Who is the driver stretchered off with his legs wrecked? (I've already forgotten which racetrack, but think it may have been a practice session.) Searching the internet, I've not been able to find anything and wondered if this particular scene was based on a specific real event. Thanks.

I think, I repeat think, that this is one of the fictionalised incidents combining elements of several true incidents. But i'm happy to be corrected.
