoot at the first barrel turn on the first run, but quicly in to the rythm. Very presice in the second run, a small mistake in one of the barrel runs, and could speed up the rotation, but very good/progressive in the acceleration. The time was good, and only a very presice run will challenge the time. This will be close:) Seb up now!

Lundefaret

-0.2 on Neuville. Lost a few tents on giving away to many cm on one of the "barrel" turns. Polo accelerates very good from stand still, Ogier very progressive on the acceleration, but a little too hot in the chicane. Actually not as good as one could expect from Ogier. But still fastest, off cource;)

Lundefaret
26th July 2014, 15:25
Mads a little to unprecice in the barrel runs. Not enough surpluss of speed, so under rotates, and giving away to many cm.

Cool down now.
It was mentioned before that there's a conflict with TV rights. And you have to admit that free to view channels are becoming minority and most are subscription or premium subscription channels, who try to snatch valuable TV rights to get more viewers. And in the money world no one gives a s... about "millions" of lads, if you get money from the highest bidder.

This year Myhinpää is on the itinerary again after a few years break (Last time 2009 & 2010). Before 2009 it was along break, last time in 1994. JML said in Vauhdin Maailma’s spectator guide that he like Myhinpää better than Ouninpohja. I also read few comments from drivers (Hannu Mikkola, Markku Alen and Ari Vatanen who’s favourite stage Myhinpää was) from beginning of 90s issues and it seems that the drivers like the stage and it was/is one of “the” stages.

I watched the recce in-car video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0dQkvNMJxQ) and I must say that it was easier to find the nice spots with the help of the spectator guides 1992 and 1993. In 1992 Myhinpää included the small road as it does this year.

Those old spectator guides included more spots for spectating than current guides. As it have been lately, spectator guides nowadays direct spectators to preferred spots instead of spectacular spots. I also noted that there are no driver comments in the official spectator guide “Tuulilasi” about the stages. Anyway this is what I could found out comparing current and old spectator guides whit the recce in-car video. The km is more or less “about”.

NORF 1990 (or 1000 lakse as it was calledin those days).

More than 100%... I really DID want to go to Finland because I heard so much about adventures at Ruskeasanta and Hyvinkää which were both and sand, and I was pretty good on sand...

As for thinking it too scary...come on I my have been living there but I wasn't a Swede! I mean I did emigrate on my own to Sweden when I was 17....most Swedish men are still living at home when they are 33-34!!
But the time and the money wasn't there, and I was living with a nice Swedish girl---and I would have gotten in too much trouble if i went to Finland.

Jan out of curiosity whats your origin?

Gringo daddy and mi mamasita was raised in Panama...I began life in Spanish--and a mixed Latin/Caribbean/Italian culture was strong in the house with many of my Mamasita's brother and sisters coming to stay with us..
I lived in many places in the US South East, then move to Seattle here when I was 15 and then because I want to "do it like they do it" and learn the craft of moto-cross I moved to Sweden first when I was 17--1970... Next time better prepared was when I was 19, then 21 for 2 years then eventually I maintained a foot in Sweden and I traveled all around Europe doing International Moto-cross---although mainly in France...(good pay, lower costs, lots of events and very good people..my favorites..)
Then after I'm all beat up, I lived in London a while then I come back to this area when I was 30 and went to University---and chased lots of cuties...

I went back to main love with bikes which was Enduros---all day long in the woods--takes a toughness which I had in abundance , note HAD-----and one day when its raining hard and maybe 5-6 degrees I see a sign on a tree "WARNING!! This road will be closed on xx Nov between kl 19.46 and 21.46 for SCCA Pro Rally"

And I remember I thought "I bet those bastids ain't soaked to the bone and freezing. " And I decided to build a car and try it out.

Now just like in moto-cross when i begin the "Ricans" aren't any good, well it was---and to a large degree still is that the so called "best" have not a clue what they are doing, and drive extremely poorly...
Brendon Reeves from Ozzie-land came to visit. Nice guy but driving 1,6 Fiesta normal aspirated and a Sadev box---and he beat everybody in the USA and visiting Canadians but a couple of the millionaire guys..good 3rd and 4th Overall...beating 20+ turbo Blue Subarus....and our roads are very fast average speed...115-130 km/hr often (and remember its guys like Brock who really are what NOT calls "Village drivers")..

So origin? That's is rarely important, cause that's just where you start, more important is what you set goals..
I did the motorsports because mainly I wanted to go see and learn from the whole world---and that was a way to pay for it--by getting paid!
So born in USA, but by inclination and experience and by heart an Internationalist..

Bluuford, what's your view on tomorrow, apparently there can be some very heavy thunderstorm cells in the rally area...? No shit! Hopefully it won't be as bad as now around Lankamaa tomorrow.

No shit! Hopefully it won't be as bad as now around Lankamaa tomorrow.

I'm in the car going to SD, all morning radio news broadcasts are warning of "the most severe thunderstorm cells today in this summer". Also we saw some tree damage in the southern direction while driving up towards Jkylä.

Anyway, let's hope stages remain in good condition!

I'm a short guy, wearing white NORF piquet shirt with sponsorship decals and black shorts. Come to say hello if you see me! :)

Is Ogier's strategy not to show his true speed until the stages?

Is Ogier's strategy not to show his true speed until the stages?

I should think that is highly probable. He doesn't have any choice but to start first on the road so why risk the car in a big cohones contest with JML, who does need to establish his credentials for his own mental comfort. What Seb O is effectively doing is sowing some doubt in JML's head that there was no contest so just how quick Ogier is remains to be seen. Far better for him to be 2 secs slower than JML than 0.1

If there was something to win from SD, Seb would have pushed for the best time. But now there is no point in it.
And he is not like other drivers that usually do 4 runs to get the feeling (eg Mikko)

from best of rallylive:

Fellow VW star Sébastien Ogier only made two attempts, too, but the second was marred by a small mistake which cost the life of one of his Michelin LTX Force S4 tyres. “We were too far on the inside through one corner and we hit a rock,” reported co-driver Julien Ingrassia. In addition to their modest time (2m29.0s, 10th fastest), they will above all regret having squandered one of the 28 S4 tyres they have been allocated for the week.

How does the splits in WRC+ compare to the wrc website?

So far Citroen website miles better as always:

Latvala 3" faster than Ogier

It is funny....If you follow each car in the WRC+ when the car passes the flying, time is still counting due to fact that car is still moving and after about 1 minute you get the real stage time
