OK, here is an easy one: What year did NASCAR start making the teams run restrictor plates at Daytona and Talladega?

Not sure if you are being tricky, but 1988 is right for their current use, but Nascar first used them ~1970-71 when they were transitioning from big blocks to small blocks. Small blocks were exempt and all had transitioned by 1974-75.

My answer was based on the current usage. I did recall Nascar using the plates in 70 & 71, but wasn't sure if they actually were used at Daytona & Talladega.

DJ got it right, first, No I wasn't being tricky (not intentionally) I only had the current run in my mind. The use of the plates in the early 70's was to "convince" the teams to go to the small block engines and was short lived. I probably should have been more clear... It's DJ's turn :beer: :up:

Good guess, and if he would start a cup race, he could break it, but as it is he has not run in Cup since 1993, although he did run a Nationwide race in 2011. For the record, I meant in Cup. His first start was in 1963.

I was just remembering that he attempted the 2007 Daytona 500 in a car provided to him by Richard Childress-he finished near the back of his Duel race and wasn't fast enough in qually to get in on time.

That's who I believe it is, from looking it up.....but we will let Alex decide....

Hershel McGriff is it. He debuted at the 1950 Southern 500, actually came east and ran much of the 1954 Schedule winning 4 races including North Wilkesboro before returning to Oregon to work in the family business. He started running Winston West again back in the 1970's winning the Championship for them once and finishing runner-up 3 times. He always made the West Coast Cup series starts up until Sonoma in 1993, his final start 47 years after his debut. He tried to qualify for the inaugural Brickyard 400 in 1994, but was a DNQ.

Hi still makes the occasional start in the K&N west series making one start last year at age 85 in Sonoma. He "won" a race at the old Texas World Speedway in 1993 at age 65, but that was a class win. He was 4th overall behind winner Darrell Waltrip in the ARCA co-sanctioned race. He last won a race outright at Mesa Marin in 1989 at age 61.

I think that was only for one race.

The question is regarding Baker's self-owned #88 car, not the Wood Brothers 21.

I can see where/how I confused things. I was making a historical reference to the Wood Brothers as Baker's last ride prior to starting his own team.

I should've asked the question as "....first driver to replace Baker as driver in HIS team's car?"
